Roman got out of the police car and looked up at the house. In there lived 43 year old Florrie Balor. Her husband Finn had been missing for a while and rumor on the street was that she had killed him and buried him in the garden.
"We can never afford a place like this on our salary," Seth said.
Roman looked over at his partner Seth who had exited the car too. Seth broke out in a smile and Roman smiled back.
"Not in a million years," Roman said.
"Shall we?" Seth asked.
Roman nodded and walked over to the fence. He held up his badge for the camera and the gate started moving aside. They stepped onto the property and walked towards the house while the gate closed behind them.
"What a garden," Seth said. "She must have planted every single vegetable on the planet."
"Doubtful," Roman said.
"And look at all those berry bushes. I'm jealous. I want a garden like this," Seth said.
"Ask her for some tips then," Roman said.
"I'd rather ask her for money to afford it," Seth said.
The door opened and Florrie stepped outside to look at them. They continued forward while taking her in. Her hair was curly, light brown and went to just below her shoulders, and her eyes were soft green.
"How can I help you?" Florrie asked.
"We would like to search your garden," Roman said.
"Do you have a warrant?" Florrie asked.
Roman and Seth looked at each other. They knew it was a long shot asking to search her garden without a warrant.
"If you have nothing to hide, it shouldn't be a problem," Seth said.
"I'll let you search it if you sign a paper saying you'll rebuild it completely as it is right now," Florrie said.
"That will cost too much," Seth said.
"Guess you can't search it then," Florrie said.
Seth gave Roman a look of irritation. Roman was always the calm one where Seth wanted to blow up and scream to get his way.
"Is it alright if he looks at it without touching anything?" Roman asked.
"Go ahead," Florrie said.
Seth took the hint that Roman wanted to talk to Florrie alone and walked over to the garden to look at it. Roman looked at Florrie and put on his best smile.
"We just want to find your husband. He missed his court date and no one has been able to find him since. You're a smart woman, Florrie. You're not a low life criminal like him," he said.
"I didn't kill him and he's not buried in my garden," she said.
"Then prove it," he said.
"He's only missing," she said.
She looked over at Seth to make sure he was busy studying her garden. She could already tell Roman would be the only one of those two she could talk to.
"I can help you find him but you must do as I say," she said.
"This isn't a game," he said.
"It is to him," she said. "He wants everything I own. Property and money. A divorce will not give him my house and money since he signed a prenup before we got married. I made my money in an honest way and I'm not about to give him any of it. I'm not proud of falling in love with someone like him but it just happened. You can't control things like that. I'm no longer in love with him and I would love to divorce him but he went missing."
Roman thought about it for a few seconds. What she said did make sense. Finn was the criminal. Florrie was a good person. When the rumor of her killing Finn started circulating, he had been surprised, but he also knew a lot of rich people were good at paying people off and getting away with a lot of things. For now he needed to keep both doors open until he could figure out what exactly was going on.
"What do you want me to do?" He asked.
"I'll stop by your place for lunch Saturday," she said.
"Why?" He asked.
"I'll tell you Saturday," she looked over at Seth. "Don't invite him. I only trust you so far."
He looked over at Seth too and nodded. He knew it could be stupid not to have backup but he was curious to know what she was planning.
"You got yourself a deal, Florrie," he said.
"Good," she said. "Now get your boy before he ruins my garden with his big boots. He can't afford rebuilding it with his salary."
"You heard us," he said.
"Of course I heard you. I got cameras and speakers out there," she said.
He smiled at her and nodded, then whistled loudly to get Seth's attention.
"We're leaving!" He yelled.
