Chapter Thirteen
After Izzy and Cubby's voices faded into the distance, Jake let out a sigh and plopped onto a nearby rock. Skully, perched on his shoulder, tilted his head and gave him a gentle peck.
"What's the matter, Jake?" he asked, his tone a mix of concern and curiosity.
Jake managed a small shrug.
"Nothing's wrong," he replied, but his gaze was distant. "I just… hope we find that key soon. And I hope Izzy and Cubby don't end up… disappearing, like everyone else…" He rubbed the back of his neck, unease prickling under his skin. "Next thing we know, even Captain Hook'll go missing."
Skully squawked, shaking his feathers with a huff.
"That old featherhat? He's probably snoring away in that ship of his right now. You couldn't wake him up with a stick of dynamite!"
But just as Skully finished speaking, a sharp flash of lightning split the air, followed by a deafening crack of thunder that echoed through the trees. Then, just as quickly as it appeared, the sound was gone, leaving the forest in silence once more.
"Or a crash of thunder," Jake muttered, glancing upward. He rose to his feet, scanning the sky, but it was eerily clear. Only a few stray clouds dotted the sky, drifting lazily as if nothing had happened. "Where did that even come from?"
Skully looked just as baffled.
"No idea," he admitted, fluffing his feathers again. "Lately, I have no idea about a lot of things. Especially this crazy weather!"
Jake nodded, the knot in his chest tightening a bit more.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "I wish I knew something—anything—about what's going on….and where the others are. I hope they're not… lost."
Amber Talstein moved briskly up the steep, winding path, her steps unwavering despite the increasingly jagged rocks and thinning air. Maverick trailed a few paces behind, breathing hard. As they climbed, her leather satchel bounced lightly against her side, carrying the precious vials she planned to use to claim back what her boys had lost.
After a while, Maverick couldn't hold back his groan of exhaustion.
"Are we… there yet?" he whined, glancing up at his mother as if she might have forgotten their goal.
Amber barely turned her head, her piercing blue eyes fixed forward.
"We'll be there when we find that pest Jake and retrieve our key." she replied sharply, her voice carrying just enough edge to remind Maverick that her patience was thin. Maverick gulped, trying to hide his concern. He couldn't shake the memory of the nervous look Patrick had given him earlier, the same one that warned him to keep quiet. Because, for all they knew, the key might have been flung out somewhere in Neverland's wild hills, far from Jake's reach—or theirs.
As they hiked on, Maverick chanced another question.
"Why didn't you bring Jack with you for this one?" he asked, trying to sound casual. "You always take him when it's important."
Amber let out a small, humorless chuckle.
"Your brother is better suited for the assignment he's on, and you," she said, giving him a side glance. "...are better suited for this one." 'I hope'.
Maverick swallowed nervously, not entirely sure what that meant. But before he could dwell on it, a loud crash of thunder shook the sky above, followed by a blinding flash of lightning. He jumped, instinctively ducking, while Amber barely flinched. She smiled, casting her gaze skyward.
"Captain's having a field day with Hook, I'd imagine," she said, almost to herself. "If he's cracking out the lightning, I'd wager he's in a lively mood."
Maverick forced a chuckle, though his mind churned with worry. If the captain got wind of their lost key, lightning would be the least of his concerns.
He opened his mouth to confess, but just then, faint voices drifted up the path, interrupting his thoughts. High-pitched, innocent voices, laughing and chattering like they didn't have a care in the world. Amber tensed and held up a hand, signaling him to stay silent.
"You hear that?" she whispered, her tone alive with interest.
Maverick nodded, suddenly recognizing the voices.
"Yeah. That's Jake's crew alright."
Amber's eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
"So, we've found them," She surged forward, her pace quickening. Maverick scrambled to keep up, and soon they found themselves standing on a high ridge that looked down over the dense jungle. Amber scanned the area below until her gaze locked onto a small clearing where a little girl in pink and a pudgy boy in blue were resting. "Is that them?" she murmured, her gaze sharp as ice.
Maverick nodded.
"Well….most of them, yeah."
Amber's face dropped.
"What do you mean most of them?" she asked, turning her head to face her son.
"I mean….Jake's not with them..well at least I don't see him."
Amber's face darkened slightly, her lips thinning.
"You are serious!?"
"Positive even," he replied. "You'd know him if you saw him. That boy is nowhere down there."
Amber's fingers twitched with frustration.
"How!? Of all the little…." her expression softened into a sly grin as her gaze settled on one of the two children specifically. "You know what…nevertheless, I suppose they'll do," She turned to Maverick, her smile widening. "Are you ready?"
Maverick nodded quickly, standing straighter.
Amber knelt down, reaching for a delicate, white flower growing stubbornly in the rocky soil. She held it up, carefully removing the same small vial from her satchel, the contents of which glowed a vibrant green and a sprinkling texture reminiscent of pixie dust. She removed the stopper and sprinkled a fine, sparkling dust over the flower, careful to not get any on her own delicate hands, watching as it absorbed the powder and began to shimmer faintly.
Amber held the enchanted flower out to Maverick.
"Remember not to touch the petals," she said. "Other than that, you know what to do. It's time to take our positions."
"Cubby, are we lost?" Izzy asked, sounding more run down than worried.
Cubby looked up from the map with a hesitant smile.
"Nope! Definitely… probably not." He hesitated, scratching his head. "Or… maybe?"
Izzy groaned, wishing more than ever that she had her pixie dust. It could light their way and get them out of this mess a lot faster.
The pirate boy shuddered, nervously glancing at their surroundings.
"Do you think… that tremor could come back?" He looked at Izzy with wide blue eyes.
Izzy, who was a few paces ahead, stopped and turned around with a confident grin.
"Probably not," she said after a little giggle at his constant worrying. "Don't worry, Cubby. We'll be fine. I'm sure that was just a one time thing. Nothing strange is gonna happen anymore."
But she stopped mid-sentence, her eyes widening as she caught sight of something directly above Cubby. The boy was unknowingly standing right beneath the jaws of an enormous plant that looked like a fly trap—only Cubby was about to become its "fly."
"Except for that!" she called darting over and grabbing him just as the plant's jaws snapped shut with a loud chomp.
"C-c-coconuts! N-nothing like a visit from your f-f-friendly n-neighborhood fly trap…" he trembled.
"Shiver me timbers, was that close!"
"Sure was. Th-thanks, Izzy." Cubby whispered, still pale with shock as she patted his shoulder, steering him away from the giant, hungry plant.
Izzy managed a small laugh, though her grip on him was firm.
"No problem matey, just try to be a little more careful," she said, patting his shoulder. "Now, nothing else strange is gonna happen." she reassured, giving him a confident nod.
But the words had barely left her mouth when the sky lit up with a flash of lightning, followed by a crash of thunder. The two kids shrieked, clutching each other as the rumbling died just as quickly as it had come, leaving the jungle eerily quiet again.
Izzy gulped, trying to recover her composure.
"...Starting now.." she corrected, taking Cubby's hand and pulling him along, her eyes darting nervously around the jungle. "Let's just… keep moving ok Cubby?"
Cubby clung tightly to her rosy shirt, glancing around at every snap and rustle in the dense jungle, his steps dragging with reluctance. Izzy, though also tense, kept moving forward, her eyes scanning for any sign of an exit. Finally, she spotted a thick curtain of vines up ahead and, with a quick motion, swept them aside. A bright, empty grassy valley stretched out before them, illuminated by the open sky and bordered by tall cliffs.
Izzy smiled, nudging Cubby.
"Yay hey! We're finally out of that jungle!" Her voice was light with relief, but Cubby frowned.
"Maybe, but that just means we've wandered even farther away from Big Tree Forest…and Jake and Skully," he muttered, staring out into the open space with a worried look. "What do we do now?" he asked, before glancing back at the dark spooky jungle behind him. "W-w-we're n-not going back that way…r-right?"
Izzy sighed, her shoulders slumping.
"If I only had more pixie dust, we'd be able to get up high enough to see the whole island and find them in no time."
She trailed off, her gaze catching on a dark opening high up on the cliff face—a cave. An idea sparked in her eyes, and she grabbed Cubby's arm, pointing toward it.
"Hey, look at that! Maybe we could climb up there! If we get high enough, I bet we'd be able to spot Jake and Skully from up top."
Cubby's face immediately turned pale.
"Uh-uh! No way! It's dark, it's scary, and what if there's something in that cave?"
Izzy squinted at the cave, giving a small shrug.
"There's probably nothing up there but empty space. And besides, it's our only chance, so what do you say?"
Cubby still shook his head firmly, taking a step back.
"Nope. You've got this one, Izzy. I'll just… wait right here."
Izzy shrugged but didn't argue.
"Oh well, suit yourself. Don't worry Cubby, I'll be back in a jiffy!"
She tightened her bandana, squared her shoulders, and started toward the cliff, determined. But as she got closer and craned her neck to see the climb ahead, she realized the cave was a tad bit higher than she'd expected. Much higher, in fact.
Cubby's heart pounded as he stood there in the valley, under the pale, silvery glow of the moonlight, feeling very small and very alone. Shadows stretched across the grass, every faint rustle and creak filling his head with wild imaginings. His hands trembled as he clutched the map, whispering to himself.
"Oh please, please hurry," he muttered, glancing nervously at the cliff. She had been gone only a few minutes, but every second stretched into an eternity. He shivered, realizing how cold and eerie the night had become.
A sudden snap of a twig behind him jolted him to attention. He spun around, eyes wide, only to find... nothing. Just more shadows, swaying grass, and an unsettling silence. Cubby let out a shaky breath, trying to steady himself.
"I-it's ok-k-k. It's just my imagination... j-just the wind." he murmured.
But then came another sound—a soft rustling from the trees above, like something shifting through the branches. Cubby's head snapped upward, his heart racing, but once again, the treetops seemed still. His voice wavered as he tried to convince himself.
But he couldn't shake the feeling that something—or someone—was watching him from the shadows. He took a small, hesitant step backward, his gaze darting between the trees, then back to the cliffside where his matey had disappeared. The empty valley suddenly felt like it was closing in on him, every shadow a possible threat.
"Izzy!?" he whispered, more urgently this time, clutching the map tightly to his chest. His grip was so tight that the crinkling of the paper was loud in the stillness, making him wince.
Another snap—closer this time. Cubby froze, feeling the prickling sensation of being watched. His breathing quickened, and he glanced frantically toward the forest.
"Aw coconuts."
With one final pull, the little pirate girl had reached the top, panting as she clambered up the last ledge of the cliffside and finally reached the cave's mouth. Standing up, she peered around, hoping to catch sight of Jake or Skully on the ground, but there was no sign of either of them. Frustration bubbled up inside her as she realized the climb had been for nothing.
"After all that…." she sighed, hanging her head. "I climbed all the way up here just to find... nothing?"
She took a deep breath, calming herself. Her gaze drifted out over the cliff, and she noticed the familiar, towering canopy of Big Tree Forest in the distance, just past the strange jungle they'd wandered through.
"Well, at least I can see Big Tree Forest from here," she scanned the scenery again. "Hmm…maybe if we go back that way, we'll find them," she thought aloud. "...or we could get lost again….." she mumbled, glancing back down the cliffside to where Cubby waited. "Oh well, guess there's only one way to….huh…."
Just as she was about to turn and start the careful climb down, a soft, flickering light caught the corner of her eye.
A spark—sea-green, like the glow of the Neverseas—shimmered faintly from deeper inside the cave. The light was enchanting, mysterious, and Izzy's curiosity got the best of her. Without thinking twice, she stepped toward it, the echo of her footsteps disappearing into the stillness. The light pulsed gently, guiding her farther in. The cave stretched back much farther than she'd expected, growing darker and narrower the deeper she went, until the entrance was a mere sliver of moonlight in the distance.
She rounded a corner, and there it was—a flower, gleaming with the most brilliant green light she had ever seen.
"Woah….." she gasped in awe.
The delicate petals glowed as if they were spun from emeralds, casting a gentle, hypnotic glow over the dark cave walls. Izzy's breath caught, mesmerized by the sight.
"I've never seen anything like this….," she observed, stepping closer to begin circling around the flower. "How could something so….beautiful survive in a dark cave like this?" She felt compelled to get closer, her footsteps slowing as she moved toward it, her mind growing foggy as she focused on nothing but the flower.
Her hand reached out, fingers trembling as they inched toward the flower's glowing petals. She was so entranced that she didn't notice Maverick, hidden behind a cluster of rocks, watching her every move. His breath was shallow, and he barely dared to blink, keeping perfectly still as he waited.
Meanwhile, at the cave's entrance, Maverick's mother lurked in the shadows, a knowing smile curving her lips. Izzy had walked right past her without even noticing, and now Amber watched with satisfaction as the young pirate drew closer to the flower, helplessly enchanted.
"That's right little pirate…," Amber murmured softly, so quietly it was barely a whisper. "Just a little bit closer. Touch the pretty flower…
Izzy inched closer, her hand slowly extending toward the flower as if it had a mind of its own. Her mind was completely blank except for the dazzling green light that seemed to pulse with life, drawing her closer. Even if she wanted to pull away, her body wouldn't listen, yet the thought never even crossed her mind. The flower was magical, she was sure of it. Maybe the fairies had planted it here, hidden away in this dark cave, just waiting for her to find it.
The closer she got, the brighter it glowed, its soft light filling her mind with warmth. She reached out her fingers, eager to touch it, feeling as though the world had stopped around her. Just as her fingertips brushed the edge of a petal, she heard a voice from outside, loud and frantic.
"IZZ-Y!" Cubby's voice echoed through the cave, cutting through the fog in her mind like a cold splash of water. She jolted back, breaking the trance, and stumbled backward, landing on the cave floor. Blinking in confusion, she gasped, her heart racing as she struggled to make sense of what had just happened. What...what was that?
Realizing she'd wandered off and left Cubby alone, Izzy's cheeks flushed with a pang of guilt. She scrambled to her feet, brushing off her clothes, and without a second glance at the mesmerizing flower, she turned and hurried back toward the entrance. She couldn't believe she'd been drawn in so easily. She'd just have to explain things to Cubby… somehow.
Amber, lurking in the shadows near the cave's entrance, grit her teeth in frustration as she watched the plan fall apart. She moved swiftly back into her hiding place, cloaked in darkness once more, as Izzy approached, oblivious to the trap she'd narrowly escaped. The woman's eyes narrowed as the girl passed her, unseeing, her footsteps echoing against the cave walls.
But just as Izzy neared the entrance, something glimmered on the ground—a delicate silver necklace, glinting faintly in the dim light. Izzy halted, her gaze catching on the tiny chain and the small, intricately crafted key that dangled from it. She crouched down, gently picking it up, curiosity flickering in her mind as she examined it.
"This wasn't here before…" she mumbled. "Where…when..." she wondered, her fingers tracing the key's unusual shape.
With the necklace in one hand, she took a steadying breath and hurried out of the cave, making her way down the cliffside with new resolve. As the moonlight touched her face again, she focused only on getting out of this cave, leaving the strange flower—and whatever strange spell it had cast—far behind.
