DCDGojira: Happy to see you enjoy many fanfics. Those three stories are lucky to have your support.
Austin: Your comment never failed to impress me. There are some thoughts of mine to make sure other benders and non-benders could have some sort of upper hand against the Unknown. Whether the benders are masters of their respective elements or some form of rules and rituals that you had mention. That's for the story to show that the people of that world are not entirely helpless against the kaijin like many other stories. Anyway, thank you for your time to leave a comment.
GokaiSilver3511: Yes, they will appear but I'm saving them for each book of the series. Like the original Kamen Rider Agito, they will appear as a villain or anti-hero in the beginning. I hope that doesn't count as a spoiler. If it is, I'm sorry.
LegionnaireBlaze: The extent of his bending will be explain soon.
Raximus: Like I mention before, yes. How am I going to do it? Still in my thoughts.
BOOK 1 CHAPTER 3: Before the Storm Hits
[AIR TEMPLE ISLAND, NIGHT TIME]
"Tea Talah?"
Pema offered the hot drink to Talah and Bilan, who sat at the dining table. Talah either ignored Pema or didn't hear her entirely. She had her eyes fixed on a closed door in the hallway where her son and Tenzin had gone into.
Bilan smiled and nodded at the women serving them tea. "Thank you Pema." He slide the cup towards him and Talah and he took a sip. He looked at his wife that still was motionless.
"Talah. Shen will be alright. Drink some tea. It's good."
Talah blinked at looked around the empty table. She met Pema's eyes and the woman smiled at her. Her eyes met her husband's next and it was the most soothing thing she saw that night.
"How are you so calm when our boy is…is…"
"Talah. Whatever you saw tonight doesn't change the fact, Shen is Shen. Nothing had change and nothing will. He's still our son."
"You haven't seen it Bilan. You would act the same if you saw it too."
"Probably." This time Pema joined in. "But, Talah, I would know that Tenzin would not have agreed to check up on Shen if he thinks that the power Shen possess are evil."
The door opened and the two male walked out. Talah jumped onto her feet and embraced her son. "Shen. Are you alright? Are you hurt somewhere? How are you feeling?"
"Mother. I'm fine. I feel great. Nothing's wrong."
"You expect me to believe that after what I saw? Did you about this beforehand? What was that weird word you said before that light flashes?"
"Ahem." Tenzin cleared his throat. "Worry not Talah, I will get to the bottom of this. If we all sit down, I could tell you my findings. Before we do that. Korra, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo. Get in here and sit down."
The slide door opened up and revealed Korra and the three airbenders children.
Korra smiled nervously before gave a small wave. "How's everybody doing tonight?"
Pema and Bilan giggled at the Avatar. Pema poured some more tea into other cups that she brought along. Somehow, knowing that Korra and her kids will interrupt them.
"Mommy, could I some soup too?" Asked a happy Ikki.
"Sure. Not too much. It's almost bed time." Pema obliged as she motion to one of the acolytes to bring some.
"Good evening Avatar Korra. We meet again." Shen greeted her with a smile. Korra stared at him and smiled awkwardly. Not knowing how to act around him at that point.
"Evening Agit…Shen. I mean, Good evening Shen." Korra passed him in a hurry and sat near the kids.
Tenzin rolled his eyes and quickly sat down at the front of the table, with Korra, his children and Pema on his right while Shen and his parents sat on his left.
"Now, it was a strange night to say the least. In truth, it's been a strange few days. Anti-Bending Revolution, evil spirits and now, what did you called it Shen?"
"Agito sir."
"Yes. Now Agito. Something we never see or encounter before, and I thought at my age I saw everything."
"What could you tell us about this Agito?" Talah asked him.
"Not much I'm afraid. Why don't Shen start?"
"Me?"
"Of course. You're the user after all. Tell us everything you know. Don't hold back. There's nothing to be afraid of."
Shen crossed his arms and closed his eyes. He thought deep and hard. "Hmmmm…Sorry. I got nothing."
Everyone minus Tenzin laughed or at the very least giggled at him. Especially those who know how Shen operates.
"You must know something." Tenzin pressed him on.
"I don't know what to say. It all happened a while ago. A few nights before Korra came to the city."
Talah remembered something, "Didn't you have a massive headache at one point? The night the detective brought you home after you passed out."
"Yes. That's the first something like that had happened. After I passed out, I don't remember much of anything."
"Are you sure it's not just a normal headache?" Korra asked him this time.
"Can't really say, but I'm sure that's anything but normal. It came all of sudden and I also heard the same shimmering sound in my head. The same sound the belt makes."
"Belt?" Bilan asked.
Talah turned to her husband. "Before Shen transformed, a belt appeared. A shimmering sound emitted from it."
Everyone was quiet and don't how to respond. Tenzin sipped his tea and cleared his throat. "Whatever that belt's or armor's origins may be, I don't think it is malice. I don't feel any malice spiritual energy from him."
"Could you explain more Tenzin?" Korra asked.
"While I was examining him, I felt an unusually high amount of spiritual energy for someone that never had any form of spiritual training. Am I right Shen?"
"Yeah. As much we believed in spirits, mother and father were never too focus on it. We mostly let things ran their course."
Tenzin nodded, "But, something is a bit off. The amount might be high and it spread across your entire body like any spiritual energy should, but I also sense a part of your body where there's a slightly higher concentration of spiritual energy. But sadly I cannot pin point its exact location."
Shen nodded in understanding, "I understand. It's like a gas leak then?"
"I'm sorry, what?" Tenzin stared at him in confusion.
"A gas leak. You know there's a gas leak but you can't pin point it where it's coming from, especially if you have more than one stove. Happens all the time at the restaurant. If that's anything to go by, we need to be very careful in order to find the source."
Tenzin blinked and said nothing. A snickered was heard and they turned to Korra that was trying her best to hold in her laughter. The Avatar clamped a hand over her mouth and another one on her stomach. She planted her face onto the table and her entire body vibrated from containing the laughter.
Shen turned to Tenzin, "Did I say something wrong?"
Ikki shook her head, "No. You just tickled her funny bone. Which is a weird one to begin with. She found weird stuff like that hilarious. I'm Ikki by the way."
"I'm Meelo. This world's gretest Airbender."
Shen was impressed by the kid's display of confidence. "Really? That's amazing."
"I'm Jinora." She blatantly introduced herself.
Shen smiled at the three, "I'm Shen Xiang. Nice to meet you."
"Can we keep him daddy?" Ikki immediately asked her dad. Tenzin almost spat out his tea,
"Ik…Ikki. You don't asked like he's some kind of pet."
Talah nudged Shen, "So, what will you do know?"
"Now? Nothing. Continue on with our lives and try to stop the spirits whenever they showed up."
"You seriously want to get involved in this matter? I saw what happened tonight. You almost died Shen." Talah argued. "You're…"
"…the only one that could stopped those things mother. Until we find an alternative, I'm not going to stop. Even there's an alternative, I'm not going to stand around. I got this gift, I should use it."
"Tenzin, Avatar Korra. Please put some sense into my son."
Tenzin and Korra put down their tea and began to sweat. They turned to each other before picked up their cups and took a long and loud sip. Talah groaned as she could figure out want the two were thinking.
"Even you two?"
"Mother. I can do this. I know it's dangerous but I got to do my part for the city."
"Talah. Please listen to our son. He's not a child anymore." Bilan gently placed a hand on his wife's shoulder.
"I'm not going to talk you out of this huh?"
Shen shrugged his shoulders and smiled at her, "Sorry mother. I don't think you could this time."
Korra suddenly stood up and point an accusing figure at Shen. "Alright. Cough it up."
"Cough it up? My throat is fine Avatar Korra."
"Not that. Your secrets."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have a secret stash of chocolate bars under my bed."
"You what?" Talah asked in surprised.
"Not that either. Your secret about being an airbender."
Everyone turned to Shen and he immediately felt the pressure of eight pair of eyes on him. He responded the only way he know how. "I don't what you're talking about."
"Korra. Stop this accusation. Clearly it was the ability came along with the armor, so, I wouldn't properly call it 'bending'. Despite technically he could. But, a very unorthodox way. My head hurts." Tenzin proceed to rub his head as Pema sat next to him.
Pema turned to Shen, "Well, like Tenzin said, your ability is not something to worry about. Since you could transform on your own will and gain full control, it seemed you have everything's under control. I wouldn't worry too much."
Bilan smiled, "Thank you Tenzin. It's getting late. We should head home."
They all shook hands and Shen approached Korra.
"I hope we could fight alongside each other again Avatar Korra. I'm glad to have you as an ally."
As they shook hand, Korra pulled Shen closer and whispered into his ear. "Could you come to the Pro-Bending Arena tomorrow at 8? I need to talk to you about something."
"Sure. I'll be there."
"Korra. Stop hogging the cute guy." Ikki said as she appeared in the middle of the two. Korra pushed Ikki into Shen and stormed out of the room. Ikki looked up to Shen and smiled.
"She likes you."
Shen smiled back, "I like her too. She's a great Avatar and a nice person."
Shen left with his parents as Ikki shook her head at Shen's obliviousness, "Boys will be boys."
The next morning, Shen went to see Korra as promised. He had brought four doggie bags filled with breakfast with him, courtesy of his mother. He showed a small card, he received from Korra, to be allowed to enter the gym to the guards and make his way there.
As he walked down the hallway, he met Mako. He looked off and disturbed.
"Hey Shen." Mako greeted him, showing off a weak smile. Trying his best to hide any form of problems. "Hey, about that money we owed you. I still need some more time. Something's had come up and…."
"Mako. It's fine. Don't worry about it. Take your time. Are you off to somewhere?"
"Yeah. Somewhere. I need to go."
"Wait. Take this. It's from my mother. Athletes need a balance and nutritious breakfast, am I right?"
Mako took the bag and opened it. He smiled what he saw inside. The bag contained a few sandwiches, orange and apple slices and a carton of juice and milk.
"Thank you. I best get going. Tell your mother I said thanks."
With that Mako went off. Shen arrived to the gym to see Korra was waiting for him. She sat on one of the training mats and swayed her head side to side, humming a tune.
"I hope I'm not too late, Avatar Korra."
Korra smiled and stood up. "Nope. You're on time. Shall we get going?"
The two walked to the nearest park and sat on bench. Shen handed her bag and she wolfed it down in an instant. Not enough, she took Bolin's share as well, since the guy had ran off before Shen got to the gym.
Shen ate his' and finished at the same time as Korra. "So, what is it you want to talk about?"
Korra cleaned her fingers and look at Shen. "Oh. I haven't properly thought about that."
"Hey. That's alright. We don't need to make this a questioning. Let's get to know each other better."
Korra beamed as a major stressed were off her chest, "Sure. I'll start. Where were you're born?"
"Omashu. My mom gave birth to me when they visited my dad's family. They just wanted to visit for two weeks but I changed the plan. We stayed there for an extra two months before coming back here. You?"
"Southern Water Tribe. In my small village and in my own home. Discovered my Avatar status when I was four."
"That's very young. You're not scared or worried of the responsibility?"
"Nope. I feel like I could do anything at that point. I felt like I'm number one."
"So you're been training ever since?"
"Yup. I need to stay in the compound all my life. Don't get me wrong. They have everything in there. All the entertainment, books and scrolls and all the food I could possibly ask for."
"But, you couldn't leave."
"Sure, that. I'm allowed to get out and walked Naga but that's about it."
They sat in silence for a few minutes. Couldn't believe the conversation had took a depression turn. Korra turned to Shen.
"Oh, I wanted to ask you something. How come your armor was blue last night?"
"Oh that. I used a different form. Storm Form."
"Storm Form?"
"That's just what I called it since I could use the power of the wind. I could generate a massive storm if I wanted to but that won't end well for all of us if I did it in the arena last night."
"Man. I'm so jealous. I'm the Avatar and couldn't make a teeny weeny little puff of air. You're seemed like a natural." Korra get in and close to Shen's face. "Tell me your secrets."
Shen laughed and pushed Korra away from him. "I told you Avatar Korra. There's no secret. Sure, I could use the power of wind but even I can't explain it. Too tell you the truth, I can't bend."
"So you can only bend while wearing your armor? That's kind of sucks."
"Yup, kind of but not entirely. While unarmored, I still could feel their powers sipping through me. I still couldn't bend though. Example, my default form, Ground Form harnessed the power of the earth. Hardness, stability and toughness. I still feel its power and strength. I kicked an earth pillar a few days ago while unarmored. It gave the people quite the shock.
"What about you're Storm Form?"
"It gave me a slight speed boost. I realized this when I managed to get the form to work at its fullest potential. I felt faster and more nimble. I dashed around the restaurant, taking and delivering orders like crazy. I think my mother might give me a raise."
"That's amazing."
"Well. That's only a thing when I'm not transforming. If I transform into, let's say, the Ground Form. My strength and toughness my doubled or tripled but I will lose the small speed boost. I need to change forms if I want it, but that's more depend on the situation."
"Is there any other forms? Surely that can't be it?"
"There is one other form. Flame Form."
Korra smiled, "Let me guess. Fire."
"Yup. In that form, I'm stronger and hit harder, but man I'm slow. Faster than normal people but slower in comparison to my other forms. While untransformed, Flame Form give me a slight increase resistance to heat."
"Could you bend fire in the form?"
"Sure I can, but I don't really like it. Fire's dangerous and I don't really want to accidently hurt anyone I shouldn't."
Korra gave him a playful slap on the arm and stood up, "That's not going to happen if you're careful. Hey, I could teach you. I'm a good Firebender. Let's head to Air Temple Island and I'll train you."
Shen smirked at the Avatar, "Thank you for the offer. But, don't you have airbending training?"
Korra groaned and slumped her body backwards in frustration, "Arghhhh. I'm not getting anywhere with airbending. You know, I had been training and meditating non-stop but nothing. Pfft. No airbending."
"Avatar Korra, you can't expect results right away. The other elements might be easy to master but if the same tactics not working, you might want to try something else."
"Like what? I tried everything."
"There's no way you could convince me that you tried everything."
Korra threw her hands in the air, "Maybe not literally. But close enough. Even Tenzin's running out of ideas. He keeps telling me to calm down and relax."
Shen raised a brow, "Did you?"
"How can I? How can I relax when my efforts are fruitless?!"
"Avatar Korra, please calm down. You know that's not what we meant."
"Don't you tell me to calm down!"
Shen stood up and placed his hands on Korra's shoulders. "Hey. Take it easy. There's no rush. At where you're standing. Three elements at 17? Other Avatars would do anything to be at your level Avatar Korra. There's no need to rush. You can do this. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but you will."
"I guess you're right. Thanks Shen."
"You're welcome Korra."
Shen slapped his mouth and Korra raised a finger. "Did you just…"
Shen shook his head and turned around. Korra smirked. "You did. You just did."
"No I didn't. You misheard me."
Korra walked around to face him but Shen turned away again. "You called me Korra. Score one for the Avatar. Wohoo!"
Shen shook his head and smiled at Korra's little victory dance.
Korra finished her little dance and looked at Shen. "You know. I'm glad it's you. I might jinx it, but I wouldn't rather have anyone else as Agito than you."
"Jinx it?"
"Well, we haven't know each other that long. But, you seem like a nice guy. Unlike Mako."
"What's wrong with Mako?"
"He's the worst. He's mean and very arrogant. I can't stand him. Just because he's got more experience and know more about Pro-Bending than me, doesn't mean he could be Mr. Uptight. I can't stand him since the first time I saw him. He can't sleep, I can't eat, I can't train even more than usual and definitely can't be in the same room as him. Every time he's in the same room, I feel this heat coming out of nowhere and filled my entire body. I swear he put some sort of curse on me Shen."
Shen titled his head and blinked a few times. He placed a finger under his chin and though hard.
"So, you have a crush on Mako?"
Korra immediately got into a defensive position by raising her arms as if Shen might attack her at any moment.
"Whoa there mister. Who's said anything about a crush?"
"You did."
"I did not!"
"Avatar Korra, what you just mentioned was basically the start of a crush. It might be weird especially the way you describe it but believe me. It's a crush."
"No. No. Nooooo. It can't be. Tell me how to get rid of it. I can't believe this is happening."
"I can't believe this conversation turning into me giving you love advice."
"Shen!"
"Look, I'm sorry. There's nothing to be done. Just continue on. See whether the feelings wavered or strengthens. That's how things are."
Korra sighed and slumped her body. Shen slowly and carefully patted her back. "There-there. It's not as bad as some people say."
"There you are Korra." An angry Tenzin walked over to them. "Shen? Why are you here?"
"Good afternoon Councilman Tenzin."
"Good afternoon to you as well. What are you two doing here?"
Korra looked up to Tenzin, "We just stopped by here to chat a little. We will be working together and thought it will be a good idea to get to know each other a little bit."
"Hmm. That's makes sense. But, that doesn't make it okay to skip your airbending training Korra. You already fifteen minutes late."
"Sorry"
"Time to go. See you later Shen. Stop by at the Air Temple Island if you need advice or discussion on anything. I promised your parents that I'll be looking after you as well should you need any guidance."
Shen smiled, "Thank you. Does that mean I can call you Uncle Tenzin now?"
"No." Tenzin flatly shot Shen's request down.
After seeing them off, Shen walked home. As he was walking, he thought the prospect and potential of Korra and Mako being together.
"Mako and Korra are basically the same personality wise. They both a bit hot-headed and strong willed individual. They might destroy their house though, if they fight. But they both have their soft side, I think. They're elements are different though. But, I guess that's what people call 'opposite attracts'."
Shen arrived at the restaurant and greeted by a familiar face.
"Welcome…sir?"
Shen was greeted by Mako in a waiter uniform. He was holding a notepad and pencil. They stared at each other before Mako collect his bearings. "Welcome sir to Xiang's Delight. How many?"
"Mako? What are you doing here?"
"I worked here. Part time at least. There's an opening, so I took it. Dine in or take outs?"
"I'm not a customer. I lived here."
Mako slapped his face out of embarrassment and Shen just laughed. "I'll be going back to work now."
He walked into the restaurant towards the counter, where Talah handling the register.
"Welcome back Shen. Seemed that you met our mutual acquaintance."
"Yup. Nice of you to hired him for part time. I never knew we had an opening."
Talah giggled, "No. We don't. I saw him wandered to every establishment in this row looking for a job, so I gave him one. Luckily, you were out and one of the other waiters called in sick. At least, we seemed like understaff."
"I'll go helped him then." Shen went to change into his own waiter uniform and joined Mako on the dining floor.
By evening, Mako was done with his shift. He walked to the counter and Talah handed him the envelope with his money. "Thank you for your hard work. Come by again if you need more work. There's always something needs doing."
"Thank you. I better be off. Thanks again. Where's Shen?"
"He's off running some errand."
Mako left and took a quick peeked into the envelope. His eyes widen at the amount of money in it. It was almost a quarter what they needed for the tournament. He thought that Talah might gave him the wrong amount but he pulled out a piece of paper. A note.
Take it. I hope to see you around. Please look after Shen. He never had much friends until you came along. I'm glad to see him so happy.
Talah
Mako smiled and pocketed the envelope.
"You're a lucky guy Shen."
Detective Yaozun sat in his car as he scribbled notes in his notebook. He wrote his next step but paused and hovered above the written name of Agito. He wrote down a question mark beside it and closed the notebook.
After safely placed it away he was about to start the engine when he saw Shen walked alone on the sidewalk. He looked like he was in a trance as his face had a blank expression.
The detective stuck out his head out of the window. "It is not safe to wonder while walking."
"Detective?"
Minutes later, Shen was in the detective's car as the detective drove. "How's things going for you? It felt like we ran into each other a lot since that night."
"Yeah." Shen continue to look out of the window. "Things are normal so far. How's the thing goes with the evil spirits?"
"As much I'm not allowed to discuss it with a civilian but there's literally no one that share my curiosity on the matter. Almost every member of the force focus on the Equalist. Now when you think about it, the Chief probably send me on this mission to keep me out of her hair."
"Don't put yourself down detective. You're doing a great job. So far, whenever one of those spirits appeared, you seem to be able to get there on time to help."
Yaozun smiled at the compliment, "Thanks. So, where are you headed?"
"Oh, I'm just going home. I was delivering an order for a long time customer."
"Well, we should get you home. It's already dark. It's not safe to be out this late at the moment."
The car they were riding came to a junction. From the right, out of nowhere, a white figure landed in front of them, blocking their path. The detective slammed on the breaks before they hit it. They looked out of the windshield and surprised to see a polar bear dog and a fire ferret making eye contact with them. The polar bear dog let out a few panic bark and motion its head towards to where it just came from.
"What is this animal doing here?" Yaozun asked.
"Wait detective. This is Avatar Korra's companion." Shen get out of the car and proceed to walk towards it. "Naga. What are you doing out here by yourself? Where's Avatar Korra?"
Naga barked a few more times before biting on Shen's clothes and tossed him onto her back. After the boy was secured, she dashed back to where she came from.
"Naga! Slow down." Shen tried to hold on to the saddle as the small fire ferret hold on to his collar. The detective immediately pressed the pedal and followed them.
They came across to a back alley and saw four figure. Two of them were Avatar Korra and Mako. They looked like they were on the losing end as Korra held her arm. The two other figure were two people in a full body suit and masks.
Shen gritted his teeth and he summoned the Altering.
"Henshin."
He slammed the two side of the belt as Naga jumped in between her master and the assaulters. The white light blinded them and as it died down, they saw Agito mounted on Naga.
"Shen!"
"That's Shen?" Mako asked in surprised.
Agito jumped off Naga and get ready in position. The two Equalist members get ready as well. The two circled around Agito, planning to take him on by surprised. One rushed in and went for punch. Agito dodged and hit on his back with his elbow before ducking under a kick by the second member.
Agito grabbed the foot as the second one and threw him into his friend. They got up once more and re-coordinate. Agito hit the left side of the belt and his armor change to blue.
"That armor again." Mako murmured.
Agito Storm pulled out the contracted Storm Halberd and held it threateningly at the Equalist members. They stared at each other before Agito gave them a slight nod, as if he's daring them to attack.
The two wasted no time as rushed in once more. Agito effortlessly maneuvered and blocked their attacks even without using the Storm Halberd properly. To make things more ridiculous, he used a gust of wind to make them lose their balance and pushed them away. Agito jumped and summersault into the air as both Equalist went for a leg sweep. He landed in a crouching position between the two and he extended the Storm Halberd.
He predicted the two would attack and his prediction was spot on. He swung his weapon in a circle and unleashed a cyclone that blasted both Equalist against the wall of two opposite buildings.
"Pfft. Show off." Korra said with a smirk.
The two Equalist looked at each other and nodded. They were getting ready for another round but the sound of a vehicle stopped behind them surprised them. They saw Yaozun exited his vehicles and getting ready into a bending position.
"Give yourself up. It's over Equalist."
Seeing the police had arrived, Mako bravely get to the frontline as well.
Seeing they were outnumbered and could get overpowered, they pulled out a canister and threw it onto the ground, releasing a large amount of green gas. They took this chance to escape. Agito used his wind powers to clear the gas and saw the two were already gone.
"They got away." Agito muttered as Detective Yaozun approached him. They make eyes contact and Agito tried to act like a total stranger.
"Oh. Detective. What a coincidence."
"Drop the act Shen. I know it's you."
Korra immediately came between them, "Shen? Where? I don't see any Shen. You must be hallucinating Detective."
Agito pulled Korra away. "It's okay Avatar Korra. It is better he know the truth."
"Oh. Okay."
Agito's belt undone the transformation and Shen stood there in a nervous state.
"How did you know?"
"Well, a polar bear dog kidnapped a guy and ran here. The animal is there but the guys was not. In his stead was the armored fighter. It doesn't take a genius to put two and two together."
"Are you mad?"
Yaozun rubbed the back of his head, "Mad? Well, not really. Shocked? A little bit. Out of the people that could be Agito. You don't really fit the type. I'm not saying you're a bad person. Just…"
"Below expectation?"
Yaozun just shrugged his shoulders and Shen imitate it, leading to all of them to roar in laughter.
"What's going on here? Why were you two fighting the two Equalist members?" Yaozun asked Korra and Mako.
Mako came forward, "Detective, they got my brother. They have him in the back of their van with the members of the Triple Threat Triads."
"Now, that is a problem. As much we wanted to bring them down. Allowing the Equalist to do whatever they want would be only delivering the wrong message to the city. We'll handle it. Right now, I want all of you to return home immediately. Leave this to the police. Don't worry, we'll find your brother."
With that, Yaozun sped off towards the office while Shen, Korra and Mako stood there.
The warrior looked at the two benders, "We should go home now."
Mako looked at Shen with fire in his eyes. He walked up to him, grabbed him by the collar and lifted him off the ground. "Go home? Go home? My brother is missing! I'm not going to stop looking. As if I'm going to follow orders from the police that only care about their reputation than the people!"
"Mako! Put him down!" Korra pulled the firebender away as Shen flopped to the ground. Mako stomped away from them as Korra looked split between them.
"Go. Avatar Korra. He needs support more than ever. Go."
Korra nodded and follow Mako with Naga. Shen straighten his shirt and brushed the dust of his pants. "I should apologize the next time I see him."
ZHING!
A flash of images appeared in Shen's mind. An Unknown with a dog's head currently running in the street, chasing after a van. Another flash showed the content of the van was a group of man tied up. One of them was Bolin.
"Bolin!"
Shen ran towards the main street. He knew he need to find a way to pursue after it but he had no one to turn to right now. A speeding car stopped beside him and Detective Yaozun poke his head out.
"Good thing you're still here. The spirits showed up. Ready to fight that thing Agito?"
Shen nodded with confident before entering the car. The detective sped towards the reported area. In no time flat, they manage to catch up to it near the waterfront and with the Unknown right in their sight. The detective tried to keep a nice pace and not to crash into other cars.
"Be careful Shen."
"Understood."
Shen crawled out of window and summoned the Altering. As the shimmering was heard, the Jackal Unknown turned around and surprised to see who it was.
"Henshin."
Shen jumped towards it and hit the two button on the side of his waist. Agito, in his full armor, tackled the Unknown and the two rolled on the busy street. They rolled to the edge, avoiding high speed cars while at it.
Agito kicked the Unknown into a parked car and it was utterly destroyed upon impact. The warrior wasted no time and began heavy pounding the enemy. The unknown avoid a punch, grabbed Agito by the throat and threw him through the windshield and exited at the back.
It came for Agito but the warrior lifted his legs and kicked the Unknown right in his dog muzzle. As it groaned in pain, another punch arrived in the stomach, chest and a double elbow bash to the face.
Agito managed to get the upper hand and the Jackal Unknown was weakened by the barrage of onslaught. Agito threw it to the railings that separated them from the vast body of water down below. It began to panic at the sight of Agito walking towards him.
Getting ready for the finisher, Agito suddenly heard a splash of water. Out of the blue, another Unknown jumped out of the water and knocked the warrior off his feet. The second unknown was an Orca Unknown and it managed to get the jump on him.
Detective Yaozun stopped his car nearby and get ready to help. "Hold on Shen!"
The Orca saw the detective coming and with a waved of its hand, a gust of water sprayed towards him. The detective put his fist together and send a torrent of fire at it in retaliation. His fire evaporated the water immediately and it hit the Orca Unknown directly.
"Nice one detective."
Agito got up and took the opening the firebender gave him. Yaozun saw the Jackal Unknown tried to escape. He took the chance to stop it. The Unknown saw the barrage of fireballs heading its way and quickly conjured a lance, easily blocking and dispersed the attack.
It kicked Yaozun in the chest and brought down the tip of the weapon towards him. Inches before the sharp end met the flesh, Agito came in and used his left hand to grab the weapon from lunging straight through the detective. The Orca Unknown went for a kick but it was blocked by Agito's right hand.
"Are you alright detective?"
"Care more for yourself."
Locked in between the two Unknown and the detective on his back, Agito need to find a way to get out of this situation. His prayers had been answered as Yaozun blasted the Jackal Unknown away while Agito threw the Orca Unknown over his shoulder, over the railings and into the bay.
"Thanks for the save Shen."
"No problem. Where's the other one?"
Distracted by the lack of the land Unknown, the water theme one bursts out of the water and hugged Agito from behind and pulled him into the depths of the bay.
"Shen!" Yaozun called out to him but his eyes caught the glimpse of the Jackal Unknown on a nearby rooftop. Holding its side from the pain, it snickered before shot off onto the rooftop of nearby buildings, out of view in seconds.
"No!"
Yaozun leaned over the railings to see any signs of movement but there were none.
"Shen!"
Agito struggled as he was being strangled by the Orca Unknowm. Being taken by surprise by the second time was not what he had in mind. They were getting deeper and deeper into the bay and he began having trouble breathing.
Yaozun saw no signs of the two will be raising anytime soon. He took off his jacket to jump in after them. He was taking off his shoes when a large explosion erupted and a gigantic waterspout appeared in the middle of the bay.
This startled the detective even the passerby that had been there since the beginning.
"Spirits! What is happening?"
In the middle of the waterspout, trapped in it without its consent was the Orca Unknown, spinning round and round. Another smaller waterspout appeared behind it with Agito in Storm Form standing on top of it.
SHING!
With his golden horns split open, he readied himself. With a powerful leap, he jumped right through the giant whirlwind and destroyed the Orca Unknown. The bigger waterspout fell apart and the water from the bay rained on all the buildings, street and everyone nearby as Agito made a clean landing right beside Yaozun.
The detective was speechless as he witness it and Agito turned to him.
Seeing the detective had removed his jacket and shoes, he knew what he was about to do.
"Glad I stopped you from coming after me detective. The water is freezing cold. Trust me when I say, you don't want to go in there."
The detective said nothing but just picked up his clothes. He walked to his car and entered it. Looking back at Shen, he called out to him.
"What are you waiting for? Let's go get you home."
As he was driving, he tried to initiate small talk.
"Shen. Listen. I'm still in surprise about finding out you're Agito but I want you to know that I'm glad that you willing to put yourself in harm's way to help the city. I broke a lot of protocol of allowing a civilian getting into police business, but again, this hardly counts in the record books."
"Don't worry detective. I'll be careful if that's what you're worried about. Are you going to turn me in?"
"No. I don't think the chief even cares. As long you don't go around beating people up, we're good."
"One more thing detective."
"Yeah?"
Shen bit his lips and felt guilty for doing this.
"I don't think Mako and Avatar Korra will let this slide. They will try and figure out a way to save Bolin with or without the police."
"I thought as much."
"Sorry?"
"I may be new but I've seen a lot of people like him. I won't blame him. The moment I looked into his eyes, I knew he have a huge distrust for the authority and like I said, I don't blame him. Some of them only do it to boost their own ego, gain favors for their greedy agenda and ignore the people."
"How about you detective?"
"You'll probably expect me to say something cliché like 'I'm different' and all that, but, I don't know. I'll let you and my actions judge my character. As for now, I promised to help in any way I can."
The detective dropped Shen back home. As he sped away, he could hear the boy's mother loud cry. He drove for a few minutes and came towards the park once more. He parked his car and popped open a nice hot cup of steaming coffee he bought a few minutes ago at a small coffee shop.
"What am I going to do now?"
After having his coffee, he went to throw it away but saw a large figure slumped at a nearby tree. As he went closer, he heard a male voice.
"If anything happen to him. I don't know what I'll do."
Yaozun saw the owner of the voice and his companion. He smiled and shook his head at the two kids.
The detective made himself known. "I admired your protectiveness of your brother. I wished I have a brother like you myself."
Yaozun's sudden appearance caught Mako and Korra off guard and the two jumped from their sitting position.
"De…De…Detective." Korra stuttered. "What a coincidence. What are you doing here? We need to stop meeting like this."
"I could ask you two the same thing."
Mako frowned at him, "Look. I know why you're here, and no. I'm not going back. Not until I found my brother."
"Mako." Korra called out to him.
Yaozun sighed and crossed his arms, "Look here kid."
"No! YOU look here. I know I'm just a dumb kid and you're an 'adult' but I'm not stopping until I find Bolin. I don't care what you have to say, I'm not going anywhere. You can take you useless advice somewhere else."
"You really determine huh?"
"You have no idea, 'Detective." Mako answered mockingly.
Yaozun sighed once more and looked up into the sky. "Beautiful night huh?"
"A little bit cold though." Korra added and Naga barked in agreement.
"I know what will help."
A few minutes later, Yaozun returned with two hot cups of tea. He handed both to the two teens that was shocked at the detective's sudden generosity.
"I hope this will warm you two up."
Korra and Mako looked at each other before took a sip.
"Better you two?" Yaozun asked.
"Yeah." Mako admitted. "Look. I'm sorry for snapping at you. I didn't mean it. I prepare to do the time…"
Yaozun raised a hand and smiled. "No need to apologize. I knew you don't actually mean it. I admired your determination. So, you two could stay if you want. I was never here and we never had this conversation."
"Right." Korra sipped her drink again.
"But, before I leave. Promise me that you'll contact me if there's any development on your end and please don't do anything that could risk your lives. That's my job. I'll try my best to help in any way I can."
Korra nodded, "We could expect you to do the same?"
Yaozun raised a brow before nodded. He turned around and walked away without uttering a single word.
The next day once again passed in a blur with Shen. He helped at the restaurant all day but his mind was on his friends. To his delight, he received a phone call from the detective that evening. Since the phone was near the kitchen and the dining hall, he need to keep a low voice.
"What? You might figure out about an Equalist gathering?"
"Something like that. It came from Mako and Korra. I'm surprised they managed to uncover something. They told me that they got it from the back of a poster from an Equalist rally. If that's the case, it must be secret code or some kind."
"I'm more surprised those two contacted you. What happened?"
"We managed to clear the air a bit. Not much, but, enough to get him to trust me."
"Okay. My shift ends at 7."
"I picked you up then."
At seven, the detective picked him up as plan. They drove to the meeting spot but parked a distance to avoid anyone from the Equalist to notice them. They dressed in coats and a cap to hide their face. They saw the big building in the distance, with many people making their way towards it.
"What is this place?" Yaozun asked.
"An old industrial area." Shen answered. "Haven't been much use since the city build a better and more environmental friendly factories somewhere else like a decade ago. This place is too close to the water that it became extremely contaminated at one point."
"Psst. Detective. Over here."
They saw Korra and Mako dressed in a similar style to them. The grouped up to discuss more.
"You know. I'm bringing three civilians, teens no less to a top secret revolutionary meeting. I so getting fired for this." Yaozun joked.
"You mean one civilian teen alongside the Avatar and Agito." Korra joked along.
Shen laughed at the two as Mako get his attention.
"Look Shen. I want to apologize for my behavior last night. I don't mean to lash out at you like that. I'm just frustrated and worried about my brother. Could you forgive me?"
Shen rubbed his arm, "Sure. I also would want to apologize for not taking your feelings into consideration. Shouldn't take it as a light matter. So, forgive me?"
Mako and Shen proceed to shake each other's hand tightly and felt they are now better friends.
Yaozun looked at the building, "So, here's the plan…"
Korra pushed him aside, "Mako and I will go in and you two will stay on guard."
"Wait Avatar Korra…" Shen tried to hold her hand but it slipped out of his grasp.
"No objections? Good. Let's go Mako." Korra pulled Mako with her as Yaozun and Shen left speechless by the Avatar's rash and baseless plan.
"Well, we have no choice but to stay here and wait for their return." Yaozun slumped against the wall and pulled up his coat to his neck. He looked at Shen that currently stared emptily at the big structure where Korra and Mako had disappeared into.
"Shen, I know you're worried but we need to have faith and confidence. You won't be any good if you're not in the right state of mind if anything comes up."
"Right. Sorry detective."
They made small talk about the city and their lives before meeting each other. They ran out of topics after half an hour and Yaozun decided to ask the important question.
"So, this Agito power. How do you get it?"
Shen rest his back beside the detective. "Don't know. Tenzin couldn't find any explanation either but Pema said it couldn't be anything malice if I managed to control it in a short time after it awoken."
"I wouldn't look a gift Ostrich Horse in the mouth. As long you don't go around going rogue. It's fine by me."
"What about those spirits detective? What are they and where did they come from?"
The detective sighs and shook his head, "I don't know myself. Those things appeared and disappeared without a trace. I have no clue where their originated. What their goals are and is there any way an everyday bender to protect themselves. If this continue on, the Equalist might be using the spirits to their advantage."
"You think those spirits are working with the Equalist detective?"
"I can't say but the spirits are only attacking benders and who else want to kill off benders? The Equalist. Common enemy means common goal."
"Don't worry detective. You have Avatar Korra and me to back you up."
Yaozun cringed at the sentence and couldn't help himself, "Actually, it's 'Avatar Korra and I' Shen."
Shen crossed his arms, "'Avatar Korra and me' sounds just fine."
"No. It's the wrong way to say it. A common mistake."
The two argue about the sentence's grammar until a large explosion came from the building and people began pouring out of the building, screaming.
"Shen!"
Shen nodded and ran towards it, going against the sea of people. His summoned the Altering in a heartbeat.
"Henshin."
As he transformed into Agito, he dashed through corridor after corridor towards the sound of chaos. He entered a big hall where most of the people are and immediately an Equalist member landed in front of him. He tried to intimidate Agito with his weapons but Agito swiftly knocked him out with a kick to the head.
"Sorry. I don't like people showing off."
Agito looked at the front of the hall, a stage was present. On it was a few members of the Triple Threat Triads. On one end was Bolin, tied up and struggling to get free. Agito looked at the other end and saw him, Amon. Stood there menacingly.
Agito saw a figure rushed at Bolin and helped him up. It was Mako.
As the two brothers tried to escape, Amon raised his hands towards Mako.
"Mako look out! Behind you!"
Bolin's cried was a bit too late and Amon was inches away from the firebender. Agito jumped onto the stage and went for a kick but the leader of the Equalist dodged backwards and the two stared at each other. Waiting for their first move.
Amon was amused at his sudden appearance, "Agito. We meet at last. It broke my heart to see a non-bender traitor among us."
"How do you know I'm not a bender?"
"Come now. I know much more about you than you realize."
"This ends now Amon."
"On the contrary, this is just the beginning. Tell me Agito, Why are you helping these benders?"
"Because they've done nothing wrong. It's the bad benders that oppressed others, not these two. Many benders are nice and caring people. Should I punish the good non-benders for anything the bad ones did?"
Amon did not say anything but broke out into a chuckle.
"What's so funny?"
"Naïve little boy." Amon spoke and immediately rushed towards Agito.
"Guys run! I'll hold him off."
"You better be behind us Shen."
"Wait. That's Shen?" Bolin screamed as he being dragged away by Mako.
With that, the two broke into combat, Amon focused more on offensive while Agito focused on blocking. Amon may be going on the offensive but none of his attacks landed as Agito's defense were superb.
Agito grabbed Amon's foot and threw him across the room. As he was getting up, Agito went in with a flying kick and strike right in the chest. Amon stumbled further across the room but slowly got back up.
"Not bad…for a kid."
"Call this stupid revolution off."
"No can do."
They were ready to brawl again but a black figure sped in between them and knocked them both off their feet.
The Jackal Unknown growled at them and summoned its lance. It looked between Agito and Amon but surprisingly it sneered at Amon slightly a bit more.
"You dare defiled me monster?"
As Amon said that, the Unknown lashed out at him. Strike its lance towards the man's chest. Amon dodged but it wasn't enough. The lance was swung in an arc and almost slit Amon's throat if he hadn't moved at the last minute.
The Unknown went on a killing rampage as Agito watched.
"Why is it attacking Amon? A defective one or something?"
The Unknown slashed Amon's right leg and swung the lance toward the man's head. Amon blocked it but it wasn't enough. He was send crashing on the floor again and almost met his demise if not the Jackal Unknown was held back by Agito.
The warrior pulled the Unknown away from the room as Equalist began to pouring in.
The Lieutenant helped Amon up alongside another Equalist member.
"Amon, you're bleeding."
Amon looked at his right leg as sure it was. The blood dripped and create a small puddle on the floor.
"What happened?"
Amon looked at the door that the Agito escaped with the Unknown. "The Agito managed to hurt me. What of the Avatar?"
"She managed to escape with the two boys. What should we do Amon?"
"Let them. They would be the perfect messenger to tell the city of my power. From now on, the Agito is our enemy as well. Lieutenant?"
"Yes Amon?"
"How goes our little side project? We will be needing it soon."
"It is already in the testing phase. But, unfortunately…"
"What? Speak up Lieutenant."
"We got almost a hundred volunteers everyday but none of them managed to withstand more than fifteen minutes in it."
"Find someone that who can. Fast."
"Yes Amon"
The Jackal Unknown were thrown off the roof and landed on the ground. Agito jumped after it and the Unknown avoided it in time. The two wrestled and traded blows. As it trying to escape, Yaozun's car turned around the corner and slammed right into it.
As the Unknown groaned on the ground, Agito's horn split open. With a decent runway and mighty jump, his foot made contact with the back of the Unknown. The detective awed at the explosion as he exited his car.
"Thanks detective. You should ran into the spirits more often. Your car is very deadly."
"I rather have more involvement than that you know."
Shen smiled awkwardly as he entered the car. "Where's Avatar Korra and the others?"
"They are safe. They went home already. You can visit them in the morning. I'll contact the station and have men secured the area. Now it's involving the Equalist, maybe they will get off their lazy asses."
"Care to tell me again why you're late?" Talah had her arms cross and left foot tapping the floor.
"Mother. I told you. The detective need my help involving something important. I cannot not help him." Shen pleaded.
"Oh? So where is this detective? Why isn't he's here explaining why you're out so late on this mission?"
"He needs to return quickly to the station to file in a report. The council will need to know about this."
"Spirits. Why?" Talah rubbed her temple as Bilan put his arms on his wife's shoulders.
"Why don't you go up and rest now Talah? Shen and I will clean up and close up the restaurant."
"Yeah. Sounds good." With her weak legs and aching head, Talah slowly went up the stairs.
The two look at the number one woman in their lives disappeared into the top portion of the restaurant. Shen looked at his father and the older man just smiled.
"I'm really put mother under a lot of stress aren't I?"
"A little. She's just worried about you. You're our only son."
"But father…"
Shen didn't get to finish when Bilan raised his hand. Not in a 'Stop talking because I'm your father' kind of way but, 'Allow me to finish' kind of way.
"I'm scared and worry for you just as much as your mother do. If it's up to us, we would be on our way to Omashu by now. But now, you're destined for something great and who are we to get in the way. Just promise us you will be careful. I'll talk to your mother."
"Thanks father."
The next morning Korra was awoken to a knock on her door. Naga got up and barked at it but was calmed down by Korra.
"It's okay Naga. Nothing's going to hurt me."
She groggily go up and opened the door. Right there was a female air acolyte.
"Can I help you? My training wouldn't start for another few hours"
"Pardon me for disturbing you Avatar Korra but you have a guest."
"A guest? Who?"
"A young man name Shen Xiang."
"Shen?" In no time Korra dashed out of the room with Naga behind her. "Thank you!"
"He's at the training grounds!" The woman screamed out.
She ran to the training grounds where she saw him sat on flight a stairs to a storeroom. He was wearing his same green and yellow shirt but with black pants instead of white. He was talking with a group of female air acolyte. They were giggling and laughing at something Shen said and Korra picked it up as she got closer.
"Then she would just let me handle all the orders. I don't mind but I do expect to allow me to get a motorcycle license at the very least."
They all laughed but Shen saw Korra behind him.
"Avatar Korra." Shen smiled and walked over to her, disappointing the air acolyte as they returned to their chores.
Korra wasted no time but embraced Shen in warm and tight hug. Shen was taken back but wrapped his arms around her tightly himself.
Korra smiled as she hugged him. "Thank the spirits you're safe. I'm sorry for leaving you. There were so many of them and I need to make sure Mako and Bolin are safe…"
"Avatar Korra please." Shen let her go and smiled. "I'm glad to see you safe as well. I would have come to visit you last night but the detective said it wouldn't be a good idea. I hardly slept last night. I felt bad for making my parents worried and not coming to find you immediately."
Korra chuckled and playfully punched Shen on the arm. "Thank you for being there for us. Amon would come after us if you're not there."
"No problem. I'll do it many times over to help you guys."
"I can see the power of Agito have chosen the right person for the job."
Shen let out a hearty laugh, "I'll take that as a compliment, Avatar Korra."
The two smiled and looked at the view of the city. Korra decided to broke the peaceful silent.
"I wonder what's he's doing right now."
"Probably planning to hunt us down. We need to be careful. He will not stop at anything to bring us to our knees."
"Us?" Korra asked in confusion.
"I fought him last night. That's makes me a target. I'm a traitor to the non-benders."
"What? No. You're not a traitor." Korra said but Shen just looked at the city's outline in the distance. "Shen look at me."
Korra grabbed Shen's face and turned it facing her. His light brown eyes met her beautiful cyan ones. "You're not a traitor Shen Xiang. You're a peaceful and not extremist non-bender that only hate those who deserve it. You're not a crazy guy like Amon. That's makes you a magnitude better than him. Don't you forget it. Say you're a traitor again and I'll…"
"You'll what?"
"I'll let Naga kiss you."
"You wouldn't dare."
Korra raised a hand to her mouth with smug grin. Shen realized that she's was serious and he went down onto his knees.
"I'm sorry. I promise to never say it ever again. Call off your polar bear dog." Shen begged.
Korra's smug grin only getting larger. "That's a good boy. Oh, since you're already here. Let's me teach you how to firebend."
"Avatar Korra. I told you before, I cannot firebend. It just give me a slight heat resistance. It's only usefulness is that I could stand closer and longer at the stove."
"Well. Transform then. I never got a proper chance to see it before."
Shen began to feel nervous. He wanted to escape but he couldn't say no to Avatar Korra. He did the one thing he could thought off.
"Hey Mako. Hey Bolin."
"Huh?" Korra turned around to see the boys were not there at all. She turned back and saw Shen running towards the path that lead to the docks.
"Shen! You…Get him girl!"
Naga barked and chased after the boy. Shen saw the animal behind him and immediately knew he couldn't escape. He hugged a nearby pillar and Naga tugged his shirt but Shen held on to it firmly.
"Stop it Naga."
Korra rushed over and tugged on his shirt as well. "Come on. I want to fight you in your armor."
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"Because you're my friend." Korra answered sweetly.
"Friends don't torment each other like this."
"Friends help each other to get stronger. Now transform!"
"Someone help me!"
"What on earth are you two doing?" An angry Tenzin barked at their antics.
Korra and Naga stopped pulling on Shen's shirt and the boy fell flat on his back.
"Morning Tenzin. Going somewhere?" Korra asked as if he did not just caught her and Shen in a weird and embarrassing situation.
Tenzin eyed Korra and Shen as the boy got up and dusted himself.
"I'm going to attend a meeting at the City Hall. To discuss some serious issues. Train airbending with Jinora and the others. Revise what I've thought you. I'll be training you later this evening. I must be off now. Korra. Shen."
"Bye Tenzin."
"Have a safe trip Councilmen Tenzin."
With Tenzin out of sight, Shen felt Korra's hand grabbed the back of his shirt and being pulled back towards the training grounds.
"Spirits spare me." Shen cried.
