In the command post of Hoover Dam stood Colonel Moore with some troops, along with Captain Brown, Lieutenant Cromwell, and the EONV. A few seconds later, General Lee Oliver entered, wearing his uniform adorned with medals, but Charles knew that was only because he was well-connected with Kimball.
Once he saw the EONV, he said, "What's the EONV doing here?"
"They're here on my orders," said Colonel Moore.
"Alright, well, once the president's here, we can start."
A few seconds later, Kimball came in with Rangers and he seemed to only be grazed a bit in his face with stitches on had never liked him because he appealed to the outside interests of the Brahmin Barons and was heavily nepotistic and corrupt, promoting Lee Oliver for his achievements in the Battle of Hoover Dam, when in reality, it was Chief Hanlon's Rangers who secured the victory after blowing up Boulder City. Hanlon wasn't a threat to Oliver's influence, however, as he was up north in the NCR to guard against the Shi due to his well-known anti-expansionist views regarding the Mojave.
"If any of you are gonna ask, yes I'm fine. The technician, whose name is Ben, I think, tried to kill me, but afterward, his head blew up, so I'm assuming a Legion guy came in here, as evidenced by what the troops have told me—blood from the supply closet. Anyway, on to your debrief, General."
"Yes, so Colonel Moore, we are warning you, if another mistake like this happens again, there will be consequences."
"Yes, sir," said the Colonel, whom Charles saw for the first time as submissive.
With the map on the table, General Oliver explained:
"Alright, so just after the attempted assassination of the President, the monorail blew up at Camp McCarran. We know that this was Captain Ronald Curtis because he was found dead from a suicide near where the monorail blew up, so we can assume he was a Legion frumentarii or associate."
"Now, this will strain our supplies if the Legion attempts to siege or attack Hoover Dam for a lengthy amount of time, so I'm suggesting we take Nellis Air Force Base up northeast of New Vegas so we can at least airdrop some supplies to hoover dam or use the planes for air support."
"What about Jacobstown, west of New Vegas, here?" said Moore.
"They don't have much of value there, and we can't sustain a conflict with mutties because that's what it will eventually lead to, so Nellis Air Force Base it is. I have a contact there that has ways to make us avoid the Boomer pilots' bombs."
"How many should we send to Nellis?" asked Colonel Moore.
"Send Captain Brown, Lieutenant Cromwell, and the EONV. We need a small force for this task." said General lee oliver
"I'm gonna get one of my boys in case we need a fresh opinion. Is that permitted, General?" said Charles
"Yes, and as General of the NCR, I would like to thank you, the EONV, and New Vegas for supporting the NCR in this trying time."
"Yes, we appreciate it. Now be on your way so we can send those Legion bastards kicking back to the Colorado." said president Kimball
"One more question, General. Your contact will be around Nellis Air Force Base?" asked Charles.
"That would be correct, sir. You'll know when you see him," replied General Lee Oliver.
"Alright, that's all," said Charles.
"And if you have any questions while on the job, tap into my frequency at 94.1 and the Colonel's at 100.7."
"Got it," said Charles.
With that, they left the command room, and the captain said, "I'll be getting the truck for us, and I assume you want us to pick up one of your agents at the Security Agency?"
"We're getting Theodore," said Charles.
"Alright then let's go." said the Lieutenant
Then they walked the hall to the garage since it was the same floor as the command room.
The garage was filled with a range of trucks and other military vehicles, with mechanics scattered around, busy with repairs. Following the captain, they climbed into one of the available trucks. None of the mechanics paid them any mind, which Charles took as a sign that the vehicle was ready for use.
As they pulled out of the garage, the engine hummed smoothly, confirming his assumption. They drove on toward Nellis Air Force Base, the dry desert air rushing past as they settled into the ride.
"So, we're stopping at the intelligence agency?" asked the Captain.
"That's the plan," Charles replied.
As they rode in the truck, Charles broke the silence. "So, what's your story, guys? How'd you end up with the NCR?"
The Lieutenant replied first. "Well, I volunteered, and the captain here volunteered. But if you're looking for the full story, we might as well wait until everyone's here," she said with a grin. "But what about your EONV boys, but not you Charles since we already know all about you ha."
Joseph chuckled. "Karl and I came from Vault 13. When House took over, the stipulation was that we were trained as EONV agents. We were orphans, the rest was history but don't get the wrong idea, though—we're not related."
Karl jumped in. "I've got a question: what's your Colonel's take on us, professionally or otherwise?"
The Lieutenant glanced over, half-serious. "We trading intel, Karl?"
"It's fine, Cromwell," the Captain replied with a grin. "Colonel Moore's hawkish, as you know. She sees you as either assets or risks to the NCR's interests in the Mojave. Right now, you're on the 'helpful' side. Keep it that way, and her opinion won't change."
The journey continued from Hoover Dam, passing through Boulder City and the 188 Trading Post before heading into Freeside. As they drove through, Charles noticed the usual stares from locals, though Freeside seemed more tense than usual. People stepped back from the truck, some casting scowls in their direction.
When they reached the Freeside Intelligence Agency, the atmosphere shifted slightly; the heart of Inner Freeside was calmer, with a familiar mix of faces and activity. Parking the truck, they made their way inside, leaving it outside as they prepared to find Theodore.
Inside, the usual receptionist, Esther, greeted them.
"Charles, you need anything?" she asked.
"Yeah, Esther, send Theodore over here." Charles replied.
Esther typed a few commands on her terminal, and within a minute or two, Theodore appeared, climbing up the stairs to the reception area.
"You called me for something, guys?" he asked.
"Yeah, we've got a mission for you. We'll brief you in the truck," Charles replied.
"Alright, well, you're the one giving out the orders, sir," Theodore said, a bit dryly.
They walked outside, climbed back into the truck, with the Captain and Lieutenant in the front and the EONV and Theodore in the back.
Once settled, Charles began briefing Theodore. "So, we're heading to Nellis Air Force Base. The mission is to secure their equipment—whether by negotiation or force. One way or another, we're getting it."
"They bomb anyone who gets near them, don't they?" Theodore asked.
"Yeah, but the General's got a contact to help us bypass that," the Lieutenant interjected.
After a moment, the Lieutenant continued, "I said I'd share my story once we were all here, so here it is. I volunteered to serve, simple as that. My parents served, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. It's duty that keeps me here."
The Captain nodded. "And me? I signed up for the money and benefits. Thought it'd be easier, yeah, but I don't regret it. Beats waiting for the draft back in Cali or working some other dry job back there."
Theodore leaned back. "Yeah, I get that. For me, duty's what keeps me going. I think every EONV member here could say the same."
The Lieutenant nodded. "Yup, we know."
With that, they continued on, the hot desert air whipping past them as the truck rolled on through the Mojave.
Exiting New Vegas through the east gate, they continued toward Nellis. Charles assumed the captain knew the route well enough, so no map was needed.
The land around them was mostly barren, dotted with a few decaying pre-war buildings and the occasional critter scurrying in the distance, though none could keep pace with the truck.
As they reached the outskirts of Nellis, there was a small shack with no one else in sight. The captain looked it over and said, "Well, let's check that shack. I assume the contact is here."
They approached the shack, knocked on the door, and a man appeared, giving them a once-over before speaking.
"Wondered when you NCR boys would show up," he said.
