The loud static buzzing in Richard's ear lets him know that the Titan's car is probably driving through a tunnel. The conversation between the two best friends has been stunted since they got in the car. There has been plenty of pauses and awkward silences since they've left the garage, which is surprising to him. Richard had assumed that there would be nonstop chatter between the two. There was a paranoid part of him that wondered if they knew that he was listening.
Richard shakes his head in the negative. He doubts that Cyborg would suspect him of eavesdropping like Beastboy does. From what he has gathered, there also seems to be some tension between the two best friends for one reason or another. Richard can think of several reasons. That has to be it since neither men are blasting obnoxiously loud music. He decides to browse the media coverage around the pictures that he's exposed of Rachel and himself. He should be preparing for tomorrow's conference and what message he is going to send to the world, but most importantly Bruce. This will be a delicate dance since he can't outright claim that he and Rachel are dating, but he also doesn't want to dismiss it either. What crumbs can he scatter for the robrae community that won't have his beloved on high alert and open rebellion against the idea? What hidden messages should be embedded into this interview for his adoptive father who doesn't believe that he is capable of making his own choices?
Decisions. Decisions.
As he is mulling over his options and exploring the aftermath of each choice, Richard's keen ears pick up on something.
"Do you believe me now?"
"I don't know what to believe, BB. None of this makes sense."
"I'm telling you that he did something to me...and probably Star…"
"What proof do you have?" came Cyborg's question, "I don't know if I even want to believe you, but...I also don't think that you're lying either."
"I know...I know," says Beastboy, "But there are just too many coincidences for it to not be him. How come we get into an argument and then all of sudden I get sick? And how come Star gets sick when she got into it with Raven?"
"That's all circumstantial and you know it."
Yes, thinks Richard. Beastboy is working off of a hunch. A correct one, but essentially meaningless without evidence to prove it true or false.
"I'm telling you that it's true!" comes an exasperated reply from the changeling, "Why won't you believe me? Aren't you supposed to be my friend? Or are you on his side too?"
Richard is sure that Cyborg is sighing deeply and shaking his head at these accusations. This is something that the younger man has always had a difficult time wrapping his head around because he is prone to impulsive and instinctual actions. It might be the beasts in him. It might be his youth. It's probably both, but that's also why his friendship with the older metal man is so beneficial. He tempers the changeling's wild actions and even wilder emotional states.
"You know that I'm not taking sides here, BB," is the older man's calm, measured response, "But we can't accuse anyone of anything without solid evidence. That goes against everything that we are."
"I know that, but I'm tellin you that there is proof somewhere in the Tower!" is the excited reply, "I don't know where. That's what I was trying to figure out. I'm tellin you that I was close!"
"You breaking into Robin's room and digging through his things is an invasion of privacy! How am I supposed to defend that or explain that away?"
You can't, thinks Richard as he leans further back in his chair. Now that the conversation has started, it'll continue to flow and hopefully they'll let some cats out of the bag. As he listens, he causally scrolls through the gossip columns. Some of these "journalists" were determined to document the evolution of his relationship with Rachel over the years through the use of pictures. He hadn't realized how many poses could so easily be misinterpreted. Not that he's complaining. The media is doing the job that he gave them.
"It was for a just cause!" Beastboy's annoyed voice brings Richard back to the present. "If I had a little more time to get into his laptop, I know I could have found something."
"...because you were looking for something to find or because there's actually something there?"
Ohh, there's definitely plenty of incriminating things on that laptop. Everything from the detailed profiles that he's constructed for every member of the team to all of his notes on I4.6 and its side effects. Beastboy was trying to break into a diamond mine. God forbid that he actually managed to get pass the security features. Richard is thankful that the metal man was torn about helping his friend, otherwise he would be in some serious trouble. The only positive outcome he can think of from that event is Rachel's love confession.
"There is something there. I know that your gut is tellin you too," the changeling responds. "You can't tell me that Robin hasn't been acting weird recently."
"Him acting weird doesn't mean that he's drugging his teammates. What logical reason could he have for do that?"
"What does logic even mean to a psycho?" Beastboy counters.
"He's not psychotic, BB. Sure, he's a control freak who feels the need to have all of his ducks in a row, but that doesn't make him crazy." There is a slight pause as though the big man is hesitating before Richard hears "Are you sure that your suspicions aren't because of someone else?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" is the changeling's challenging question.
There is a sigh before Cyborg's deeper voice says, "You know what I mean. You've always been...uncomfortable?...with how close Raven is to Robin. I'm not saying that you're jealous but…"
"You're saying that I am jealous," Beastboy cuts him off. "I know that you think that's why I'm suspicious, but I'm telling you that there's more to it."
"Listen BB...I'm not saying that I don't think Robin has been acting out of character lately, but that doesn't mean that we can accuse him of things that we can't prove," is Cyborg's calm and measure response.
Trust the older man to be the voice of reason in such chaotic times. Richard is suddenly very thankful for the man's presence throughout all of the emotionally stressful times in his team's history.
"You call those pictures with Raven out of character?!" The changeling practically shouts. "He looked like a full-blown creep in those pictures. Don't you remember how angry you were when you saw them on the news?"
There is quiet. Cyborg is clearly thinking over his answer to his friend's question. There is a low buzz of static before Richard's ears pick up "Yes. I remember BB. I was there. Right next to you. I do remember being shocked by what I saw, but that was because I was thinking about you. I had thought that Raven and you were dating or at least that's how you made it seem. Were you two ever actually official?"
"Of course not," is Beastboy's sad reply. "We never made it that far because Boy Wonder had to get involved."
The fact that Beastboy thought that he had a chance with his Rachel had Richard chuckling under his breath as he reads a post on a forum from a super robrae fan. Apparently, their dreams would be complete if the two dark birds became actual love birds. Well, Nah-Bruh2020, your wish is my command, Richard thinks to himself as he continues his "research."
"BB...I don't think you can lay all the blame at Robin's feet," he hears Cyborg say. "Sometimes...sometimes people just aren't compatible with one another. Doesn't matter how hard they try."
"You're just like Robin," comes the defensive reply, "you don't think that I'm good enough for her, either. Do you? Ya think Robin is?"
"Hold on! I don't think he's good for her either. Sometimes their relationship makes me uncomfortable, so when you told me that you have feelings for her and that she was also interested, I was happy for you. I thought that she would be a good influence on you. Help you mature. I had hoped that you would help her come out of her shell a bit more and enjoy life. I've always been a little concerned about how Robin feeds into her self isolation."
Puah! Does Cyborg really think that he keeps Rachel isolated? She naturally doesn't want to interact with others. Why would he force her to do things that she doesn't want to do? Especially when she used to only seek him out when she feels lonely. Clearly, he's the only one who can fill that void. She had tried to do that with the workers at the library and whatever his name was. Well, the joke's on them because she hasn't been back there since those pictures were released to the media. She probably doesn't want to have to deal with Melvin's probing questions and over enthusiastic opinions.
As long as she willingly stays by his side, there's no reason to force his beloved to do anything.
"You've noticed that, too?"
"Yea. At first, I thought she was just being a moody bitch by staying away from the rest of the team, especially during dinner time. But that's before I realized that she wasn't really comfortable yet. When she did get used to being around us, I was glad to see her come out of her shell, but after that Slade incident...you know the one that happened on her birthday...I noticed that Robin became more…I don't know if attentive is the word, but he was definitely paying attention to her."
"You mean stalkerish," Beastboy supplies with a huff. "Attentive is too nice. There was a time when he wouldn't let me near her. He didn't pair us up for patrol or sparing. I had tried visiting her room to invite her to play video games with us once or twice, but he wouldn't let me get close to her door, much less actually see her."
Richard is sure that the last person Rachel wanted to see after that incident was Beastboy. A kid who couldn't keep his energy under control and his mouth shut. Why would she want him to give her a headache? Of course, he kept all the team members at bay until his love could catch her bearings and ease her turbulent emotions. Clearly the changeling is holding on to this childish grudge.
"Yea. The way that he was always guarding Raven really put Starfire on edge. I think that's when she started noticing some weird things about his behavior," the older mad adds on. "As his girlfriend, it really put her on edge."
Richard is gritting his teeth at Cyborg's last statement. He never was and never will be Starfire's boyfriend. His interest in the alien princess had fizzled out years ago. Why can't anyone seem to understand that?
"I remember. She had told me that that was around the time her relationship with Raven also took a nosedive. Robin wouldn't even let her see Raven for weeks after that incident. He was the one taking her meals to her. Checking in on her. Giving her the medication. He was walking in and out of her bedroom like it was a revolving door, but when any of us try to see her, he would kick up a fuss. It was fucking annoying. We wanted to see her too!"
Typical Beastboy. Trying to blame everything on Richard. Didn't he realize that Rachel wasn't in the right state of mind to deal with all of them and their personality disorders? She had wanted peace and quiet. Tranquility. She had needed him and his support. He knew all the right things to say to her. He was the first person that she saw when she opened her eyes. It was his reassuring smile that had put her at ease. It was his voice telling her that she was safe with him. He was the only one that she wanted to see...that she could tolerate at that time. She didn't even ask about the others. He wasn't going to throw her out there for everyone else to peck at until she was ready to walk out of her room all on her own.
"I understand, BB," Cyborg says, "I also wanted to see her just like everyone else. I only saw her in the medic bay to tend to her initial wounds. Once we knew she was out of danger, Robin swooped her up and took back to her room. It would be weeks before I saw Raven again. I thought it was a little strange, but I hadn't thought too much about it because I knew that he was the one she was closest too at that point. It makes sense that she would want to be around someone that she's comfortable with, but when we fought her father and brought her back from hell...I dunno. Can't put my finger on what made me so concerned."
Richard can hear a snort before the changeling replies with "Everything. Everything about the way he looks at her, touches her, talks to her...it just gives me the creeps. He looks like a sex offender in the making."
It occurs to Richard that he should feel offended by that statement, but he doesn't. If both of those men knew about the unholy thoughts doing laps in his head, there would be a murder in the Titan Tower. Last night's wet dream involved ropes, sticky syrup and a very tired Rachel with tears in her eyes.
"His behavior is concerning," is Cyborg's response, "but I'm actually talking about Raven."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm talking about the way she just...latched on to him like a lifeline. Like he was the only one who came to save her. Like that wasn't a group effort." There is a pause before the metal man continues with "I'm worried about her. It's almost like she keeps turning a blind eye to all of the questionable things that he says and does."
"I'm real worried about her, too, Cy." is the changeling's quiet response. "She's always willing to take his side. Even when I would tell her about how Robin would make me feel inferior during training or treats me like a kid, she would always take his side. Even when he takes out his anger on me and makes me do extra work, she would just find some way to dismiss it. It's almost like he could do no wrong in her eyes."
"This is why I don't understand why you thought it was a good idea to get involved with her. You know that she only has eyes for Robin. Even if she doesn't want to admit that she has a crush on him or something, no one can deny that they have deep feelings for each other. I told you not to get in the middle of that. You'd only get hurt in the end."
Richard had to strain his ears to pick up on the sad, bitter laugh in the car. He kind of felt bad for Beastboy in this moment. He knew he was going to get burned in this situation, but like a moth to a flame, the shape shifter just flew closer and closer.
"I'm not sure what to tell you, Cy. She put her arms around me once and I was hooked. Am hooked. I had tried to kiss her at that party a couple Saturdays ago. We were in the bathroom. I had just threw up…"
"Yuck, BB. No one wants to kiss someone who just threw up…"
There was a chuckle before the younger man continues "I know that, but liquid courage made me try. Anyway, she wouldn't let me kiss her...which is understandable. Instead, she pushed my hair back and gently washed my face in the sink. I don't think I've ever felt that cared for before...I didn't realize how soft her hands were, either. I think the thing that really struck me is that she didn't use her powers to do it. You know? She could have easily used her powers to slap some cold water on my face and walked out, but she didn't do that. She stayed with me. Even found some mouthwash in the cabinet and helped me rinse out my mouth."
There was quiet on both ends from both men listening to Beastboy: one openly and one in secret. Richard wasn't sure about what was going on in Cyborg's mind, but the amount of rage and jealousy whirling through his is starting to give him a headache. He always knew that Rachel is a caring person in her own quiet way, but the knowledge of her sharing that part of herself with the undeserving changeling is causing his stomach to churn. Richard had thought that he was the only one she handles with so much care.
"Then you kissed her the next morning? You move pretty fast, BB," comments Cyborg.
"Faster than she was willing to go. I know that she's the cautious type, but I saw an opening and took it in the kitchen."
At this point Richard's knuckles have turned white from the grip he has on the arms of his chair. The thought of that foolish brat knowing what Rachel tastes like while he's stuck sneaking drinks from her used glass makes him want to cave the changeling's face in. He shouldn't have held back as much as he did when Beastboy had attacked him in his bedroom. He should have broken a knee or knocked the teeth out of his mouth while he had the chance.
"You wanna know something real fucked up, Cy? Part of the reason why I kissed her was because I knew Starfire was watching. I could smell her scent and feel her eyes on us. It made me want to put on a show, you know? But I took it a step too far…"
"What did you do?"
"I had threw her on the counter top and put my knee between…"
"Dick?"
The sound of his name had him jumping halfway out of his seat. Richard had been so caught up in the new information that he was learning from Cyborg and Beastboy's conversation that he wasn't paying enough attention to his surrounds. He hadn't noticed that Rachel is standing behind him with a very concerned look on her face. Her eyes are darting between him and what she is seeing on his computer screen. Thankfully, she doesn't realize that he's listening in on the conversation being had between the other two team members.
"Oh! Hi, Rachel. I didn't hear you come in," Richard says as he tries to reign in the multitude of emotions that he was allowing himself to freely feel since he thought he was alone.
Rachel is looking at him with furrowed brows as she says "I knocked a few times, but you didn't answer. I know that you wanted to speak to me before tomorrow's conference. Is now not a good time?"
"Ah," Richard replies, "Now works for me if you give me a second. I was listening to a podcast on my phone while doing research."
The lie was said smoothly and convincingly. It appears as though Rachel doesn't suspect a thing as she turns her attention to the main computer screen. Her eyes are scanning the various media headlines as it pertains to the latest Titans gossip. Richard quickly switches the bug that he's planted in their car to record mode. He'll listen to the rest of what they have to say later. Probably tonight. He doubts he'll be able to fall asleep with so much adrenaline running through he veins.
Once he puts the device away, he turns his attention to Rachel. The woman that he thought he knew. While the news of her and Beastboy locking lips was nothing new, he thought he had gotten over it. He thought he could move pass the idea that she is more experienced that he gave her credit for. The truth is that he's jealous of the changeling. He was willing to gamble away his friendship with Rachel, but he guesses that that makes sense. They didn't have much of one to begin with, so there wasn't a lot that he was giving up. Not like Richard. The relationship between the two birds ran deep and pursuing a romantic partnership could leave more lasting damage if they didn't work out. Beastboy was in it for a good time, Richard is more interested in a long time.
He keenly watches her as she leans over the control panel to continue scrolling on the web page that he was last on. The artificial light from the computer screen highlights half of her face as she continues to study the new information. Her expression is stoic as she read through the various salacious headlines. Story after story on how they met. How their love for one another blossomed under the media's nose. How Rachel is the "other woman" and Richard is an unfaithful man. Thread after thread of arguments between robstar shippers and robrae enthusiasts. Each heatedly debating why one pairing is better than the other. Why each pairing makes more sense than the next. Yet, no one bothering to wonder if the actual people they're basing these arguments and fantasies on want any part in the games that they're playing.
"Sometimes...sometimes they forget we're real people, Rachel," he says to break the silence. "We're just distant playthings for them to fantasize about."
Her pretty face screws itself up into an annoyed expression before replying in a whisper, "That's why I don't pay attention to the tabloids. They'll say anything just to sell a story. Doesn't matter if it's true or not."
"I've never really bothered with them either, but we have to know what they're saying before our conference tomorrow," Richard states in a very quite voice. He had left the command room in darkness as he worked. He didn't see the point in turning the lights on since he was only listening to Beastboy and Cyborg's conversation while casually surfing the web. He's glad that he didn't because it seems to have set a more intimate mood between the two teammates.
"I understand," she says, "We need to send a clear message that we're not a couple and never will be."
Even though Rachel wasn't looking at him, Richard finds himself looking away from her to hide his grimace at that clear rejection. While his pride has been pricked, the definitive nature of her tone just makes him want to dig his heels in further. He will change her mind. She will come to see him as an extension of herself, just like he views her. It is inevitable.
"Yes. Our message needs to be clear," Richard echoes. "We need to know what we're going to say tomorrow when it's just the two of us on stage."
As Richard says this, his mind replays the last in person conversation he had with Bruce at Wayne Manor. His mentor made is painfully clear that he expects the whole team to be on the stage during this press conference. He thought that it would portray a sense of unity, even though this has been the least unified that they've been in a very long time. Richard clearly thinks different. The rumors that are circling around are about him and Rachel. They should be the only two on stage addressing the issue. Maybe even Starfire, but he's not quite sure that she'll be able to keep it together long enough to make it through a series of rapid fire questions. Beastboy is away on a time out mission, so he clearly can't be there. Come to think of it, the old man probably already knows since he's been checking in with Cyborg. Richard is curious to see if he really will replace him as leader of the Titans over this. Even if he does, Richard is ready. He's been making preparations for this day for quite some time.
"What are some questions that you think they're going to ask?" she inquires.
Richard sees an opportunity to probe for some more information. The last thing he heard Beastboy say in that car was disturbing on many levels. The knowledge that he had his paws all over Rachel's body is aggravating and stirring every ounce of jealousy he has in his body. The thought that she would be a willing participant is equally as distressing. He can feel his face pulling itself into a scowl.
"Dick?" Rachel is looking at him with clear concern in her features. There's no way for her to know what's bothering him; just that he is bothered.
"Sorry," he says in dismissive tone before taking two very deep breaths. He lets out the second breath as a deep sigh before continuing with "There's a lot on my mind right now. The criminals have been quiet, but the media is not."
"Do you think they'll start to act up if they notice that we're divided?" she asks. It is a question that hadn't crossed either of their minds.
"There's a chance" he says as he motions to another office chair in the corner of the room. "You should grab a seat. It's going to take a while to run all of the scenarios and possible questions they'll ask."
Rachel nods her head as she causally waves a slender, pale hand in the air. As if by magic, the chair in the corner of the room comes rolling towards her. She eases herself in the seat and Richard notices that she is attempting to put as much physical space between them as possible. This is a far cry from how she behaved with him the last time they were in here together. Then, just like now, she had been concerned for his health because he had came home sick from the charity gala. She hadn't been on her guard with him at that point and was willing to step into his personal space. She had willingly opened her arms to him when he asked for a hug. She even allowed him to rest his tired head on her soft breasts as she held him.
While Richard is sadden by the lost of her physical warmth, he consoles himself with the knowledge that they will be closer than they once were. He just has to get her to realize that his feelings for her have changed and that there's no one to blame for that. She's not responsible for him losing his interest in the Tower's princess nor should she beat herself up for not being able to return the changeling's feelings. That's not how real relationships work. What they have is different. What they have is real, but unrealized romantic potential. He'll help her understand it. Sooner or later. There is no giving up once he's made a commitment.
"Well," Richard says, "The first question that they'll ask is if we are a real couple. What do you say to that?"
"Absolutely not," comes Rachel's resolute answer. Richard responds with a sad chuckle under his breathe. How easily she can hurt him without even knowing it. He hasn't felt this vulnerable since he was a child.
"Okay. Why not?" he asks.
"Excuse me?" is her perplexed question.
"Why aren't Raven and Robin a real couple?" Richard clarifies. He can feel his heart pounding a little more loudly in his chest.
"Would they really ask that, Dick?" says with her head tilted to the side in deep thought.
"There's a good chance that they might."
"How would you answer that?" she asks.
Richard begins rubbing at the stubble on his chin in thought. How should he it phrase this so that it answers the question but doesn't rule out the possibility of a future together? Eventually he says, "I would say that we aren't a couple because it would be against company policy. The Titans do not encourage work place romances."
Rachel scrunches her eyebrows together as she thinks about that vague and politically correct answer. Her lower lip is trapped between her teeth in a way that is captivating for poor Richard. "That's it? It doesn't seem like a strong enough answer. It wouldn't explain your relationship with Starfire."
"There is no romantic relationship with Starfire. We never made our 'romance' publicly official. I always talked around that question because I didn't want to give off the wrong impression. It's a good thing, too, since there is no relationship to be had here," is Richard's quick reply.
"I know you talked around it," sighs Rachel as she neatly folders her hands together on her stomach while stretching out her legs and crossing her ankles. A glint of silver beneath the hem of her dark jeans catches his sharp eyes. His heart warms at the fact that she is still wearing his gift even after everything that they've been through recently.
"...It made Starfire so sad when you'd do that," she continues, "She would complain to me with tears in her eyes about how you weren't taking what you had seriously. That she felt like she wasn't good enough for you. You know, the common concerns of an uncertain girlfriend."
"She was never my girlfriend…"
"Yet, you led her on for quite some time. You made it seem like there was some hope there," she cuts him off.
"I didn't, you did!" Richard all but shouts. "How many times had I told you that I didn't think that Star and I would make a good couple? How many times have I shared with you that I don't see myself sharing a life with her? Huh?"
She is quiet in the face of his unexpected outburst. This encourages him to continue with "How many times have you tried to talk me into giving her another chance? How many times have you and everyone else tried setting us up on dates in hopes of rekindling a dead flame? You put yourself in the middle of this by trying to play matchmaker. You can't blame me for this when you guys gave her more hope for this than I did."
Rachel swallows the lump in her throat as she mulls over his words. "You're right in that I meddled more than I should have. But you have to understand that I didn't want both of my friends to miss out on a good thing because of a stupid slump in their relationship. I had Starfire crying on my shoulder trying to figure out how you lost interest and I had you being consumed by your work so that you don't have to think about it. That's not healthy, Dick!"
A dry laugh erupts from Richard's throat at the thought of Rachel and healthy relationships when she doesn't have very many in her life. He says with amusement in his eyes, but not in his voice, "You're such a hopeless romantic, Rachel. You want to see the fantasy unfold like a movie...so why not star in it? You can have the leading role and the main man."
"What's that supposed to mean, Dick?" she asks with an edge in her voice. Now is not the time for a lover's quarrel between the two. They need to be on the same page for tomorrow.
"Why did you decide to get involved with Beastboy?" he asked while completely ignoring her question. "Weren't you trying to chase the dream? But with him of all people?"
"There's nothing wrong with Beastboy, Dick," she retorts while crossing her arms over her chest. The movement automatically makes his eyes hone in on the sight of her lovely breasts filling out the fabric of her shirt. He has to actively stop himself from licking his lips. "...he's a good person. We're just not compatible, is all."
"Ha!," Richard barks, "I could have told you that. If you would have came to me sooner, I could have saved you the time and trouble."
"I don't need your approval, Dick. I can date who I want," Rachel states with an open challenge in her eyes. He can tell that she's losing patience with him.
Like hell you can, he thinks to himself before responding with "I can't help but to think of how two faced you're being about this…"
He watches as her jaw tightens at the accusation, but he pushes on in a quiet voice that only emphasizes how angry he is, "You can readily admit that Beastboy isn't the one for you...even after all of the things you've done with him...but you can't wrap your pretty little head around the fact that Starfire isn't the one for me?"
"How would you know what I've done with him?" she demands. The chakra gem in the middle of her forehead is beginning to pulse.
"People talk, Rachel," he hisses. He can't outright tell her about the listening device that's still recording in the car, but he's itching to repeat the things that the shape shifter is telling Cyborg.
"You mean like those people, Dick?" she says while aggressively pointing to the gossip columns on the computer screen. "What were you thinking that night?"
I was thinking about how beautiful you looked under the moonlight. I was thinking about how happy we could make each other if you would just give us a chance and let go of your guilt. I was thinking about running my tongue across your clit until your legs clamp and shake around my head.
"I wasn't thinking straight," he says. I had clearly miscalculated such an intense move. Not that Richard completely regrets it. He had to get the ball rolling somehow. He had made his intentions known to the rest of the Titans and the world when he released those pictures.
"Clearly! Now we're in this mess. How are we going to clean this up tomorrow? You know that public opinion is important to our hero reputation," she rants.
"I know that! We're going to stick to the script of being work friends. Our team highly discourages romantic relationships between teammates," Richard states while trying to get his temper back in check.
"That's not good enough," Rachel interjects. "It needs to be more concrete than that for it to be believable. Robin and Raven cannot be romantically involved because they are comrades with a job to do. Raven doesn't see Robin as a man...the Boy Wonder is just her leader."
OUCH! Look at our girl...coming for blood and destroying a man's pride. *wipes away tear* Is Richard really going to take that lying down, though?
