Ness woke up from his alarm. He laid there for another twenty minutes. Today is the day that he won't have Lucky anymore. He felt relieved but also terrible at the same time. He's happy he won't have to deal with that brat, but also…

Ness: (No, Ness. Don't let your emotions take over and ruin this chance. Once Lucky is gone, I'll be free.)

He got up from bed. He put on a sweater, a band t-shirt over it, and cargo pants. He didn't forget about his signature hat and rucksack.

He sent out Lucky and gave him food like usual. Lately, Lucky hasn't said much to his owner. In fact, he completely shut down. He stopped eating. He only drank water and even then it wasn't much. Ness noticed that Lucky was getting skinnier and it made him feel guilty, but soon he won't have to be worried about his Pokemon anymore.

Lucky was expecting his owner to order him to eat in a cold manner, but today was different. The Espeon saw his trainer's face. Instead of anger, he looked sad.

Lucky: "Espii."

Lucky walked over to Ness and rubbed his cheek on his leg. He didn't say a word. He looked away, sat on his desk, and started scrolling through his phone.

Lucky began eating his food. Ness saw and his eyes brightened. He's actually eating. What's so different today?

Once Lucky was done eating, he walked over to his ball and sat down on the floor eyeing it. Ness hesitantly grabbed it.

Ness: "Lay down."

Lucky did as he was told.

Ness: "Sit up."

Lucky sat up.

Ness: "Paw."

Lucky gently placed his paw on Ness's hand.

Ness: "Why?"

Lucky tilted his head in confusion. "Espii?"

Ness: "Why now are you listening?"

Lucky: "Espeon."

Ness: "Y-you're trying to guilt me, but it's not going to work. Tonight, you're going to have a brand new trainer, and they're going to treat you better than I could ever wish to. They're going to give you a new home and you'll be happier."

Lucky: "Espii…"

Ness: "S-STOP!"

Lucky: "..."

Taking care of Lucky feels like taking care of an actual child. It's so frustrating when his Pokemon doesn't listen and dirties up the room. He hates taking him out for walks. Everything about Lucky is a chore. Yeah, that's why he's getting rid of him. It's nothing else but Lucky. He's the one that doesn't listen. He's the problem. N-nothing else.

He returned Lucky inside the ball and sat on his desk. He didn't want any attention from anyone so he bought a box of pizza and got it delivered to him.

After he finished eating a whole box of pizza to himself, he went on League and started playing. He heard the discord notification sound.

Nate: ness?

Nate is typing…

That message has been going on for a while now. Ness wondered what he was going to say next. However, it stopped. It's been over ten minutes and he hasn't added anything.

Ness wanted to text back, but he was feeling depressed. His brain was telling him to push everyone away. He didn't know why. He didn't want this. He's going back to the way he used to. He hates this! He hates himself! He's the absolute worst kind of person…

He wanted to cry so desperately, but he kept fighting back his tears. Even though he's alone in his own room, he felt like there was a crowd of people watching and laughing at him. His room no longer felt safe. It started to feel cramped. It's hard to breathe in here. He needs air.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

That's his timer! Oh… That means it's time to meet up with that person. That's perfect! He was going to head outside anyway. He grabbed his Pokeball and shoved it in his pants pocket.

As he was walking over to the smash plaza, Lucas ran up to him. He tapped him on the shoulder which scared the shit out of Ness.

Ness: "Aaah! D-dude!"

Lucas: "I know what you're doing and I'm here to stop you."

Ness: "What?"

Lucas: "You haven't talked to me for a whole week. You haven't been taking Lucky out on walks either. When I saw you walking, I knew immediately that today is the day."

Ness: "..."

Lucas: "Don't give Lucky up."

Ness: "Lucas, don't try to stop me. You know I'm not capable of taking care of anything. I can't even take care of myself."

Lucas: "Is this even about Lucky?"

Ness: "What're you talking about?"

Lucas: "You know it's not Lucky's fault."

Ness: "Fine, whatever, it's my fault."

Lucas: "You and Lucky were doing so well. You two were getting better. He started listening to you more. He was getting better at performing those tricks."

Ness: "It's not good enough. I'M not good enough."

Lucas: "Are you sure this is what you wanna do?"

Ness averted his eyes, put his arm on his shoulder, and looked away.

Lucas: "If this is what you REALLY wanted I wouldn't be trying to stop you right now."

Ness: "I… I can't do this."

Lucas: "Not too long ago you were so destined to train Lucky and be there for him. Your eyes sparkled whenever you talked about the contest and how you two were gonna win."

Ness: "That was a while ago. Things change."

Lucas: "I feel like you don't want to do this."

Ness: "I CAN'T TAKE CARE OF ANYTHING OK! I'm… I'm a terrible caregiver. I-I can't handle this much pressure."

Lucas: "Is this about Leaf?"

Ness: "What?"

Lucas: "It's been four months. Next month her stomach is probably going to show."

Ness: "..."

Lucas: "Is it because Lucky is reminding you of what could happen to you in the future?"

Ness: "I-I…"

Lucas: "You can tell me."

Ness: "No, ok. This has nothing to do with Leaf. This is mainly because I can't take care of Lucky."

Lucas: "If you can't take care of Lucky, then you definitely can't be there for Leaf."

Ness: "Why're you bringing her up?"

Lucas: "Because I know this is why you're getting rid of Lucky. He's reminding you of a human baby that you might have to take care of, and you're scared."

Ness: "I-I… I don't need this!"

He pushed Lucas aside. He ran to the speed of sound and used PK teleport. He knew the blonde couldn't use that PK power. This was the only way to fully lose him. He made it to Smash Plaza. He took out his phone and texted the person.

Eeveelover: I see you! I'm heading over right now

He saw a person walking up to him. He forced a smile and waved.

Eeveelover: "Hey, nice to meet you."

Ness: "Hey, so uh… Yeah let me get him out."

Ness took out his Pokeball and stared at it.

Eeveelover: "Why is it chained up?"

Ness: "Um… So he wouldn't get out without permission."

Eeveelover: "Oh, I see."

Ness took out the chains and summoned Lucky out.

Lucky: "Espii?"

Eeveelover: "Aww, he's so cute!"

Ness: "Y-yup."

A flood of memories invaded Ness's mind. He remembered walking Lucky every day with Lucas. They would go on and on about whatever while Lucky enjoyed the walk.

He remembered people going up to him and complimenting his Espeon. Lucky would be so happy to see them and give them lots of kisses. Guess that won't happen anymore, huh?

The person bent down to pet Lucky, but the Espeon hid between Ness's legs.

Ness: "No, Lucky, you gotta go."

Lucky: "Espiii."

Eeveelover: "Aww, he really loves you."

Ness: "You think?"

Eeveelover: "Yeah, look at him."

Lucky was shaking and continued to cower behind Ness.

Ness: "C'mon, Lucky, you have to go. You'll be happier."

Lucky shook his head and started crying. Ness saw those tears and it broke him. The poor Espeon didn't know why this was happening. He was confused and scared.

Ness handed the person the Pokeball.

Ness: "Sorry, but you have no choice, Lucky."

Lucky: "Espii! Espiii! ESPIII! ESPIIIIIII!"

Ness grit his teeth and looked away. He pushed the bill of his hat down so no one could see his face.

Eeveelover: "So how much did you want again?"

Ness: "Um, maybe like… three hundred dollars."

Eeveelover: "Ok, lemme get my wallet."

While the person was digging through their backpack, Ness stared at Lucky who was sitting there staring at his ex-owner with tears in his eyes. It hurt the brunet. He looked away, so that he wouldn't change his mind.

Eeveelover: "Alright, here you go."

The person handed him the cash. He reluctantly took it.

Eeveelover: "Thank you. I promise I'll take good care of him."

Lucky: "ESPIII! ESPEON! ESPIIIIII!" (NO DON'T ABANDON ME! I PROMISE I'LL LISTEN FROM NOW ON!)

Ness: "Bye, Lucky."

Ness turned around and started walking away. He was still able to hear Lucky's cries. He tightened his fists and grit his teeth.

Ness: (Don't turn around. Don't turn around. Don't turn around.)

Suddenly Lucky's cries stopped. Ness instinctively turned around and saw that the person returned Lucky inside the ball. He watched in disbelief as the person started walking the opposite direction with 'his' pokeball.

Leaf is going to be so disappointed when she finds out what he did. Lucas is already disappointed. He couldn't imagine Leaf's wrath. In fact, she might not even talk to him again.

Lucas: "You and Lucky were doing so well. You two were getting better. He started listening to you more. He was getting better at performing those tricks."

Ness: "It's not good enough. I'M not good enough."

Lucas: "Are you sure this is what you wanna do?"

His eyes widened. He ran back over to the person and put his hand on their shoulder.

Eeveelover: "Y-yes?"

Ness: "I changed my mind."

Eeveelover: "Sorry, but this Espeon is mine."

Ness handed the person the cash back.

Ness: "Please."

Eeveelover: "No, I'm not giving you the Espeon."

Ness: *Sighs* "Look, that Espeon means everything to me and… I took him for granted."

For once Ness couldn't hold back his tears. He started crying and the person couldn't help but feel bad.

Ness: "I just… I'm dealing with a lot. I don't want to lose my best friend. W-we… *Sobs* We survived together in the mountains. I-I'm supposed to be the smart one. I'm supposed to know everything. But I didn't understand Lucky and that made me insecure and scared."

Eeveelover: "..."

Ness: "I'm sorry, I don't know why I'm telling you all this. It's funny actually. I can't even tell my true best friend my honest feelings yet I'm telling you all this."

Eeveelover: "It seems like you need to face your fears and talk about your feelings."

Ness: "Yeah. I guess it's easier for me when I don't know the person."

Eeveelover: "Look I… You know what, do you want to go somewhere and talk about it?"

Ness: "N… Y-yeah, kinda."

The person and Ness went over to a bar and ordered appetizers.

Eeveelover: "My name is Fiora by the way. I'm a spirit from Xenoblade Chronicles."

Ness: "Nice to meet you. I'm Ness."

Fiora: "So, what's been going on?"

Ness: "A lot… But I guess the biggest thing right now is that my friend is pregnant. That's what's been bothering me."

Fiora: "Is it yours?"

Ness: "No! Well… Kinda? It's complicated."

Fiora: "What do you mean kinda? It's either yours or isn't."

Ness: "Well, yeah, but… Ok, so, long story short my clone was the one that got my friend pregnant."

Fiora: "I have so many questions, but I'll let you vent."

Ness: "Thank you. Um, where was I?"

Fiora: "Your clone got your best friend pregnant."

Ness: "Right. I've tried to convince her to get an abortion."

Fiora: "Yikes."

Ness: "My clone left and because of that she's hurt. She's definitely not ready to be a mom. Besides, I think she expects me to father the child when it's not mine, but I mean technically it is since it's my DNA. Wow, that sounded crazy."

Fiora: "Very much so, but go on."

Ness: "At first she didn't like me, but now we're ok. I don't want to bring up the abortion because I'm afraid she'll ignore me again, meaning she'll definitely keep the kid."

Fiora: "I see what you're trying to do."

Ness: "Yeah, I'm trying to get on her good side so that it'll be easier to convince her later, but time is ticking."

Fiora: "Is her belly getting big?"

Ness: "Not really, but kinda."

Fiora: "This is… Wow. A lot. I'm so sorry."

Ness: "I'm really stressed out about it because if she births the kid, I'm going to help."

Fiora: "You don't have to. It's not yours."

Ness: "It's not my choice. I'm going to do it whether I like it or not. It's just who I am."

Fiora: "Ah, I see. You're a good person."

Ness looked at her jacket pocket which was holding Lucky's Pokeball.

Ness: "No I'm not."

Fiora: "You seem like you are."

Ness: "I… I abandoned Lucky. I did it because he doesn't listen to me and I couldn't take it anymore. He acts like... A child."

Fiora: "His behavior reminded you of your potential future of being a father?"

Ness: "Yeah..."

Fiora: "That makes sense now."

Ness: "I'm not ready to be a dad. I didn't ask for this."

Fiora: "Pokemon aren't the same."

Ness: "I know… I bottled up my emotions and made a rash decision."

Fiora: "Do you want to retry?"

Ness: "What do you mean?"

Fiora handed him Lucky's Pokeball.

Fiora: "This Espeon really loves you. I have a bad habit of taking in cute creatures. I already have all the Eeveelutions besides an Espeon."

Ness: "No wonder why you didn't want to give up Lucky."

Fiora: "I like to collect. It's a problem. Ahaha!"

Ness: "I feel that."

Fiora: "You can turn this around."

Ness: "What if I'm not ready?"

Fiora: "I think you need to have that talk with your friend. That's what's breaking your bond with Lucky."

Ness: "I think so too."

Fiora: "I know you can be a better trainer with the right mind-set."

Ness: "You think?"

Fiora: "Absolutely."

He grabbed the Pokeball and shoved it in his rucksack.

Ness: "Thank you for letting me vent, Fiora."

Fiora: "Of course. We all need a stranger to vent to from time to time."

Ness: "Thanks!"

Fiora: "Anyway, good luck. I hope we cross paths one day, but if not, it was nice meeting you."

Ness: "The feeling is mutual."

They shook hands and Fiora left. Ness stood up from his seat and walked all the way back home. When he arrived, he sent out Lucky.

The poor Espeon cowered in fear for a second until he met his eyes with his trainer. Lucky immediately jumped on him and started licking his face.

Lucky: "Espiii!"

He sat down on the carpet floor and held Lucky tight. For once in his life, he didn't fight the tears and allowed himself to cry.

Ness: "I… *Sobs* I'm sorry, Lucky. I'm so *hick* s-sorry."

Lucky: "Espeon." (I'm sorry too.)

Ness: "I'm just dealing with a lot and I took it out on you. I'm sorry for *sniffs* abandoning you."

Lucky: "Espii."

Ness: "I promise I won't do it again. I love you."

Lucky: "Espii." (I love you too.)

The two sat there holding each other for a long time until Lucky's stomach growled.

Ness: "Oh! You're hungry, huh?"

Lucky: "Espii!"

Lucky hopped off and started doing happy spins. Ness fed his Pokemon wet food. After Lucky was done eating, the two headed over to Lucas's.

Knock!

Lucas's eyes widened when he saw Ness AND Lucky.

Lucas: "You didn't get rid of him!"

Ness: "I couldn't."

Lucas: "I'm so proud of you."

Ness: "Thanks."

Lucky: "Espii!"

Ness: "Haha! Want to go on a walk?"

Lucas: "Yes!"

Lucas put on a jacket and the three of them went outside and walked around.

Lucas: "Are you still entering the contest?"

Ness: "Yeah, and I'm planning on winning too!"

Lucas: "Eeeee! I'll definitely be there to cheer you two on."

Ness: "Thanks, Lucas. I don't know what I'd do without my cheerleader."

Lucas: "I'm gonna wear the outfit and scream your name."

Ness: "Please don't."

Lucas: "Hahaha!"

Ness: "You're an idiot."

Lucas: "You know you love me."

Ness: "Not if you embarrass me on purpose."

Lucas: "But it'd be so funny."

Ness: "Not to me hahaha!"

Lucas: "Then why're you laughing?"

Ness: *Snickers* "Shut up."

Lucas: "Hahaha!"

After their walk, the two said their goodbyes and went back to their rooms. Ness did his daily bedtime routine. Once he plopped onto bed, Lucky hopped on and laid next to him.

He took out his phone and noticed he had several messages.

Tears streamed down his face. If he'd gone with it, Lucky wouldn't be here cuddling with him right now. He looked over at Lucky and planted a kiss on the Espeon's forehead.

Lucas: I'm happy you didn't get rid of him
