Kana is the youngest and fastest engine on the Tall Controller's Railway. Unlike most of the other engines who use coal and water or diesel fuel, Kana runs on electricity, but instead of using electric cables above the tracks, she has a battery that she must keep charged. The other engines know they can never be as fast as Kana, but that doesn't stop some of them from trying to race her.

One day, Kana was racing along the line with her passengers. Her final stop would be in Kirkby Stephen where the Tall Controller lived. She was approaching Dalton Drawbridge when suddenly, she found herself going slower and slower. "What's happening?" she cried. She strained and struggled, but it was no use. Kana ground to a halt.

As Kana's Driver examined her, the Guard went to warn the Signalman. Then, Marcus came from the other direction. "Kana, why have you stopped here?" he asked. "This isn't a station."

"I don't know what happened," Kana replied. "I just stopped."

"Her battery still has plenty of power," said her Driver. "Something else must be broken, but I can't find the problem."

Kana was worried. "What am I going to do? My passengers are relying on me."

"I know," whistled Marcus. "I can help you finish the job. I was going back to Whitehaven anyway."

"Are you sure about that? You're not as fast as me, Marcus, no offense."

"I can still try."

Kana still wasn't sure, but she didn't want to keep her passengers waiting any longer. "…Alright, I passed an empty siding back there. If you can shunt me into it, you can take my coaches while I wait for help."

"Actually," said Marcus, "I thought I would take you with me. That way, I can take you to the Repair Yard afterwards."

"Won't I be too heavy?"

"I don't think so."

Kana's Guard returned and heard everything. "It's the only thing we can do," he said. "The Tall Controller says there are no other engines available."

"Don't worry, Kana," said Marcus confidently. "I may not be as fast as you, but I can still get your passengers to their destinations."

"Alright, let's do it."

Marcus went to turn around and was coupled in front. He took the biggest puff he could, and they were off. The stopped at the signal box and told the Signalman what they were doing. Kana was still worried, but the passengers didn't mind. Being late to their stations was much better than being stranded on the open line.

When they reached the Port in Barrow, Nathan was collecting trucks. "What happened, Kana?" he asked.

"Something broke inside my engine, so Marcus is helping me."

"I'm afraid you'll have to wait here for a while," said the Dock Manager. "Noel is due out with his train soon and we can't have any other delays."

"Oh no," groaned Kana, "I've never held anyone up before."

"Then it's a good thing you're not leaving first," teased Nathan.

"Take no notice," soothed Marcus. "He's only joking."

Later, Marcus and Kana approached a hill. Marcus had an idea. "I think I know how we can save some time. If you and I keep our brakes off until we start going too fast, we can get to the next Station sooner."

"What a good idea," said Kana, so that's just what they did. As the two engines started rolling down the other side of the hill, they started to speed up and when they reached the bottom, they were going much faster. "Whee!" cheered Kana, "that was fun!"

"I knew you'd like it," said Marcus.

Then, they approached Farmer Colin's Pig Farm. "Oh, look at those cute pigs," smiled Kana. "I usually pass by too fast to say 'hullo' to them properly."

"Now, you have a chance to." Marcus whistled as Kana honked her horn and Farmer Colin waved back from the field.

"I didn't know there was so much to see around here," Kana exclaimed.

"You'd be surprised what you can see when you slow down sometimes," puffed Marcus.

Kana was amazed by everything else she saw on their journey. There were birds and butterflies in the Dark Woods, people fishing at Coniston Water Lake and more animals at Farmer Briar's, but the most beautiful sight of all was the Wild Meadow. Flowers were everywhere and the breeze blew gently.

Kana loved it. "Wiering wheels, I've seen this Meadow many times before, but I've never been able to enjoy the flowers this much."

"It is beautiful, isn't it?" agreed Marcus.

Then there was trouble.

A workman was standing on the tracks in front of them waving a red flag. "What's the matter?" asked Marcus' Driver.

"Rabbits have dug holes under the tracks," said the workman. "The bank will sink if you try to cross it."

"So, we're stranded again?" wheeshed Marcus.

"Wait a minute!" shouted Kana. "What's that?"

Marcus' Driver and the workman went to look. There, hidden underneath the bushes…was another track. "Kana," said the workman, "you found the old route to Penrith! I didn't know it was still here."

"Do you think we can use it to get to Kirkby Stephen?" she asked.

"I suppose that could work, but go carefully. Those tracks are old and rusty."

Marcus rolled slowly along the old line and Kana's Driver rode in front checking the tracks as they went along. It was a long journey, but at last, they reached Penrith.

"Well done, Kana," cheered Marcus. "I never even noticed those old tracks before."

"Well, I wouldn't have seen them if I was going any faster."

Kana's Driver climbed back onboard, and Marcus raced off as fast as he could. "Kirkby Stephen, here we come!"

The two engines rolled into Kirkby Stephen just as the sun was beginning to set. The Stationmaster was waiting for them and apologized to the passengers, but they still weren't cross. "We enjoyed the adventure," they said, "and these two engines worked hard to put things right."

"Well done, you two," said the Stationmaster. "Now, you'd best be off, Marcus. They're waiting for Kana at the Repair Yard."

"Yes, Sir."

As Marcus puffed out of the Station, Kana noticed something else. "Marcus, look!" The two engines looked west and saw the sun going down. "I've never seen anything like this. It's wonderful. It's amazing what you can see when you go slow now and then."

"It certainly is," agreed Marcus.

And they rolled along slowly all the way to the Repair Yard.
