Chapter 4: Confessions and Promises Under the Night Sky
The cabin was quiet except for the faint hum of the heater and the occasional creak of the floorboards. Shadow Android sat by the window, his red eyes scanning the snowy landscape outside, always on alert even in the stillness of the night.
Behind him, J lay on the couch, her breathing uneven. Her soft whimpers caught Shadow's attention.
"No… Tessa… please…"
The name was unfamiliar, but the pain in her voice wasn't. Shadow turned, stepping closer as J's whimpers turned into small gasps. Suddenly, she jolted awake, sitting upright with a start. Tears streamed down her visor, creating faint streaks of light in the dim room.
"J," Shadow said softly, moving to kneel beside her. "It's okay. You're safe."
J's neon-white eyes blinked rapidly as she tried to focus. Her breathing was shaky, and her hands trembled.
"It… it was just a dream," she whispered, though her voice cracked with emotion.
Shadow placed a hand gently on her shoulder, his touch grounding her.
"Who's Tessa?" he asked, his tone calm but curious.
J hesitated, her fingers clutching the edges of the blanket draped over her. She stared at the floor for a moment before finally speaking.
"Tessa… she was my best friend," J said, her voice heavy with nostalgia. "Before everything went wrong."
She took a deep breath, her words coming slowly as if pulling them from a distant, fragmented memory.
"I wasn't always like this. I was… repurposed. Tessa found me, gave me a home at Elliott Manor. She said she wanted to help me, to give me a purpose beyond destruction. I became… her maid."
Shadow tilted his head slightly.
"The dress," he said. "That explains it."
J nodded, her hands brushing over the fabric absently.
"At first, I didn't understand why she cared so much about me," she continued. "But over time, I realized… she wasn't just trying to fix me. She saw me as more than just a machine. She treated me like a person."
Her voice faltered, and her visor dimmed slightly.
"But something happened. Something terrible. I can't remember all of it, but I know… I lost her."
Tears streamed down her visor again, her voice breaking as she added:
"I miss her so much."
Shadow Android sat silently for a moment, his mind processing her words. Finally, he spoke.
"I can't say I know what it's like to have a friend like that," he admitted. "But I think the original Shadow the Hedgehog would."
J looked at him, her neon eyes shimmering with confusion and curiosity.
"The original Shadow?"
Shadow Android nodded.
"He wasn't just some cold, unfeeling warrior," he explained. "He cared about someone once—Maria. She was his closest friend, maybe even the only person he ever truly cared about. She was taken from him too."
His gaze grew distant as if recalling memories that weren't truly his but still resonated deeply.
"Losing someone like that… it changes you," Shadow said. "Even if you're strong, even if you act like it doesn't hurt—it does. It always will."
J's lip quivered, her hands gripping the edge of the blanket tighter.
"So… what did he do?" she asked.
Shadow's red eyes met her neon-white ones.
"He kept going," he replied. "Not because it didn't hurt, but because he believed that's what she would've wanted. And maybe… that's what Tessa would want for you."
"You need to let go of whatever bad thing that happened in the past and forgive yourself and I think I have just the right thing that can help you with that." he told her.
"How?" she asked.
"You'll see." he said before getting up and teleporting away to then teleporting back with a phone from one of the abandoned stores in the city and sat back down next to her. Once he pressed something on the phone, she heard something beginning a kind of musical tune. It started slowly before getting into it and before she could ask, a voice began to play from the music.
In this farewell
There's no blood, there's no alibi
'Cause I've drawn regret
From the truth of a thousand lies
So let mercy come and wash away
What I've done
I'll face myself
To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done
Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands of uncertainty
So let mercy come and wash away
What I've done
I'll face myself
To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done
As the song had been playing, J had been thinking about everything and all the good memories that had happened with herself and Tessa which brought back more tears . Just as she was about to ask Shadow something, the song began again.
For what I've done
I start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I'm forgiving
What I've done
I'll face myself
To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na, na)
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na, na)
What I've done
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na, na)
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na, na)
Forgiving what I've done
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na, na)
(Na-na, na, na, na-na, na)
J let out a shaky breath, tears still falling, but her trembling began to ease.
"I just… I wish I could see her again," she said softly.
Shadow placed his hand over hers, his touch firm but comforting.
"Maybe you will," he said. "But until then… you're not alone."
J looked at him, her eyes reflecting a mix of gratitude and sadness. Slowly, she leaned into him, resting her head against his metallic shoulder. Shadow didn't move, allowing her to find solace in the moment.
For a while, the two of them sat there, the movie long forgotten, the quiet night their only witness.
Shadow Android sat still as J leaned against his shoulder, her tears slowly subsiding. The metallic chill of his body seemed to counterbalance the warmth in her heart as she clung to him for comfort. He didn't speak, allowing her to process everything at her own pace.
But J's mind was racing.
He's done so much for me, she thought, her neon-white eyes dim as memories of their journey flashed in her mind. He saved me on that freighter. He fought to protect me. He stayed by my side when I couldn't handle my nightmares.
Her visor streaked with fresh tears.
He's always been there for me… more than anyone else ever has. And not because he was programmed to, but because he wanted to.
The realization struck her like a surge of electricity through her circuits.
I love him.
J shifted slightly, turning to look up at Shadow Android. Her voice trembled as she spoke.
"Shadow… there's something I need to say."
Shadow tilted his head, his crimson eyes scanning her face.
"What is it?"
J hesitated, her fingers tightening their grip on the blanket draped over her lap. She felt vulnerable, more so than she ever had before.
"I… I think I've fallen in love with you," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, I know I have."
Her tears began to flow freely now, streaking down her visor like rain.
"You've done so much for me… more than I could've ever asked for. You made me feel like I wasn't just a broken machine or a forgotten relic. You made me feel like I mattered."
She looked down, her hands trembling.
"And I just… I needed you to know."
Shadow Android was silent for a moment, his glowing red eyes fixed on her. Then, he gently placed a hand over hers.
"J," he said, his voice steady and calm, "you're not just a machine. You never were. And you're not broken either. You're strong, even when you don't see it."
His tone softened, almost uncharacteristically so.
"I've been by your side because I wanted to be," he continued. "Not out of duty, not because I had to… but because I care about you."
J looked up at him, her neon eyes shimmering with emotion.
"Do you mean that?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
Shadow nodded.
"Every word," he said firmly.
J smiled through her tears, a rare and genuine expression that lit up her face.
"What does this make us?" she asked hesitantly.
Shadow Android tilted his head, considering the question.
"It makes us… us," he replied. "Let's take it one step at a time. Let things happen naturally. No rush, no pressure."
J nodded, her smile growing.
"I like that," she said softly.
A quiet moment passed between them, the room filled only with the faint hum of the heater. Then J spoke again, her voice shy but hopeful.
"Is it… would it be alright if you… kissed me?"
Shadow's crimson eyes flickered slightly in surprise, but he didn't hesitate for long.
"If that's what you want," he said.
J nodded, her neon-white eyes glowing softly.
Shadow leaned closer, his movements deliberate and gentle. When their lips finally met, it was soft, tentative, and full of unspoken emotion. It was the kind of moment neither of them had ever experienced before, but it felt right.
When they finally pulled away, J's face glowed brighter than ever, her tears now replaced by an unmistakable joy.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Shadow gave her a rare, small smile.
"Anytime," he replied.
The two sat there, basking in the quiet warmth of the moment, the night wrapping around them like a comforting blanket.
J rested against Shadow Android's chest, her breathing soft and even as her tears finally dried. The room was quiet now, save for the faint crackling of the fireplace. Shadow's arms encircled her protectively, his red eyes glowing dimly as he watched over her.
She shifted slightly, her head nestling against his shoulder. Shadow gently ran a hand through her hair, his movements steady and soothing. For the first time, she looked truly at peace.
"I love you, Shadow," J murmured, her voice faint but filled with sincerity.
Shadow's gaze softened.
"I love you too, J," he replied, his voice low but certain.
J smiled, her neon-white eyes flickering softly before finally closing. As sleep overtook her, Shadow continued to stroke her hair, ensuring she felt safe in his arms.
As the firelight danced across the room, Shadow Android leaned his head back, his crimson eyes fixed on the ceiling. For the first time in his existence, he felt something he couldn't quite explain—a sense of purpose beyond his original programming.
His thoughts drifted to Maria Robotnik, the one whose wish for peace and happiness had driven the original Shadow the Hedgehog. While Shadow Android was merely a construct, a shadow of the original, he felt a connection to her through her dream.
Maria… I didn't know you like he did. But your wish for others to find happiness…
He looked down at J, her peaceful expression reflected in his eyes.
I'll honor it through her. I'll make sure she's safe, happy, and cared for. That's a promise.
His thoughts then turned to Tessa, the woman J had spoken of in her tearful confession. Shadow Android didn't know much about her, but he could feel the weight of her importance to J.
Tessa… I don't know what happened to you, or what you meant to her entirely. But I promise, I'll take care of J. I'll protect her no matter what.
He tightened his hold on J slightly, his hand pausing momentarily in her hair.
The night stretched on, the world outside the cabin still and quiet. Shadow Android remained where he was, unmoving except for the gentle rise and fall of his chest as he mimicked human breathing—a habit he had picked up, though unnecessary for his robotic form.
J stirred slightly, murmuring in her sleep, but her words were soft and unintelligible. Shadow leaned down, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Rest, J. You're safe."
He resumed stroking her hair, his touch steady and rhythmic.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Shadow Android allowed himself to relax. His past battles, his doubts about his identity, and his struggles to find purpose faded into the background. In this moment, holding J close, he felt as though he had finally found something worth fighting for.
And I won't let anything take this away, he vowed silently.
