Sup Guys~~It's been a while hasn't it? Again, I left you guys without an update on the story, so it's all on me and I apologize again for being MIA for even longer this time. As for my reasoning (excuse), I found a new job since the last update, working at a classic 9-6 job, publishing written articles, and spending my rest time on gacha games and watching League (Yes, I'm a League Fan, mostly a Faker fan). Thus, I put the fanfic in the corner of my head and left it to rot until now, when I rewatched the anime and found my passion again.

While I'm not sure when the next update is again, I'm currently only starting the next chapter and I will only say you can expect some heartwarming, fun scenes~~ Also, I again apologize to the people leaving reviews and PMs as it is not my intention to leave you guys unread. Following Up Where We Left Off

"It's been a while, Tsukasa Eishi. I hope you have gotten better than before."

"You're Asahi?!"

"Heh, it seems like you have spotted a ghost. Am I really that terrifying?" The young man with messy black hair and pale skin asked.

"So he's the man that you defeated, Master Asahi. Sure does not look like much." A woman said while wearing a military costume reminiscent of the girls from Chained Soldier.

"Tee Hee, if that's the best the Overworld can bring, I can now see why you require our help." Another woman boisterously said.

"What did you say?! You freak rabbit cosplayer?!" (Eizan)

"Hehe, The dogs with the loudest bark are the most afraid. Do you not agree?" A man dressed as a clown said to the one with dark purple hair beside him.

'Nods'

"Hoho, it seems my colleagues have greatly angered you. Please try not to get offended, as they merely could not hide their intrusive thoughts like us." A middle-aged man with glasses and a mustache said.

"Not cute at all...These people are unpleasant Sou-Myan." Momo said as she grasped at Sōmei's coat.

"I agree Akanegakubo. They are the people furthest from the teachings of Bushido." Sōmei replied as he eyed the person in a mask.

"Neh Kurokuni, Is it all right for me to shut them up here?" Kuga said more like a statement than a question.

"For once, I would comply with your request. But, it seems your tussle may need to wait."

Just as Nene finished her words, the mastermind behind the meeting clapped his hands and halted the two groups.

"Hmm, I would appreciate it if both sides would settle their differences until we deal with our common enemy. Now, do take your seats, my beloved soldiers."

On cue, the seven Elite 10 members sat to the left of the figure while the other eight figures sat to his right. If you are wondering how the Elite 10 members can see through the cloth, let's just say the anime logic of covering yourself in black does not apply here when they are legit in your sight of view.

"Now then, let's discuss what transpired during the after-party of the Autumn Election, the appearance of the Bookmaster, and how we proceed in the upcoming Moon Festival."

On the Other Side

"It appears you all still have some reservations about your own potential. For that, it is partially due to our fault. I apologize." Senzaemon said.

Before they could inquire about what Senzaemon was apologizing, Anne interrupted them and said: "I think it's high time to tell you about your own worth and how we are the ones taking advantage of you."

With everyone's attention locked, Senzaemon said: "Do you know of 'The Jewels Generation Plan'?"

"The Jewels Generation Plan...Jewels Generation...Hoseki...Do you mean us?" Hisako deduced.

"Exactly, Miss Hisako. This plan involves not only you lot gathered here but the entirety of Totsuki Academy." (Anne)

"Yes, and that plan revolves around me or should I more precisely say, the possessors of the God tongue." (Erina)

"Around Erinacchi?" (Yuki)

"Yes. As you may already know, the God's Tongue is a unique skill that grants the wielder a superhuman level of taste beyond that of even the most seasoned food and ingredient experts. This skill is granted upon birth and is exclusive to the Nakiri clan." (Senzaemon)

"I see. No wonder the Nakiri clan can retain their prestige for so long. However, we already know it is not all sunshine and rainbows, as we heard from Nakiri-san's experience. And from the fact Nakiri-san mentioned possessors of the God's tongue, the problem stemmed from further back." Takumi concluded.

"Wow~~you managed to nail the crux of it from that. Guess your brain has more than being the brute constantly fixated on Soma~~" Alice teased, earning a side eye from Takumi.

"Hehe~~Takumi-kun does tend to let his heart move first, then his brain whenever it is about Soma-kun," Megumi added, which earned nodding approvals from the group.

"If I may add something, headmaster. As far as I know from the records, Nakiri-san is the only known possessor of the God's tongue. If that's the case and the God's tongue is exclusive to the clan, I presume it is taboo to mention the term. Until now." Marui stated.

"Very keen analysis, Zenji Marui. Now, if you all would not mind hearing this old man ramble, let's bring you through the history of the God's tongue first." (Senzaemon)

Flashback

Nakiri Senzaemon, now 8 years old, was running around the vast greenery inside their mansion. Back then, the Nakiri clan was known as untouchable in the culinary world as they had a monopoly over the cuisine and food distribution in Japan. There was no Totsuki Academy and WGO establishment, only segregation between the Nakiri clan and the others.

Why? The Nakiri clan boasted a person or entity in others' eyes since the Edo period (1603-1868) that pioneered the progression of Japanese cuisine and opened it to the outside world. Boasting the most prized chefs at their beckoning, with many more seeking recognition, it was no wonder many considered the Nakiri clan the most feared party in Japan, as even in war, food is the most decisive factor.

Expectedly, many curious people were interested in the entity, but Senzaemon, more fortunate than many, did not require extensive checks and signed waivers before visiting said person. As the young boy opened the gates to a secluded garden, he noticed several high-profile people gathered around the then God's tongue possessor, his grandmother, Nakiri Ine.

"Nakiri Ine, I heard of that name before. She was the one who developed

and revolutionized Japanese bread when there was a scarcity of rice and grains. However, there was no mention of her possessing the God's tongue, and she subsequently disappeared not long after, with rumors stating she was sick and bedridden." Ryoko stated.

"Yeah, according to what I read from the family records, our great-grandmother felt ill and delegated all duties to his husband, Nakiri Shozo," Alice said as everyone turned their attention toward Senzaemon again.

"Yeah, Erina and Alice's great-grandmother was never sick. She even created our Japanese Milk Bread and modified European breads like croissants and Danish pastries to suit Japanese palates. However, this was when I first heard of the God's tongue," Senzaemon revealed to the shock of the Hoseki members.

"Lady Ine, I heard praises of your latest accomplishments, the Shokupan/Japanese Milk Bread. People in the West even claimed it was a miracle of engineering as the bread is moist but not gummy, rich but light, balanced between sweet and salty."

"Yes, I can see people enjoying the bread daily in Japan as breakfast toast and sandwiches. Many describe it as the best version of soft white bread with its milky-sweet taste and pillowy softness."

"I expected nothing less from Lady Ine. With the blessing of your God's tongue, Japan's cuisine will take another giant step forward. If only the ability is inherited from generation to generation, then the world is our oyster."

'The God's tongue? What's that?' Senzaemon wondered before seeing his grandmother cast a death glare at the gentleman and ask the guards to send him out.

"You have a lot of nerve muttering that term within our vicinity. I hope you know of the consequences. Butlers, please excuse this gentleman and his entourage from this meeting. Remember to remove their name from the list while you're at it. I would like to have some time for myself." Ine said as the butlers dragged the apologizing group out of the mansion.

With them out of sight, Ine massaged her tired temples and leaned forward to grasp her teacup. Unexpectedly, she saw someone beat her to the punch and presented it to her.

"It seems your etiquette still needs improvement, Senzaemon. While I do praise you for getting a lady her drink, sneaking into a lady's private quarters without permission is not. I expect you to engrave this into your soul," Ine said as she patted for her grandson to sit beside her.

"Of course, grandmother. But, you know me, I'm the brat who hates rules and regulations. It's fine if it ends up working out somehow. See, you invited me to see beside you despite scolding me." Senzaemon smiled, which earned a wry shake of the head from Ine.

"Haih, there is always one rascal in the family that acts oddly, and I'm glad it is you, my dear grandson. With your non-by-the-rules attitude, I'm sure you will lead the Nakiri clan to a more civilized and heartwarming clan." Ine said as she softly ruffled Senzaemon's hair.

"Grandmother, I unintentionally overheard your conversation a minute ago, and I can't help but wonder, What is the God's tongue?" Senzaemon curiously asked with sparkling eyes.

As a lady of the Nakiri family, Ine did her best not to spit out her drink as she lightly coughed, and Senzaemon quickly handed her a napkin.

'It seems it's no use hiding this fact from him. Children are the most innocent when learning something new, and with his adventurous attitude, he might find a solution to our long-standing problem. Forgive me, dear ancestors.' Ine thought as she looked towards the eager Senzaemon.

"Very well. However, promise me, no matter how brilliant I or others describe it, remember that too great a talent will turn against itself one day." Ine said as she looked directly at Senzaemon's pupil, ordering him to agree.

"Yes, I will take it to heart, grandmother. Pinky promise." Senzaemon said as he held up his pinky towards Ine and sealed the oath.

As Senzaemon took a moment to sip his tea, everyone's gaze turned towards Soma.

"Yukihira, are you sure you're not part of some long-lost Nakiri blood? You and the headmaster sound like you two are cut from the same cloth." Shun voiced out everyone's thoughts.

"Well, I don't know whether I have Nakiri's blood in me now, but I definitely will have my blood in two Nakiri's in the future," Soma said, which earned his two smacks to the head.

"Well~~Even if Otouto does not have any relations to Nakiri before, it sounds destined for him to meet the Nakiri family eventually~~. Maybe in another verse, Otouto meets them and gets rejected by them first before eventually warming up to him~~" Rindo said as she locked her hands around Soma's neck.

"Heh, if I am a chef in any other universe, I know I will meet Erina, Alice, the Polar Star Dormitory members, our club members, Rindo-nee, the Totsuki Elite 10 members, the Alumni, Anne, the WGO judges, and other chefs in my journey to hone my skills and find my reason for cooking like now," Soma said as looked at the people gathered gratefully.

"Hmph, I would have loved to meet the one that was not this overpowered protagonist with plot armor to the max and cliche inviting one, though," Shinomiya said, earning a soft chuckle from everyone present.

After the lighthearted moment, Senzaemon resumed his story and explained that the first bearer of the God's tongue dates back to the early Edo period (1603-1868) when Japanese cuisine really took form.

"The first bearer of the God's tongue, our ancient ancestor, began her journey to win over the hearts (and stomachs) of people across Japan. Back then, the Emperor of Japan announced a "ban on eating meat" as it collided with religious teachings, and the people only partake in fish, vegetables, and beans. However, she did not let this stop her pursuit of incorporating meat flavor into dishes, which she eventually succeeded by creating 'dashi', the Japanese soup stock that grants us the 'umami'/flavor we know today." Ine explained to the fascinated Senzaemon.

"Wow! Was she able to do that because of her God's tongue?!" (Senzaemon)

"Although totally not relying on it, the God's tongue granted our ancestor an ultra-acute sense of taste, allowing her supernatural prowess in detecting even the tiniest imperfections in any dish. Thus, it was when our clan's name came to be. Nakiri, adapted from the most popular knife in the Japanese kitchen, means to cut open a new path for Japanese cuisine." (Ine)

"Amazing! So you have the ability? What else has she achieved?!" (Senzaemon)

"Before her passing, she introduced yatai (eating while standing at a stall), emphasizing that people should socialize with one another regardless at home or a restaurant." (Ine)

"However, when she passed away, our Nakiri clan stagnated as her heirs did not inherit the same supernatural ability she did. Thus, to ensure the bloodline remains, the heirs were subjected to bedroom arts training more than culinary training." Ine said as her expression darkened.

"Unfortunately or fortunately, the next inheritor came a century later, and she once again led the next frontier of our clan. As for her deeds, she began intertwining food with elements of artistic refinement in the style of its preparation, similar to the high-quality products the artisan class of the time had produced. She emphasized the beauty of food's appearance by incorporating a sense of the seasons, creating the term "your eyes eat before your mouth" (Ine)

Before Senzaemon could express his amazement, Ine stated: "However, she was a fragile maiden. Her life, or what's left of it from birth, was never her own decision to make. While she did enjoy cooking, her smile always left something to desire. After she served her purpose, even her innocence was forced away in favor of the clan. As she said in her final words: I only hope you can earn freedom and live the life you want it to be. Those were the words of my grandmother."

"Sniff sniff, the headmaster's great-grandmother's life is just too cruel...She never wanted it. It's just too sad to live one's life as a tool." Megumi cried as she leaned against Kurokiba.

"Fate is as much cruel as it is benevolent. We alone can only deal with so much with our two hands." Kurokiba said as he tended to his sobbing girlfriend.

Senzaemon Nakiri looked at Megumi nostalgically as he shared the same reaction before.

"Grandmother Ike...Sniff...Sniff...I'm sorry for my excitement just now. I don't want you to be the God's tongue anymore," The younger Senzaemon sobbed as Ike smiled warmly at him and brushed off his tears with her hands.

"How silly of you. There's nothing for you to apologize about." (Ike)

"But...but you are also walking down the same path as great-grandmother..." (Senzaemon)

"No...I'm more fortunate than my grandmother, as I have you, your parents, and my idiot of a husband. Now, won't you stop hiding behind the bushes, dear?" Ike said as Nakiri Shozo walked out embarrassedly and stood behind the two.

"I would appreciate it if you would not expose me in front of the children, honey. It's a man's worst nightmare to look uncool in front of their juniors," Shozo said as he gave Ike a peck before squatting to face Senzaemon eye-to-eye.

"Grandfather, can you save grandmother? I don't want her to continue as the God's tongue anymore." Senzaemon asked hopefully, as any kid of that age would.

"Of course I'm helping your grandmother, darling. Look how happy she is when she is with me. You constantly visiting her is also helping as she does feel quite lonely by herself." Shozo said as he scooped Senzaemon up in his arms.

"That's because you decided to delegate most of my tasks to yourself, our daughter, and son-in-law, so I have more time. Also, I would appreciate it if my time was not on meeting those fools like just now, I would have much appreciate to be in the kitchen, " Ike unpleasingly stated.

"You're not young anymore, you old hag. Well, I can say the same for myself. But, congratulations on your new creation honey, although I would like to claim some credit for it since I was technically the one who created it." Shozo said with a smug face.

"Really? Grandfather was the one who invented Shokupan/Japanese Milk Cake?!" (Senzaemon)

"If you count someone mistakenly dropping plain bread in a milk cup and eating it afterward counts as inventing it, then I would be happy to relinquish the honors to you," Ine said as she rolled her eyes.

"Well, I'm not shy to take credit as my slip-up led to another new dish. You were adamant about not trying it when I fed it to you," Shozo replied cheekily."

"Dear, not everything you touch turns into gold. I can't even remember the amount of times I almost fainted when you fed me something you accidentally created." Ine replied as she lightly swatted at Shozo.

Looking at his grandmother's and grandfather's happy faces, Senzaemon realized that it was not the creation of a new dish that gave them happiness, it was the process of discovering the unknown and sharing ideas that brought a smile to their faces.

After deciding what he must do, Senzaemon exclaimed: "Grandmother, grandfather, I also want to be like you two, I want to learn of the happiness you both shared and share it with you, mother, father, the clan, and everyone else in the world."

Glancing knowingly at one another, Shozo and Ine smiled warmly at Senzaemon and said: "If that's what you set out for yourself, no rules can deny your freedom. While you may face self-doubts and questions from others, always remember that someone looks forward to tasting your dish. Cook with that thought in mind, and your journey will never be alone."

Thus, the Food's Demon King journey began as Senzaemon ventured across Japan, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and every continent to immerse himself in culinary knowledge. Throughout his journey, he could still hear feats from his grandparents. However, it did not overshadow his accomplishments as he earned the respect of many and became one of the most highly regarded figures in the culinary world. As he returned to the clan after his final outing, he and his companion joined the clan and greeted Ine's and Shozo's final moments.

"Cough...It's great to see you return safely again, Senzaemon. I see you have kept our words to heart. Unfortunately, this old lady could not even see the person her grandson dedicated his cooking to. I do apologize for that, young miss, "Ine said as she felt tears dripping down her held hands.

"Senzaemon, I'm pleased you found the happiness you seek, and I hope you can spread that joy you brought us to many others like you always wanted to. While we old fossils cannot see the future you'll build, we are sure it is a place filled with the happiest and freest chefs." Shozo said as he gave his final words.

"Cough...that old bastard always wants to get ahead of me, even at the end. Senzaemon, if you ever meet the next possessor, reach out to her as you did with me. Remember that..." (Ine)

"Too great a talent will turn against itself one day." Senzaemon recited as he could see his grandmother's final smile as she also set off on her journey to the afterlife.

After giving his grandparents a proper burial, Senzaemon told his parents: "Mother, Father, I decided I want to build an academy for inspiring chefs. I have witnessed countless people throughout my journey who have aided in my growth but lack the foundation we Nakiri have. I want a place where everyone has the freedom and opportunity to learn and grow from conversing, debating, and competing against one another."

"If that is your wish, our son. There's no reason for us to stop you. May the Nakiri name always be your pillar, our future leader."

"Wow, so that was how Totsuki Academy came to be. I never would have thought that beneath lies such a heartwarming story. I guess it is true that cooking with, against, and for others will improve your culinary skills." Hojo said as she looked towards her now rivals and friends.

"So us enrolling in Totsuki is already part of the plan. It's because we can help polish the finest gem known as Nakiri Erina." Takumi concluded.

"Yes. All your enrollments into Totsuki were part of a grandfather's selfish desire to save the possessors of the God's tongue. For this, I apo ..."

"What are you saying, gramps? Nobody's here because they felt forced to. Even if you never explain this, I'm sure that as chefs of Totsuki, we will eventually gather around her as someone we like to talk to, learn from, and a target to overcome. Your plan happens to coincide with our pride and journey as chefs." Soma said as he interrupted Senzamon.

"Yeah~~yeah~~Soma's right, No matter how strong and unbelievable of a chef Erina is~~She's always the stupid tsundere cousin and sister-in-arm of mine~~" (Alice)

"Headmaster-dono, thank you for your explanation. I'm grateful that I enrolled in Totsuki as it gave me the platform to chase after the figure I always felt contempt looking at from behind. Here, I can finally experience what standing beside her, my friend, felt like." (Hisako)

"Yes, Ojii-sama, the chefs gathered around here are not so weak that they feel incomparable in front of me. In fact, I was the one who felt pressure as if I did not receive the help of the God's tongue and the wake-up call from them. Could I still achieve what I am capable of now? No. However, this positive pressure removes the shackles that once bound my predecessors. Therefore, do not look down on them." Erina said with conviction.

"Hahahaha, I see. It seems age is catching up to this old man. Very well, I will take back the apology I wanted to say and change it. Heed my words, Totsuki chefs of the 92nd generation carved your journey with successes and failures. The world will try to fit you in a mold, and people will call you an anomaly. But, do not go to the path they lead. Go instead to a new path and leave behind a trail." Senzaemon stated.

"Osu/Yes/Naturally~~/Noted/Understand, we are grateful for your words," The Hoseki members replied in unison.

In Our Main Characters' Room

As the drowsiness finally caught up, even the energetic Soma, Erina, and Alice were lying on the king-sized bed, with no energy left for some 'late night activities'. (I meant pillow fighting, of course)

"While we have already heard the story before, the way Gramps conveys it still holds a sense of lasting regret," Soma stated.

"Yeah~~I think Ojii-sama still feels guilty of almost costing the life of one God's tongue to save another, despite it not being true," Alice said as she held Erina's hand.

"We were there when it happened...It was the only time we saw Ojii-sama broke down and cried uncontrollably."

"If I recall, you were also crying back then, which led to Alice crying, me crying, and Anne and the others crying." (Soma)

"Well, it can't be helped after all~~ Our mirror neurons imitate another person's neuron reaction to a stimulus or stimuli, which leads to us imitating Erina's response."

"I didn't know that Molecular Gastronomy included the study of brains and neurons, Alice. Regardless, it was an experience I never would have thought of back then, an experience that led us to this next journey, the meeting with my mother, Nakiri Mana, the previous God's tongue possessor." (Erina)

Flashback (Chapter 21)

After seeing off the young trio, the trio of Joichiro, Gin, and Riko headed backstage and met up with the mastermind who earned the tickets for the trio to join the World Food Championship.

"Yo, Old Man, did we make you wait long?"

"Really Joichiro...Can't you at least greet Senzaemon-dono politely? We're in a formal setting, after all." Gin exclaimed exasperatedly.

"Greetings, Headmaster Senzaemon. Little Erina and Co are already inside the arena. We also brought along our cooking tools as you asked," Riko stated as she showed her knife bag.

"Yeah, good to see that all of you arrived safely. I apologize for asking you three to do this old man this favor."

"There's no need for the formalities Senzaemon-dono. You earn someone's favor by inviting Soma, Erina, and Alice to the WFC, and it is rightful for us to return the favor," Gin stated.

"Yeah, don't get sentimental on us. The person who receives the most favors is the one who knows how to return them. It is a small matter compared to allowing Soma and the girls to participate," Joichiro followed up.

"Joichiro-senpai is right. Also, a chef always remains prepared to serve their customer."

Smiling proudly at his prized students, Senzaemon led the trio deeper into a secluded area to meet up with the person who granted him this favor, the World Food Championship founder, Mike McCloud.

Inside the humbly decorated ballroom, the four could see McCloud standing by the door, delighted upon seeing their arrival.

"Welcome Senzaemon, my old friend. Greetings to you three as well, my name is Mike McCloud. I'm extremely honored yet terribly sorry that you three must follow through with this. I told him that I do not require any return for the simple favor of three invitees but he insisted that I should receive compensation. I never would have thought it was enjoying a cooked meal from his most prized students. Ah, sorry for delaying you at the door, please follow me to the table." McCloud said as he hurriedly led the way.

'Well, at least it's not some arrogant fat bastard. I would have served him some of my 'prized' delicacies as an entree.' Joichiro thought as he smiled devilishly which caused Riko and Gin to nudge him.

Before he could complain about how they knew, Riko and Gin pointed out: "Your face speaks louder than words" before they followed McCloud and Senzaemon and left Joichiro behind.

After the shenanigans, McCloud led the four to a table where he respectfully pulled out the chair for Senzaemon to sit on and invited the other three to sit before taking a chair himself.

"Haha, I see you remain as honorable as ever McCloud. Therefore, I expect no unnecessary servings presented later." Senzaemon said as he glanced at Joichiro.

"Of course, who would do such a thing?" Joichiro shamelessly said as he, Gin, and Riko stood up from their seats and said.

"Please wait a moment dear customers, your meal will be ready soon."

As McCloud and Senzaemon saw off the three heading to the kitchen, the former stated: "My old friend, I forgot to inform you that another guest is arriving soon, I hope you don't mind."

"There's no problem here. Since the person is your guest, I am in no position to decline. There are also three chefs, so it balances out the judges for the upcoming dishes." (Senzaemon)

"Judges?"

"Yeah," On cue, a loud voice resonated from the kitchen: "OK! Let's do a Shokugeki right now Joichiro!"

"See? While you don't have to worry about the quality of their food, I would advise you to give your honest opinion on which dish is the best." Senzaemon said as McCloud nervously chuckled.

As the two pleasantly reminisced about old times when Senzaemon traveled to Europe, the kitchen was reaching a boiling point with ingredients mashing and stoves burning. Soon, the hunger-enticing aroma crept out of the kitchen, tempting the two gents to pause and take in the smell.

Bzzz...bzzz. Unfortunately, their descent to food heaven was interrupted as McCloud's phone vibrated, alerting him that his next guest was arriving soon. Reluctantly, he excused himself from the table and headed towards the door.

"Oh? Was my ingredient choice too striking for the Western palate that he lost appetite and left?" Riko asked as she presented her dish first out of the three.

"He left to receive a guest that will be joining us. However, I won't hold it against him if he hesitates to try Fugu/Pufferfish sashimi for the first time. I'm not surprised that you served it with your mastery and license, but I am surprised you decided to go with this among many of your Japanese specialties. Wait...Don't tell me the theme of the Shokugeki is..." Senzaemon asked with sweat pouring.

"Yeah, Japanese cuisine that Westerners tend to avoid. Admittedly, we also hate black pudding/blood sausage, but if a chef of the highest caliber prepared it, I wouldn't mind trying it," Riko said with a smile.

"Haah...I'm sorry my friend, but at least the food will taste good...probably..." Senzaemon sighed resignedly as he could only imagine what Joichiro could make with such a theme.

After Riko placed her dish and left, McCloud returned with his guests in tow and wanted to introduce her to Senzaemon. However... her first words were something he would never expect.

"...Father?"

Immediately recognizing the voice, Senzaemon stood up abruptly with

his chair falling, and spoke the name of someone precious to him tentatively.

"...Mana."

As the three chefs simultaneously raced out of the kitchen after hearing something amiss, they were greeted with a stand-off between Senzaemon and a girl who resembled an older Erina. While no words were exchanged, the intense emotion in their eyes spoke volumes about the encounter.

Deducting that it was a private family matter, McCloud gave Senzaemon a glance and nod of understanding, which the latter acknowledged, thanking him as the former left the ballroom and gently closed the doors behind him.

"It's been a while, Father, it's good to see you are doing well. Though, it is embarrassing that you're present to witness my unfortunate state." Mana said first.

"Mana...Your condition..." (Senzaemon)

"Despite how well I tried hiding it, a daughter's action can't escape a doting father's eyes," Mana said as she slightly wobbled, which Senzaemon immediately rushed over to lend her a shoulder.

"Mana!" (Senzaemon)

"There's no need to worry father, I'm merely famished. I'll instruct the gentleman outside to get me some packet nutrients." Mana weakly said while trying her best to muster a smile.

However, it seemed to have the opposite effect as Senzaemon's tears were building on his pupils, and his grip on Mana strengthened.

"Lady Nakiri, if you don't mind, you can have some of our prepared dishes. I'm sure our dishes will taste better than what you requested," Gin said as he gestured towards the table.

'Totsuki students, I see. Father is here on some official business. Maybe one of his pupils is participating in the competition.' Mana thought as she gestured to Senzaemon, as they headed to the table.

Analyzing the three dishes displayed in front of her, Mana thought: 'Fugu Sashimi (Riko), Ume Shiso Pasta/Spaghetti with Perilla Herb and Pickled Plum (Gin), and Natto & Parsley Kakiage Tempura (Joichiro). It appears the three are having a contest to bring out Japan's home flavor with ingredients Westerners sorely dislike. The three dishes could not be more different with a pure Japanese take, a western-japan fusion, and an entirely new combination.'

Looking at the three judges, Mana could feel their extreme confidence in their prepared dishes and the competitive spirit shared between the three. 'How nice.'

"Apologies. The dishes you prepared are exquisite, and I already know what they would taste like. However, could you three prepare a bucket just in case." Mana said.

Although surprised at the request, the trio felt that the supposed daughter of their headmaster meant no harm and did as she asked.

As Mana took a bite of Riko's dish, she could feel the refreshing and sweet taste of the prepared Fugu. Fortunately, there was no tingling and numbness of the tongue and mouth, meaning there was no poison residue in the dish. Unfortunately, Mana lamented that no hot sake accompanied her second slice and dipped it into the ready Ponzu (Soy sauce) for a salty and savory combination.

Without letting her emotions show, Mana moved on to Gin's Ume Shiso Pasta. While this pasta is frequent in Japan, with packaged ume shiso flavorings for pasta available in supermarkets, the homemade version is always the best.

With her first bite, she could feel the fresh, citrusy flavor of the Shiso, acting as a perfect substitute for basil, while the Ume complimented it with its enticing tart and salty taste. Most importantly, Mana noted that Gin kept the ingredients to a minimum, with only chicken and mushrooms, to avoid overpowering the main point of the dish.

Lastly, Mana turned to Joichiro's dish and stated: "Fundamentally, this would cause a backlash among the Japanese and Western as our country prized Natto is the most hated dish among the West while we in Asia hate Parsely due to how they perceive it can substitute for ingredients in our dishes."

"Haha, is that so? I only considered this recipe as Natto brings out the savory, tangy, and salty the people here describe Blue Cheese. As for parsley, its bright and slightly bitter taste helps mask the Natto smell and emphasize the flavor as the foreigners do with Lemon Zest."

"I see. Kakiage mixes batches of different ingredients and deep-fry unseasoned ingredients coated in a batter (Tempure) made from wheat flour. With mixed fried, you remove the slimy, gooey texture people hate about Natto before trying it."

"Yeah, I'm sort of a genius if I say so myself," Joichiro said, which earned a roll of the eyes from his two rivals.

As Mana took a bite of the Kakiage, she could feel the crispy and delicate texture and the burst of Natto and Parsley in her mouth. However, as she took a second crunch, she saw the image of Joichiro sitting lonely in a hall, staring up at a closed ceiling. In the scene, Mana could see Joichiro's hollow expression with his cooking knives scattered across the floor.

"Too great a talent will turn against itself one day. It seems even you were not able to avoid this fate." Mana said as Senzaemon jolted and stared guiltily at her.

"In reward for pleasing my appetite, I will answer your questions in father's stead by firstly introducing myself. My name is Nakiri Mana, the holder of the God's tongue." Mana said as the three looked on in shock at the term.

Flashback to When Mana Discovered Her Abilities

It was a joyous occasion in the Nakiri household as their darling princess was turning six, the age when kids in Japan began elementary school. To celebrate her first step into cultivating her skills, her father and leader of the clan, Nakiri Senzaemon, hosted a private party for this momentous moment.

Since her father took over the Nakiri family, her family is still the culinary leader of Japan. However, the mantle of unapproachable slowly faded as he founded an academy for chefs worldwide to hone their skills together. No matter the background, gender, or race, her father welcomed the promising chefs to his institute. It was a place she loved to join.

Due to daydreaming, she did not feel someone approaching her and scooping her onto his shoulders.

"What got you thinking absent-mindedly for, dear?"

"Hehe, I'm just thinking I will be the best chef at your academy~~I heard older brother is already beating his seniors in these Shokugekis," Mana said as she snuggled into her father's neck.

"Haha, I'm sure you will shine with your love for cooking like the name your mother gave you and had for you. Mana (Genuine Affection)." Senzaemon said solemnly.

"Mm, I'm sure Mother will cheer on us two," Mana hugged Senzaemon tighter.

"Aren't you forgetting someone, dear sister?" A voice interrupted as the two looked down and saw the then Sōe Nakiri.

"Of course not. We will never forget our future head. Isn't that right, Father?" Mana cheekily responded.

"Naturally, you and Sōe will be the pillar of your generation. However, remember you can always rely on me." Senzaemon said as he let Mana down and embraced the two.

"Now then, the party is about to begin. So, why don't you prepare your surprise, Sōe?" Senzaemon said as Sōe nodded and headed into the kitchen.

"Surprise?" Mana asked while tilting her head.

On cue, the lights turned dim as Mana turned and saw Sōe walking out while pushing a cake trolley with a glistering golden cake and presenting it to her.

"Happy birthday, dear sister. I hope you'll achieve your dreams of a fulfilling school life. However, this is the first taste of challenge you can expect there." Sōe with a challenging smirk.

Smirking in reply, Mana stated: "Very well, let's see what the best of Totsuki Academy has to offer me."

Warmly smiling at the interaction of his son and daughter, Senzaemon closed his in satisfaction, but his eyes immediately burst open when he heard Mana's first words.

"It's disgusting. Firstly, the cake is too dry. You put too much flour and not enough butter. Although you try saving it by brushing it with simple syrup, you do not wait long enough for the cake to cool, causing it to dry up when served. Also, the crust is too sugary, meaning you have not adequately creamed the sugar and fats. Lastly, the cake feels dense, meaning you failed to cream butter properly as butter holds air, and the creaming process is when butter traps that air, expands, and produces a fluffy cake." Mana utters out the faults unconsciously after tasting it once.

After finishing her rant, Mana felt shocked as she saw the same expression on her brother and father. Immediately wanting to apologize, Senzaemon interrupted and asked Mana to taste the other dishes the chefs had prepared.

One by one, Mana pointed out simple faults inside their dishes as Sōe looked on in amazement while Senzaemon wore a stern expression.

"Father, brother! I suddenly could taste what was wrong with the dishes. Also, I felt like I could create those recipes without making faults. It's incredible!" Mana excitedly said.

"Yeah! If you could really do that, no one in Totsuki or even the world can compete against you!" Sōe praised.

Unexpectedly, their father did not share the same excited emotion as he stated: "Mana, it seems our ancestors have blessed you with a gift. However... never mind. After the party, please meet me with Sōe in my office. Apologies for not sticking around, but please forgive your old man, and happy birthday, my dear."

Seeing the worried expression on his face, Mana and Sōe felt bewildered but nodded as they remained and enjoyed the party with their close attendees.

Once the party ended and they changed into more casual wear, the two nodded to one another and wordlessly arrived in front of their father's office. Knocking on the door, they heard their father's permission to enter before setting foot inside and saw him clasping his hands, eyebrows furrowed, and looking at a large book on his desk.

"Father, we have arrived." (Sōe)

"Welcome. Do have a seat, my dears'. I apologize again for requesting your presence at this late hour."

"Our sleep schedule is not the most worried right now, Father. It is about my ability, right?" Mana asked.

"Yes. Before I explain, you both have to promise me not to mutter a single word you hear here to anyone." Senzaemon requested as the two nodded.

Thus, Senzaemon began retracing the stories his grandmother Ike told him as he explained that Mana had awakened the dormant God's tongue exclusive to their clan, the history, the struggles and hardships, and what having the ability means.

As the story ended, Mana stayed silent for a while before stating: "I see. This God's tongue of mine brings good and harm. I can now understand why Father looked so worried earlier. However, I still want to try and conquer this ability like our great-grandmother did."

"I agree with her choice, father. If our great-grandmother could live a happy life while having the God's tongue with our great-grandfather, I can become someone supporting her, a pillar to push ourselves further."

"Even if it means leaving Totsuki and joining Mana in studying abroad?" (Senzaemon)

"Father?!" (Mana/Sōe)

"Our clan has a long-held tradition for children to be brought up abroad for the sake of devoting themselves to their unique education as statesmen who stand above everyone else with grace and nobility. However, I decided to take an exception for Sōe and you because I believe from my experience that competing against one another is much-needed to improve. Unfortunately, with your case, my dear daughter, it is now an off-deal, and I cannot send you to Totsuki as your presence as the God's tongue must remain hidden. I apologize, but this is a rule I cannot break," Senzaemon answered as he left no room for arguments.

Without hesitancy, Sōe turned to her sister and smiled: "I understand, father. I will leave Totsuki and accompany Mana on her study abroad. Competing against the best chefs will help me improve, and I know that the best future chef will be her."

Immediately, he felt a soft pair of hands embrace him and heard the words "Thank you" repeatedly.

Looking at his daughter and son, Senzaemon proudly smiled as he confirmed their choices: "Very well, Sōe, Mana, I'll arrange the documents required for your transfer. In addition, I will also take some time away from the academy."

"Does that mean?!" (Mana/Sōe)

"Heh. While I will not always be there, I hope you two will not slack off without my supervision." (Senzaemon)

"We will live up to your expectations and exceed them, Father!" (Mana/Sōe)

Back to the Present Mana

"Unfortunately, while it's safe to say I exceeded Father's expectations, I still failed in some aspects. Yes, there's a saying: I won the battle, but not the war." Mana said as she referenced her condition.

"Lady Mana, I apologize for this request, but could you..." Gin wanted to say something, but Joichiro beat him to the punch.

"How did this happen, and is there a way we can prevent or cure it?" Joichiro asked with a worried tone that you rarely see from him.

Despite not knowing the reason, seeing the seriousness in his eyes, Mana replied: "Very well. Considering your dish and how you face struggles similar to mine, I will elaborate. However, to not shatter your hopes before lifting it, I will be upfront and say there is no hope for treatment."

Flashback (Mana Adolescent Years)

"I see. It seems my older brother finally met a woman that would give him attention like his little sister." A teasing voice surfaced as the scene changed into a lovely lady, a handsome young man, and a wise, mature figure sitting in their dining room.

"Urgh...At least it's better than someone who has not made contact with the opposite sex since you always shut them down when they engaged in conversation with you by saying: I would only date a man who can impress my tongue and belly. Do you know how weird that sounds?" The young man jabbed back.

"Oh? Do you want every man to hit on your darling little sister?"

"Of course I don't!"

"Then, there you have it~"

"You!"

"Heh"

"Haha, I'm pleased that the dining table here feels much more lively compared to home. I'm also delighted to see how much you've matured Mana and Sōe."

"Father" (Mana and Sōe)

"Also, regarding your request Sōe; You are at the age where you can decide where you head next. Life is a process of discoveries and new perceptions. Thus, I approve your trip to Denmark and anywhere else. However, I hope you return with only two people instead of three before you are ready."

"I understand, Father. Thank you for your approval!" Sōe stood and bowed as Senzaemon approved his trip to Denmark and his relationship.

"Good for you. So, when are you leaving?" (Mana)

"In two days, I've pre-drafted arrangements for the visit, and there are many places I want to explore to learn more about preservation techniques." (Sōe)

"Oh? So that's why you chose culinary arts research as your career. In addition, going to countries like Denmark helps because Traditional Scandinavian cuisine includes various preservation techniques such as smoking, curing, pickling, and fermenting. These methods preserve food and also impart unique flavors to dishes." Mana concluded.

"Precisely, dear sister. If I learn and invent techniques even you don't know about, I can finally end my lost streak." (Sōe)

"Hmph, I see you try, older brother. Have a safe trip, and come back soon." (Mana)

"Oh, will my little sister feel lonely if I leave?" Sōe intended to tease but felt guilty after hearing Mana's reply: "Of course I will."

As Sōe went to comfort Mana, Senzaemon spoke: "Mana, you are also allowed to chase where you want to head next. I learned you are keen on tasting and judging dishes, so why not start by exploring the restaurants and diners here? Who knows, maybe someday you will replace me as the head judge at Totsuki."

"I will hold you to that Father. And thank you for your support," Mana said as the dinner continued with friendly banter between the Nakiri family.

Back to the Present Mana

"After Brother Sōe left, I began my venture across the country's restaurants like on a food hunt as my God's tongue deemed each place unsatisfactory until I met him at an uninspiring place hidden in the corners. Looking back, it was a place best describing him."

"Ironically, he was also a former Totsuki student. However, his first dish impression was far less appealing than you three. I remembered that I even barged inside the back kitchen to give him a piece of his mind for serving me a bland and disgusting dish. If I recall correctly, the exact description I said was: The taste is like a mountain gorilla drumming to forget its heavy sadness."

"As expected, he reacted angrily to my comments, but it seemed to spark the passion missing from him before as he pledged to make a dish I deemed satisfactory. Not one to shy away, I accepted his challenge, and eventually, after numerous failed attempts, he finally made a dish that pleased me. The story then continued like a typical romance shoujo as we journey together toward the center of the dark and furious storm." Mana said as Joichiro and co noticed what she was alluding to.

"Unfortunately, this is where the God's tongue curse first appeared, as he failed to keep up with my pace, and I myself struggled to move forward as I gradually lost my way and found myself trapped within the sandstorm. I started sending back dishes, unable to stand the smell of dashi (the essential part of Japanese stocks and miso soup), and even hesitated to walk into a kitchen."

"However, the moment of despair I felt towards cooking was when my beloved daughter inherited the insufferable curse I held," Mana said as pain emitted from her tone.

"It was the first time the God's tongue appeared in consecutive generations, and she was even more potent than mine. The legacy of God's tongue-holders despairing over cooking and living in agony rang across my thoughts as I fell deeper down the rabbit hole, as I could not bear to see her walk the same path I experienced."

"While the conflicting thoughts echoed within me, she quickly grew up and displayed passion and talent beyond me when it was my age as she sought out food combinations and flavors like it was second nature to her. Regardless of talent, she was still a child like any other, as she wanted to share her happiness with us parents. But, it was this unavoidable action that I truly felt broken." Mana said as tears built up in her pupils.

"She started serving us her dishes and wanted our opinions on it. As every parent would do, they would praise their child and improve on the mistakes together, but I couldn't. I could only hide behind a lying smile and said it was good as I turned down every request to join her in the kitchen."

"I felt disgusted about myself, about food, about cooking in general, and I decided the best way to avoid harming myself and her further was to leave the Nakiri family."

"However, as you can see from my state, I still have not found a cure, and I doubt I will, as even your dishes, his dishes could not alleviate my condition."

"Then, how about I give it another try, Mother." A young female voice resounded as everyone turned toward the door and saw several childlike silhouettes behind the resolute figure.

And cut~~ Yes, another cliffhanger for who knows how long when this stupid author will update again~~While again no promises, I hope to publish a new chapter at the end of January 2025 (Yes, January 2025 and not 2026~~) As always, here a sneak peek of what you can expect in the next chapter~~ See you again~~

"E...Eri...Erina..." Mana gasped as she snapped back at his father, but he was equally shocked at her appearance.

Before Alice could introduce the trio, Mana interrupted and called out to them: "Anne, Courage, Decora"

"Mana Sensei," The trio replied as everyone widened their eyes, including Alice and Soma.
