After dinner, as the plates were cleared and everyone settled back, Gabrielle leaned over to Alex, her eyes alight with excitement. "Alex, have you ever seen the real Batman?" she asked, raising her eyebrows as if revealing a big secret.

Alex's eyes went wide. "Real Batman? Like… not the cartoon?" He looked at Carina and Maya, his little face filled with curiosity.

Gabrielle laughed, nodding. "Oh yes, the real Batman, with Christian Bale. He's so cool, you'll love him!" She gave Carina a mischievous grin. "Plus, let's be honest, he's kind of the hottest Batman ever. No offense to the cartoons, but Christian Bale's Batman is in a league of his own."

Carina crossed her arms, giving Gabrielle a skeptical look. "I don't know… so far, we've just let him watch the cartoon version. The movies can get pretty intense, you know?" she said, her protective instincts flaring up. "And I'd rather not deal with nightmares tonight."

Gabrielle waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, come on, Carina! It's not much scarier than the cartoon, I promise. Besides, I'll be here the whole time. We can always skip the scarier parts if needed, right?" She turned her attention back to Alex, who was bouncing slightly in his seat, eager to see this "real" Batman.

"Please, Mamma?" Alex begged, giving her the classic puppy-dog eyes he knew she couldn't resist. "I'll be brave. And Zia Gabrielle said she'd sit with me!"

Caught between her hesitation and Alex's hopeful gaze, Carina sighed, looking over to Maya. "Alright, Maya, it's up to you. You make the final call."

Maya chuckled, glancing from Alex to Gabrielle and back to Carina. She could see how excited both of them were, and the idea of making a special memory with Alex and his aunt warmed her heart. "Alright, alright," she said, raising her hands in surrender. "I say we give it a shot. But!"—she looked sternly at Alex and Gabrielle—"the second it gets too scary, we're stopping, okay?"

Alex and Gabrielle cheered, exchanging a high-five as Carina shook her head, smiling despite herself. They all settled on the couch, Alex nestled between Maya and Gabrielle with his blanket pulled up just in case he needed to "hide" from any parts.

As the movie started, Alex's eyes were glued to the screen, his little mouth hanging open as Christian Bale's Batman appeared in his iconic black suit, brooding and intense. Gabrielle kept leaning over, whispering to him about each cool gadget and amazing action scene, while Carina watched with one eye on the screen and the other on Alex, ready to intercept if it became too much.

But as the movie went on, it became clear that Alex was completely enraptured, sitting forward with wide eyes, hanging on every scene. Gabrielle couldn't resist leaning over to Carina and whispering, "See? I told you it wasn't too much for him."

Carina chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Alright, you win this round," she whispered back, though her smile was warm. She looked over at Maya, who was equally captivated by the movie and the memory they were making together.

By the end, as the credits rolled, Alex turned to Gabrielle with awe in his eyes. "That was the best Batman ever! Can we watch it again tomorrow?"

Gabrielle laughed, ruffling his hair. "Maybe another night, little ninja turtle. But I'm glad you loved it!"

Carina glanced at the clock and gave Alex a gentle nudge. "Alright, my little Batman, it's time for bed," she said, her voice soft but firm. "We have a big day tomorrow, remember? We're taking Zia Gabrielle to the aquarium."

Alex's face lit up at the reminder, but he quickly covered a yawn with his hand. "I can't wait to show you all the fishies, Zia Gabrielle," he murmured, his eyes already starting to droop.

Gabrielle grinned, ruffling his hair. "Oh, I can't wait either, piccolo. You'll have to be my tour guide."

Alex snuggled deeper into his blanket, then looked up at Gabrielle with pleading eyes. "Zia Gabrielle, will you read my bedtime story tonight?" he asked, his voice full of sleepy hope.

Carina gave Gabrielle a nod, smiling. "Alright, Zia Gabrielle, it's all yours tonight."

Gabrielle's face softened, and she held out her hand to Alex. "I would love to," she said, as he took her hand and led her toward his room.

Once they were all settled in his room, Alex nestled under his covers while Gabrielle sat beside him, holding his favorite storybook. She flipped to the first page, her voice warm and gentle as she began to read. Carina and Maya stood quietly by the door, watching as Alex listened with wide eyes, hanging on every word.

Gabrielle's animated voice brought the story to life, adding little gestures and funny voices that had Alex giggling even in his sleepy state. She paused every so often, giving Alex a moment to join in or ask a question, and he looked utterly delighted to have her there, reading to him.

As Gabrielle reached the end of the story, she leaned down and gave Alex a gentle kiss on the forehead. "Goodnight, little ninja turtle," she whispered.

Alex beamed, his eyelids already heavy. "Goodnight, Zia Gabrielle… goodnight, Mamma… goodnight, Mommy," he murmured, his voice fading as he drifted off.

In the middle of the night, the quiet of the penthouse was interrupted by the soft sound of footsteps padding down the hallway, followed by a sniffle and a soft, shaky cry. Carina stirred first, opening her eyes to see Alex standing beside their bed, clutching his stuffed animal with tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Mamma… Mommy…" he whimpered, his voice trembling. "Can I sleep with you?"

Without hesitation, Carina scooted over, pulling back the covers as Maya woke up, her expression softening instantly. Alex crawled into the bed between them, burrowing into Carina's arms as she gently stroked his hair. "Oh, tesoro," she murmured, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Did you have a bad dream?"

He nodded, still sniffling as he clung to her. "Batman was fighting the bad guys, and… and I was scared," he admitted, his voice tiny as he buried his face in her shoulder.

"Remember, Alex," Carina whispered softly, her voice filled with reassurance, "Batman always wins in the end, and he keeps everyone safe. And we're here to keep you safe too."

As Alex settled between them, his small body trembling slightly as he clung to Carina, Maya reached over to gently run her fingers through his soft curls, offering him every bit of comfort she could. His tiny hand gripped her own as if afraid to let go, his fingers warm and slightly sticky from the grip of his stuffed animal. Carina wrapped her arm around him, holding him close as she whispered soothing words in Italian, her voice a soft lullaby that slowly began to calm his shaky breaths.

"It's okay, tesoro mio," she murmured, her hand moving gently over his back in a steady rhythm. "You're safe here with Mamma and Mommy. Nothing can hurt you now."

Maya leaned over, her lips pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead as she brushed her hand along his back. "You're a brave little turtle, remember?" she whispered, smiling softly. "And brave turtles always find their way back home, safe and sound."

Alex's breathing began to even out, his head sinking deeper into the pillow as he let out a soft sigh. The tension in his little body started to melt away, soothed by the warm cocoon of love and safety created by the two people he trusted most in the world. Maya and Carina exchanged a glance over his head, sharing a quiet understanding of the moment—a wordless acknowledgment of how much their lives had changed with Alex at the center of it all, and how willing they were to do anything to protect him.

As the night stretched on, they lay there with Alex nestled between them, their breaths slow and steady in unison. Carina's hand found Maya's, and they held onto each other as they continued to watch over Alex. The stillness of the night wrapped around them, a soft, comforting silence filled only by the gentle rise and fall of Alex's chest.

After a while, Carina leaned close, her voice barely a whisper as she looked at Maya. "I love you," she murmured, her eyes filled with love.

Maya squeezed her hand, her own gaze warm as she looked at Carina and then at Alex. "I love you too. I wouldn't trade a single part of this, not even the middle-of-the-night wake-up calls." She brushed another soft kiss against Alex's temple, her heart swelling as she felt the calmness settle over him.

With Alex finally drifting into a deeper, peaceful sleep, Carina relaxed back into the pillow, her hand still resting on his back. She listened to the faint, rhythmic sound of his breathing, letting it lull her into a sense of peace. Maya shifted slightly, pressing closer to Carina, one arm resting protectively over Alex.

Carina moved quietly around, brewing a pot of coffee, her movements slower than usual after the interrupted night. Just as the coffee finished dripping, Gabrielle wandered in, her hair tousled and eyes still sleepy.

"Buongiorno," Gabrielle mumbled, stretching her arms as she reached for a mug.

Carina handed her a freshly brewed cup, her lips curling into a wry smile. "Buongiorno, sorella," she replied, a hint of mischief in her voice. "I take back everything I said last night about the movie being perfectly fine for Alex."

Gabrielle raised an eyebrow, looking at Carina over the rim of her coffee mug. "Oh?" she asked, curious. "Why? He seemed fine when we tucked him in. What happened?"

Carina leaned against the counter, shaking her head with a sigh. "Someone had a nightmare in the middle of the night," she said, her tone softening as she thought of Alex's tear-streaked face when he crawled into bed with them.

Gabrielle's eyes widened, and she winced, clearly feeling a bit guilty. "Oh no! Was he really that scared?" she asked, setting her mug down. "I thought he was ready for it! Poor little guy…"

Carina chuckled, lifting a hand to reassure her sister. "He was fine after a little snuggling, but let's just say that he was very grateful for a safe spot between his Mamma and Mommy last night."

Gabrielle relaxed, a soft smile forming on her lips. "Well, I can't say I blame him. I remember the first time we watched a 'scary' movie when we were kids. I had a few nightmares myself."

Carina nodded, letting out a quiet laugh. "Oh, believe me, I remember. You ended up in my bed every single time," she teased, nudging Gabrielle.

Gabrielle laughed, nodding in agreement. "Okay, fair enough. I guess the tough stuff should wait until he's a bit older," she admitted. "Still, it was such a good movie…"

Carina smiled, shaking her head. "And Alex was mesmerized… until he wasn't. But thank you, really, for making that night special for him. He woke up this morning still excited to be Batman's sidekick."

Gabrielle beamed, taking a satisfied sip of her coffee. "Well, then, I consider my job as Zia a success. But I promise, no more superhero nightmares. I'll stick to cartoons and bedtime stories for now."

Carina chuckled, leaning in to give her a grateful hug. "That sounds like a plan."

they heard the rapid patter of little feet followed by the sound of laughter coming from around the corner. Alex came tearing into the kitchen, his face bright with excitement and cheeks flushed, wearing his Leonardo pajamas and clutching his stuffed turtle, his "sidekick."

"Mamma! Zia Gabrielle!" he called out, his voice bubbling with energy as he skidded to a stop in front of them. "Mommy's trying to catch me!" He gave them a mischievous grin, glancing over his shoulder just as Maya appeared in the doorway, slightly out of breath but laughing.

"Oh, you think you can get away from me, huh?" Maya teased, putting her hands on her hips as she pretended to size up her opponent.

Alex squealed, dashing behind Gabrielle for cover. "Help me, Zia!" he cried, peeking out from behind her legs.

Gabrielle raised her eyebrows, playing along. "Hmm, I don't know… I might be on Mommy's side," she said, crossing her arms and giving him a mock-serious look. "After all, she looks like she's got some superpowers too."

Carina grinned, watching the little game unfold, the warmth of the morning wrapping around them. She shot a playful look at Maya. "Well, Mommy, what do you say? Think you're fast enough to catch a Batman?"

Maya's eyes sparkled with determination. "Absolutely," she replied, pretending to roll up her sleeves. She lunged forward, causing Alex to shriek with laughter as he dashed out from behind Gabrielle and ran in a small circle around the kitchen.

Carina caught him, scooping him up into her arms. "Got you, Batman!" she declared, peppering his face with kisses as he laughed, squirming in her hold.

"Mommy, help!" Alex laughed, reaching for Maya, who stepped forward, grinning.

Maya leaned in, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. "Team effort, Batman. Mamma and I work together!" She glanced over at Carina, her eyes warm. "Isn't that right?"

Carina nodded, wrapping one arm around Maya and the other around Alex. "Always, my bambini. Always a team."

As the laughter in the kitchen began to settle, Maya looked at Carina and Gabrielle with a playful glint in her eye. "How about we make this morning extra special?" she suggested, shifting Alex in her arms. "What do you say to breakfast out at Pike Place and then heading over to the aquarium?"

Alex's eyes lit up, and he clapped his hands. "Yes, yes! Can we get pancakes?" he asked, his voice full of excitement.

"Of course," Carina replied, smiling at his enthusiasm. "And maybe we'll find a place with the best pancakes in all of Seattle," she added, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

Gabrielle grinned, setting down her coffee cup. "Oh, I am so in! It's been too long since I've been to Pike Place. And I can't think of a better way to start our adventure before the aquarium." She glanced at Alex. "Maybe we'll even spot some fish there, warming up for the big show."

Carina helped Alex button his shirt, her fingers working gently and steadily as she fastened each one. "Almost ready, tesoro," she said, straightening the collar and brushing his hair back gently. "Today's going to be so much fun, huh?"

Alex nodded enthusiastically, his eyes shining with anticipation. "Mamma, I can't wait to see the big fishies!" He bounced on his toes, looking toward Gabrielle, who was standing by the door, slipping on her shoes.

Gabrielle winked at him, tying her scarf with a flourish. "And the sea turtles," she added, watching as his grin grew wider. "I'll need my brave little tour guide to show me where they're hiding."

Maya walked out of the bedroom, keys in hand, a big smile on her face as she looked over at her family. "Alright, everyone," she said, giving a playful clap. "Do we have everything? Coats, hats, wallets?" She ticked off the list, looking over each one of them as they nodded.

Carina slipped her arm through Maya's as they headed toward the door, feeling the excitement radiating off of Alex and Gabrielle. Maya looked at Carina, a soft look in her eyes. "Pike Place and the aquarium—this day's going to be unforgettable."

As they stepped into the crisp Seattle air, Alex held tightly to Maya's and Carina's hands, swinging his feet happily between them. The whole city seemed alive, matching their anticipation for the day ahead. They were a family, and they were ready to take on the world—or at least, a day filled with pancakes and sea creatures.

As they walked down the bustling streets toward Pike Place, Alex trotted beside Gabrielle, his small hand in hers, his face animated as he recounted one of his favorite memories.

"Zia Gabrielle, did you know that Mommy and I saw real orcas?" he exclaimed, his eyes wide with excitement.

Gabrielle's eyebrows shot up, and she gasped dramatically. "Orcas? Like the big black-and-white whales? You saw them with your own eyes?"

Alex nodded enthusiastically, gripping her hand tighter as he continued, "Yeah! Mommy and I were at the beach park one day, and everyone was looking at the water. And then—bam! We saw their big tails splash and everything!"

Maya, overhearing, chuckled as she glanced over. "It was incredible, Gabrielle. We were just walking by, and suddenly this whole pod appeared, close enough that you could see their fins cutting through the water." She smiled at the memory, remembering Alex's awe-struck expression as they watched the orcas glide through the waves.

Gabrielle looked down at Alex, her face glowing with interest. "Wow, Alex! You're so lucky. Not everyone gets to see such magical creatures in real life. Did they do flips and jumps too?"

Alex nodded again, his voice growing excited. "One of them even did a big jump! It was like it wanted to say hello to me," he said, his hands flaring out to demonstrate the size of the splash. "Mommy lifted me up so I could see them better. They're even bigger than I thought!"

Gabrielle gave his hand a gentle squeeze, grinning. "Sounds like you're a bit of an orca whisperer, huh? I think the fish at the aquarium are going to be lucky to meet you, too."

When they got to Pike Place, the lively energy of the market seemed to captivate Alex instantly. His eyes grew wide as he took in the bustling stalls, the colorful displays of flowers, fresh produce, and fish stacked high on ice. Everywhere he looked, there was something new to see: vendors tossing fish across the stalls with expert precision, musicians playing lively tunes, and the hum of people chattering and laughing around him.

Carina guided them toward a cozy restaurant with a beautiful view overlooking the Puget Sound, a spot she remembered from her early days exploring Seattle. She chose a table by the large window so Alex could watch the boats drifting in the distance, the waves sparkling under the morning sun. Alex could hardly pull his gaze away from the scene before him, his little hands pressed against the glass as he stared out at the expanse of blue.

"Look, Mamma!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with awe as he pointed out a ferry crossing the sound. "It's like we're in the middle of a big ocean!"

Carina laughed softly, pulling her chair closer to him. "It does feel like that, doesn't it? Seattle has its own kind of magic," she replied, her eyes sparkling as she watched him.

The server arrived to take their order, and they made sure to pick out a stack of pancakes for Alex with extra whipped cream and strawberries. As they waited for their food, Carina pointed out landmarks along the water, explaining the sights to Alex while Gabrielle joined in, sharing funny stories of their own family travels back in Italy.

When the food arrived, Alex's pancakes came piled high, decorated with a generous helping of whipped cream and fresh berries. His face lit up, and he looked at his plate in awe. "These are the biggest pancakes ever, Mamma!"

Once they finished, Carina leaned over, brushing a crumb off Alex's cheek. "Alright, my little explorer. Ready for the next adventure?"

Alex beamed, nodding eagerly. "Yes! The aquarium! Let's go see the fishies!"

As they stepped outside the restaurant, Alex's attention shifted from the bustling market back to the water, his gaze lingering on a nearby ferry boat as it drifted across the sound. He squinted at it, his little brow furrowing thoughtfully before he turned to Carina, a serious expression on his face.

"Mamma," he asked, tugging at her hand, "is that the boat that crashed and made us go to the hospital?"

Carina knelt down beside him, her eyes soft with understanding. She brushed a hand through his hair, comforting him as she explained. "No, tesoro," she said gently, "that boat isn't sailing anymore. After the accident, they made sure it wouldn't hurt anyone else."

Alex seemed relieved, nodding solemnly as he turned his gaze back to the water, his curiosity satisfied.

Gabrielle, however, was left standing with a look of confusion and concern. "Accident? What accident?" she asked, glancing between Carina and Maya. "You never mentioned anything about a ferry crash."

Carina sighed, giving Gabrielle an apologetic look. She glanced at Maya, who nodded, encouraging her to share. Taking a deep breath, Carina explained, "A few months ago, there was an accident… a ferry crashed into the bridge. Alex and I were on the bridge at the time, and it caused a major pile-up."

Gabrielle's eyes widened in shock, and she instinctively reached for Carina's hand. "Carina, that sounds… terrible. How badly were you hurt?" Her voice softened, a mix of worry and hurt lingering. "Why didn't you call me? You know I would've been on the next flight here."

Carina squeezed her sister's hand, guilt flickering in her eyes. "I know, Gabrielle. I should have. But things were chaotic. I had my arm in a cast, and Alex had a broken leg…" She glanced over at Maya, giving her a soft smile. "Maya took care of us, both of us. She was our rock through all of it."

Maya placed a comforting hand on Carina's shoulder. "It was a tough time, but we managed together," she added, her tone warm and steady. "We were just focused on healing and getting through it day by day."

Gabrielle shook her head slowly, still taking it all in. "I understand, but…" She gave Carina a gentle look, her eyes glistening. "Next time, just call me. I'll be here, no questions asked. You're my sister, and I want to be there for you."

Carina nodded, pulling Gabrielle into a hug. "I know, Gabrielle. I'll remember that," she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude. "I promise."

As they pulled back, Alex reached out, taking both their hands. "It's okay, Zia Gabrielle," he said in his small, reassuring voice. "Mommy and Mamma kept me safe. And now we're all together."

Gabrielle smiled softly, blinking back the tears that had threatened to fall. "That's right, piccolo. We're all together." She squeezed his hand and then glanced at Carina and Maya, her heart full. "And we're not letting any ferry boats or anything else change that."

Alex's face lit up the moment he spotted the towering glass doors adorned with images of sea creatures, and he raced ahead, nearly dragging Carina and Maya by the hands as they followed with Gabrielle trailing behind, laughing at his eagerness.

Inside, the dim lighting and cool, underwater atmosphere instantly transported them into a serene, colorful world. Alex pressed his face to the first giant tank they encountered, mesmerized by the gentle sway of the kelp forest and the vibrant fish darting in and out. Carina knelt beside him, pointing out each unique creature as they swam by.

"Look, Alex! There's a bright yellow one," she whispered, her voice matching the calm of the tank. "And see that one? It's called a Garibaldi fish."

Alex's eyes widened, his face filled with awe. "They look like they're having a party in there!" he giggled, reaching up to touch the glass as though he could reach out to join them.

Maya chuckled, leaning down to whisper to Carina. "I think he's officially hooked."

Moving deeper into the aquarium, they wandered through exhibits featuring creatures from different ecosystems: seahorses delicately floating through coral reefs, neon-colored jellyfish pulsing under black lights, and sharks slowly circling their tank with a silent, mesmerizing presence. At each stop, Alex's excitement only grew, his endless questions about every creature and his attempts to mimic their movements delighting Carina and Maya.

As they reached the touch pool, Alex practically dragged Gabrielle to the edge, his face glowing with excitement. "Zia Gabrielle, you have to try it!" he urged, his eyes darting from her face to the water, where starfish, sea cucumbers, and anemones waited just below the surface.

Gabrielle glanced at the water, looking a bit hesitant. "Oh, I don't know, Alex… they look a little slimy," she said, wrinkling her nose with playful hesitation.

Alex grinned, clearly thrilled at the chance to teach her something new. "It's okay, Zia Gabrielle," he said confidently, his little hand reaching out to guide hers. "You just have to use two fingers, like this." He held up his index and middle fingers, showing her exactly how to do it. "And you have to be really gentle, so you don't hurt them."

Carina and Maya exchanged a warm look, both touched by the way Alex took on his new role as teacher with such enthusiasm. Carina nudged Gabrielle encouragingly. "You've got the best guide in the aquarium, Gabrielle. If Alex says it's safe, you can trust him."

Gabrielle sighed dramatically, looking down at Alex with a grin. "Well, since my brave nephew says it's okay…" She held out her hand, positioning her fingers just as Alex had shown her.

Alex beamed, guiding her hand toward a sea star with a little nod of encouragement. "See? It's not scary. They're just a little squishy, but they're really friendly."

Gabrielle's fingers lightly brushed the rough, knobbly surface of the sea star, and her eyes widened. "Oh! It's not slimy at all! It feels… like a little rock!"

Alex giggled, clearly proud of himself. "See? You're a natural! You could even touch that one," he said, pointing to an anemone nearby, "but it feels like a tickle."

Gabrielle looked up, impressed. "Ticklish anemones? Well, aren't you full of surprises," she said, giving him a wink.

As they continued to explore the touch pool, Alex patiently showed her each creature, sharing every little detail he'd learned as if he were the aquarium expert himself. By the time they'd finished, Gabrielle was completely won over, even daring to touch a slippery sea cucumber under Alex's careful guidance.

Maya leaned down, whispering in Carina's ear with a smile. "Looks like we've got a little marine biologist on our hands."

And as Gabrielle followed Alex's lead, she gave him a hug, whispering, "Thank you, Alex. You're the best guide Zia could ask for."

After the excitement of the touch pool, they continued their journey through the aquarium, moving from one fascinating exhibit to the next. Alex's energy seemed boundless as he pulled them from tank to tank, marveling at everything from the glowing jellyfish to the tiny, darting clownfish that reminded him of his favorite movie.

When they finally made it to the sea lion show, they found seats near the front. Alex clapped with excitement as the sea lions swam into view, their sleek bodies gliding through the water with ease before leaping into the air. The trainer began the show, guiding the sea lions through a series of impressive jumps, flips, and tricks. Alex's laughter filled the space, his little hands clapping with every leap.

Maya, watching him, noticed him starting to rub his eyes between claps. His blinking grew slower, and he leaned a little more into her side, snuggling close as if the day's excitement had finally caught up with him. She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, a soft smile forming as she saw the telltale signs of fatigue setting in.

"Hey, buddy," she whispered, leaning down to his level. "You feeling tired?"

Alex shook his head defiantly, though his eyes were already half-closed. "No, Mommy… I'm… I'm watching the sea lions…" he mumbled, his words trailing off as he fought to stay awake.

Carina, noticing the exchange, leaned over and gently stroked his hair. "You've had a big day, haven't you, tesoro?" she said, her voice filled with tenderness. "Maybe a little rest wouldn't hurt."

Gabrielle smiled, reaching over to give his hand a squeeze. "Plus, sea lions need naps too, don't they? Even superheroes need a little rest sometimes."

As they began to leave the sea lion show, Alex stirred in Maya's arms, his face scrunching up as he fought against the sleep tugging at his little body. He rubbed his eyes again, a frustrated whimper escaping him as he began to fuss.

"No, Mommy… I don't wanna… I don't wanna go home," he mumbled, tears welling up as he looked around, his eyes red and heavy with exhaustion. He reached for Carina, his voice growing more upset. "Mamma… I want… I want more fishies…"

Carina immediately wrapped him in a comforting hug, gently smoothing his hair as she rocked him back and forth. "Oh, tesoro, I know," she murmured softly. "It's so hard to say goodbye to all the fish and sea lions, isn't it?"

But Alex's frustration only seemed to grow, his little fists curling as he fought back more tears. "I don't wanna nap! I'm not tired!" he insisted, though his drooping eyelids told a different story.

Maya shared a sympathetic look with Carina, nodding in silent understanding. She took Alex's hand, her voice warm and soothing. "Hey, buddy, I know you want to keep going, but we're not saying goodbye forever. We can come back another day, and you'll get to see all the fish and sea lions again, I promise."

Gabrielle knelt down beside him, her face gentle with understanding. "Alex, I'm tired too," she said with a wink, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "You know, after a good nap, you'll have all the energy to come back and explore more."

Alex sniffled, clinging to both Carina and Maya as his little body finally started to relax. "But I liked it here… a lot," he mumbled, his eyes half-closed even as he tried to keep them open.

Carina leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "I know, tesoro. It's okay to feel sad about leaving. We had such a wonderful day together, and there will be so many more to come."

With another yawn, Alex finally surrendered to the comfort of Carina's arms, his fingers clutching her sweater as he drifted off to sleep. Maya wrapped her arm around Carina, giving her a tender squeeze, while Gabrielle brushed a comforting hand over Alex's back.

As they left the aquarium, Gabrielle pointed down the bustling pier, her eyes alight with excitement. "How about a quick tour of the sound?" she suggested, gesturing toward a nearby ferry. "It's just a few piers down, and I've heard it's a beautiful ride this time of day."

Carina shifted a sleeping Alex into Maya's arms. Carina hesitated, her fingers instinctively tightening around Maya's. Memories of the accident crept into her mind, stirring a faint sense of unease. She felt the familiar knot in her stomach tighten at the thought of boarding another boat, especially with Alex and Maya. But as she glanced down at her son, asleep and peacefully cradled in Maya's arms, she reminded herself that facing this fear might help her heal from the trauma that lingered since the accident.

Maya noticed the hesitation on Carina's face, her thumb softly brushing over Carina's hand as a silent reassurance. "It's okay if you don't want to, Carina," she said gently, searching her eyes.

But Carina took a steady breath, nodding with determination. "No… I think I need to do this," she replied, her voice filled with a quiet strength. "It'll be good for all of us. And," she added with a small smile, "I want Alex to know that we don't have to be afraid of the water."

Gabrielle beamed, giving Carina's shoulder a supportive squeeze. "That's it," she said softly. "I'll be right there with you."

As they settled onto a bench to wait for the tour to begin, Gabrielle, ever attentive, volunteered to grab coffees for everyone. She gave Carina a reassuring smile and a quick squeeze of the hand before heading to the small café on the pier.

Once Gabrielle was out of earshot, Maya turned to Carina, her gaze soft and steady. She reached over, taking Carina's hand in hers. "You know," she began gently, "you don't have to do this. I don't want you to feel pressured, Carina."

Carina gave her a small smile, but Maya could see the mix of emotions in her eyes. "I know," Carina replied, squeezing Maya's hand. "But I think… maybe it's time to take a step forward." She paused, glancing toward the water with a hesitant sigh. "I don't want the accident to keep me from feeling at peace here, especially with you and Alex."

Maya's thumb brushed over Carina's knuckles in a comforting rhythm. "If at any point you feel uncomfortable, we decide not to go. I'll support you no matter what," she whispered, her voice full of warmth and understanding.

Just then, Gabrielle returned with the coffees, beaming as she handed them each a cup. "One mocha for you, Carina and a latte for Maya"

Carina took a deep breath, taking in the warm aroma of coffee as she glanced at the water and then back at Maya. "I think I'm ready," she said quietly, her voice steady and filled with a hint of hope.

As they settled into their seats, the boat pulled smoothly away from the pier, cutting through the gentle waves of the sound. The hum of the engine and the rhythmic sway of the boat seemed to wrap around them, a peaceful, almost hypnotic sensation that soothed Carina's lingering anxiety. She took in the expanse of water stretching out before them, the Seattle skyline gradually receding into the background, and felt her heart begin to lighten.

With Alex still asleep, his head tucked snugly into the curve of Maya's shoulder, Carina reached over to gently stroke his hair. She couldn't help but smile as he let out a little sigh, nuzzling closer without waking. Maya cradled him tenderly, her other hand resting over Carina's, grounding her in the moment with a silent promise of support.

The tour guide began to speak, his warm voice drifting over the speakers as he pointed out landmarks along the water. "If you look to the left, you'll see Bainbridge Island," he announced, his voice soft yet enthusiastic. "A great spot for scenic views and small hikes—perfect for a family day trip."

Gabrielle leaned forward, her eyes bright with excitement as she took in the sights. "One day, we'll have to go there together," she whispered, glancing at Carina with a look of pure delight. "Imagine a hike with views like this!"

Carina nodded, her gaze focused on the island in the distance. "Yes," she murmured, her voice filled with newfound hope. "I'd love that." Her fingers tightened around Maya's hand, a silent acknowledgment of the peace she was beginning to feel. For the first time since the accident, the water didn't feel daunting or menacing. It felt freeing.

As the boat ventured further into the sound, they spotted a pair of harbor seals lounging on a rocky outcrop, soaking up the sun. Gabrielle pointed them out to Carina with a laugh. "Look! I think they're as relaxed as Alex right now."

Maya chuckled, shifting Alex slightly to get a better look. "Maybe when he wakes up, we can show him—he'd love it." She looked over at Carina, her eyes soft with pride. "This is pretty amazing, isn't it?"

Carina's eyes sparkled as she gazed out at the seals and the sunlit water. "It really is," she replied, her voice touched with wonder. "I can't believe I was afraid of this."

Maya squeezed her hand, a gentle, steady presence beside her. "You have every right to be, Carina. But look at you now. You're taking it back."

About halfway through the tour, Alex began to stir in Maya's lap, his little fingers curling and uncurling as he blinked awake. He looked around, momentarily confused by the soft sway of the boat and the endless expanse of water stretching out in every direction.

"Mamma? Mommy?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep as he rubbed his eyes.

Carina smiled, leaning over to gently ruffle his hair. "Hey, tesoro. We're on the boat. We're taking a tour of the sound."

Alex's eyes widened as he took in the view, a mixture of awe and excitement bubbling up as he realized where he was. "Oh! I thought I was dreaming," he whispered, looking from Carina to Maya, then out at the sparkling water. "Look at all the water! Are we going to see fishies here too?"

Maya chuckled, pulling him close. "Maybe," she replied, pointing out toward the water. "We've seen some seals already, and there might even be a few dolphins or orcas nearby if we're lucky."

Alex's face lit up with the thrill of possibility, and he quickly scrambled to sit up straighter, his gaze darting from one side of the boat to the other. "Seals? Where, Mamma?"

Carina pointed toward a rocky outcrop where a couple of seals still lounged in the sun. "Right over there, see? They're relaxing just like you were, sonno d'oro (sleepyhead)."

Gabrielle laughed softly, reaching over to ruffle Alex's hair. "I told Mamma you were a brave explorer today, and here you are—our official seal-spotter."

Alex beamed, his little chest puffing up with pride as he leaned into Carina. "I like being a seal-spotter. Do they know how to swim really fast, like superheroes?"

"Oh, absolutely," Maya replied, nodding seriously. "They're like the superheroes of the sea. Fast and strong, and they can hold their breath for a long time."

Alex's eyes went wide with admiration as he watched the seals from his spot. He snuggled closer to Carina, holding her hand tightly as he kept his gaze focused on the water, his curiosity bubbling over with questions. "Mamma, do they have any friends in the water?"

"They do, tesoro," Carina replied, her voice soft with affection as she looked at her son. "They have other seals and even sea lions, dolphins, and sometimes they get to swim with orcas too."

Gabrielle leaned in, pointing out a few birds flying low over the water. "And don't forget the birds, Alex. They're like the boat's little companions, flying alongside us as we explore."

Alex nodded, taking it all in with an expression of pure wonder. He settled back against Maya, his hand still clutching Carina's, looking perfectly content. For the rest of the tour, he was fully absorbed, watching every ripple and every hint of movement on the water, his excitement balanced by a calm curiosity.

As the tour boat glided past the enormous container ships docked along the harbor, Alex's eyes went wide, completely captivated by the sheer size of them. He pressed his little face against the railing, his mouth open in awe as he took in the towering stacks of brightly colored containers piled high, each one painted in vivid hues of red, blue, green, and yellow.

"Mamma! Mommy! Look at those big ships!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with excitement and wonder. "They're like… they're like giant Lego blocks!"

Carina laughed, brushing a hand over his hair. "They do look like Lego blocks, don't they, tesoro?" she agreed, smiling at the comparison. "Those containers hold all kinds of things—clothes, toys, food, everything you can imagine. They bring it all from different places around the world."

Alex's eyes sparkled as he absorbed the idea. "Like all the way from Italy?" he asked, glancing up at Carina with a curious look.

"Exactly," Carina replied, nodding. "Some of these ships travel halfway around the world, just like Zia Gabrielle did to come see us."

Gabrielle chuckled, nudging him gently. "And believe me, Alex, it's quite the journey! But not as comfortable as flying, so I think I'll stick to the airplane."

Maya grinned, joining in. "And just think, buddy—each one of those containers might be filled with treasures from different countries. It's like a giant treasure chest."

Alex's imagination took off, his face lighting up with excitement as he pictured each container hiding a different surprise. "Maybe there's one filled with superheroes," he mused aloud, his little hands gesturing dramatically. "Or… or a whole container just for turtles!"

The entire family laughed, sharing in his infectious excitement as the boat continued alongside the massive ships. Maya held him up a bit higher so he could get a better view, pointing out the workers on deck and the cranes towering above, loading and unloading the containers with ease.

"Those workers must be really strong," Alex observed, his tone filled with admiration. "I bet they're superheroes too."

Carina smiled, her heart swelling as she watched her son's imagination run wild. "They might not have capes, but they're certainly very important," she said. "They help make sure everyone has what they need, just like a team of superheroes."

As the boat moved on, leaving the massive container ships in the distance, Alex kept glancing back, clearly still fascinated by the sight. He looked up at Maya, his expression full of excitement and a bit of lingering awe.

"Mommy, do you think maybe one day we could go on one of those big ships?" he asked hopefully.

Maya and Carina exchanged a loving glance before Maya replied, "Maybe one day, buddy. For now, you're already on an adventure."

Alex nodded, satisfied, turning his gaze back to the water as he leaned contentedly into Carina's arms.

As the boat docked back at the pier and the tour came to an end, Alex reluctantly pulled his gaze from the water, still brimming with excitement from all he'd seen. Maya lifted him from his seat, and he wrapped his arms around her neck, his head resting on her shoulder.

Gabrielle stretched, letting out a contented sigh. "Seattle has outdone itself today," she remarked, a fond smile spreading across her face as she glanced at Carina and Maya.
