As the soft evening light filtered through the hospital windows, the atmosphere in the room grew quieter. Maya had been mentally preparing to take Alex home soon, giving Carina a chance to rest without interruptions and to allow Alex some familiarity back at home. But as she gently began to broach the subject, Alex, who had been snuggled against Carina all day, stiffened at the thought of leaving her.
"Hey, buddy," Maya said softly, brushing a hand over his hair. "It's getting late. How about we head home, get some rest, and come back to see Mamma tomorrow?"
Alex immediately frowned, his small face clouding over with anxiety. "No!" he cried, shaking his head as tears welled up in his eyes. "I don't want to leave Mamma!" His voice was desperate, his grip on Carina tightening as he clung to her arm, refusing to let go.
Carina, who had been resting peacefully, stirred as she felt Alex's grip tighten. She opened her eyes, her heart aching at the sight of her son's distress. "Tesoro," she said gently, her voice soft but firm, "it's okay. You'll see me tomorrow."
But Alex's fear and exhaustion, combined with the trauma of the accident and the overwhelming day, quickly spiraled into a full-blown tantrum. His small body trembled as he cried, clinging to Carina with all his might. "No, I don't want to go!" he sobbed, his voice filled with fear. "I want to stay with you, Mamma!"
Maya's heart clenched at the sight of him so distraught. She knelt beside the bed, her voice calm but filled with concern. "Hey, Alex," she said softly, "I know it's hard. I know you don't want to leave Mamma, but she needs to rest, and you need to rest too. We'll be back first thing tomorrow, I promise."
But Alex wasn't hearing any of it. He cried harder, his hands gripping Carina's gown as if letting go would mean losing her again. "Please, Mommy, don't make me go!" he begged through his tears, his little face red and blotchy from crying.
Carina, feeling the pain of both her injuries and her son's distress, did her best to soothe him. She gently ran her fingers through his hair, wincing slightly as her injured arm protested. "Amore," she whispered, "you're going to be okay. I need you to be brave, okay? Mommy will take good care of you tonight, and then you'll come back to me tomorrow."
But Alex wasn't calming down. His grip remained firm, his cries growing louder as the fear of separation overwhelmed him.
Maya, seeing that reasoning with him wasn't working, took a deep breath and gently but firmly pried his small hands from Carina's gown, scooping him up into her arms. Alex kicked and screamed, his little fists pounding against her shoulder as tears streamed down his face. It broke Maya's heart, but she knew he needed rest and some stability back at home.
"It's okay, Alex," Maya said softly, her voice soothing despite the struggle. "I've got you. I know you're scared, but I promise we'll be back with Mamma tomorrow."
Alex continued to cry, reaching out toward Carina as Maya held him securely. "Mamma!" he sobbed, his voice filled with desperation.
Carina, tears welling up in her own eyes at the sight of Alex's distress, reached out toward him with her good hand. "I love you, tesoro," she said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "You're going to be okay. I'll see you in the morning."
Maya held him tight, gently rocking him back and forth as she walked toward the door. "I know it's hard, buddy," she whispered. "But we'll get through this. We're all going to be okay."
Finally, as they reached the doorway, Alex's cries began to subside, exhaustion winning out over his tantrum. His little body went limp against Maya's shoulder, though soft hiccuping sobs still escaped him. Maya turned to look back at Carina, who offered a tired but reassuring smile through her own tears.
"Take care of him tonight," Carina whispered, her voice filled with love and gratitude. "And take care of yourself too."
Maya nodded, her heart aching but resolute. "I will," she promised softly. "We'll see you tomorrow."
With that, Maya carried a now-sleepy Alex out of the hospital room, her heart heavy but determined. She knew that this was hard for all of them, but she also knew that they would get through it—together. As she headed toward the car, she whispered soothing words to Alex, reminding him that tomorrow would be a new day, and they would be back with Mamma soon.
Tomorrow, she promised herself, things would be better.

After the hospital had quieted down and the soft hum of the machines around Carina became the only background noise, she found herself alone in her room. The day had been long and exhausting, both physically and emotionally, and as much as she missed Alex and Maya, she was grateful for a moment of calm to gather her thoughts.
She stared at the new phone that Maya had gotten for her, the screen still glowing with recent notifications. One of them caught her eye: a message from her mother, Lucia, who had been trying to reach her over the past couple of days. Carina had purposefully avoided calling her earlier because she didn't want to worry her mother until she was ready to talk. Now that she had the phone in her hands and a little more strength in her, Carina decided it was time.
She took a deep breath, hit the call button, and brought the phone to her ear. It didn't take long before Lucia picked up on the other end.
"Carina!" Lucia's familiar voice rang out, full of love and concern. "Finalmente! I've been so worried about you, why haven't you called sooner?"
Carina closed her eyes, her heart tightening at the sound of her mother's voice. "Mamma," she said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry I didn't call earlier. It's been… it's been a lot."
Lucia's voice immediately softened with concern. "What happened, Carina? Are you alright?"
Carina hesitated for a moment, unsure how to begin explaining the accident. She could already picture her mother's face, the worry etched into her features as she awaited an answer. "I was in a car accident, Mamma," Carina finally said, her voice quieter now. "It was bad, but I'm okay. I'm in the hospital right now."
Lucia gasped audibly on the other end of the line. "Oh, Carina! A car accident? Dio mio, are you hurt badly? Tell me everything."
Carina quickly rushed to reassure her mother. "I'm alright, Mamma, really," she said, her voice more steady now. "I have a broken arm, a head injury, and some bruises, but the doctors are taking good care of me. They say I should be able to go home soon."
There was a long pause on the other end, and Carina could almost hear her mother processing the information. "Thank God you're okay," Lucia finally whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I was so worried when I didn't hear from you. Why didn't you call sooner? I would have come right away."
Carina let out a soft sigh, tears pricking at her eyes. "I know, Mamma. I just… I didn't want to scare you before I knew everything would be alright. And my phone was lost in the accident, so I couldn't reach out right away."
Lucia's voice softened even more, full of understanding now. "Oh, tesoro, I'm just glad you're safe," she said. "And Alex? Was he with you? Is he alright?"
Carina felt her throat tighten at the mention of Alex. "Yes, Alex was with me," she admitted quietly. "He has a broken leg, but he's going to be okay. Maya's been taking such good care of him."
Lucia sighed, clearly relieved to hear that Alex was safe. "Thank goodness. Poor piccolo… He must have been so scared."
Carina wiped away a tear that had slipped down her cheek, her voice softening as she thought about her son's bravery. "He was scared, but he's been so strong through it all. And Maya—Maya's been incredible, Mamma. She's been with us every step of the way."
Lucia smiled on the other end of the line, her voice filled with affection. "Maya is a good woman, Carina," she said warmly. "You're very lucky to have her by your side. I'm glad Alex has her too."
Carina nodded, though her mother couldn't see it. "Yes," she said softly, her heart swelling with love for both Maya and Alex. "I'm very lucky."
There was a pause before Lucia spoke again, her tone filled with motherly affection. "Carina, do you want me to come? I can fly out and be there with you. I don't like the idea of you being in the hospital alone."
Carina's heart warmed at the offer, though she knew her mother would worry more than she would help. "Thank you, Mamma, but I'll be okay," she reassured her. "Maya and Alex will be with me once I'm discharged. You'll come visit once I'm better, okay?"
Lucia sighed, clearly still concerned, but she relented. "Alright, tesoro," she said softly. "But if you need me, you call, okay? I'll be on the next flight if you do."
Carina smiled, feeling grateful for her mother's unwavering support. "I promise, Mamma. I'll keep you updated."
They spoke for a little while longer, Lucia asking more questions about Carina's recovery and Alex's condition. By the time they said their goodbyes, Carina felt a weight lifted off her chest, knowing she had finally reassured her mother.

As Maya gently unbuckled Alex from his car seat, she could feel his small body stir, his eyes fluttering open. He blinked sleepily, his little face scrunching up as he slowly became aware of his surroundings. The events of the day must have still been on his mind because as soon as Alex realized they were home and away from Carina, his lower lip began to tremble.
"Mamma…" he whispered, his voice small and filled with sadness. "I want to sleep with Mamma…"
Maya's heart ached as she pulled him out of the car seat, holding him close to her chest. She kissed the top of his head as she carried him inside. "I know, buddy," she said softly, soothing him as she rubbed his back. "I miss her too, but she's resting at the hospital tonight, and we'll see her first thing in the morning."
Alex sniffled, wrapping his little arms tightly around Maya's neck. "Can I sleep in the big bed with you?" he asked, his voice still trembling with emotion.
Maya smiled softly, nodding. "Of course you can," she whispered. "We'll snuggle up together, and you'll feel better soon, okay?"
Once inside, Maya quickly helped Alex get ready for bed. She guided him through the motions of brushing his teeth and changing into his pajamas, though he was still a bit groggy and emotional. His attachment to Carina was strong, and Maya knew how much he missed her, especially after everything they had been through.
After getting him settled in his pajamas, Maya brought Alex to her room, and they both climbed into the big bed. Alex immediately snuggled up close to her, his small body seeking comfort in her warmth. Maya wrapped her arm around him protectively, pulling the blankets over them.
But even with the comfort of being in the big bed, Alex still seemed unsettled. His thumb was in his mouth, and his eyes remained wide open, reflecting the lingering fear and worry from the day.
Maya, wanting to ease his mind, suddenly had an idea. She picked up her phone from the nightstand and opened FaceTime. "How about we call Mamma?" she asked softly. "Would you like to see her before we go to sleep?"
Alex's eyes lit up at the suggestion, nodding eagerly. "Yes, please!" he said, his voice brightening with a hint of hope.
Maya smiled and quickly found Carina's contact, tapping the FaceTime button. The phone rang for a few moments, and then, to Alex's delight, Carina's face appeared on the screen, her warm smile filling the room.
"Ciao, tesoro," Carina greeted, her voice gentle and loving. "How are you, my sweet boy?"
"Mamma!" Alex exclaimed, his face lighting up as he snuggled closer to Maya, holding the phone as if it were a lifeline. "I miss you so much. Can you come home?"
Carina's expression softened, her eyes filled with love as she looked at him through the screen. "I miss you too, amore," she said tenderly. "But I'll be home soon. Just one more night in the hospital, and then we'll all be together again."
Alex sniffled again but smiled through his tears. "Okay," he whispered. "Mommy and I are going to sleep in the big bed tonight. I wish you were here too."
Carina's smile grew, her heart swelling with affection for both her son and Maya. "That sounds like a good plan, tesoro," she said softly. "And tomorrow, I'll be there with you both."
Maya watched the interaction, her own heart warming at the sight of Alex slowly calming down. She shifted the phone so that Carina could see both of them. "We're just about to go to sleep," Maya said quietly. "I thought seeing you would help him settle."
Carina nodded, her voice filled with gratitude. "Thank you, amore," she whispered. "It means a lot. I wish I could be there with you two."
Maya smiled softly. "You'll be back with us tomorrow," she reassured her. "We'll all be together again soon."
Carina's eyes glistened with emotion as she looked at Maya and Alex. "I love you both so much," she said softly.
Alex smiled sleepily, his eyes drooping now that the comfort of seeing Carina had calmed him down. "I love you too, Mamma," he murmured, his voice growing quieter as sleep began to claim him.
Maya kissed the top of Alex's head and smiled at Carina. "We love you," she whispered. "Rest well, okay? We'll see you tomorrow."
Carina nodded, her expression filled with love and warmth. "Goodnight, amore mio," she said softly. "Goodnight, Alex."
"Goodnight, Mamma," Alex mumbled, his eyes now fully closed as he drifted off to sleep, the FaceTime call having brought him the comfort he needed.
Maya ended the call gently, placing the phone back on the nightstand. She lay back beside Alex, wrapping her arm around him once more. As Alex's breathing evened out, Maya smiled, her heart full of love for her little family.
In the quiet stillness of the night, Maya was jolted awake by the soft sound of Alex crying beside her. Groggy at first, she blinked her eyes open, immediately realizing that something was wrong. The dampness of the bed registered quickly, and she felt Alex shifting uncomfortably next to her, his small body trembling with tears.
"Mommy..." Alex whimpered, his voice filled with embarrassment and distress. "I-I wet the bed..."
Maya's heart sank as she fully woke up, instantly wrapping her arms around Alex to soothe him. "Hey, hey, it's okay, buddy," she whispered softly, rubbing his back in slow, comforting circles. "It happens, don't worry."
Alex continued to cry softly, burying his face into Maya's shoulder as his small body shook with emotion. "I'm sorry, Mommy," he sobbed, his voice muffled by her shirt. "I didn't mean to."
Maya gently kissed the top of his head, her voice filled with reassurance. "You don't have to be sorry, Alex," she whispered. "It's not your fault. These things happen, especially after such a long and emotional day."
She shifted slightly to sit up, still holding Alex close as she comforted him. She could feel his small body trembling less now as her calming words soothed him, but she knew she had to get both him and the bed cleaned up. It was then that it hit her—she'd forgotten to put a pull-up on him before bed, something she usually did when he was extra tired or emotionally overwhelmed. The realization filled her with a small pang of guilt, but she quickly pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand.
"Alright, buddy," Maya said softly, brushing his hair back from his tear-streaked face. "Let's get you cleaned up, okay? We'll change the sheets, and everything will be fresh again."
Alex sniffled, wiping his eyes as he looked up at Maya. "Okay," he whispered, still sounding unsure but comforted by her presence.
Maya gently lifted him out of bed, carrying him to the bathroom to clean him up. She gave him a quick, reassuring smile as she helped him out of his wet pajamas, wiping him down with a warm washcloth before helping him into a fresh pair of pajamas. Once Alex was dressed again, she kissed his forehead, her heart full of tenderness.
"You're doing great," she whispered, her voice full of warmth. "Let's go fix the bed, okay?"
Together, they returned to the bedroom, and Maya quickly stripped the bed of the wet sheets, throwing them into the laundry basket. She grabbed fresh sheets from the closet, laying them out carefully while Alex sat nearby, now much calmer. Maya couldn't help but think that this was the type of crash course in parenting she had never fully prepared for—navigating the messes, the tears, the unexpected moments that came with caring for a child so deeply.
Once the bed was made, Maya helped Alex climb back in. She sat beside him, her fingers gently brushing his hair out of his face. He still looked a bit sad, his eyes lingering with the remnants of his earlier tears.
"Hey," Maya said softly, her voice soothing. "You're okay, Alex. I promise. I'm not upset, and I'm really proud of you for helping me get everything fixed."
Alex sniffled once more, then offered a small smile. "Thanks, Mommy," he whispered. "I didn't mean to..."
Maya shook her head, her voice firm but loving. "I know, bud. And I don't want you to worry about it anymore. We've got clean sheets, you're all freshened up, and everything is okay now."
Alex nodded, his small smile growing a little bit wider. "Okay," he said softly, finally settling down again.
Maya snuggled up beside him, pulling the blanket over them both. She gently rubbed his back as he began to relax, his eyelids growing heavier with each passing moment. Despite the chaos of the night, Maya couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of love for Alex. This was parenting, she realized—messy, unpredictable, and full of moments where love had to fill in the gaps left by mistakes or oversights.
As Alex finally drifted off to sleep, Maya stayed awake for a little longer, thinking about how much she had learned in these past months with him and Carina. Being a mom didn't come with a manual, but in these moments, she knew she was doing the best she could—and that was enough.
With that comforting thought, Maya finally closed her eyes, her arms wrapped protectively around Alex as they both drifted back into a peaceful sleep.
— — —
The next morning, Maya was startled awake by a small hand shaking her shoulder. Groggy and blinking against the early morning light filtering through the curtains, she opened her eyes to see Alex sitting beside her in the bed, wide-eyed and filled with energy.
"Mommy! Mommy!" he whispered urgently, his excitement barely contained. "Can we go see Mamma now? Please?"
Maya smiled sleepily, still feeling the weight of the previous night's interrupted sleep. She glanced over at the clock on the nightstand—6:00 AM. It was early, but the eager look on Alex's face made her chuckle despite her fatigue.
"Good morning, buddy," she said with a yawn, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. "You're up bright and early today."
Alex nodded enthusiastically, his eyes shining with excitement. "I want to go see Mamma!" he repeated, bouncing on the bed. "I miss her."
Maya's heart softened at the sight of his enthusiasm. She leaned over and pulled him into a hug, kissing the top of his head. "I know you do, bud," she said gently. "We'll go see her soon, I promise. But it's still really early. How about we get some breakfast first?"
Alex's excitement didn't diminish. He grinned at Maya, his little face full of hope. "Can we eat really fast? I want to see Mamma!"
Maya chuckled, shaking her head at his persistence. "Okay, okay," she said, smiling as she got out of bed. "Let's get you some breakfast, and then we'll head to the hospital to see Mamma. Sound good?"
Alex nodded eagerly, already crawling toward his room.
As they went through the morning routine, Alex's excitement only grew. He asked questions non-stop—about how Carina was feeling, when she would come home, and if they could bring her flowers again. Maya patiently answered every question, all while thinking of how lucky she was to have this little guy who was so full of love for his family.
Maya quickly dressed in comfortable clothes and helped Alex into some fresh clothes for the day, her heart warming at his eagerness to see Carina. She felt the same way—she missed Carina and couldn't wait to be with her again, too.
Once they were both ready, Maya made a quick breakfast of cereal and toast, though Alex barely touched his food in his rush to get to the hospital. Maya laughed softly, coaxing him to eat just enough to keep him from getting hungry too soon.
Finally, after breakfast and a few more "Are we going yet?" questions from Alex, they packed up and headed out the door. Maya couldn't help but smile at how Alex bounced on her hip, his excitement contagious. She could feel the same anticipation building within her—the desire to hold Carina and reassure her that they were okay, that their family was still strong and intact after everything.
As Maya buckled Alex into his car seat he called out "We're coming, Mamma!" he shouted with joy, and Maya couldn't help but laugh.
As they drove to the hospital, Alex was full of chatter, excitedly telling Maya all the things he planned to tell Carina when they got there. He talked about how he slept in the big bed with Maya, how he was gonna play tee ball when his leg healed, and how much he missed Carina.
As Maya parked the car outside the hospital, she turned to look at Alex, who was already bouncing with excitement despite the cast on his leg. His face lit up even more as they got closer to seeing Carina, and it was clear he could hardly wait another second. Knowing he couldn't walk comfortably with the cast, Maya got out of the car, walked around to his side, and carefully lifted him out of his seat.
"Up we go, buddy," she said softly, adjusting his weight in her arms. Alex wrapped his arms around her neck, holding on tightly as Maya carried him toward the hospital entrance.
"Mamma's going to be so happy to see you," Maya said, smiling down at Alex as they made their way through the hospital's automatic doors. "And I'm sure she's been missing you just as much."
Alex's eyes widened with excitement, his small hands gripping onto Maya's shirt as they stepped into the familiar lobby. "I miss Mamma too," he said eagerly.
As they headed toward the elevator, a few nurses passing by smiled at them, clearly recognizing Alex and Maya from their previous visits. One of the nurses gave Alex a wave, to which he shyly smiled back. It seemed like everyone around the hospital had noticed how dedicated Maya had been in making sure Alex was okay while Carina recovered.
Once in the elevator, Maya shifted Alex slightly to press the button for the correct floor. Alex, ever the bundle of energy, looked up at her and asked, "Is Mamma feeling better now? Can she come home today?"
Maya smiled, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "She's doing much better," she said softly. "But we'll have to ask the doctors if she's ready to come home just yet. We'll know more after we talk to Mamma, okay?"
Alex nodded, seeming satisfied with that answer for now. The elevator dinged, signaling they had arrived on Carina's floor. As soon as the doors opened, Alex squirmed excitedly in Maya's arms, eager to get to his mom. Maya couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm.
"Alright, let's go see Mamma," Maya said with a grin, stepping out of the elevator and heading down the hall toward Carina's room.
As soon as they stepped into the hospital room, Alex's eyes lit up,"Mamma!" he exclaimed, reaching out for Carina with a huge smile on his face.
Carina's face immediately brightened at the sight of him. "Ciao, tesoro!" she called out, her voice warm and filled with love. She sat up a bit straighter in her hospital bed, her arms outstretched as Maya carried Alex over to her.
Maya gently set Alex down on the edge of the bed, careful of his cast, and he wasted no time crawling closer to Carina, his small arms wrapping around her in a tight hug. "I missed you, Mamma," he said, his voice muffled as he snuggled into her side.
Carina's smile softened, and she kissed the top of his head, holding him close with her good arm. "I missed you too, amore," she whispered, her eyes full of emotion. "I'm so happy you're here."
Maya watched the two of them with a soft smile, her heart swelling at the sight of Alex cuddling so comfortably with Carina. She stepped closer to the bed and leaned against the railing, her eyes meeting Carina's.
"How are you feeling?" Maya asked, her voice gentle but filled with concern.
Carina sighed softly, glancing down at her cast before looking back at Maya. "Better," she said honestly. "They've been managing the pain well, and my head feels much clearer today. The doctor came in earlier and said I'll probably be able to go home later this evening, as long as everything continues to improve."
Maya let out a small breath of relief, grateful to hear that Carina was on the mend. "That's great news," she said softly. "We've missed you at home."
Carina smiled, her eyes full of love as she looked at Maya. "I've missed you both too," she said softly. "I'm ready to get out of this hospital and be with my family again."
Maya nodded, feeling the same sense of relief wash over her. "We're ready for you to come home too," she said with a smile. "I've been taking good care of Alex, but I'm pretty sure he's been counting down the minutes until you're home."
Alex looked up at Carina with big eyes. "Mamma, when you come home, can we have a sleepover in the big bed?" he asked eagerly.
Carina chuckled softly, hugging him a little tighter. "We'll see, tesoro," she said gently.
As Alex snuggled closer to Carina, he looked up at her with a proud grin on his face. "Mamma, guess what?" he began, his excitement bubbling up again. "I got to sleep in the big bed with Mommy last night!"
Carina's eyebrows raised in amusement as she looked over at Maya, a knowing smile tugging at her lips. "Oh, did you now?" she asked, her tone playful as she turned her attention back to Alex. "That sounds like quite the adventure!"
Alex nodded eagerly, his little face lighting up. "Yeah! We snuggled up really tight, and it was so comfy," he said, his voice full of enthusiasm. "But… I had a little accident, and Mommy had to help clean everything up."
Maya laughed softly from where she stood by the bed, shaking her head. "We had a bit of a nighttime mishap," she explained with a fond smile. "But it wasn't a big deal. Alex was really brave, and we got everything cleaned up in no time."
Carina smiled tenderly at her son, brushing his hair back with her good hand. "I'm sure Mommy took very good care of you," she said, her voice full of warmth. "And accidents happen, tesoro. There's nothing to be embarrassed about."
Alex nodded, though a small blush crept up his cheeks. "Mommy said it was okay," he said softly, his eyes flicking over to Maya with gratitude.
Maya stepped closer to the bed and leaned down to give Alex a quick kiss on the forehead. "It was more than okay, buddy," she said reassuringly. "We had a fun little sleepover, didn't we?"
Alex beamed up at her, nodding. "Yeah! But… I still miss Mamma in the big bed," he added, glancing back at Carina with a hopeful look in his eyes.
Carina chuckled softly, her heart swelling at the way Alex's love for both her and Maya shone through in every word. "I miss sleeping in the big bed with you too, amore," she said, her voice gentle. "But soon, when I get home, we'll all be back together."
Alex's face lit up even more, clearly excited by the prospect. "I can't wait, Mamma!" he exclaimed. "Then we can all snuggle!"
Maya smiled as she watched the interaction, her heart warmed by the love they shared. "I think a family snuggle session is definitely in order once you're home," she said, meeting Carina's eyes with a soft smile.
Carina nodded, her gaze full of affection as she looked at both Alex and Maya. "I'm looking forward to that," she said softly, her eyes shimmering with emotion.
As Alex continued to snuggle beside Carina, his little fingers began to wander. He fidgeted with the edge of the blanket, and soon his curiosity got the better of him as he noticed Carina's IV line and the medical equipment around the bed. Without thinking, his small hands started to reach for the tubes, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"What's this for, Mamma?" Alex asked, tugging gently at the IV.
Carina chuckled softly, placing her hand over his to stop him from pulling too hard. "That's helping me get better, tesoro," she explained patiently. "But you have to be really careful, okay? It's not something you can play with."
Maya, noticing how fidgety Alex was becoming, quickly stepped in. "Hey, buddy, I know it's a little boring in here, but we need to be really careful around Mamma's things," she said gently, reaching into her backpack. "How about I set you up with something fun to watch for a bit?"
Alex looked up at Maya, his curiosity still lingering, but he nodded. "Okay," he said, reluctantly pulling his hands away from the medical equipment.
Maya smiled, pulling the iPad out of her backpack. She knew how hard it was for Alex to sit still, especially in a hospital room with so many unfamiliar things around. She powered on the iPad and quickly pulled up a new movie, Zootopia, knowing it would help keep him entertained and distracted.
"Here you go," Maya said, placing the iPad gently in his lap. "Why don't you watch this for a little while? It'll help pass the time until we go get some lunch."
Alex's face lit up as he saw the characters. "Yay! Animals!" he exclaimed, settling back against the pillows next to Carina.
Carina smiled warmly at the sight of Alex calming down, leaning into the bed with his iPad. "Good idea," she said softly to Maya, grateful for the distraction. "You always know how to keep him entertained."
Maya chuckled, stepping over to sit on the edge of the bed. "I've learned a few tricks," she said with a grin, watching as Alex became engrossed in the show. She then turned to Carina, gently taking her hand. "And now you can relax too."
Alex settled in with his iPad, his focus completely on the animated heroes on the screen, Maya shifted her attention back to Carina. She gently stroked Carina's hand and leaned in closer, her voice quieter and more serious now.
"I got a text from Travis earlier," Maya began, her tone soft but tinged with concern. "He said the ferry crash is still under investigation, but… it looks like the captain may have fallen asleep at the wheel."
Carina's eyes widened slightly, a mixture of shock and disbelief crossing her face. "Fallen asleep?" she echoed, her voice thick with surprise. She shifted uncomfortably in the bed, her mind clearly racing as she processed what Maya had just told her.
Maya nodded, squeezing Carina's hand reassuringly. "Yeah, it seems like that's where the investigation is headed. Travis didn't have a lot of details yet, but they're thinking the captain might've been exhausted and just… fell asleep."
Carina shook her head slowly, her expression a mix of frustration and sadness. "Dio mio," she whispered, her thoughts immediately going to how close they had come to being part of a much worse tragedy. "That's unbelievable… So many lives were affected, so much damage…"
Maya sighed, her own emotions surfacing as she thought about the chaos of the accident and how Alex and Carina had been right there, caught in the middle of it all. "Yeah, it's terrifying to think about. So many people got hurt… and for something that could've been avoided if the captain had been more careful or well-rested."
Carina looked over at Alex, who was still engrossed in his show, blissfully unaware of the conversation. She exhaled softly, her protective instincts flaring up again as she thought about how vulnerable they had been on that bridge. "We were so lucky," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "If things had gone differently…"
Maya quickly cut her off, not wanting her to spiral into those what-ifs. "But they didn't," she said firmly, her hand still holding Carina's. "You and Alex are okay, and that's what matters. We're safe."
Carina nodded, though her heart still felt heavy with the knowledge of how close they had been to disaster. She looked up at Maya, her eyes full of gratitude. "I'm so glad you found us when you did," she whispered. "I don't know what I would've done if—"
Maya gently pressed a finger to Carina's lips, shaking her head. "Hey, don't go there," she said softly. "I found you, and we're all here now. That's what's important. We can't change what happened, but we can move forward."
Carina nodded again, leaning into Maya's comforting presence. "You're right," she said softly, though her eyes still held a flicker of worry. "But I can't help thinking about how close it was…"
Maya understood. She had the same thoughts, the same nightmares. But right now, all she wanted to do was focus on the fact that they were together, that they had survived something terrifying and come out on the other side. "We're going to be okay," she promised, leaning in to press a kiss to Carina's forehead. "All of us."
A few minutes after Maya and Carina's conversation, the door to the hospital room opened gently, and in walked Dr. Amelia Shepherd. Her familiar smile immediately lit up the room, though her eyes were full of concern as she approached Carina's bed.
"Hey, how's my favorite OB?" Amelia greeted warmly, glancing between Carina and Maya. Her tone was light, but the concern in her gaze made it clear she was here to check on more than just her friend's well-being.
Carina smiled at the sight of Amelia, though the fatigue was still clear on her face. "Hi, Amelia," she replied softly. "I'm… getting there. Slowly but surely."
Amelia nodded, stepping closer to the bed and giving Carina's hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm glad to hear that. You had us all pretty worried."
Maya, standing by the bed, gave Amelia a small smile in acknowledgment. "She's doing better today. We're hoping she can come this evening."
Amelia's smile widened. "That's great news," she said, then glanced at Carina more seriously. "How's your head? Any lingering dizziness, headaches?"
Carina sighed, shifting slightly. "A little bit of dizziness when I move too fast, but it's getting better," she admitted. "They're keeping an eye on it."
Amelia nodded, her professional side kicking in. "Good. Keep monitoring that closely, okay? Head injuries can be tricky."
Before Carina could respond, the door opened again, and Link, the orthopedic surgeon, entered the room with his usual relaxed demeanor. He gave a quick nod of acknowledgement to Amelia before turning his attention to Carina and Maya.
"Hey there," Link greeted with a smile, his eyes briefly landing on Alex, who was still immersed in his movie on the iPad. "How's our little guy doing?" he asked, nodding toward Alex's cast.
Maya turned to Link, offering a smile in return. "He's doing okay. A bit restless, but handling it like a champ."
Link chuckled. "That's good to hear. Kids are usually pretty resilient with these things," he said. Then, looking at Carina, he added, "And how are you feeling? That arm giving you any trouble?"
Carina glanced down at the cast on her arm and gave a small nod. "It's sore," she admitted, wincing slightly. "But I'm managing."
Link stepped closer to take a look at her arm, gently checking the cast. "That's expected, but if the pain gets worse or if you feel any tingling, make sure to let me know," he said, his tone friendly but firm. "You'll need to take it easy for a while—no heavy lifting."
Amelia smirked at that, shooting a glance at Maya. "Better make sure she listens to that," she teased. "You know how stubborn she can be."
Maya laughed softly. "Don't worry, I'll keep her in line," she said, winking at Carina, who rolled her eyes playfully.
Link smiled at the exchange and nodded, satisfied with his check-up on Carina. "Well, you seem to be healing up well, I just wanted to stop by before your discharge," he said, looking at both Carina and Maya. "And don't worry about Alex's cast—we'll check it again in a few days."
"Thank you, Link," Carina said sincerely, her voice soft but full of gratitude.
"Yeah, thanks, Doc," Maya added with a smile.
Link nodded, giving them a final wave before he headed for the door. Amelia, however, lingered for a moment longer.
"Well, I'll leave you two alone to rest," Amelia said, glancing between them. "But if you need anything, you know where to find me."
Carina smiled, grateful for the support of her friends. "Thank you, Amelia. For everything."
Amelia returned the smile, then gave a little wave as she headed toward the door. "Take care of yourselves, okay?" she called over her shoulder before disappearing down the hall.
As the nurses entered the room, carrying clipboards and discharge papers, Carina's calm expression started to falter. They began going over a seemingly endless list of things she would need to do before she could go home: follow-up appointments, medication refills, physical therapy for her arm, and a care plan to manage her head injury. The sheer amount of information was overwhelming, and Carina's brow furrowed as she tried to keep up.
"We'll need you to schedule a follow-up with your primary physician within the next week, and your orthopedic check-up will need to be two weeks from now," one of the nurses explained. "And here's a list of medications you'll need to pick up from the pharmacy. Some of them require prior authorization, so make sure to stay on top of that."
Carina glanced at the paperwork, her head spinning. She shifted uncomfortably in the bed, trying to absorb it all, but her mind was still fuzzy from the accident. "Okay… I think I got that," she said, her voice uncertain.
Maya, noticing the rising stress in Carina's expression, immediately stepped in. She placed a reassuring hand on Carina's arm and reached for her phone. "Hey, don't worry about this," Maya said softly, her voice steady and calm. "I've got it."
Carina looked at her, a mix of relief and love filling her eyes. "Are you sure?"
Maya smiled, already tapping away on her phone. "Absolutely," she replied confidently. "I've already got Alex's appointments and follow-ups handled, and now I'll take care of yours. You just focus on getting better." She began taking notes on her phone, organizing all the discharge instructions, appointments, and medication reminders with ease.
The nurses, sensing Maya's take-charge attitude, handed her the paperwork and patiently explained the details. Maya asked questions where needed, writing down everything and adding reminders into her calendar. Carina watched her in awe, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. It was in moments like these—when Maya stepped in and handled the logistics without hesitation—that Carina felt such deep gratitude for having her in her life.
As Maya finished up with the nurses, she glanced over at Carina and gave her a wink. "Okay, you're officially scheduled and organized. I'll handle your appointments, meds, and everything else. You just rest."
Carina couldn't help but smile, her earlier anxiety melting away. "You're amazing," she whispered, her voice filled with admiration. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Maya grinned and leaned in to press a soft kiss on Carina's forehead. "Lucky for you, you don't have to find out," she teased gently. "I've got your back—always."
Carina sighed, feeling the tension in her body ease as she allowed herself to relax into the comfort of Maya's support. She loved when Maya took charge like this, knowing she could trust her completely. Maya's calm, organized approach was exactly what she needed in moments like these, and it made her heart swell with love.
Just as Carina was getting ready to be discharged, the door to her hospital room swung open, and in walked Dr. Miranda Bailey. Her no-nonsense demeanor was softened by a small, warm smile as she approached the bed.
"Well, well, look at you," Bailey said, giving Carina a once-over. "I hear you're finally getting out of here today. About time."
Carina returned the smile, her gratitude evident as she sat on the edge of the bed, ready to leave. "Yes, finally," she said with a sigh of relief. "I'm more than ready to go home."
Bailey nodded, glancing at Maya, who was in the process of gathering Alex's things and preparing for their exit. "Good to see you too, Maya," she said, her eyes flicking toward Alex, who was trying to wiggle out of bed with his cast. "And how's my favorite little patient doing?" Bailey added with a softer tone, smiling at Alex.
Alex grinned up at her, his iPad now tucked under his arm as Maya hoisted him up. "I'm good, Dr. Bailey! My leg is almost better."
Bailey chuckled, giving him a pat on the head. "You're tougher than most adults I know," she said, amused. Then her gaze returned to Carina. "You take it easy when you get home, alright? No playing doctor at home, no overdoing it."
Carina smirked, shaking her head. "I promise, I'll be resting. I have my own personal doctor here," she teased, motioning toward Maya, who grinned.
"I'll make sure she behaves," Maya said playfully, adjusting Alex in her arms. "Between me and Alex, we've got her covered."
Bailey raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. "Good," she said. "Because I'll hear about it if you don't." Her tone was teasing but filled with warmth, her care for Carina evident. "And remember, if you need anything, you call me. Got it?"
Carina nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Miranda. For everything."
Bailey gave her a final smile and stepped back as the nurse rolled the wheelchair into the room. It was time for Carina to leave. "Alright, no more hanging around here. Go home and rest."
Maya gave Bailey a nod of appreciation, then turned to Carina. "Ready to get out of here?"
Carina smiled, her heart light as she nodded. "Definitely ready."
With that, Maya carefully balanced Alex in her arms and started leading the way toward the door. The nurse helped Carina into the wheelchair, and Bailey gave a final wave as they exited the room.
They made their way down the hospital hall, Maya carrying Alex while the nurse wheeled Carina. Alex, still full of energy despite his cast, rested his head on Maya's shoulder, occasionally glancing over to Carina with a sleepy but content smile.
Once outside, the fresh air was a welcome relief. Maya gently placed Alex in his booster seat in the back of the car, buckling him in with care. "There you go, buddy," she said softly, brushing a hand over his hair.
Alex smiled up at her, though his eyes were starting to droop with exhaustion. "Thanks, Mommy," he whispered, leaning back into the seat.
Maya's heart warmed at the sound of him calling her Mommy again, but she quickly turned her attention to Carina as the nurse helped her into the front passenger seat.
"Thank you," Carina said, settling into the seat as the nurse handed her a small clipboard with the final discharge paperwork to sign. Maya watched her, standing by the car door, making sure everything was handled before they left.
Once the nurse gave a final nod, the discharge process completed, Maya climbed into the driver's seat, glancing over at Carina. "Alright, let's get you home," she said softly, reaching over to give Carina's hand a gentle squeeze.
Carina smiled, her heart full of gratitude and love. "Home sounds perfect," she said, glancing back at Alex, who was already starting to doze off in the backseat. "I can't wait to be with both of you."
And with that, they drove off, ready to finally put the chaos behind them and focus on healing—together.
