A few nights later, Mia found herself standing outside Ava's house, the sound of music and laughter spilling out into the street. Ava had invited everyone over for her birthday, and Mia, though hesitant at first, had decided it might be a good distraction. She'd had enough of prophecies, creatures, and her family's lectures. Tonight, she just wanted to feel like a regular teenager.

She stepped inside, immediately spotting Grace and Nick chatting near the doorway. Grace waved her over, a grin lighting up her face.

"Mia! You made it!" Grace said, pulling her in for a quick hug. "Ava's in the kitchen—she'll be thrilled to see you."

Mia nodded, scanning the room. It looked like half the school had shown up, the house filled with classmates, drinks, and music loud enough to make the walls vibrate. She felt a mix of excitement and nervousness; she hadn't been to a real party in a long time, and certainly not one like this.

As she made her way to the kitchen, she spotted Scarlett across the room, laughing with a group of friends. Their eyes met, and for a split second, Scarlett gave her a small, warm smile. Mia felt a strange warmth in her chest, but she quickly brushed it off, grabbing a drink from the counter and trying to focus on the festivities.

Ava spotted her and grinned, draping an arm around her shoulder. "Mia! Welcome to the chaos."

Mia laughed, taking a sip of her drink. It was sweeter than she expected, masking the burn of alcohol that followed. "Thanks for inviting me. This is… intense."

Ava laughed, clearly already a bit tipsy. "That's the spirit! Come on, we're doing shots in the living room!"

Mia hesitated but let herself be pulled along, settling into the energy of the party. The next hour was a blur of laughter, loud music, and drinks that kept mysteriously refilling. She found herself loosening up, her worries fading as she danced and laughed with her friends, feeling like, for once, she could just be a regular girl.

At one point, Mia found herself back in the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water to steady herself. She felt a little unsteady on her feet, her vision hazy from the drinks, but a smile lingered on her lips.

Then, she felt someone tap her shoulder.

She turned, finding herself face-to-face with Scarlett, who held a drink in one hand and an amused smile on her lips. "Having a good time?"

Mia shrugged, smiling back. "Yeah, actually. This is… way more fun than I expected."

Scarlett laughed, leaning against the counter next to her. "Good. You could use a little fun."

Mia rolled her eyes, though she couldn't help but smile. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing," Scarlett replied, her tone playful. "Just that you always look like you're carrying the weight of the world."

Mia let out a soft laugh, feeling a bit more vulnerable than usual. "Yeah, well… maybe I am."

They shared a quiet moment, the sounds of the party fading into the background. Mia wasn't sure if it was the alcohol or the closeness, but she felt her pulse quicken, her gaze drifting to Scarlett's lips. She could see the warmth in Scarlett's eyes, the slight flush to her cheeks, and she wondered if maybe, just maybe, Scarlett felt it too.

Neither of them moved, both frozen in the moment. Mia felt herself leaning just a little closer, her face barely inches from Scarlett's. She could feel Scarlett's breath, warm and steady, and the anticipation made her heart race.

But before anything could happen, the lights suddenly flickered, and a loud crash came from the living room. They both jumped, the spell broken, and Scarlett laughed nervously, stepping back.

"Guess the house wasn't ready for this kind of party," Scarlett joked, her voice a little shaky.

Mia laughed, though she felt a pang of disappointment. "Yeah… probably."

The moment felt fragile now, and Mia didn't know how to get it back. Instead, she grabbed another sip of water, trying to steady herself. She glanced at Scarlett, who was watching her with a curious expression.

"Hey," Scarlett said, her voice softer now. "Are you okay? I mean, really?"

Mia hesitated, the question catching her off guard. But before she could answer, Ava came stumbling in, laughing as she draped an arm around both of them.

"Scarlett! Mia! Get back in there! It's my birthday, and I demand more dancing!"

Scarlett grinned, shaking her head. "All right, all right. Lead the way."

They joined the rest of the group in the living room, where the music was blasting and people were dancing with abandon. Mia let herself get pulled into the rhythm, laughing as she danced with her friends, her mind briefly forgetting all the questions and doubts that usually weighed her down.

But even as she danced, she couldn't shake the feeling of Scarlett's gaze, warm and lingering. And though they hadn't kissed, that almost-moment stayed with her, as if it had unlocked something inside her that she hadn't even realized was there.

By the time the party began winding down, Mia felt exhausted but strangely happy, her heart still fluttering from the close encounter. She walked home in a haze, her mind replaying the night's events, especially those few, tense moments with Scarlett. She didn't know what it all meant, but for now, she was content to let the mystery unfold on its own.
