CHAPTER 1

Carlisle POV

It had been quite a slow day. I had had a planned surgery first thing in the morning, but other than that I had been visiting my patients in their rooms and I had been quite bored. Forks General Hospital was a small hospital and people usually came in with smaller problems than I had been used to working in bigger hospitals. I usually chose ER level work, because there was always something to do, someone to save. It was very intense for human doctors, but it was just enough for me.

It had been a slow day until about 3 p.m. I was doing paperwork in my office when nurse Smith rushed in.

"Dr. Cullen, they need you in the OR, the chief of police Charlie Swan's daughter was just brought in with extensive injuries."

"What happened to her?" I asked before I rushed out of my office.

"Some kind of a car accident. Chief Swan didn't make it."

I was at the door by then, I stared back at the nurse in horror. Chief Swan was a loved person in Forks, I liked the man too, as he had no problems with me or my family.

"Dr. Cullen, you need to go." She reminded me and remembered that his daughter still needed my help.

Outside, in the hallway, I made sure, it was empty and then I used as much vampire speed I could to get in the OR faster.

The young ER doctor was already working on her when I had gotten my cloves on.

"Dr. Cromwell, how's the patient?" I asked bursting into the room.

"Not good, I count at least three internal injuries and there's bleeding in the brain."

"I'll deal with the brain, you need to take care of the internal injuries."

"Yes, Dr. Cullen."

I was preparing to drill a hole in her skull, but before I looked at the unconscious girl on the operating table. She couldn't be more than 16 years old. A whole life ahead of her, she was so fragile, so broken. I knew I had to save her one way or the other.

I was just starting to operate when she flat lined. We were able to resuscitate her for the time being, but she fell into a coma and as Dr Cromwell told me, her internal bleeding was too extensive for her to pull through. She was dying of one thing or the other.

I ordered everyone out then. They stared at me for a long moment and then I had to shout which I rarely had to do to get them to leave. The girl just didn't have long, being alive only thanks to machines at this point.

I stared at the girl, the chart told me her name was Isabella Swan. Such a pretty name for a pretty girl.

"I'm sorry, Isabella, if that's not what you would choose but I can't let you die. I hope you forgive me if you would rather I didn't do it." I whispered In her ear only inches away from her. I gave her quick peck on the cheek and then sunk my teeth into her neck. She remained unconscious as the venom took effect.

Now I just needed to figure out how to get her to my house without anyone seeing and knowing. I hated that there were cameras everywhere in the hospitals nowadays. But then I remembered that the hospital morgue didn't have cameras and I could use its doors to take her out. Luckily the staff's parking lot wasn't far from that door.

When I got to my house, I parked in front of the it, took the girl out of the car and carrying her in my arms, I walked up the stairs in human speed. Even before I opened the door, I saw through the glass that they were waiting for me inside, all of them, my family. And now I was carrying another one inside.

"Carlisle, what's going on?" Alice chirped. "I saw you saving that girl's life by turning her, but why would you do that? Why her?"

I carried her to our medical room, laid her down on the table and they all followed me there. Only then did I answer the question.

I looked at her and moving hair off her face I looked at her.

"I don't know, there's something about her."

Then I looked at them, everyone was looking at me like I had grown two heads all of a sudden, everyone besides Edward, who was now on the other side of the table looking at her. He seemed mesmerized by her.

I had wanted him to finally find someone like all my other children had. Everyone, besides me and Edward had someone. I really wanted to let Edward have her if that was something she felt too. She was his age after all. But the other side of me and I didn't know how prominent that part was, was screaming for me to not let Edward anywhere near her. I wanted her, every cell in my body told me that she was mine, although I knew that at the end of the day she would make the choice, me, Edward or she would be another lonely soul in this household.

"Looks like there is some competition in the air." Emmett was being Emmett, completely amused by something that could tear this family apart.

Only then Edward came out of his reverie and looked at me, shocked.

"Carlisle?" He asked.

I nodded but said, "No. Yes. I mean, I don't know. And it's not important right now. I have to look after her until she comes out of this."

"I can do that," Edward said looking at her longingly.

"I'd rather you didn't."

Wait, did I say that?

Edward and everyone else looked at me again like I was crazy.

"I mean, I turned her, she's my responsibility."

And what a lovely responsibility she is

"As you wish," Edward said a bit venomously and left the room. Slowly everyone else spilled out of the room two. None of them comprehended what was going on in my head. Even I didn't know that.

I wasn't acting like myself. At all. I never had felt so strongly about anyone before.
