"...No matter what you choose, I know you'll make the right decision."

The outside cold seeped through her and a frozen fist gripped her stomach. This was an impossible choice… or was it? Every fiber of her being screamed to save Chloe. The past week hadn't been just amazing for Chloe—it had been life-changing for Max as well. By finding Chloe she had found happiness she never knew she was missing. She had laughed, lived, and learned more about herself than she ever thought possible. And she had discovered a truth she could no longer ignore: Chloe was more than a friend to her.

Deep down she had probably known it for some time. But her fear of losing Chloe had kept her from facing it directly. It was her nightmare—and Chloe saving her from it—that revealed the truth to her. She loved Chloe. It was new, terrifying, and undeniable. The mere thought of losing Chloe made her heart stop. Here, in this terrible moment she wanted nothing more than to stay with Chloe.

[But Chloe is right.]

Yes, she was right. Letting her die might save everyone else… but the thought made Max sick. Out of all people, why Chloe? Why did the universe demand this? It felt beyond cruel—to save Chloe, to discover her love of her… only to be forced to sacrifice her. But Max saw no other way to make things right. If saving Chloe had truly unleashed the storm, there was no other way to undo it.

[To make things right… but not for me.]

The longer she gazed at her blue-haired friend, the more she realized her love for her. For years Max had wondered why she could never find someone who felt special. She had even thought she was cursed… and maybe she was—cursed for leaving behind the one girl she was meant to love. But now they were here, together again, and falling for Chloe felt as natural as breathing.

And now Chloe was asking her to make the impossible choice—to erase her from Max's life forever. Worse than that, Chloe would die alone, believing she was abandoned. Max's heart shattered at the thought, but she couldn't deny it—Chloe was ready to sacrifice everything, even herself, to save Arcadia Bay.

"Chloe… I can't make this choice…"

Her voice was a desperate plea for another option. For anything that didn't feel so impossibly wrong. Anything but this choice between bad and worse.

Max knew she was being selfish. One choice would doom everyone, while the other one would be terrible only for Chloe… and her. If only it were her own life in the balance, not Chloe's. Then, at least, she wouldn't have to deal with this endless, unbearable pain.

[The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few… or the one.]

It sounded logical… and simple. But her heart was screaming no. She knew that letting Chloe go would hurt her in a way that would never heal.

[More than it would hurt the people of Arcadia Bay?]

[Yes!]

The answer came without any doubt or hesitation. A simple, defiant yes. She couldn't abandon Chloe, no matter what price the universe demanded.

Suddenly, Chloe's hands gripped her arms, breaking through Max's thoughts. Max returned to the present and saw Chloe's face looking at her with fear and determination in her eyes.

"No, Max... You're the only one who can."

Max wanted to scream. She knew. She knew. She was only stalling for time, hoping for a miracle, for some third option. There was no way she could let Chloe die, but she couldn't accept the guilt of letting everyone else die either. Max could see in Chloe's eyes that she understood it, that she could feel her inner turmoil. She could feel the love radiating from those blue eyes and it made her choice even harder.

Max felt the warmth of Chloe's hands. Her touch felt like the last warm place in this cold and merciless universe. How could she let her go? How could she send her to death? No, not just death. The Chloe in the past would die. This Chloe—the one standing in front of her—would be erased from memory and time. Forgotten by everyone but Max.

It was unbearable. It wasn't fair.

[Max…]

"Max... it's time…"

Max knew that, too. She wanted to rage against Chloe, against the unfair universe itself. She wanted to scream "Not anymore!" and tear the photo in half. But she couldn't, because that wouldn't be right either. And if she couldn't destroy the photo, then there was only one choice.

[There is always another way. A third option. There is no such thing as a no-win scenario.]

But as Max stared into Chloe's eyes, she realized the truth. There wasn't another way. Not this time.

"Chloe... I'm so, so sorry... I... I don't want to do this."

In that moment, Max saw something in Chloe's eyes. A flicker of relief, maybe even happiness. The fear was still there, but underneath it Max could see Chloe's true self shining through—a person who was still selfless despite suffering so much.

Chloe wrapped Max in her arms and Max clung to her, wishing the moment could last forever. But then Chloe let go and Max saw tears in those blue eyes. Chloe blinked, trying to keep them back.

"I know, Max. But we have to. We have to save everybody, okay?"

[Chloe, you're part of "everybody" too. You're more than "everybody" to me. Why can't we really save everyone?]

Who was it that said, "just this once, everybody lives?" Wasn't it the Doctor?

[Oh, Max, if only you could twist time like the Doctor, so no one had to die.]

"And you'll make those fuckers pay for what they did to Rachel," Chloe continued, her voice steady despite the storm raging around them. "Being together this week... It was the best farewell gift I could have hoped for. You're my hero, Max."

"Chloe, I'm no hero…"

The words escaped her lips before Max could stop them. If she was about to lose Chloe, she needed her to know. Chloe had to understand how Max truly felt. She couldn't let her vanish into time without revealing the truth in her heart.

"A hero would figure it out," Max said with a shaky voice. "The Doctor would be a hero, saving everybody. Including you. Because you are not nobody; 'everybody' means you too. Especially for me. Because…"

Her voice faltered, because she saw the faint smile on Chloe's lips. A smile that seemed to say "I know". And that smile melted even the icy grip inside Max's chest.
"Because I love you, Chloe," she admitted with a desperate voice. "You're my flash in the darkness, the light that makes everything clear." Max drew a deep breath. "You are the most incredible person I've ever met, and I can't lose you. I don't want you to die."

Max didn't know who closed the distance first. Maybe Chloe, maybe her. It didn't matter. Their lips met and her confession found its way into the kiss, saying everything she couldn't say in words. The storm, the cold, the anguish—all of it melted away. It was just them. Max and Chloe. Together in a moment so perfect, it felt like time itself had stopped.

Bliss and sadness, joy and the fear of loss—all of that swirled inside her. But above all, she felt Chloe. She felt her as easily as she felt her own heartbeat. As if their souls had fused, two becoming one… like the aperture of a camera capturing their essence in a single perfect frame.

But time hadn't stopped.

Chloe pulled back, her eyes sparkling with emotions.

"Max. I love you too. I always will. But you're not the Doctor, okay? So please, save as many people as you can."

Chloe's words barely registered. Max felt their connection more than she heard Chloe's voice. Some tingling sensation from their kiss lingered, like a reminder of the bond they shared. Was it love? Magic? Or something out of this world, born of the storm?

Maybe it was just Chloe herself. Chloe Price was special—a rebel, a survivor, a girl out of time. And their love was? That was special too, because they were meant to be together. Max knew it was going to last, no matter what. As corny as it sounded, it was true.

Max was finally certain: her powers weren't some cosmic accident. They were meant for one thing—for one person. To save Chloe Price. Not once, not twice, but as many times as necessary. Chloe was her other half and there had to be a way to keep her alive without causing the storm. She just had to find it.

[No, not "had to" or "would". I WILL save Chloe without bringing the tornado! I will be the Doctor today, when there's no other Doctor around. I have the power to turn time around and I won't waste it by allowing people to die. Not just Super Max… Doctor Max. Doctor Maxine Caulfield.]

Determination burned inside her as fiercely as her love for Chloe. Maybe they were one and the same. All that Max knew was that she finally saw a way forward.

"Now, get out of here, please!" Chloe said with a trembling voice. "Do it before I freak. And Max Caulfield? Don't you forget about me…"

The crossroads stretched before Max—not a metaphorical one, but a literal crossroads… a crossroads in time. She could feel the path branching in front of her: save Chloe or save Arcadia Bay.

[What about neither?]

Just like at any crossroads, there was another way: to step off the path entirely and see where it leads.

Chloe stood there, fighting to hold it together. Despite her words and her brave face, Max knew Chloe was already freaking out. She was terrified, wondering how it would feel to be erased. Would it be quick? Would she even notice? Would it be like flipping a switch into eternal darkness?

But Chloe kept her fear hidden, staying strong for Max. But Max knew… and it changed nothing. She had already made her decision, she was not about to give up on her. She hadn't given up when her powers failed her with Kate. She hadn't given up when she faced Jefferson in the Dark Room. And she wasn't going to give up now! She could never give up the person standing in front of her. Never.

[Never. Do you hear me, Chloe? Not in a million years!]

The thought rang out fiercely in her head and Chloe's eyes widened with confusion, as if she had heard it too.

[What the…?]

[Never.]

The weight lifted from Max's shoulders. She had made her decision. Like pressing the shutter on her camera, finally capturing the perfect image…

"I won't forget you… and you won't forget me, because I'm going to save you," Max said with an unwavering voice. "I'm going to save everyone because I'm not giving up!"

Chloe stared at her in disbelief—not because of the words. It was because she felt Max's determination radiating from her as if it was Chloe's own.

"Max, you fucking can't," Chloe shouted. "You have to stop the storm. If you keep messing with time, you'll only make it worse."

"No, Chloe," Max shook her head definitely. "For you, I'll gladly mess with time and untangle it all over again. I'll tie the timelines into a knot if I have to. Blunt force or a doctor's cut, whatever it takes. Maybe I'll be a time bandit, maybe I'll be the Doctor. You know why?"

Chloe's intense gaze fixed on her, but she was at loss for words.

"Because you're mine, Chloe. And I'm yours. I've been alone my whole life, without even realizing it. Sorry I'm five years late, but this time I finally know what I have in you. I don't want to be alone again!"

"Max… "

The photo drew her in the moment she looked at it, as if the jaws of time swallowed her. She couldn't tell if the journey took a second or a day, but she felt Chloe's love the whole way...
