As Maya pulled the car into the driveway of their home, the weight of the last few days seemed to lift slightly. The journey from the hospital felt long, but now, finally, they were home. She glanced over at Carina, who was leaning back in the passenger seat, her face tired but filled with relief. In the backseat, Alex had fallen fast asleep, his little head leaning to one side, mouth slightly open, completely wiped out after the long day.

Maya shifted the car into park and turned to Carina. "Let's get you inside first," she said gently, her eyes filled with care.

Carina nodded, giving her a soft smile. "Thank you," she murmured, reaching for Maya's hand for support as they both stepped out of the car.

Maya quickly moved to Carina's side, wrapping her arm around her waist to help her walk to the front door. Though Carina was doing better, Maya knew she still needed to take it easy—especially after the head injury and with her arm in a cast.

As they reached the front door, Maya helped Carina up the few steps, steadying her until they were inside. The moment they stepped into the living room, Carina stopped, turning to Maya with a look in her eyes that made Maya's breath catch. Without hesitation, Carina leaned in, pressing her lips to Maya's in a soft but deep kiss, her good hand cupping the side of Maya's face.

Maya's heart swelled, surprised by the intensity of the moment. She kissed Carina back gently, holding her close for a brief moment before pulling back slightly to look at her. "You sure you don't want to rest first?" Maya teased softly, her voice full of warmth.

Carina chuckled, brushing her thumb gently over Maya's cheek. "I've been waiting days for that kiss," she whispered, her voice filled with affection. "I just couldn't wait any longer."

Maya smiled, feeling her heart flutter as she leaned in to steal one more quick kiss before gently pulling away. "I've missed that too," she murmured, her fingers lingering on Carina's hand. "But now, I have to get our little man."

Carina nodded, giving her a tired but content smile. "I'll be right here waiting for you both," she said softly, sinking down onto the couch to rest.

Maya gave her a loving look before heading back out to the car. As she opened the back door, she couldn't help but smile at the sight of Alex, still fast asleep in his car seat, completely unaware of the world around him. Gently, she unbuckled him, careful not to wake him as she lifted him into her arms. His small body curled up against her instinctively, his head resting on her shoulder.

With Alex securely in her arms, Maya made her way back into the house, her heart full as she carried him through the front door. She looked over at Carina, who was watching them with a soft smile from the couch.

"All set," Maya whispered, walking over to lay Alex down on the couch beside Carina for a moment. He stirred slightly but quickly snuggled into the cushions, still deeply asleep.

Maya turned to Carina and smiled. "Looks like we've got a quiet night ahead."

As the peaceful quiet of the house settled around them, Maya leaned into Carina for a moment longer, enjoying the closeness. But she knew there were still a few things to take care of, especially after the long day they'd had.

"I should probably run those errands," Maya whispered softly, not wanting to disturb the calmness of the moment.

Carina, still resting her head against Maya's shoulder, gave a small nod. "Yes, go ahead," she said quietly, though there was a hint of reluctance in her voice. "But hurry back." Her smile was gentle, understanding that Maya needed to take care of things, even though she would miss her.

Maya smiled, giving Carina a quick kiss on the top of her head. "I won't be gone long. I'll pick up your medications and grab something for dinner," she said reassuringly, standing up from the couch.

As she slipped on her shoes and grabbed her keys, Maya glanced back at Alex, still sound asleep on the couch beside Carina. The sight of them together filled her with warmth.

When Maya walked back into the living room after putting away the groceries and medications, she found Carina and Alex both fast asleep on the sofa. Alex had curled up next to Carina, his tiny body tucked against hers, and Carina's arm was draped protectively over him despite the cast. The sight filled Maya with warmth; they looked so peaceful and content, as if all the chaos of the past few days had finally settled into a quiet calm.

Maya moved quietly around the kitchen, careful not to wake them as she unpacked the groceries and put Carina's medications in the cabinet. She smiled to herself as she thought about how much their lives had changed—how she had gone from being so fiercely independent to now feeling utterly content being wrapped up in this little family.

Just as she was placing the last item in the fridge, she heard a soft sound from the living room. She glanced over and saw Carina beginning to stir, her eyelids fluttering open as she shifted on the couch. Maya stepped over quietly, her presence calming and reassuring.

Carina blinked a few times, adjusting to the light and her surroundings before her eyes landed on Maya. A soft smile spread across her lips. "Hey," she whispered, her voice still groggy with sleep. "You're back."

Maya smiled and sat down gently on the edge of the couch beside her. "Yeah, I didn't want to wake you two," she said softly, brushing a strand of hair out of Carina's face. "You both looked so peaceful."

Carina glanced down at Alex, still asleep beside her, his little hand clutching onto her shirt. Her expression softened, full of love and tenderness as she looked back at Maya. "He was so tired," she whispered. "I must've fallen asleep with him."

Maya leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Carina's forehead. "You needed the rest too," she murmured, her hand gently stroking Carina's hair. "I've got your meds and dinner ready whenever you're up for it."

Carina smiled gratefully, her heart full. "You're amazing," she whispered, her eyes full of love as she gazed up at Maya. "Thank you for everything."

Maya chuckled softly, her fingers brushing Carina's cheek. "I'm just doing what I can," she said with a wink. "But seeing you two like this… that's all I need."

Carina reached up and gently took Maya's hand, squeezing it softly. "I don't know how I got so lucky," she whispered, her eyes shining with emotion. "You make everything better."

The next few days were a peaceful blur for Maya, Carina, and Alex. The chaos and fear from the accident slowly faded as they embraced the quiet moments of healing and being together. The rhythm of their days shifted to something simpler, more comforting—filled with slow mornings, gentle laughter, and time spent simply enjoying each other's company.

Maya had taken time off work, determined to be there for both Carina and Alex as they healed. Each morning, Maya would wake up early and bring coffee to Carina in bed, gently checking in on how she was feeling before heading to Alex's room to wake him up. Alex, still sporting his cast, had taken full advantage of his extra time with both of them, savoring the fact that he didn't have to go to preschool just yet.

They spent their mornings cuddled on the couch, watching Alex's favorite cartoons, or playing with his toys. Sometimes, Maya would set up a makeshift T-ball game in the living room for Alex to swing at the ball despite his leg, filling the apartment with the sound of his giggles and their lighthearted banter.

Carina, though still recovering, found immense comfort in these simple moments. Her days had been filled with Maya's love and support, making it easier for her to rest and heal. Whenever she felt overwhelmed or tired, Maya was there, offering her strength, reminding her that she didn't have to do it alone.

In the afternoons, they took slow walks around the neighborhood with Alex in his stroller or nestled in Maya's arms, soaking in the fresh air. Maya always made sure they went at a pace that Carina was comfortable with, keeping an eye on her, even though Carina would playfully roll her eyes at Maya's constant concern.

"Amore, I'm not that fragile," Carina would tease with a gentle smile as Maya fussed over her.

Maya would grin back, kissing her forehead. "I know," she'd say, her voice soft but filled with love. "But I still want to take care of you."

Evenings were quiet, spent around the dining table where Maya would cook simple but hearty meals. Alex, still full of energy, would chatter nonstop, filling the room with his stories about T-ball or his imaginary adventures with dinosaurs and fire trucks. Maya and Carina would share soft smiles across the table, content with the simplicity of it all.

After Alex's bedtime routine, which Maya had now become an expert at, the two of them would collapse into bed together, enjoying the silence and comfort of each other's presence. Carina would often rest her head on Maya's chest, her arm draped across her, while Maya gently stroked her hair, their bodies entwined in peaceful stillness.

A few days later, it was time for both Carina and Alex to head back to Grey Sloan Memorial for their follow-up appointments with Dr. Link.

Carina was still recovering, though much stronger now, and Alex was adjusting to life with his cast, though he had been a trooper throughout it all. Maya had promised them both that they would get through the hospital visit together, and as usual, she had taken charge of managing all the details.

"Ready to head out?" Maya asked, smiling at Carina as she helped her with her jacket.

Carina nodded, her eyes soft with gratitude. "Sì, amore, thank you for getting everything together." She leaned in to kiss Maya's cheek, a quiet reminder of how much she appreciated Maya's constant support.

Alex, already seated at the dining table, was munching on a piece of toast, his iPad beside him playing a quiet episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He looked up as Maya approached him, excitement in his eyes despite the hospital visit.

"Mommy, do you think Dr. Link will take off my cast today?" Alex asked, his voice full of hope as he swung his legs back and forth.

Maya chuckled softly, ruffling his hair. "We'll see, buddy. Dr. Link will let us know how you're healing, and maybe it'll be time to take it off soon. But if not today, it'll be soon, I promise."

Alex nodded enthusiastically, clearly ready to be done with the cast. "Okay! I'm ready to go!"

With Alex settled in his booster seat and Carina in the front, they made their way to Grey Sloan, the hospital that had become more than just a workplace for Carina—it was where they had formed so many important connections and memories.

When they arrived, Maya helped Carina out of the car, offering her arm for balance, though Carina playfully swatted her hand away with a smile. "I'm fine, Maya," she teased. "Though I'm not complaining about having you as my personal assistant."

Maya grinned, giving Carina a wink as she helped Alex out of his seat. "I'm happy to be your personal assistant for as long as you need me," she replied, making Alex giggle as he grabbed onto Maya as she picked him up.

Once inside, they checked in at the orthopedic clinic, waiting in the familiar chairs outside Dr. Link's office.

It wasn't long before Link appeared, his friendly demeanor putting everyone at ease. "Hey, look who it is! My favorite patient," he greeted Alex with a warm smile, then turned to Carina. "And my other favorite patient. How are you both feeling?"

Carina smiled warmly. "Much better," she said, adjusting her arm in its sling. "The pain is manageable now, but I'm hoping you can tell me when I'll be back to full strength."

Link nodded, pulling out the necessary charts as he motioned for them to follow him into the exam room. "Let's take a look at everything," he said, gesturing for Carina to sit while he examined her first.

Maya stood nearby with Alex on her lap, watching as Link carefully checked Carina's healing progress. After going through her range of motion and checking the cast on her arm, Link smiled. "You're healing well, Carina. We'll give you another few weeks with the cast, and then we'll start physical therapy to get you back to full strength. But it's looking good—just don't push it too hard."

Carina nodded, relief washing over her face. "Thank you, Link."

Next, it was Alex's turn. He sat up straight on the exam table, his eyes wide as Link began examining his cast.

"How's it feeling, buddy?" Link asked, smiling at Alex.

"It itches a little," Alex admitted, squirming slightly. "But I've been careful, like Mommy said."

Link chuckled, patting Alex's leg. "That's good to hear. Let me take a look." After a few minutes of examination and X-rays, Link turned to Maya and Carina with a smile. "He's healing well too. We'll keep the cast on for a little longer, but it won't be long before he's running around without it."

Alex grinned at the news, clearly excited. "Yay!"

Maya smiled, squeezing Alex's hand. "See? Almost there, buddy."

Link handed over the final instructions for follow-ups and physical therapy appointments for Carina, giving them both a reassuring nod. "You two are on the right track. Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll be back to normal in no time."

After the appointment, as they made their way out of the hospital, Carina turned to Maya with a thoughtful look on her face.

"Maya, do you mind if we swing by my office for a minute?" Carina asked, her voice casual but with a hint of determination. "I want to pick up my laptop."

Maya immediately gave her a concerned look, the protective side of her flaring up. "Carina, are you sure that's a good idea? You're supposed to be resting, remember?" she said, her tone soft but firm. "You've still got a week off to heal properly. You don't need to worry about work right now."

Carina smiled softly at Maya's concern, knowing it came from a place of love. She reached out and gently took Maya's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I know, amore," she said, her voice gentle but filled with quiet resolve. "I'm not planning on jumping back into work. I just… I want to start looking at something."

Maya arched an eyebrow, still skeptical. "What is it?" she asked, clearly trying to figure out what Carina had in mind.

Carina's smile grew a little wider, her eyes lighting up as she continued. "Remember when Dr. Bailey mentioned the idea of the women's reproductive clinic? I was asked to be one of the founding members." She paused for a moment, gauging Maya's reaction before continuing. "I've been thinking about it a lot, and I want to start looking into the logistics. Just some research—nothing too intense."

Maya couldn't help but smile at the excitement in Carina's voice, but her concern still lingered. "I think that's amazing, Carina. I really do. But you need to make sure you're giving yourself enough time to recover," she said gently. "I know how passionate you are about this, but I don't want you pushing yourself too hard too soon."

Carina squeezed Maya's hand again, her expression softening as she looked into her eyes. "I promise, I won't overdo it," she assured her. "I just want to take a small step—something to keep my mind active. It's hard for me to sit still for too long, you know that."

Maya let out a small chuckle, knowing full well how restless Carina could get. "Yeah, I do know that," she admitted with a grin. "But I'm going to hold you to that promise. If I catch you working too hard, I'm taking that laptop away."

Carina laughed, leaning in to kiss Maya's cheek. "Deal," she said softly, appreciating how much Maya cared about her well-being.

They made a quick stop by Carina's office at Grey Sloan. Carina moved carefully, picking up her laptop and a few files she had been meaning to look over. As she slid the laptop into her bag, she gave Maya a grateful smile.

"Thank you for being so patient with me," Carina said as they made their way back to the car. "I know I can be a bit stubborn when it comes to things like this."

Maya grinned, leaning in to press a kiss to Carina's forehead. "I don't mind a little stubbornness," she teased. "As long as you promise to let me take care of you too."

Carina smiled warmly, feeling a deep sense of love for Maya. "I promise," she whispered. "And thank you for always taking such good care of me."

— — —

"Maya?" Carina called softly from the living room, her laptop resting on her lap as she took a break from her research. "What are you thinking about?"

Maya walked into the room, a smile spreading across her face as she saw Carina nestled comfortably on the couch. "I was just wondering if maybe we could invite Mason and his family over for dinner one night," she suggested, her voice bright with enthusiasm. "It could be nice to have some company and a little distraction from all of this."

Carina looked up, her interest piqued. "That sounds like a lovely idea!" she replied, her eyes sparkling with the thought of having family around. "What did you have in mind for dinner?"

"Something simple, maybe tacos or a pasta night? We could set up a little buffet style so everyone can choose what they want," Maya suggested, already envisioning the fun atmosphere they could create.

Carina smiled warmly, her heart swelling at Maya's thoughtfulness. "I love that idea. Plus, I know Mason's kids would have a blast playing with Alex. It would be nice to see everyone."

Maya nodded, feeling a sense of excitement at the prospect. "Great! I'll text Mason and see when they're free. I just think it would be good for all of us."

"Absolutely," Carina agreed, her voice filled with warmth.

As Maya pulled out her phone, she couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of purpose. The thought of bringing everyone together filled her with joy, and she knew that this little gathering could be the perfect remedy for the long days they had been facing.

After sending the message, she looked back at Carina, who was still smiling, a hint of excitement in her eyes. "I can't wait to see the kids together," Carina said. "I think they will have so much fun."

— — —

Maya had spent the day preparing a delicious spread of tacos, guacamole, and various toppings, determined to create a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, Maya set the table in the dining area, adding colorful plates and vibrant decorations to set the mood. She could hear Alex giggling in the living room, playing a game with Carina, who was seated comfortably on the couch with her arm propped up on a pillow.

"Are you ready for our guests, buddy?" Maya called out to Alex, who was buzzing with excitement.

"Yeah! I can't wait to see Maddie and Mia!" he shouted back, bouncing on his feet.

Just as Maya finished setting the table, there was a knock at the door. "That must be them!" she exclaimed, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel as she rushed to answer.

When she opened the door, Mason stood there with a big grin, his wife Beth beside him, and their two daughters, Maddie and Mia, standing excitedly at their parents' sides.

"Hey, you guys! Welcome!" Maya greeted, stepping aside to let them in.

"Maya! It smells amazing in here!" Mason said, stepping inside, followed by Beth and the girls.

"Thanks! I hope you're all hungry!" Maya replied, ushering them into the dining area.

Maddie and Mia immediately rushed over to where Alex was, their eyes wide with excitement. "Alex!" they shouted in unison, running to him.

"Hey! Come play with me!" Alex exclaimed, leading them into the living room, their laughter echoing through the house.

Beth smiled at Maya as they watched the kids. "Thank you so much for inviting us over. It's great to see everyone," she said, giving Maya a warm hug.

"I'm so glad you all could make it! It's been a while since we all got together," Maya replied, returning the hug. "Carina's in the living room if you want to say hi before dinner."

"Of course!" Beth said, heading over to Carina, who was still comfortably situated on the couch but beaming at the sight of her friends.

"Hey, you!" Carina greeted Beth with a warm smile. "I'm so glad you all came over."

"I wouldn't miss it! How are you feeling?" Beth asked, settling down on the couch next to her.

"Much better, thank you! Just taking it easy and letting Maya do all the heavy lifting," Carina teased, glancing toward the kitchen where Maya was putting the finishing touches on the food.

"Hey, I've been meaning to ask—how are you and Alex doing after the ferry accident?" Beth inquired, her tone filled with genuine care. "I know it must have been tough for both of you."

Maya exchanged a glance with Carina, who gave her a reassuring nod. Taking a deep breath, Maya stepped forward. "It's been a bit of a journey, to say the least. We were both shaken up after the accident, but thankfully, Alex only had a broken leg that seems to be healing well."

Carina chimed in, her voice steady but tinged with the emotions of the experience. "I sustained a fracture, some lacerations and a bruised lung, but I'm on the mend now. It was really scary at first, but we've been leaning on each other."

Beth nodded empathetically. "I can't even imagine how frightening that must have been for you both. Thank goodness it wasn't worse."

"It definitely could have been," Maya agreed. "It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, with hospital visits and recovery, but we're taking it one day at a time." She glanced at Carina, feeling a swell of gratitude for the way they had handled everything together. "We're just grateful to be home now and to have each other."

Beth smiled softly, her expression filled with understanding. "I'm so glad you're both on the road to recovery. If you ever need anything or want company, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here for you."

"Thank you, that means a lot," Carina said, her eyes shining with appreciation. "It's comforting to know we have such supportive friends."

Maya added, "And having you guys over tonight has really helped lift our spirits. It's nice to have some normalcy, even amidst everything that's been going on."

In the dining area, Mason wandered over to Maya, who was arranging the taco toppings. "Looks fantastic, Maya. You really outdid yourself," he said, giving her a playful nudge.

"Thanks! I just wanted to make it special. The kids are excited, and I thought it would be nice to have a little fun," Maya replied, a grin spreading across her face.

"Fun is exactly what we need! It's been a busy few weeks for all of us," Mason said, leaning against the counter.

Once the food was ready, Maya gathered everyone around the table, and they filled their plates with an array of toppings. The table was lively, filled with chatter and laughter as the kids shared stories and playful banter.

"Maya, this is so good!" Maddie exclaimed, her mouth full of tacos.

"Yeah! Can we come over for tacos every week?" Mia added, her eyes shining with excitement.

"We don't have tacos every week. We eat all kinds of things for dinner" Alex chimed in, and the girls giggled. "Can we have dessert now?" Alex shouted, wiggling in his chair.

Maya chuckled, the earlier conversation fading into the background. "Yes! I think we can manage some chocolate cake, can't we?"

"Yay!" The girls cheered in unison, their excitement radiating throughout the room.

Beth turned her attention back to the kids, her smile brightening. "Alright, let's get that cake out and make sure everyone gets a big slice!"

As the kids dove into their dessert and the room filled with the sound of giggles and playful banter, Maya took a moment to catch up with Mason, who was sitting at the dining table with his own slice of chocolate cake.

"Hey, how's the new job going?" Maya asked, leaning against the table with a curious smile. She hadn't had a chance to really ask him about it in detail yet.

Mason looked up, his face lighting up at the question. "It's going well, actually! Definitely a big change from my last role, but I'm starting to get into the groove of things," he said, taking a bite of cake before continuing. "There's a lot more responsibility, which can be a little overwhelming at times, but I'm enjoying the challenge."

Maya nodded, intrigued. "I bet! I remember you mentioning it was a step up. What's been the hardest adjustment so far?"

Mason chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Honestly? The amount of decision-making. I mean, I was always part of the team before, but now I'm the one people are looking to for the final say on big projects. It's a bit of pressure, but I'm learning to trust my instincts more."

Beth chimed in from across the table, smiling at Mason. "He's being modest. He's doing an amazing job. I've seen how much his team respects him."

"Yeah, I've heard great things about you," Maya added with a grin. "You've always been good with people, so I'm sure you're killing it in a leadership role."

Mason shrugged with a modest smile. "I'm doing my best. There's definitely a learning curve, but it helps that I have a solid team. And Beth's right—having their respect makes all the difference. It's not easy, but it's rewarding."

Carina, who was sitting nearby and listening to the conversation, spoke up. "That's really wonderful, Mason. It sounds like you're thriving, even with the extra pressure. You've always been great at balancing work and family."

Mason smiled at the compliment, his eyes softening as he glanced at his daughters, who were still animatedly talking with Alex. "It's definitely a balancing act, but I try to make sure I'm present for the girls as much as possible, even with the new job."

"That's so important," Maya said, nodding in agreement. "I know how much family means to you, and you've always been great at showing up for them. It's nice to hear that the job's going well but that you're still making time for what really matters."

"Thanks, Maya," Mason replied, a genuine smile on his face. "It's been a bit of an adjustment for all of us, but we're making it work. And tonight has been a great reminder of why it's all worth it—family, good food, and moments like these."

After dessert, the atmosphere in the living room was lively and full of energy. With the kids buzzing from the chocolate cake, Maya looked around and suggested, "How about we play a game of charades? It's always a fun way to get everyone involved."

The kids cheered at the idea, while Mason and Beth exchanged amused glances, clearly ready for some lighthearted competition. Carina smiled, leaning back in her seat. "That sounds perfect! Alex, have you ever played charades before?"

Alex shook his head, his eyes wide with curiosity. "What's that?"

Maya knelt down beside him, eager to explain. "Okay, so charades is a game where you act out words or phrases without speaking. You use gestures, movements, and your body to help everyone guess what you're trying to say."

"Yeah!" Carina added, her voice animated. "You can pretend to be animals, movies, or even actions like brushing your teeth. The goal is to get your team to guess what you're acting out!"

Alex's face lit up with excitement. "That sounds awesome! Can I act out a dinosaur?"

"Absolutely!" Maya laughed, giving him an encouraging smile. "You can act out anything you want. Just remember, no talking. You can only use your hands and body to show us what it is."

Maddie and Mia chimed in, eager to join the fun. "Can we be on the same team as Alex?" Maddie asked, bouncing with excitement.

"Of course!" Carina said. "That way, you can all help each other guess. Mason and Beth, do you want to be on a team together?"

"Sure, we can take on the kids!" Mason replied with a grin, ready for the challenge.

"Alright, here's how it will work," Maya explained, standing up and clapping her hands to gather everyone's attention. "Each team will take turns. One person will act out a word or phrase while the others guess. You'll have one minute to guess as many as you can!"

"And to keep it fair, we'll set a timer," Carina added, reaching for her phone. "Who wants to go first?"

"I do! I want to go first!" Alex declared, raising his hand enthusiastically.

"Alright, Alex, you're up!" Maya encouraged, stepping aside to give him room.

Alex took a deep breath, determination shining in his eyes. "Okay, I'm ready!" He began acting out a dinosaur, arms flailing as he let out exaggerated roars.

Mia and Maddie giggled, immediately shouting, "Dinosaur! It's a dinosaur!"

"Good job, guys!" Carina cheered, clapping her hands.

After a minute of laughter and wild gestures from Alex, the kids correctly guessed his first charade. "That was awesome! Who's next?" Maya asked, grinning at the energy in the room.

"I'll go next!" Maddie said, bouncing on her toes as she stepped forward, clearly eager to act out her turn.

The game of charades continued with even more laughter and enthusiasm as the teams took turns acting out different words and phrases. After Maddie's turn, where she expertly mimed brushing her teeth, it was Mason's time to step up.

"Alright, let's see what you've got, big brother," Maya teased, crossing her arms and giving him a playful look.

Mason chuckled, stepping into the center of the room. He picked his card, glanced at it briefly, and then immediately dropped to the floor, pretending to swim. His exaggerated arm strokes and the comical way he pretended to struggle against imaginary waves had everyone bursting out laughing.

"Swimming!" Mia shouted excitedly.

Mason gave her a thumbs-up as he continued the act, but then switched to diving, pantomiming a deep-sea adventure complete with a search for treasure. The kids were in fits of giggles, their guesses flying out rapid-fire.

"Diving? Scuba diving?" Alex asked, bouncing in excitement.

"Yes! That's it!" Mason confirmed, standing up with a grin.

Beth clapped her hands, clearly impressed. "You've still got it, Mason!"

Maya and Carina exchanged amused glances. "Not bad!" Maya said, nudging Carina. "What do you think? Should we show them how it's done?"

Carina grinned back. "Oh, definitely."

The two of them decided to take the next turn together, and as Maya stood up, she grabbed Carina's good hand and led her to the center of the room. "Alright, prepare to be amazed," Maya announced with a wink.

By the time the game wrapped up, everyone was exhausted from laughing and acting out their turns. The kids flopped onto the couch, still giggling, while the adults exchanged satisfied smiles, grateful for the evening of joy and fun.

"Alright, I think that's enough charades for one night," Maya said, sitting down and pulling Alex into her lap. "What do you say, bud? Did you have fun?"

"I had so much fun!" Alex replied, his face flushed with excitement. "Can we play again next time?"

"Absolutely," Carina said, ruffling his hair affectionately. "We'll definitely do this again."

As Mason and his family were gathering their things, getting ready to leave, he overheard something that made him pause. Alex, still bubbling with excitement from the game of charades, tugged on Maya's sleeve and called out, "Mommy, can we play charades again tomorrow?"

Maya smiled down at him, ruffling his hair affectionately. "We'll see, buddy. Maybe after we clean up, we can do something else fun."

Mason, standing near the doorway with Beth and his daughters, couldn't help but notice the word "Mommy." His brow furrowed slightly in curiosity, but his expression quickly softened. He hadn't heard Alex call Maya that before, and it clearly warmed his heart to hear the bond between them so naturally expressed.

After a few more goodbyes and hugs, Mason lingered for a moment, waiting until the kids were out of earshot. He gave Maya a meaningful look and a soft smile, tilting his head slightly. "I couldn't help but notice… Alex called you 'Mommy.'"

Maya froze for a split second, glancing at Carina, who met her gaze with a knowing smile. Maya felt a mix of emotions—pride, happiness, and maybe just a touch of vulnerability. She hadn't realized Mason had picked up on it, but the way he said it made her feel safe to share.

"Yeah," Maya said, her voice a little softer than usual. "He started calling me 'Mommy' after the accident, and it just kind of… stuck. I guess it feels right for him."

Mason's smile grew warmer, and he gave a small nod. "That's amazing, Maya. It suits you," he said sincerely. "You've always had a strong bond with Alex. I'm really happy to hear that."

Carina stepped in, her voice filled with love and pride. "He adores Maya. It wasn't something we pushed, but Alex felt comfortable, and when he started calling her 'Mommy,' it just made sense for all of us."
