Chapter 30: Marked Target

Makoto and Sayaka quickly got to the Togami company and they looked shocked as they got there and there was a huge mob in front of it all screaming complains and insults – "Release and kill the original demon! You lied to us! Release the truth to the public! We will bring down the company until you release and kill the demon! All ghouls and demons should die! Long live Humanity!"- and other things as Makoto felt worse and worse hearing this. He knew humans would hate him… but to listen to the protests and screams made him feel worse.
He then felt Sayaka hug him, surprising him – "It's ok Makoto… they don't know how amazing you are"- she said making him smile softly – "thanks Sayaka"- Makoto and Sayaka then started walking and they reached a small building close to the Togami company. Sayaka looked confused as Makoto entered the building, following him shortly. They entered and walked a short hallway before getting on an elevator. They rode it down and walked another hallway underground, finally entering the Togami company. But what they didn't know was that two people managed to sneak in with them – "we did it!"- screamed whispered Kaede to Shuichi who just looked worried and terrified.
"Kaede, we can't do this. We will get into trouble"- he said nervously as he followed her – "don't you want to find out the truth?"- she said super excited. They then noticed that both Makoto and Sayaka turned the corner and quickly followed before they felt someone grab both of them – "so who are you guys?"- Makoto said as he grabbed them, they both then looked shocked – "Um… Um.."- Kaede panicked, she knew he was a reaper – "I'm sorry!"- said Kaede almost on the verge of crying. Makoto then remembered them – "Hey it's you guys. From the warehouse!"- Makoto said surprising both of them – "you remember us?"- Shuichi said a little surprised – "of course, I never forget someone"- he said with a little pride – "so what are you two doing here?"- Sayaka asked like a parent reproaching their kids – "well… I mean… How could we not be interested in ghouls and reapers after what we lived?!"- Kaede said trying her best to keep calm – "That's it?" – Makoto then said surprising the three of them.
"for a second I thought you were just bad spies from the Neo exorcist"- Makoto said smiling, surprising Kaede, who didn't know why she felt a warm feeling on her chest and blushed – "well we aren't"- she said shily shocking Shuichi since he had never seen her like that – "well sadly I can't let you go more in. they would probably rip my head off if they knew I let you two in. But how about this. I'll give you my number and then you can call me at any time, and I will reunite with you and tell you as much as I can"- Makoto said smiling softly. Kaede's heart then pounded hard as Makoto's smile sunk into the deepest of her soul. – "and you will come right?"- she asked, and he nodded – "do you promise?" – Makoto nodded again. Kaede then huffed still blushing – "well then I guess I can accept that"- she said trying to act tough. – "Thanks for understanding"- Makoto said and she quickly turned around trying to hide her embarrassed face – "well Shuichi we should go"- she said to the quite astonished Shuichi, who didn't know what was happening to his friend. Sayaka looked Makoto with suspicion – "Makoto you playboy"- she said before she looked surprised at his true face of confusion. He truly didn't know he was seducing her. She then giggled a little and started walking – "you Playboy"- she said leaving him more confused.
On the other hand, Shuichi and Kaede were walking to the exit – "Kaede what happened there?"- Shuichi asked only to be ignored by Kaede. He then looked confused and looked at her face. She looked like she was deep into her imagination, with a pink blush on her face – "KAEDE!"- he said loudly finally breaking her from her trance – "Umm… what?"- she asked, and Shuichi looked suspicious – "I was asking you why did you stop trying to find out the truth?"- she then blushed a little and looked away – "well I mean, he will tell us, so why must we keep sneaking"- Shuichi just sighed – "WAIT THAT WAS SAYAKA MAIZONO… AND I FORGOT TO ASK FOR HER AUTOGRAPH!"- She screamed as it just hit his mind. Shuichi looked shocked and sighed again and they left.

As Makoto and Sayaka walked through the hallway they noticed both Kyoko and Byakuya looking at a weird scene. Kijo was in a berserk state and Jin was holding him down from running to the window – "so… what is happening?"- Makoto asked confused at the scene. Byakuya sighed- "Well dad heard them insult his workers and family and wants to go outside and beat them up"- Makoto looked a little surprised, before he couldn't hold it in and started laughing surprising them. They hadn't heard him laugh like that in a while. His laugh even made both Jin and Kijo look at him. Somehow hearing him laugh made everyone feel better. Makoto then noticed that everyone was looking at him, and blushed – "Sorry"- he said embarrassed, making everyone giggle, and making him blush more.
Finally, calm they all entered the office. Kijo sitting on his chair while scuffing – "Dammit with all those protesters"- Kijo said annoyed. Making Byakuya sigh – "so father why have you called us here?" – he asked, making both Jin and Kijo look at each other – "Makoto… we are pulling you out of the Reaper program"- Makoto and everyone eyes widened in surprise hearing him saying that.
"Wait… what?"-Makoto asked trying his best to make sense out of all of it. Kijo then crossed his hands over his face – "We are pulling you out of the Reaper program. After the mayor scene that Kazuo has made with his Neo-Exorcists, and the reveal that the Togami is hiding you. We can no longer keep you working as a Reaper."- Kijo explained. Makoto then looked down and clenched his fist.
"Is… because they can now kill me?" – He said with a little bit of anger on his voice. Kijo then sighed – "well yes that would be one of the reasons… But in reality, Makoto… when we picked you up, we promised you a normal life. But with your ability showing and the sudden rise of ghouls we believed we needed your power to beat them, but now the situation has changed, now you are not only the target of two massive enemies but at the same time you are afraid for the first time"- Kijo said shocking Makoto… how did he know? Byakuya, Sayaka, and Kyoko looked at him what did he mean – "You always talked about how you wanted to die and all that… but when it almost happened you were afraid weren't you?"- Makoto then looked away – "so? I just have to deal with it"- Makoto said trying to act strong – "It's just a wound, that's all… that is no reason to give me the boot"- he said angry shocking everyone. Neither Byakuya nor Kyoko hadn't seen him like that before.
"Makoto being a reaper won't help you fight your trauma"- Makoto's eyes widened in rage – "so as the leader of the Togami company and the Reaper project, I will suspend your work indefinitely, you are also prohibited from entering the Togami company. So please, try to live a normal life for a while. I promise you, you will enjoy it after a while"- he said calmly
Makoto then clenched his fist and punched his desk, breaking it in half. Before he quickly left the room. Sayaka then quickly followed, she was worried for him – "father… do you believe this was the correct decision"- Byakuya asked sadly – "if it is true that he is afraid, then should we try to support him as much as possible?"- Kijo then looked sad as well.
"Normally I would agree with you. But in order to protect him… we must keep him as far as possible from the chaos. When we took him in, we promised him to protect him from suffering. And after Kazuo made his move… we can't simply ignore it and act like it never happened" -Byakuya looked at Kyoko who was looking away and crying – "But still"

Sayaka went out through the same passageway. And after walking out she finally found him. He was sitting on the floor holding his knees, he looked like a lost child. She then smiled softly and sat next to him – "so how are you?"- she asked softly – "I'm sorry I just… well did that"- he said sadly making her smile – "well I never knew this part of you… I guess in some ways it has it's plus"- she joked making him smile a little
"It's just… I have been living this life for such a long time… that… I don't know how to live without it. I was never raised as a normal kid. While others played with toys, I learned how to use a blade, how to kill ghouls. I just don't know what to do" – Sayaka then looked at him – "but I thought you hated it"- she responded – "and I do… normally I would love the opportunity to live a normal life… but now"- he looked down
"you are afraid"- she said shocking him – "how did you?"- she then smiled – "Because I am a psychic"- his eyes widened – "just kidding I just have good intuition"- She said giggling making him blush embarrassed – "You never had to be afraid from pain, because of how you were tortured. But now after the incident, you feel weak and afraid… that is why you want to fight again, to try and find strength and to forget your trauma. But now they don't let you fight, making you mad at them"- Makoto looked impressed, she said she had good intuition… but wow she could read him so good? Was he so easy to read – "So how about instead of fighting you let me help you?"-She said smiling as she stood up again and offered her hand to help him up. He looked surprised – "you may not think it will help. But I know that working together we can find a solution,"- Makoto's heart skipped a beat as he looked at her. The sun making her shine, he then smiled, as he gently held her hand
"sure"

As this was happening outside, back inside, Kijo, Jin, Byakuya, and Kyoko were still into office – "So father… I don't believe Makoto's suspension is the only reason for your call father, isn't it?"- He asked him making Kijo sigh - "sadly it isn't."- he then pressed a button on his now broken desk, making Jin laugh a little as to how silly he looked. After pressing it, his back wall opened and a flat tv appeared, the one turned on and revealed a video of Kazuo – "this is an old video that Kazuo sent to me before the Livestream"- He explained before he pushed play and the video started
"Good afternoon Kijo Togami"- he said dressed in his Pope costume – "You may be asking why I have sent you this video. The first purpose is to advise you about the massive Livestream revealing a new system and weapon I and my team of scientists have created, although you should have already seen it's power on Makoto"- they heard Kazuo says, as Kyoko and Byakuya looked angry – "in fact, we have sent you a small sample for you to verify. Well to the main point this is a warning for you and everyone connected to Makoto, the Ghouls, and Dr. Tsesuna… you are all now active targets as well"- he said seriously – "While Dr. Tsesuna and his ghoul goons are our main target. You and especially Makoto should be prepared and protected. Not that it will help" – the video then just stopped.
"as you can see unlike the normal exorcist, who just want to protect people from the ghouls. The Neo exorcists are declaring war to not only the ghouls and Dr. Tsesuna, but they are targeting everyone connected to the incident: human, ghoul, Vampire or anything in between. They want to erase the incident from history"- he said shocking them – "but wait I mean over the years it may be possible to reduce the memories of the event, but to erase it, is impossible"- Byakuya said but Jin shook his head
"Normally I would agree with you, but it's not the case"- he said showing a small dose of the vaccine/ antivirus, it looked like a white with blue streak liquid – "this is a test dose of the weapon. And after we tested it we found out two horrible facts of it"- he said before he looked at Jin, who nodded and pulled out a chart and started reading – "first thing first the vaccine was made with another purpose other than preventing ghoulification. Other than the fact that it is made with a small part of Makoto's blood to be able to destroy it as a vaccine should, we have also found out that it is filled nanobots, which accelerate the procedure of the vaccine, but as well it interacts with the brain. Especially with the part of the brain that takes care of memories. In other words, it's purpose is to erase and modify the memories of people" – Jin said surprising them.
"But the other thing we have found out is that in reality, the cure doesn't cure ghouls"- he said confusing them – "But?"- Kyoko asked confused after all the Livestream showed different – "While it does eliminate all the virus of Makoto on them. It doesn't change the body modifications that ghouls have suffered"- he said as they looked confused – "well you see when a person is infected with the ghoulification virus, although they mutate, their body isn't harmfully affected over the transformation. Once the virus enters their system it adapts to the body so the body works with it and helps in the transformation. In other words, it helps people turn into monsters. But the antivirus is invasive, once it enters, it targets the original virus and destroys it. Temporally it deactivates the mutations, but because their body is adapted to the mutation, once their bodies try again to mutate, their bodies can't handle it and well…"- Both Kyoko and Byakuya understood.
They would die. The church was lying to them.

The day finally ended and both Sayaka and Makoto had spent the day together just having fun together. Yeah, it was kind of complicated with all the different peoples talking and complaining of the current status of the world. And bothering Makoto a bit, Sayaka would try her best to cheer him up. He enjoyed it.
The night fell in and both of them were walking in the park, next to the lake. The moonlight reflecting on the water. Sayaka was walking in front of him, she was excited – "So… how was it?"- she asked him looking at him with a full smile. He smiled back – "well I had a lot of fun"- she then got close – "see I told you" – She said as he blushed. She then blushed as well – "do you want to make it more fun?"- she asked a little sheepishly and bushing. Makoto then looked confused, and she quickly kissed him. He looked surprised for a second before he got into it himself and kissed back with the same intensity as the moonlight shone on top of them.
Makoto eyes then opened quickly as he quickly grabbed Sayaka and jumped away, dodging a whip – "wow you managed to dodge the attack"- he heard as he held Sayaka in a protective manner – "much better than last time I would have to admit"- Silen said, coming from the shadows with a group of neo-exorcist appeared – "I guess this time we will have to work harder"- she said as she rolled her white and blue whip on her hand. Makoto chest then ached a little over the weapon – "Bad memories of the AV? Ohh sorry, the Anti Viral weapon"- she joked. Makoto then stood back – "Sayaka… run"- Sayaka didn't want to but did it – "go catch her"- Silen then ordered a couple of her goons. Who dashed to try, only to be intercepted by Makoto that punched them with blood metal gauntlets, breaking their arms and leg – "you are not going anywhere"- he said his eyes red in anger to the fact they would try and target Sayaka.
"Umm interesting. Even when you are angry, you didn't try to kill them"- she said as Makoto looked angry – "he did tell me you wouldn't… but it's hard to believe when fighting against a monster like you"- she said. Makoto then took a hard breath trying to calm himself – "I don't want to fight"- Silen then cracked her whip and the other two Neo Exorcists pulled their weapons… made from the same material – "sadly for you… I don't care"
The two goons the dashed to where Makoto was. Branding their weapons, one a spear and the other an ax. Makoto quickly dodging their attacks. Makoto then attacked them from their blind spot. Only for his eyes to widened and bent back dodging the whip of Silen. As the managed to regain his posture, once again he had to go into the defensive. This process repeated a couple of times, he dodges, he attacking only to be interrupted by Silen and her whip. And if he even tried to target her, both her goons would interrupt.
"Damn" – Makoto complained, normally he would be able to quickly beat them. But he had to prevent himself from being injured… because although a flesh wound wouldn't kill him like the stab… it would probably stop him in his tracks. As he thought this, he then noticed the spear close to his head. He then moved. Getting slightly injured. Without a thought, Makoto quickly turned his gloves into shorts swords and sliced of that part of his face. Makoto then quickly healed, as the sliced of part quickly disintegrated - "Impressive reaction little vampire… but next time it won't work out like this" – Makoto looked mad.
The goons then resumed their attacks and Makoto dodged. Until they both finally managed to hit him. Both of them smiled as they felt their weapons connect. Until both of them looked shocked. They both saw that Makoto had a bloody cloak. And from his cloak, two claw hands appeared grabbing their weapons. Makoto then took it from them and quickly hit them knocking them out. Before looking at Silen.
"Give up already"- Makoto said and Silen smiled – "still naïve"- she then pulled a trigger and clicked it. It only took Makoto a couple of seconds before he noticed what she was doing. Makoto cloak then fully covered him as both men exploded. Sending him flying and making him crash through a tree that fully impaled him. After the wreckage and the dust settled, he looked Silen walking to him, her whip turned into a rapier – "and so this is the end"- she said grinning, Makoto looked weakly at her. And fear sunk in… as she walked closer with her rapier, more and more he felt afraid of death. But his body wouldn't obey. Silen stood in front of him before preparing herself to stab him – "This is the end"- and quickly attacked.
"you see… I knew you were a monster"- Silen said as blood started coming from her mouth. She had missed him… and instead from Makoto's wounds, a spike appeared stabbing her in her heart. Makoto looked horrified over what he had done…he had killed a human. – "Well I guess you truly are lucky"- she said as her body gave in and fell. Makoto's eyes widened in horror as he saw the blood coming from her lifeless body. His breath starting to hyperventilate. He's done it… he had killed a human… he was a monster… he was covered in her blood… he… he.
"Makoto calm down!"- Ezio said in her spectral form as she hugged him to help him calm down – "you did it to protect yourself… you aren't a monster. Please don't think that"- Makoto's breath started calming down… until he started crying.
…
Sayaka, now accompanied by Kyoko, Byakuya, Maki, Mondo, and Mukuro started running to the scene of the crime. Seeing the mass destruction in the park and looking for Makoto. It took them a while but finally found him. He was walking back. His body covered in blood and wounds and his eyes soulless and tired. Without a second thought, everyone ran to him to check if he was ok. Sayaka jumping and hugging him, not caring about getting dirty with blood. Mondo then put his hand on Makoto's shoulder- "Let's take you, home man"
