As Carina and Gabrielle settled into their corner booth in the bustling coffee shop, Carina breathed in the rich scent of espresso and freshly baked pastries. She took a sip of her cappuccino, savoring the warmth, but it wasn't long before she noticed Gabrielle's expectant gaze from across the table.
Carina chuckled, setting her cup down with a knowing look. "Alright, Gabrielle. I know that look—what do you want to know?"
Gabrielle grinned, leaning forward with her elbows on the table. "Oh, you know exactly what I want to know!" Her eyes sparkled with excitement. "Details, Carina. Wedding details! Have you and Maya picked a date? A venue? What are you two thinking? I need something to obsess over."
Carina couldn't help but laugh, loving her best friend's excitement. "Gabrielle, I'm sorry to disappoint, but we haven't even started planning," she admitted, her expression soft. "We're just… enjoying being engaged for a while. It still feels so new and special. Besides," she added with a smile, "with Alex and moving into the penthouse, it's been a little chaotic."
Gabrielle raised an eyebrow, her expression skeptical but affectionate. "Just enjoying being engaged?" she teased. "You're telling me Maya hasn't started making lists and organizing the entire thing in her head already?"
Carina laughed, shaking her head. "Oh, she absolutely has," she admitted. "Maya has ideas, believe me. But we're taking it slow for now. And don't worry," she said, reaching over to place a hand on Gabrielle's, "as soon as we do start planning, you'll be the first to know. I can't imagine doing this without my maid of honor, after all."
Gabrielle's eyes widened, her face lighting up with joy. "Are you serious? I get to be your maid of honor?" She clasped Carina's hands, a delighted grin spreading across her face.
"Of course," Carina replied warmly. "Who else could it be?"
Gabrielle looked close to tears as she squeezed Carina's hands. "Oh, you are in for it, then. I am going to plan the most extravagant, gorgeous, and Italian wedding Seattle has ever seen," she vowed, her voice brimming with excitement.
Carina laughed, feeling her heart swell with love and gratitude. "Good thing Maya and I both love a little Italian flair," she said, sipping her coffee as Gabrielle released her hands, already looking as though she were mentally planning the wedding details.
After a pause, Gabrielle tilted her head, her smile turning mischievous again. "Alright, one more question," she began, her tone teasing as she set her coffee down. "When am I getting more nieces or nephews, hmm?"
Carina felt a familiar warmth bloom in her cheeks as she chuckled nervously, glancing around the café. "Gabrielle," she whispered, trying to sound casual. "We're not quite there yet."
Gabrielle rolled her eyes, giving Carina a playful nudge. "Oh, please. You and Maya have practically been a family from day one. And Alex?" She gestured in an over-the-top fashion. "He's basically begging for a little sibling to boss around. Or at the very least, another playmate."
Carina's smile softened as she thought about it. She knew how much Maya loved Alex, how much they'd talked about a future together, including children. "We have talked about it," she admitted, her voice quiet. "And it's something I want—more than I even realized."
Gabrielle's expression softened as she reached out to cover Carina's hand. "Then don't let fear or timing stop you," she said gently. "You're a wonderful mom to Alex, and Maya… well, Maya's exactly the kind of person I'd want helping me raise kids if I were you." She smiled encouragingly. "And think of the team you two would make as parents."
Carina sighed, her heart full. "You're right," she murmured. "It's just a big decision, you know? And with so much going on, it's easy to say, 'Not yet.' But maybe… maybe we're closer than I thought." She looked up, meeting Gabrielle's eyes with a thoughtful smile. "And when the time's right, I'll make sure you're the first to know."
Gabrielle smiled, satisfied. "Good. Because you know I'm going to spoil the heck out of any little ones you bring into the world."
Carina laughed, squeezing her best friend's hand. "I wouldn't expect anything less." She leaned back, feeling lighter as she held Gabrielle's gaze, grateful for her unending support and encouragement.
They spent the rest of their coffee date talking about memories from Italy, catching up on Gabrielle's life, and laughing over the antics Alex had gotten up to with his "Zia Gabi" while Carina and Maya had been out.
As Carina finished her coffee, she leaned forward with a smile. "Actually, since you're here, want to help me run some errands for Alex's party next week? We're doing a whole superhero theme, and I could definitely use your creative input."
Gabrielle's face lit up with excitement. "Are you kidding? I'd love that! A superhero party for my favorite little hero? Say no more—I'm in."
The two of them spent the next few hours browsing through party stores and craft shops, hunting down superhero decorations, costumes, and enough themed party supplies to make any kid's dreams come true. Gabrielle was in her element, her creativity on full display as she helped Carina pick out everything from a mini cape for Alex to superhero masks and action figures to add to the goodie bags.
As Carina and Gabrielle made their way through the party store, they found themselves wandering into the costume aisle, where rows of superhero outfits hung in vibrant colors. Gabrielle's eyes lit up as she sifted through the costumes, pulling out one outfit after another, each one more outrageous than the last.
"Look at this one!" Gabrielle exclaimed, holding up a Wonder Woman costume, complete with a shiny gold tiara. She placed it on her head and struck a fierce superhero pose. Carina laughed, clapping her hands in delight.
"Oh, Gabrielle, you'd make a fabulous Wonder Woman," Carina teased, watching as Gabrielle continued to try on different accessories—at one point, she had on a Batman mask and a Superman cape at the same time, striking poses and making Carina giggle uncontrollably.
Gabrielle grinned, holding a Captain America shield in one hand and a Thor hammer in the other, as she twirled for Carina. "Who knew I'd be such a natural at saving the world?" she joked, throwing imaginary punches.
After a few more rounds of superhero antics, Carina pulled out the box holding the Ninja Turtle costumes they'd picked out earlier. "Okay, but… there's one costume we still haven't tried," she said, grinning as she held up the familiar green and orange masks, the iconic shells, and the colored bandanas.
Gabrielle raised an eyebrow, considering it for a moment before breaking into a huge smile. "The Ninja Turtles? Oh, absolutely! I'll be the fourth one! What's a team of turtles without Donatello?"
Carina handed her the purple bandana, laughing. "Exactly! Besides, Alex will love it if we're all turtles together." She gave Gabrielle a hug, feeling a rush of gratitude that her best friend was so willing to dive into the fun.
Gabrielle tied the purple bandana around her head and threw on the foam shell from the display rack, striking a ninja pose as she looked at Carina with mock intensity and in her best American accent he states, "Donatello, reporting for duty. Let's go get some pizza!"
Carina burst into laughter, the two of them giggling together in the middle of the store aisle. "Perfect! I think we're all set for the party now."
Carina scanned the aisles with a careful eye, her cart already brimming with superhero-themed decorations, but she wanted everything to be just perfect for Alex's big day. She picked up a pack of bright, colorful invitations featuring classic comic book sound effects like "BAM!" and "POW!"—just the right amount of excitement to set the tone for a superhero bash.
Next, she found a set of decorations that included everything from hanging swirl garlands to tablecloths, all emblazoned with Alex's favorite superheroes. "This will definitely make the place feel like it's straight out of a comic book," Carina mused, adding them to the cart.
Gabrielle watched, an amused smile on her face. "Carina, I think you're going all-out on this party."
Carina smiled, unabashed. "Of course I am! It's his superhero day, and I want it to be unforgettable."
As they moved down the aisle, Carina grabbed some extra items for good measure: a bundle of red, blue, and yellow balloons, streamers, superhero stickers for the goodie bags, and a set of superhero masks for each kid to wear. She even picked up a special banner that read, "Welcome Superheroes!" in bold letters to hang at the entrance.
Gabrielle smirked as Carina added one last item—a mini superhero cape that they could tie around Alex's chair. "I think our little hero is going to have the best day of his life."
Carina's eyes sparkled with excitement. "That's exactly the plan." With a final sweep of the store, they headed to the checkout, their cart filled to the brim with everything needed to bring Alex's superhero dreams to life.
After a productive day, the two returned to the penthouse with bags filled with decorations and treats. Carina opened the door to a quiet home, and as they made their way into the living room, a heartwarming sight greeted them: Maya and Alex were fast asleep on the couch, snuggled under a blanket. Alex's head rested on Maya's shoulder, a little smile still lingering on his face, and Maya had her arm wrapped protectively around him, both of them looking perfectly at peace.
Carina paused, her heart swelling at the sight of her family, a soft smile spreading across her face. She glanced over at Gabrielle, who was watching with an equally tender expression.
"They're perfect together," Gabrielle whispered, nudging Carina gently.
Carina nodded, her eyes softening. "They really are," she murmured, setting the bags down quietly so as not to disturb them. She took a moment to watch Maya and Alex, feeling grateful for the beautiful life she'd found with them.
Gabrielle leaned closer to Carina, her voice low. "Well, I think we did pretty well today, don't you?" she teased, nodding toward the bags of party supplies.
Carina laughed softly, nudging her back. "You're right; Alex is going to have the best superhero party ever."
They sorted through the supplies, spreading out the vibrant invitations, and Carina pulled out a pen, ready to start filling them out. Gabrielle grabbed an invitation too, grinning as she admired the comic book-style graphics.
Just as they settled into their work, Carina heard soft footsteps coming from the hallway. She looked up to see Maya, still slightly drowsy, making her way over to them. Without a word, Maya leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to Carina's forehead, then her lips. Carina's face softened as she smiled up at her, grateful for the quiet, grounding moment.
"Didn't mean to interrupt the invitation party," Maya said, a playful glint in her eye as she glanced over at the colorful pile on the table. "Looks like you two have been busy."
Gabrielle smirked, waving one of the invitations in the air. "Very busy. We've got an entire hero's lineup here—each of Alex's friends gets a VIP invite to superhero headquarters."
Maya chuckled, settling down in a chair next to Carina, her arm instinctively slipping around her shoulders. "Well, I'm glad I woke up in time to join. You know I can't resist party planning."
Carina smiled, resting her hand over Maya's. "Then grab a pen and help us out," she said, nudging a small stack of invitations toward her. "Between the three of us, we'll have these ready in no time."
As they worked together, filling out names and jotting down details, Maya occasionally leaned in, dropping a quick kiss on Carina's cheek or giving her shoulder a playful squeeze. Gabrielle rolled her eyes but smiled warmly, secretly delighted to see her best friend so happy.
They chatted as they worked, laughing and reminiscing about their own childhood parties and the thrill of dressing up as superheroes. Gabrielle shared stories of some of the more adventurous parties Carina had thrown back in Italy, complete with elaborate costumes and creative themes.
"Sounds like Carina's always had a talent for party planning," Maya teased, winking at Carina.
"Oh, you have no idea," Gabrielle replied, grinning. "Carina practically invented themed parties in our town."
Carina laughed, nudging Gabrielle. "And now I get to put all that practice to good use," she said, glancing fondly at Maya. "For Alex and for us."
As they continued to fill out the invitations, Maya couldn't help but stretch her arms again, rolling her shoulders as if to shake off the fatigue. She shot Carina a playful look, smirking. "You know, when I was in my twenties, I could stay up all night, get a few hours of sleep, and bounce right back. Now, I swear, I'm feeling every minute of last night."
Carina chuckled, leaning back with a glint of mischief in her eyes. "Speak for yourself, signora," she teased, nudging Maya. "I could go another round of dancing tonight and still be up bright and early for Alex tomorrow. No complaints here."
Maya laughed, a bit of mock disbelief in her tone. "Oh, really? No complaints at all?" She glanced over at Gabrielle, raising her eyebrows. "What about you, Gabrielle? Was she always this relentless?"
Gabrielle grinned, setting her pen down and crossing her arms. "Always. In fact, I think it's in the DeLuca genes," she said, nodding at Carina with a fond smile. "Back in Italy, Carina was always the one leading the charge on late-night adventures. No one could ever keep up with her. She'd still be going strong at sunrise while the rest of us were barely holding on."
Carina laughed, nudging Gabrielle in return. "Oh, please! You held your own just fine," she said, though her smile softened as she looked over at Maya. "But, I'll admit, some things are just a little more fun with you around, amore."
Maya's face softened, and she leaned closer, slipping an arm around Carina's shoulders. "You're a good motivator, that's for sure," she murmured, pressing a kiss to Carina's temple. "Even if I feel like I'm gonna need two naps to recover."
Gabrielle rolled her eyes in mock exasperation, picking up an invitation and waving it at them. "Alright, alright. Enough with the love fest! We still have work to do," she teased, grinning as she glanced at the two of them. "Unless you two are planning on hiring me as the official party planner."
"Oh, believe me, you're hired," Carina said with a laugh. "I'll pay you in pasta and wine if it means I get your help with everything. And let's be honest—you'll make the party ten times better."
Gabrielle chuckled, pulling over a few more blank invitations. "Well, I'll take that as payment," she said, grinning as she filled in another name. "And just wait until you see my ninja moves. I'll be the best Donatello Alex has ever seen."
Maya laughed, pulling Carina closer as they all settled back into their work. "Oh, he's going to be so thrilled. It's going to be one heck of a party."
As they finished setting up the last of the invitations and started to clear the table, they heard the soft sound of little footsteps padding down the hallway. Maya looked up just in time to see Alex appear in the doorway, his hair tousled from sleep, rubbing his eyes with one hand and clutching his favorite stuffed animal in the other.
He spotted Carina instantly, his face lighting up. "Mamma!" he called, his voice still small and sleepy, but full of love. Without a moment's hesitation, he came running toward her, arms outstretched.
Carina's heart melted at the sight, and she crouched down, opening her arms wide. "Oh, tesoro, come here!" she said, her voice soft and soothing. Alex practically launched himself into her embrace, snuggling against her chest as she wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. She pressed a gentle kiss to his head, rocking him slightly as he buried his face into her shoulder.
"Did you have a good nap, my little hero?" she whispered, brushing her hand gently through his messy curls.
Alex nodded, his small arms clinging tightly around her neck. "Mamma, I had a dream about superheroes," he murmured, his voice muffled against her shoulder.
Carina smiled, glancing over at Maya and Gabrielle, who were both watching the scene with warm expressions. "Really? Well, you must be ready for your superhero party then, hmm?"
Alex lifted his head, his sleepy eyes brightening. "Yes! Are we going to have superpowers too, Mamma?"
Maya chuckled, coming over and ruffling his hair. "Absolutely, buddy. We're going to be the strongest, fastest superheroes ever."
Alex giggled, still nestled in Carina's arms as he reached out one hand for Maya to hold. "And Zia Gabrielle too?"
Gabrielle stepped forward with a grin, tapping the purple bandana still draped around her neck. "You bet, piccolo! I'm going to be Donatello, your trusty Ninja Turtle sidekick."
Alex beamed, looking from Carina to Maya to Gabrielle with pure joy. Snuggled in Carina's arms, surrounded by his family, he looked content, as though he had everything he needed right there.
Carina kissed the top of his head once more. "We're all here, Alex," she said softly, her voice filled with love. "Always."
Carina held Alex close, feeling his warmth and joy, then leaned back slightly, smiling down at him. "Tesoro, would you like to help us pick out the design for your birthday cake?" she asked, her voice soft and filled with excitement.
Alex's eyes widened with enthusiasm, nodding eagerly. "Yes, Mamma! I want the coolest cake ever!"
Maya grinned, reaching over to the counter where her laptop was charging. She opened it up and set it on the table, motioning for Carina and Alex to join her. "Alright, little man," she said, pulling him onto her lap, "let's find the perfect superhero cake. We'll make sure it's just as cool as you."
Carina and Gabrielle pulled their chairs closer, the four of them gathered around the screen as Maya pulled up some cake designs online. They scrolled through cakes shaped like masks, cakes topped with miniature superheroes, and even a tiered cake with the iconic city skyline around the bottom layer.
Alex's face lit up with every new option. "That one!" he pointed at a cake shaped like the Ninja Turtles' sewer cover with little turtle heads poking out, then gasped as they found one with both Spider-Man and Batman swinging over a skyscraper. "Wait, that one! Or that one!" His excitement was contagious, and Carina chuckled, rubbing his back gently.
"Maybe we could combine a few of these ideas," Carina suggested, glancing at Maya with a knowing smile. "What do you think, amore? Maybe a cake with a few heroes for our little hero?"
Maya laughed, nodding. "I think that's a great idea. Alex, how about we pick two of your favorite heroes, and we'll make sure they're on the cake just for you?"
Alex thought seriously, his small brow furrowing in concentration. Finally, he looked up at both of them with a big grin. "I want Spider-Man and the Ninja Turtles!"
Gabrielle clapped her hands together with a smile. "Perfect choices! Spider-Man swinging over the cake with his web and the Ninja Turtles popping out—now that's a superhero cake!"
Maya typed in some notes as they all gathered around to finalize the plan to send to the bakery. The cake was ordered and the invitations were filled out and ready to hand out, everything for the perfect birthday park was coming together. Alex snuggled closer to her, his excitement bubbling over as he imagined his perfect cake.
Gabrielle leaned over, giving Alex an exaggeratedly curious look, which made him giggle and scrunch up his face as if trying to remember something important. Gabrielle leaned closer, whispering something in his ear. His eyes brightened with a mischievous glint, and he looked up at Maya and Carina with excitement.
"Mamma, Mommy… can Zia Gabrielle and I swim in your big bathtub?" he asked, his voice filled with the same eager anticipation he'd have if he were asking to swim in a real pool.
Carina raised an eyebrow, giving Gabrielle a playful, questioning look. Gabrielle shrugged, holding her hands up in mock innocence. "What?" she said, smirking. "It's a huge tub! Practically a swimming pool if you ask me."
Maya laughed, trying to picture the two of them splashing around in the oversized bathtub. She looked at Carina, amusement sparkling in her eyes. "Well, I mean, they're not wrong," she said. "That thing is definitely big enough for a few swimming lessons."
Carina shook her head, trying not to laugh as she looked back at Alex, who was watching them with hopeful eyes. "Alright, tesoro, but only if you promise not to flood the entire bathroom," she said, smiling.
Alex's face broke into a huge grin, and he practically bounced out of his chair with excitement. "Yay! Thank you, Mamma, thank you, Mommy!"
Gabrielle laughed, winking at Carina. "You won't regret this," she teased, grabbing Alex's hand and leading him toward the bathroom. "Let's go, piccolo! I'll be your lifeguard."
As they disappeared down the hall, Maya wrapped an arm around Carina's shoulders, shaking her head in amusement. "I hope that tub can handle it," she said, chuckling. "But they're going to have a blast."
Carina leaned her head on Maya's shoulder, a soft smile playing on her lips. "As long as it makes him happy," she murmured, watching Alex's pure joy as he chattered away to Gabrielle about their 'swimming pool adventure.'
As Gabrielle took Alex's hand, the two of them dashed off down the hall, their excitement echoing back to the kitchen. Carina and Maya stayed back, sharing a fond, bemused look. Maya's arm slipped around Carina's shoulders as they listened to Alex's gleeful chatter growing faint as he and Gabrielle approached the bathroom.
"Think we'll regret this?" Maya asked, a playful smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
Carina laughed softly, leaning her head against Maya's shoulder. "Probably," she admitted with a grin, "but seeing Alex this happy makes it worth the risk of a flooded bathroom. Besides, you saw how thrilled he was… and I think Gabrielle might be more excited than him!"
They stayed in the kitchen for a moment, soaking in the calm before the storm, then wandered down the hall, curious to see what Alex and Gabrielle were up to.
When they reached the doorway of the master bathroom, they found Gabrielle leaning over the edge of the enormous bathtub, helping Alex climb in, his giggles filling the room. Alex had his swim goggles on, which covered half of his face, and a pair of floaties on his arms that seemed adorably excessive in the giant tub. Gabrielle adjusted her purple Ninja Turtle bandana, fully committing to the theme as she made a show of checking for "safe swimming conditions."
"All clear, Captain Alex!" Gabrielle announced, giving him a thumbs-up.
Alex beamed, then jumped into the water with a little splash, instantly pretending to swim laps across the length of the tub. Gabrielle joined him, sitting on the edge with her feet in the water, encouraging his "freestyle" and pretending to be the lifeguard as he kicked and splashed around.
Carina and Maya leaned against the doorway, both trying to stifle laughter at the scene unfolding before them. "Is it just me, or do they look like they're in the middle of their own Olympic event?" Maya whispered, grinning.
Carina nodded, covering her mouth with a hand to keep from laughing too loudly. "Oh, absolutely," she replied, glancing at Maya with sparkling eyes. "We might have to sign him up for swimming lessons after this."
Just then, Gabrielle looked up and caught them watching. She gave a dramatic wave, beckoning them over. "Well, don't just stand there! Join in, if you dare," she called out with a smirk. "This is serious business, you know."
Maya chuckled and shook her head. "Oh, I think you two are handling this just fine," she teased, stepping further into the room. "But please, lifeguard Gabrielle, make sure our little guy doesn't splash too much. We'd like to keep the bathroom intact."
Alex glanced over, catching sight of his moms watching from the door, and beamed, his little face half-covered by his goggles. "Look, Mommy, I'm swimming like a turtle!" he announced proudly, kicking his legs energetically and making the water ripple.
Maya gave him a thumbs-up, her heart swelling with affection. "You're doing amazing, buddy! You're practically a pro," she encouraged, laughing as Alex continued to paddle with a fierce determination.
Gabrielle, ever the willing accomplice, started narrating their swim as if it were an intense competition. "And Captain Alex is taking the lead!" she announced, her voice deep and serious. "His strokes are strong, his goggles are fogged, but nothing can stop him!"
Carina leaned into Maya, her smile never fading as she watched the sheer happiness on Alex's face. "I swear, we might be in for some frequent bathtub 'swims' after this," she whispered, her tone a mix of amusement and adoration.
"Fine by me," Maya murmured, brushing a kiss against Carina's temple.
"We will go decide on dinner" Carina said as she and Maya turned to leave the room.
They stood together in the soft glow of the hallway light, Carina's arms slipping around Maya's waist as she relaxed into the embrace. Maya took a deep breath, her eyes meeting Carina's, an honesty flickering there.
"I need to tell you something," Maya began, her voice soft but steady. "When you first told me Gabrielle was coming… I was a little jealous."
Carina tilted her head slightly, surprised, a gentle smile forming on her lips as she listened. She squeezed Maya's hands, giving her a silent invitation to go on.
"I know it sounds silly now," Maya continued, her voice warm with a touch of vulnerability. "But… you two are so close, and I knew you had this whole history together. I worried that there was this… connection between you that maybe I couldn't understand or be part of. I even worried you might wish I was more like her."
Carina's eyes softened, and she reached up, brushing a hand along Maya's cheek. "Maya, amore," she murmured, her voice filled with affection. "Gabrielle is one of my oldest friends, yes. And we've been through a lot together. But she's my family in a different way. You are the love of my life."
Maya's eyes shimmered as she listened, feeling a mix of relief and warmth at Carina's words. Carina continued, her hand resting over Maya's heart. "You're the one I chose, the one I want to build a future with. And seeing you with Alex, sharing these moments as a family… it just confirms everything for me. There's no one else who could be more perfect."
Maya let out a breath, her hand covering Carina's as she pulled her close. "I guess I was so nervous about her visit that I didn't let myself enjoy it at first. But… seeing her with you, and with Alex, it's made me realize how lucky I am to have this with you. And… to have her as part of our family too."
Carina's eyes sparkled as she leaned up, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to Maya's lips. When she pulled back, her smile was filled with reassurance. "You don't ever need to worry, my love. You are my family, now and always."
Eventually, as Alex began to tire out, his kicks slowing down and his giggles softening, Gabrielle scooped him up, wrapping him in a plush towel as he let out a sleepy yawn. "Alright, little turtle," she murmured, patting his back gently. "It's time to dry off."
As Carina moved around the kitchen, the soft sound of chopping vegetables filling the air, Maya leaned against the counter, watching her with a relaxed smile. The cozy aroma of garlic and fresh herbs was already wafting through the kitchen, making it feel like home in a way Maya loved.
"So, what does your week look like, amore?" Maya asked, crossing her arms as she took a sip from her water.
Carina glanced over her shoulder, giving her a soft smile. "Busy as usual, but nothing I can't handle. Monday, I have a full schedule at the clinic, plus that follow-up meeting with Dr. Bailey and Addison about the new women's center," she said, stirring a pot on the stove. "Then Tuesday is Alex's first soccer practice, remember?"
Maya nodded, grinning. "Yes, he's been counting down the days for that. I'm actually off that day, so I'll be there to cheer him on. Hopefully, I can catch all the first practice action." She leaned closer, watching as Carina added a sprinkle of spices to the pot.
"That'll mean so much to him," Carina said, her expression softening. "And as for me, Wednesday is all surgeries—two in the morning and one in the afternoon. But on Thursday," she added with a smile, "I'll be done early enough to pick him up from preschool, which will be nice."
Maya smiled at the thought of Alex's happy face when he'd see Carina waiting for him after school. "That's perfect," she said, reaching over to sneak a taste of the sauce Carina was making. "I've got a full shift at Station 15 that day, but I'll be home by six, so we can still have dinner together."
Carina swatted her hand away playfully as she tried to dip her finger in again. "Patience!" she laughed, giving her a mock stern look. "And yes, let's keep that until dinner time. Then Friday… Let's see. I think Friday's clear for me, so maybe I can spend a little extra time at the clinic, organizing things for the new women's center."
Maya nodded thoughtfully, mentally ticking off the days in her head. "I'll be on an overnight shift Thursday into Friday, but I'll make sure I'm home in time to drop off Alex at preschool." She paused, watching Carina's graceful movements as she prepared their meal. "It feels good to finally have a rhythm, doesn't it?" she murmured, smiling at the balance they were finding between work, family, and each other.
Carina glanced over, her eyes warm. "It really does," she agreed, stirring the sauce gently. "I love how we're making all of this work, together." She turned, giving Maya a soft smile. "And Saturday, we're taking Alex to the park in the morning, right?"
"Yes! He's already talking about bringing his soccer ball to 'practice' with us," Maya said, chuckling. "I told him you'd be ready to show him all your Italian soccer skills."
Carina laughed, reaching over to give Maya's hand a quick squeeze. "Always. And then maybe afterward, we can sneak in a little date time for ourselves," she suggested, her tone warm and inviting.
Maya's face lit up at the idea. "I'm definitely up for that." She leaned in to steal a quick kiss before Carina turned back to her cooking, a content smile on her lips. "This week is shaping up to be perfect," she murmured, her voice filled with gratitude.
Just as Carina and Maya were savoring the peaceful moment, they heard the rapid patter of small feet against the hardwood floor, followed by a shriek of laughter. Alex came dashing around the kitchen island, completely naked, his face alight with pure joy and mischief as he zoomed past them.
As Carina and Maya tried to stifle their laughter, they watched Alex dart around the kitchen with a grin that stretched ear to ear, completely unbothered by the fact that he was stark naked. His eyes sparkled with mischief, and he let out a gleeful giggle as he made another lap around the island, narrowly dodging Gabrielle's attempts to catch him.
Gabrielle finally stopped, hands on her hips, clearly out of breath but trying to keep her composure. She held his tiny clothes in one hand and a fluffy blue towel in the other, her face a mix of exasperation and affection. "You are impossible, Alex!" she exclaimed, unable to hold back a laugh. "How is it that you always turn bath time into ninja training?"
Alex peeked out from his new hiding spot behind one of the kitchen stools, clearly delighted with himself. "Because I'm a ninja turtle, Zia Gabrielle!" he declared proudly. "And ninja turtles don't need clothes!"
Maya let out a laugh, giving Carina a raised eyebrow. "He has you there," she teased. "After all, turtles only wear shells, right?"
Carina covered her mouth to hide her smile, crouching down to Alex's eye level, trying to coax him out of his hiding spot. "Alex, tesoro," she said, her voice gentle but firm, "even ninja turtles need to wear something around the house. It's part of their disguise."
Alex's eyes widened with newfound interest, and he stepped out from behind the stool, considering her words. "Like a secret ninja suit?" he asked, his curiosity piqued.
Gabrielle seized the opportunity, nodding enthusiastically. "Yes! Exactly like that. And lucky for you, I happen to have your very own secret ninja turtle PJs right here," she said, holding up the green pajamas decorated with his favorite turtle, Leonardo, right across the front.
Alex's face lit up, and he dashed over, reaching for the PJs. But just as Gabrielle thought she had him, he squealed, dashing off again, evading her once more.
"Oh, you little rascal!" Gabrielle said, laughing as she gave chase.
Maya leaned back against the counter, watching the scene unfold with a grin as she shook her head in amusement. "And you thought my job was all about action," she joked, nudging Carina. "I think Zia Gabrielle has the tougher gig today."
Carina laughed, finally stepping in to assist. She raised her hands, palms up, as if making a serious proposal. "Alex," she said, keeping her tone calm, "how about a compromise? We can keep the ninja spirit alive with your pajamas. Then, you and Zia Gabrielle can keep practicing your ninja moves. Deal?"
Alex paused, clearly considering her offer, his face scrunched up in deep thought. He finally turned to Gabrielle with a cheeky grin. "Only if I get to be Leonardo."
Gabrielle laughed, nodding as she finally managed to drape the towel around him, pulling him into a warm hug. "Leonardo it is," she said, feigning exasperation but unable to hide the affection in her smile. "But next time, remind me to bring reinforcements. You're a tough ninja to catch."
Carina and Maya exchanged a warm look, both filled with joy at the sight of Alex so full of life and happiness. Once Gabrielle had finally wrangled Alex into his ninja turtle pajamas, he turned around proudly, showing off the Leonardo logo on his chest.
"Look, Mommy! I'm ready to save the day!" he shouted, striking a heroic pose.
Maya clapped, crouching down to his level with a smile. "You look amazing, buddy. The city is safe with you around," she said, pulling him in for a quick hug. "And who knew Leonardo's special move was running away from clothes?"
Alex giggled, wrapping his arms around her neck. "Mommy, Zia Gabrielle said I'm the fastest turtle ever!"
Gabrielle rolled her eyes with a smirk, setting the towel down and ruffling Alex's hair. "You really are, piccolo. And next time, I'll be more prepared for you."
As the laughter finally settled, Carina clapped her hands, drawing everyone's attention. "Alright, my little ninja and Zia Gabrielle," she announced with a warm smile, "dinner will be ready soon. I hope you're both hungry, because I made plenty!"
Alex's eyes lit up, and he tugged on Maya's hand. "Mommy, can we have superhero food tonight?" he asked, his voice filled with the unbridled excitement only a four-year-old could muster.
Carina chuckled, ruffling his hair. "Well, I made my special pasta, which I think Leonardo would definitely approve of," she said, giving Gabrielle a knowing look. "And if you eat it all, I'm pretty sure it'll give you superpowers for soccer practice."
Alex's face turned serious as he considered her words. "Really?" he asked, eyes wide with awe. "Like… super speed?"
Carina nodded, playing along. "Absolutely. But only if you finish all your pasta, capisce?"
"Capisce!" Alex replied, giving her an enthusiastic nod as he hopped over to his seat, his face lit up with anticipation.
Gabrielle chuckled as she pulled out a chair, glancing over at Carina. "Well, I could use a little superpower boost myself, so I hope you made extra."
Carina laughed, sliding a dish of pasta onto the table, the aroma filling the room. "Plenty for everyone," she assured them. "And who knows? Maybe I'll gain a few powers myself."
