(12)-More Talk About Home.
Kyle and Cobey had now finished their Dairy Queen order, it's items now empty, with their sodas being the only things left. They had eaten the fries and chicken-strips, split the burger and shared the sundae. They hadn't drinken their sodas yet, as the straws were not in them. The drinks were being saved for later after they finished their meal, and the spoons were in the empty sundae cup. Two of the ketchup packets were still full and hadn't been opened, but Kyle was planning on keeping them for whenever he bought more fries.
"Aaaaah. Now THAT...was some good DQ." Kyle said, sitting back in his chair, relaxed.
"Same here." Cobey agreed, also sitting back in his chair.
"I never thought i'd say it, but Arvada Dairy Queen's cooking is better than Prairie Grove DQ's." Kyle said.
"You have a Dairy Queen in your home-town." Cobey asked.
"Yeah, but not as big as the one here in Arvada. In fact, the only thing my DQ has in common with the one here is that the staff wear the same thing." Kyle said.
"So what else does your town have up-to-date?" Cobey asked.
"Well, let's see. We have McDonald's...Golden Corral...Sonic...and a Best Western motel." Kyle said.
"That's it?" Cobey asked.
"Pretty much, yeah." Kyle said.
"What about school? What's that like?" Cobey asked.
"Well, the elementary school is held in a barn in a valley...the middle school and high school are in two regular buildings in town, like every other school." Kyle explained.
"Wow. Aside from the updated restaurants and the modern day motel, it sounds like your town is behind on a lot of today's stuff." Cobey said.
"You don't know the half of it." Kyle said. He knew how right Cobey was about Prairie Grove's lack of today's material things. After all, wasn't that one of the reasons he had left on this journey in the first place? To see the world outside his home-town he never got to see growing up? He knew that the whole point of this trip was to find his brother and patch things up with him, he hadn't forgotten that. But he also wanted to see the world of today as well and what it was like. Aside from that horrible experience back at the Dairy Queen with Cobey's adoptive mother, city life was wonderful. Sure, he encountered a bad situation...but that could happen anywhere. Prairie Grove had certainly had it's share of bad scenarios. Why should world of the city be any different? He didn't wish he hadn't been a spectator to what had happened at the DQ earlier, because he got to meet Cobey as a result. And he was worth it. A knock at the door then brought the teenager out of his thoughts. "Come on in, it's un-locked!" He shouted so the knocker would hear him.
Megan then opened the door Kyle had left un-locked for her. "Knock, knock, knock." She said as she stepped into the suite. "It's me again." She said before closing the door. "Sorry it took so long, i was on the phone with the office, letting them know what happened at the Dairy Queen and where we are now." Said the CPS worker as she walked up to the table where Kyle and Cobey were. "I also informed them that we'll be staying here for the night." She said. "So...what'd i miss?"
"We ate all the food." Kyle said.
"And the sundae." Cobey added.
"Yes, i can see that." Megan said.
"Sorry, we didn't save anything for you, Miss Megan." Cobey apologized.
"Oh, no, don't worry about it, i had dinner at the office before April called." Megan said. "Bet you're both pretty full, huh?"
"Like turkeys. I don't think i have room for anything else." Cobey said.
"Not even for that ice-cream birthday cake i got for you at the DQ?" Kyle asked.
"Well...i suppose i have room enough for one piece." Cobey said.
"That's what i like to hear." Kyle said, smiling, before he got up to fetch the ice-cream cake from the refrigerator in the kitchen.
