Chapter 13

Elphaba was worried about the latest development in Sarah's case but her thoughts were broken up by Brrr. He'd knocked on the door of Glinda's office and she bade him to enter. She knew why he was there. After the meeting with Fiyero's parents, the King and Queen had a meeting with Bfee. Fiyero was waiting for Fevzi's parents to arrive.

"How are you faring Miss Elphaba?" He asked as he took a seat in front of Glinda's desk. The green woman was seated behind the large Quoxwood desk.

"Well, we think someone purposefully hurt Sarah and I scanned these spell books, with some help, but the only one that had anything was, of course, the Grimmerie," she heaved a sigh, not realizing her slip up.

"Sounds like a hefty thing then," Brrr said.

"It is. You didn't hear of its existence, ok?" Elphaba gave him a look.

"Oh, that kind of a book," his eyes went wide.

"Only I can read it. I cannot publicly announce its existence as I have no idea where Morrible found it. She told me a story but you know how she liked to lie," she said.

"Good to know. More importantly, no one should be asking about it anyway," Brrr figured.

"Correct. Now as to what we've been searching for - the Clock of the Time Dragon," she said before grabbing a piece of paper and a pencil.

"The Clock can supposedly predict its own demise. It is said that the hands of the clock would strike midnight, rather than remain perpetually at one minute to midnight," she said as she drew the picture that the Grimmerie had shown her on the piece of paper. The Clock was basically a tower-like container where Mr. Boss would give shows. This container had a painted clock, the hands were as described above and sitting on top the clock, a tik-tok dragon. This dragon was supposed to be so lifelike that it could strike awe or fear into those who saw it.

"So, it should have seen Mombey and Ugabu coming?" Brrr wondered.

"I guess so but could do nothing to protect itself. Since Mr. Boss is dead and the Clock is shut up in a cave with no caretaker, I can think of no other description than demise. Eventually the parts will fail and the clock will cease to function. The Grimmerie does not say what happens if the Clock dies," Elphaba told him.

"Does that mean we should be concerned or…" Brrr trailed off.

"I honestly don't know. I figured I would get more out of the books but not much else was offered up. The book did mention that there is a secret plaque behind the stage which the Clock uses to convey important information to its caretaker. It could have warned Mr. Boss of his own death," she said.

"Begs the question as to why Mr. Boss wouldn't have left the Clock. If he knew that Mombey was coming, the Clock would not have conveyed any message if he had left it," Brrr figured.

"I'm not sure if that's how it works. The clock is incredibly heavy and is usually pulled by seven boys. Your lookouts didn't mention them at all did they?" Elphaba wondered.

"No. Perhaps Mr. Boss sent them away to protect them. With them gone the clock wouldn't have been able to move, making Mr. Boss a sitting duck of sorts," Brrr shook his head.

"Yes, not a pretty prospect at all. If we knew who these boys were, maybe we could find out more information, but I'm afraid that is all I have for now," she told him.

"I think Fiyero is probably right then. Leave it be. Since we few know where it is and until we know why the Munchkins were looking for it, there is no reason to open a possible can of worms," the Lion said.

"Sounds like a plan to me," Elphaba agreed.
