UNGCC Floor, New York City
Serizawa was in his office studying Satellite Images of Knoxville when he received the News. Of Course, he had known it would come eventually, Gojira was bound to resurface, but he hoped it would take more time to happen. If he had waited a Year, perhaps the UNGCC could have had more resources to assist against Gojira, but here they were he supposed. He immediately asked the UNGCC Officer where he emerged from, and the answer was exactly what he expected. Gojira was emerging from the Waters of the North Pacific, and was heading straight for Siberia.
That was the best case scenario for his Landfall, Siberia was very sparsely populated, with little infrastructure, although it was a Shame that the Beauty of the Wilderness might be ruined by this. Once Serizawa was informed, he immediately proceeded to a Meeting with the Head of the UNGCC, Director Morales, who had been granted the New Title recently.
As he sat down in front of the Directors Desk, he noticed that he had multiple figures of Different Kaiju on his desk.
"You see these?" Morales Started, and Serizawa nodded as Morales Continued. "These are Figures of the Kaiju, they cost me nearly 100 each, and an additional 50 for shipping from Japan."
"That's….a lot." Serizawa said.
"These are another flaw of Humanity." Morales said, "They are a Prime Example of How we can Capitalize off each others suffering, over Eighty-Six Thousand People died in the Rampage through Oklahoma and Dallas, and over Fifthteen-Thousand were wounded, and Thousands are Missing and will never be found because their Bodies were melted beyond the point of any Genetic Material-Surviving, Six-Hundred Were killed by Komodithrax, and nearly the Entire City of San Jose was destroyed by Kamoebas, that brings the Death total of This Entire Disaster of a Situation to Nearly Two Million People, that is more than the entire population of the State of Wyoming and Alaska combined Mr Serizawa."
"I know that as well." Serizawa asked, "Your point?"
"This Entire debacle started Eleven Months ago, and in that time the world has mostly forgotten, many lost loved ones, homes, children, property and had their lives ruined by these…creatures, yet these Figures were just put on sale, figures that symbolize death, destruction, and suffering." Morales said, "And these? They sold out in 3 Days, it was rated a Four-Star Figure, they profited off suffering Mr Serizawa."
"That is terrible." Serizawa said.
"Indeed, and it will keep happening until Profits don't work anymore, I am sure if they were to receive money for Kaiju Attacks they would be actively wishing for them." Morales finished, "Anyway, I heard Gojira made landfall, where was it again?"
"Siberia." Serizawa said, pulling out a Map of Siberia, "He made landfall closest to the Town of Okhotsk, on the Siberian Coast, it's a Sparsely populated area, this I think gives us more options for Military responses to him."
"I doubt it." Morales said, "There is no way in Hell that the Russians will actually let us into Siberia, with military equipment no less?"
"That is a Good Point." Serizawa said, "Either Way, The Russian Government has been informed of this entire situation, they are aware of Gojira and I am sure will be able to take measures against him."
"I doubt they can defeat Gojira if we can't." Morales Pointed out, "He has proved Immune or adapted to every possible weapon we have thrown at it so far, and the Russians have mostly worse equipment than the US Military, so If anything they will be less capable of stopping him."
"We haven't used nukes yet." Serizawa said quietly.
"Nukes?" Morales raised his brow, "Of course we haven't used Nukes, because a Nuke would be as Devastating AS a Kaiju Attack, and a Smoking Radioactive Crater isn't what we need."
"I guess." Serizawa said, Serizawa understood why they were so apprehensive towards the idea of using Nukes, but over the last few months he had come to believe that Nuclear Weapons, in the Right Circumstances, could be an effective weapon against the Kaiju. Gojira, Kamoebas and Komodithrax had all been showcased possessing similar Atomic Weapons, and while they were powerful the sheer brunt force of a Nuclear Blast should, in theory, be enough to vaporize or disintegrate most Kaiju, if not all of them. Serizawa had presented a Proposal to lure Kamoebas into the Pacific and Detonate an Underwater Nuclear Weapon, but they had already turned it down. Serizawa didn't want to detonate one anywhere close to a City of Course, but one in the Middle of the Ocean shouldn't hurt them as bad as a Kaiju would.
"Anyway, beyond that, I've been securing more RnD funding, and I've approved some projects that could help defeat these guys." Director Morales said, and Serizawa listened. "Since the Kaiju seem resistant to basically all known Conventional attacks, we've had to make some more unique 'Conventional' weapons. Our first weapon we approved was a Cryogenic Weapon known as a maser Cannon that shoots some type of Cryogenic Material in a Beam that can freeze basically anything, we are making both a Flying and Ground version of the Maser Weapon."
"That's Interesting." Serizawa said, "But how soon could these weapons be ready?"
"It will take years, unfortunately." Morales said, "We already know the military made good progress with MG-001 and the Oxygen Destroyer, but other than that we don't have much to fight the Kaiju with. We might be able to scale the Maser cannon to a higher power, we suggested that MG-001 be mounted to have a more powerful Maser Cannon, one that can freeze a Kaiju to near Absolute-Zero, and although the talks went well they said no, mostly because our Maser Weapon is too early in development, but because it might be too hard to change MG-001s Design." Morales finished.
"Surely there is some weapon that can be effective right now?" Serizawa asked, but Morales shook his head.
"The Navy is bringing back Battleships that are in museums for service, basically everything possible that might be able to hit one hard enough to knock it down, and I doubt any of it will work, especially with what's going on in Knoxville." Morales said, he paused for a moment before continuing "We are sending a Team as we speak, a Spec-Ops to diagnose the situation in the city, they will radio back their findings before a US Air-Force of B-52s and B-1s arrive to firebomb the city."
Serizawa was surprised, he had been the one to first suggest taking care of the situation by bombing the city, but he wasn't expecting them to actually do that. Morales, still looking at him, spoke again. "I personally suggested engaging them on the ground, this is a Populated City we are talking about, the survivors would lose their homes in the Firestorm that would follow, people don't seem to understand that."
Serizawa nodded, he felt bad for all those affected by this, he was sure most people did, but he was sure there was someone who didn't, there always was.
"But yes, the Team is En Route already." Morales said, "We already discussed the mission objective, their aim is also to recover samples of the creatures, and this will let us learn some weaknesses in case any survive the fire bombing."
Above Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Plane flew several kilometers into the air, there was some smoke rising from the city, but gunfire had already ceased. The Few Forces already there had been destroyed by the Kumonga, and now they were going in not to destroy them, but rather to get the lay of the land. They knew there was some pre-existing equipment in the city that could be proved helpful, and supplies would be airdropped with them. Of course, they wouldn't long to work, they had about 2 and a Half Hours before the Air Force got there and began the bombing Campaign, and they would have to work fast
The Paratroopers gathered near the Rear Cargo Door, they all had their parachutes on their backs fastened firmly in Place. The Commander of the Group of Soldiers looked back at them, and motioned with his hand for them to Jump as the Cargo door was opened. After a Moment they all ran out the back of the Plane, skydiving towards the Ground, they all popped Red Flares, which trailed in the Sky behind them as they plummeted. After a Moment, the Leader, Commander Jamez, opened his parachute, followed quickly by the others. As they emerged through the Cloud Layer they could see the City. Some Plumes of Smoke were emerging from fires near the Northwest, but other than that it was mostly intact. They couldn't see any Civilian Vehicles Moving, and he figured anyone was either Dead or Evacuated.
As they landed they quickly took stock of their Positions, they all had Radios capable of communicating with each other, and Jamez quickly radioed to his Soldiers for them to Meet up along Route 640, near the Center of the City.
He quickly made his way to the City, he could hear the Chittering of the Kumonga nearby, he was quiet as he walked, and his presence for now remained unknown. The Commander made his way along a road that sat next to the highway, and after a moment he reached the meet up point. He got out some night vision equipment and put it on, despite some weak moonlight it was very close to pitch black, and with these binoculars he could see much better. As he looked out across the landscape in the twilight he could see the bright spots of Fire, but he could also see that the city seemed to be infested with the monsters, he could see dozens of them far in the distance through the goggles.
"Team leader, I am approaching the Meet-up point, I got in contact with the rest of the team, we will be there ETA 2 Minutes." The Other soldier said through the Radio.
"Copy, make sure you hurry, the Kumonga are active." He said, he looked around him, he could see the silhouette of the skyscrapers against the sky, fires were slowly spreading, but as it was starting to fill with smoke it was getting harder to see and breathe.
Eventually, he did meet up with the other soldiers, and they confirmed the story. The Kumonga were reproducing at a Rapid Rate, they had personally seen 30 by now, and they had only covered part of the city, based on estimates he guessed there could be as many as 60 or even more within the confines of the city. The Creatures would devastate the entire continent of North and South America if allowed to spread, Human Civilization could very well end up collapsing along with the rest of the Food Chain.
"These things must have a nest and are reproducing." He said ,he gestured to a Map of the city which he brought back out and placed on a park Bench, they all looked at it as he traced to the center of the city.
"These Things are likely congregating here, that is where they seemed to be at least mostly, if they are nesting here then they have good cover, lets try and get a Sample at least before we get the hell outta here." He said, the soldiers all nodded in agreement and they set off towards the edge of town, they wouldn't dare venture to the areas that had even more of those things, what they needed was a lone one, not an entire army, if they could bring down a lone one then they could get enough samples and they'd be already ready to flee.
As they approached the edge of town he checked his watch, they were walking at a fair pace, but they had only an hour and a half to get out of here before the Air Force arrived and turned this place into Dantes Inferno.
Soon they reached the edge of the town, and he spotted something unexpected. A Corpse of one of the Kumonga, he found that odd since he knew nowhere near enough forces had previously been in the city, that was until he remembered there was Jira, another small Kaiju, within the city. It looks like a lot of flesh had been torn off this thing, a fair portion of its body, and the rest was quite literally cooked. They cut off a substantial piece and placed it in an isolated Jar.
"Control, we have a Sample, do you copy?" He said into his long-range radio.
"Control here, yeah, send us your coordinates and we can call in a Chopper to pick y'all up." The Radio Buzzed.
He looked around, finding some street signs and he told them the location, they said a chopper was on its way, and it took a solid Fifthteen minutes for it to arrive.
When it did, they were rushed into the chopper, all 5 members of the team on safely, as it lifted into the air they could see the city, some smoke still rose from it, but it was still mostly intact. As the chopper flew away he could vaguely hear the roar of Bomber jets high in the Sky, B-52s, a Couple of B-1s and fighter jets augmented with bombs were approaching the city, he hadn't even noticed the 2 hours had passed already, and as he held onto the canister containing a Sample of the creatures he could hear over the radio that the bombers were beginning their bombing run.
Jira dropped the piece of meat in front of her hatchlings, she had decided not to drag the entire carcass all the way to her nest, even though her jaws were strong she could not carry the whole body uphill, she did tear off a good chunk of it though and carry it to her nest, but the rest she left on a road near the the edge of the town. She watched the babies tear into the flesh, that was until she heard a strange noise.
She looked up to see a Helicopter taking off and soaring above her, she had seen some before, quite a few in fact, but she hadn't expected to see some right now, she had seen no humans or any of their mechanizations since the fighting in the city stopped. Now that she listened, the entire air around her seemed Eerily quiet, if she listened hard enough Jira could hear the distant Chittering of the Kumonga, but besides that the only thing she could hear was the wind, no birds, no animals, just wind and swaying branches. Jira didn't like this, there had always been birds at least before, but it was as if the presence of the Kumonga was so bad that even the animals who lived in safety had fled, and that terrified her.
Jira quickly began to hurry her babies along, urging the hatchlings away. They went uphill, the exact opposite direction of the city, and as she turned back she noticed a strange noise. It was the distant roar of jet engines, she looked up, her eyes going wide as she saw it.
Planes, Dozens of them, US Bombers equipped with enough high explosives to light up the entire city area, enough to pulverize every Kumonga in the city, even Jira, with little knowledge of the Military or their weapons, could see what was coming next. She grabbed all her babies in her jaws and carried them away, sprinting over the hill and into the Appalachian mountains. Jira paused as she crested a Small, Wooded Hill, and looked back on the city of Knoxville. As she watched the first ordinance began to detonate around the city, neatly cut lines of falling explosives triggering Massive explosions which cut across the landscape, she just watched, awestruck, as the explosions moved towards the city center, she heard the Screams of the Kumonga as they began to panic, they tried to run, but were caught up in the onslaught, more lines of ordinance struck the city, followed by explosions from distant missile launches.
Then the real horror began, Napalm Bombs were unleashed onto the city, she saw the Fiery Explosions of them lighting up strategic areas, followed by a Large Bomb detonating at the city center in between the office buildings, it wasn't nuclear, but it was massive enough to make the ground shake and for the near instant decimation of said office buildings to occur. She continued to watch, frozen, as soon as it began, as the bombings came to an end, she gazed at what remained.
It was a Firestorm, a Wall of flames which sprang up through the remains of the city, the sky was filled by the Orange Glow, the rising smoke blocked out the bright moonlight, and the landscape was bathed in Orange and Red as the firestorm spread. Jira could hear no Kumonga now, just the distant booms and echoes of flames crackling through the air. She turned back, putting her babies down, and ushering them further east. Jira would have to find a new home, and this time hopefully not have it turned into a raging firestorm by its own creators.
Somewhere in Eastern Siberia.
Gojira hadn't been on land for at least several Months, he liked swimming, the depths of the ocean could quite easily match the beauty of land, and there was virtually infinite room for his despite his size, but every once in a while had got a strong urge to return towards land, he knew not why, but something always drew him here, and he ended up making landfall here.
Gojira, being a Nuclear Organism, was not nearly as susceptible to temperature changes as other contemporary Creatures, but even still he could tell it was vastly colder here, even though it was now Early July he could still taste bitter freeze on his tongue, and as he emerged he could finally see the appearance of the land he had come across.
It was beautiful to describe it, he could see minimal human settlements, and rather than giant concrete blocks the landscape was dominated by pine trees, which stretched far into the distance, Gojira could see rolling hills, green ones, and the sky was nearly cloudless. It was very scenic, and as Gojira stepped onto the land he could see wildlife scatter around him. This land had seen minimal intervention from Man, and as a result it was a place Gojira liked, he looked down the coast, he could see a mostly empty road that winded down it, and Gojira walked to it, his footfalls leaving wide impressions in the dirt and as he reached the road he saw a Car that was driving towards him come to an abrupt stop, then turn around and drive away, Gojira walked after it.
Given the size of his strides, a slightly brisk pace was enough to catch up to the old, boxy vehicle, he leaned down and picked up the car, inspecting it. Gojira saw the Driver raise his fist and yell at him, and Gojira decided to put the car down, he watched as the Car drove away as fast as it could, and as it receded into the distance Gojira suddenly sense something approaching, another Monster, one he had already encountered before
The Pentagon
General Alvarez sat down, joined by the other high ranking officials of the US military. He and quite a few others had a lot to discuss given the events of the last months, Gojira resurfacing in Siberia was bad enough, Kamoebas levelling a Third of Costa Rica was bad enough, and now with what has transpired in Knoxville the world needed answers, answers he could not provide.
Luckily, the US could just pay its own industrial complex to provide answers for them.
So that was how Project Absolute Zero began, an attempt to Fight Gojira on his own terms. Enough Sample Analysis of Fragments of Gojiras Cells revealed enough of his Genetic Makeup, and physical Build to begin constructing a Large Fighting Machine strong enough to theoretically take on the Monster, they had called it Mechagojira, but this specific one had been named 'Kiryu'.
"So, when will Kiryu be ready?" He asked his fellow military representative.
"It can be deployed right now."
