Species I - Cannibals.
Also known as 'Ghouls' despite not being the magically created monsters of myth, they are the descendants of humans that willingly (or unwillingly) went to Hell but whose lines did not fully cross with demonkind or was never extinguished by an angel's blade. These natives of the Pride Ring are, thus, 'technically' human. Of course, that is not technically true anymore: With their humanity largely stripped and demon energies having turned the once human visage into a grey, sharp fanged and flesh hungry monster, it is safe to say that they have very much departed from their human heritage and been made into something that just resembles their origin. In fact, most would tell you that Cannibals are inhuman in so many ways you couldn't even comprehend!
But that is the thing; 'most would TELL you' that.
Cannibals have, in fact, a very civilized society, but they are also a species suffering from a very nasty degenerating trait that does place them far too close to the Ghouls they are compared to. And this comparison sadly hits too close to home for comfort; they lose themselves in a blood frenzy if they do not consume flesh regularly, preferably of high thinking beings. It also may affect them when they allow themselves to be guided by their instincts for too long or, conversely, when their emotions get so traumatic in their effects that the high level thoughts are deemed a danger to self preservation, instead quickly reverting to an animalistic state. This, in effect, turns them into a 'Feral Cannibal', or just 'Ferals'.
A feral Cannibal is in such a state that it changes their bodies greatly and forcefully degenerates their mind and bodies. This degeneration increases their strength, agility and reflexes, as well as heightens their senses to a point that only during their lunges and attacks are they truly exposed as they commit too much to backpedal. Such 'boon' has its cost however, as this does decrease their natural hellborn resilience and kills all higher thought possibilities. As such, while extremely dangerous, a feral Cannibal has little more resistance to damage than your average human, all of it compensated with enough strength to rip apart steel plates and reaction times so high that dodging bullets is easy and most CQC specialists would be treated like nothing more than annoying flies. However, this change forces them to rely on instincts, and sometimes they only wish to consume, making them blindly attack without even trying to dodge or defend themselves if the hunger is too great.
But what about the 'regular' Cannibal? Those that aren't what rumors, hearsay and vilified propaganda tell you about? Well, let me share some things with you.
Physically speaking Cannibals are as diverse as most humans in looks thanks to their human ancestry, but within limits. For example; Cannibals primarily sport brownish hair, with darker, black colors being more prominent, but redheads and blondes still being a thing, even having a larger range of natural colors than most humans (Albeit this is very rare). That means you could find something even weirder, like green, blue, purple and so on, but those are anomalies brought by Hell itself. Skin wise? Like many Sinners with cannibalistic tendencies; light or pale blues, whites, greys and so on. Rarely will you see a Cannibal TRULY black (as in so dark they absorb light), but it can happen, although such Cannibals are more often found amongst the feral population, using their light absorbent skin to prey on the unwary.
There are many other little details, like their sharp fangs and retractable claws, though the more abnormal thing is how easily mutations (such as an abnormally large head) find their way into the genepool. This is, again, due to Hell's little touch on a body and soul, but more often than not these mutations, while slightly detrimental, tend to have positive effects in some other way.
For starters? Their eyes are fully black, with only hybrids, and even then rarely this is the case, having pupils of some kind. A natural development to trick prey into not knowing where the predator's eyes lie. This is not to say that they lack such things, only that normal, or even magical vision, seems unable to see what lies beneath the dark covering of these hellborn. And this was a mutation that stayed for good with them, much like the skin pigmentation they possess today.
Their fangs are also special, beyond being nowhere near what a human should have I mean. You see, their teeth are almost unnaturally capable of chewing anything organic and meat based, from natural armor to bones and, of course, skin and flesh, as if it was nothing. It helps a lot that their mouths and throats can distend if needed, almost like a snake, if they feel particularly gluttonous. Although the most common indicator most will see of this is their uncanny and very wide smiles, mostly because showing such things in public is considered uncout in most Cannibal societies.
And another little mutation that decided to stay? A trick if the plan on keeping prey alive: Their saliva has a way to seal wounds, a perfect method to keep Sinners regenerating and trapped for long periods, if a particular one is found to be tasty enough. It has medical applications, but good luck getting a permanent supply, or just a regular one. A salivating Cannibal is a very hungry one, or one in the throes of pleasure. Both are dangerous and you usually want to be as far away from them as possible.
Ignoring the more unique biological curiosities, Cannibals are very much like humans. General human features, minus a nose (except in very, very rare cases), two arms, two legs, the usual. There are those pesky mutations here and there that may make them look weird, but generally speaking they are a stable species. There are no real different 'races' of Cannibals as the whole species lives in Pride, and while there are many small variations here and there, more so with the rare hybrid, they are one of the less chaotic races to be born in Hell.
Their biology is also very same-ish when it comes to human comparison; roughly the same organs, nine months pregnancy duration, with the only difference being the more common appearance of hermaphrodites, as is common with hellborn species. And yes; unlike the majority of cases in humans, they are perfectly fine, generally female looking and capable of reproduction. A testament to Hell making its denizens tougher than Earth, that is for sure.
The biggest difference is a much higher pain threshold and general resilience, strength and agility. The most average Cannibal would likely be compared to a regular athlete or soldier. The most capable and stronger Cannibals? They would likely make a mockery of olympic champions and elite members of any army. Only the best of the best humans would likely compare in a 'fair' fight or competition with a Cannibal in their prime.
Now, culturally speaking? Cannibals, like any other hellborn, have no innate culture. The first Cannibal proper took millenia to ever resemble its modern iteration. Originally Cannibals were little more than very pale humans, but the black holes for eyes, sharp teeth, natural claws and modern behavioral patterns took generations to settle in and create a proper 'demon' of humanity's descendants. By then Cannibals had assimilated in Hell's society, finding a niche in Pride and almost exclusively only Pride. While you may find the odd Cannibal away from that Ring, it is likely to be an outlier and nothing else.
Cannibals are, thus, very much like Sinners in many ways; they adapt to almost any technological age, fad and so on. There are societies of Cannibals of many types, with one of the most famous being the aptly named 'Cannibal Colony'; a little, quaint town within Pentagram City lead by none other than Lady Rosie. Said little piece of bloody land is stuck in the vintage years of the long gone 1920s, give or take a decade here or there. If you want to live there? You either dress the part or are part of the dressing, and that can take many meanings. Of course, like in many other little enclaves, there are exceptions if someone is given a permit by the ruling Cannibal/s that oversee the place.
This is not atypical. If there is one thing Cannibals made 'theirs', it is the sense of belonging and an attunement to Pride. When a Cannibal society is founded, wherever it may land, it sticks to the roots it creates. They are very much independent and strong willed almost to the last of their numbers, but they are also tight knit groups whose communities share strong bonds in almost every single case. This creates the rare, and generally loyal, families seen in Pride, though few partake (or truly see, not for long anyway) such displays in these societies.
Do bear in mind: This only translates to a much lower chance of finding a complete monster or traitor within their communities. The chance itself REMAINS. Although it is no secret that Cannibal enclaves tend to do away with rulebreakers as soon as they are found unless they flee..
Although, despite these communities and their people being widely known, their fame still leads with them being carrion eaters and loose guns thanks to the most notorious Cannibals becoming little more than animals that even immortal creatures fear. This is because feral Cannibals can grow insanely powerful for how 'weak' hellborne are considered to be. It may be a remnant from when their souls were truly human, but it also may have to do with blood, sacrifice and other means of attaining power in Hell, something Cannibals excel at.
It is this infamy that grew alongside the Cannibal population that kept the species alive, not only through myth and legend, but also through more practical means: The almost animalistic ways that Cannibals act during a fight is generally always hidden in public, and Cannibals will more often than not look and act peaceful, even nicely, when compared to most Hell residents (Though that is not saying much). But piss them off or fight them? Then you may not only have one, but the whole community of that locale after your flesh. They took the mix of insults and fear from other Hell residents and made them a practical weapon by making it real when needed.
Simply put? They are like a hornet's nest, and far harder to kill.
In a way Cannibals are a perfect depiction of humanity: They are resourceful, can adapt to nearly anything and will pursue both goals and prey until they get what they want. Their desires may range from something as simple as getting a family of their own to creating a community in one of the many cities of Pride. Whatever a Cannibal may want, they rarely stop hunting from it, be it food, be it a thing or be it a dream. In fact losing their purpose and drive is the worst recipe for a feral Cannibal; those that end up this way are compared, and not favorably, mind you, to Wendigos.
However, while they are 'native' to Hell, they were not 'originated' in Hell. As such their fame as scavenger and generally unwanted leeches is far more widespread than the fear of them. This has reached the point that many Cannibal societies have all but forgotten their human origins in favor of embracing this supposedly shameful propaganda and instead turning it around. So, with many considering them pests, what do you think they do?
They live everywhere and, like scavengers do, they will be there to gnaw on your bones. Cannibals hardly care; Sinners or hellborn, no one seems able to keep them down. And if you try? There are always more of them willing to tear you limb from limb.
