Chapter 21

"We will do our best to find this Nanny," Mopsi promised after she explained her plan. They had met in Glinda's office the next morning, so as to have some privacy.

"I do not want to send you on your own, but soldiers will bring attention. I certainly don't want the new government thinking that we're invading or anything," Elphaba said.

"I have an idea," Popsi said.

"What idea is that?" The green woman looked to him.

"Why not borrow a corporal in civilian clothing? We can claim that he's the one looking for Nanny and as good Munchkins, we thought we should help him," he said.

"You think a lack of a uniform would be enough?" Elphaba raised an eyebrow.

"Well, no one would think twice of a man on a horse with a rifle. We're travelling on the Yellow Brick Road after all," Popsi figured.

"A protection spell and a corporal. Which one were you thinking?" She asked.

"I was thinking Corporal Norris. He's a good guy and I think he's due a bit of a vacation," Popsi said.

"Some vacation," Elphaba chuckled.

"We have to start him off slow. He's never had a vacation," Mopsi chuckled.

"If he's willing, I'll clear it with Fiyero," she smirked. The two Munchkins nodded and quickly scooted out of the office, almost running into the aforementioned Prince.

"They look excited," he chuckled.

"They thrive with assignments. Too many years stuck in Southstairs, so doing nothing has them antsy," she smiled at him before explaining their plan.

"I do like this idea a little better. I'll speak to Sergeant Zeki about adjusting the guard schedule," he told her before leaning in and kissing her.

"As much as I love these interoffice interludes, you were on your way here for a reason," she said.

"A letter from my folks. Seems the presence of the King and Queen caused a hullaballoo in the village," Fiyero let her know.

"Oh, I bet," Elphaba smirked.

"It also caused a lead to pop up. Dilek's men are running it down now. Hopefully, we'll have our perpetrator soon," he said.

"We should let Sarah and Fevzi know," she told him. He nodded and guided her to the office door. They made their way down to the infirmary to find that Sarah was being helped to move around. Fevzi was walking behind her as Sarah used a cane to move around. Hamza was helping to give her instruction and watching her form.

"Looking very good. You'll be running in the Vinkun races in no time," Fiyero smiled.

"Prince Fiyero! Miss Elphaba!" Sarah was all smiles.

"What did I say about the Miss?" The green woman gave her a look that said she was not upset as it gave way to a smile.

"To not," Sarah chuckled.

"She's doing well. I'm so proud of her," Fevzi smiled.

"As you should be. Up and about so quickly after a procedure," Hamza interjected.

"That's youth. I know I can hurt myself getting out of bed in the morning," Fiyero teased.

"My future husband, the old man," Elphaba rolled her eyes. This made everyone chuckle.

"Where is Doctor Talib?" The green woman asked, noticing he wasn't around.

"I knew my ears were ringing for a reason," the older doctor said as he exited his office.

"Hiding in your office huh?" Fiyero wondered what was keeping the doctor from his patient.

"Hamza has things under control. Besides today is the day for appointments," Talib said.

"I think I'm your first one," Elphaba spoke up.

"Indeed," he nodded.

"Everything is all right, right?" Fevzi asked.

"Just the old checkup, you know. Nothing to worry about," the green woman reassured him.

"I'll be hunting down Boq later I suppose," Talib heaved a sigh.

"I'm about to do that, don't you worry," Fiyero promised. He looked at Elphaba, knowing that she fully intended to ask the doctor about her chances of getting pregnant.
