Jax stood in front of Tara's tombstone with Abel and Thomas. This morning, as soon as Abel woke up, he kept asking Jax if they were going to see Tara. As Jax had promised his five-year-old son, they left the house after breakfast and drove to the cemetery. Of course, Abel did make Jax pick up some of Tara's favorite flowers on their way here.
Jax kneels down as he sets the roses against her tombstone, sighing deeply. "Hi, babe. I'm sorry that I haven't come sooner. I've just been busy. But I'm here now, and I brought the boys with me. Abel wanted to see you." Jax said with a small smile.
"Hi mommy, here I drew this picture for you," Abel said as he placed a drawing of him and Tara holding hands down next to the roses. "I wanna tell you that I've been helping Grandma take care of Tommy, and of course our new Nanny is really nice. I miss you, Mommy, and I'm thinking about you every day."
"I'm sure she knows that, buddy," Jax said softly as he placed his hand gently on Abel's shoulder. "Come on, son, we should get back."
Abel nods his head a little as he looks at Tara's tombstone once more. "Bye, Mommy. I love you," he said, looking up at Jax. "Can we come back tomorrow?" he asked, hoping that Jax would say yes.
Jax wasn't really sure what to say, as he didn't want to disappoint Abel. "Maybe I can talk your grandma into bringing you guys tomorrow," he said, looking down at him.
Abel nods his head a little. "Yeah, okay, daddy." He would rather have Jax bring them, as he already knows that Gemma isn't going to bring him and Tommy out here to visit their mommy. But he didn't say anything as he walked back to the truck.
Jax watches Abel walk back towards the truck, unsure of what just happened and why Abel's mood suddenly changed. He'll talk to Abel about it later. Right now, he needs to get the boys home and handle some club business.
Althea Jarry was looking through the Dr. Knowles murder case that Thyne Patterson brought her this morning. While she was going through the images and reading the police reports, Althea Jarry still couldn't figure out why nobody had made an arrest yet. If it was the Chinese who brutally murdered Dr. Knowles, then why wasn't Henry Lin behind bars? Something just didn't add up, and Althea was going to get to the bottom of it one way or the other.
Hearing a knock on her office door, Althea looked up from the case files. "Yes."
Eglee Candy opened the door and popped her head in. "Wayne Unser is here to see you."
Althea nods. "Yeah, okay."
Eglee moved to the side and let Wayne into Jarry's office.
Before Eglee closed the door, Unser looked over at her for a moment. "It's good to see you again," he said with a friendly smile.
Eglee nodded. "Yeah, you too," she said with a small smile as she closed the door, giving them some privacy.
Althea closed the case files and set them aside. "Mr. Unser, how can I help you?"
"Uh... Did you get a chance to talk to Patterson about me maybe helping out a bit?" Wayne asked as he sat down in front of her desk.
Althea leans back in her chair as she tilts her head to the side. "I got the impression from Thyne that you weren't interested."
Unser hesitated for a moment. "Oh well, I..." He then sighed deeply as he continued. "I've given it some more thought, and I would like to help in any way I can. By the way, where do you stand on this?"
Althea sat up straight as she placed both hands down on her desk. "Well, if you're worried that I see it as a threat, don't be. I know Charming has a very complicated, bloody history, and I'm not fooled by the Mayberry setting; I'm very aware of what happened to the last person sitting in this chair."
Wayne nods his head a little. "Right."
"I like the idea of having someone local to consult with."
Wayne let out a small chuckle. "Is that what I would be? A, uh... consultant?"
I believe the official title is Consulting Investigator, and it comes out of the county task force budget, so it doesn't cut into my luxurious perks. It's part-time pay, but Patterson got you on the county insurance plan. I'm sorry about the cancer.
Way snorted a small laugh. "Yeah, me too."
Althea nods as she hands him some forms. "Just fill those out, and Eglee can take your picture for the ID. You can carry, but you're going to have to supply your own gun." She then watches him for a moment. "Second thoughts?"
Wayne shook his head as he looked through the forms before looking up at her. "Uh, I wish," he said with a chuckle. "I'm somewhere in the trillions at this point."
Althea nods in understanding. "A terminal illness tends to do that."
"Constant state of self-evaluation."
"That sounds very unpleasant," Althea said, cringing a little.
Wayne chuckled a little. "You don't know half of it. I'm gonna want to see everything you have on the Tara Knowles murder."
"Why is that?" Althea asked in confusion.
"Just bringing myself up to speed. I just want to be the best consultant I can be."
"This is all I have so far," Althea said as she handed the case files to Wayne. "There's one Sons of Anarchy member we haven't been able to question... Ortega?"
"Ortiz. Juice."
"Right," Althea said with a nod. "Any idea where we can find him?"
Wayne shrugs his shoulders slightly. "These guys come and go all the time. Charters up and down the coast... he could be anywhere."
"You think he might know something?"
"About Tara?" Wayne asked. "I doubt it. Juice is kind of, uh... a child," he said with a light chuckle. "He's not too savvy."
"As opposed to the other leather-clad Mensans?" Althea asked with a smirk.
Wayne scoffed, shaking his head. "Oh, don't buy into the white trash myth, ma'am. These guys are not cretins. Jax Teller is formidable. As smart as he is dangerous." He warned her.
Althea nodded. "Good to know. I understand that Gemma Teller recently hired a new nanny to help with her grandsons."
"Yeah, Jennifer. She's a sweet girl. But if you're thinking about questioning her, don't."
"And why not?"
"Because she wouldn't know anything, and I think it's best to keep her out of it."
"Yeah, I'll keep her out of it and do me a favor. Take it easy, Mr. Unser. I don't want you to suddenly die on me," she said with a smirk.
"I'll try," Wayne said with a chuckle as he stood up from the chair he was sitting in. "You have a nice day, Sheriff," he said as he walked out of her office and closed the door behind him.
Wendy knocked lightly on Gemma's bedroom door as she walked in. "Hey, Jennifer said you wanted to talk to me," she said as she closed the door behind her. "Gemma, what's going on?"
Gemma walked up to Wendy, placing a hand on her hip. "Did you happen to tell Jax about Juice?"
Wendy shook her head. "No, I didn't say anything about Juice or that you're helping him. I kinda figured that you didn't want Jax to know. Why are you asking?"
"It's nothing really," Gemma said, waving her hand a little and brushing the whole thing off.
"Jax still doesn't think it's a good idea if I help out with the boys," Wendy said softly, looking down at the floor. "He still doesn't trust me around them, especially around Abel. He still thinks I'm going to mess up again."
"I can't say that I blame him. We all have our doubts, sweetheart, and you almost killed his first son. That sting of betrayal doesn't go away easily."
Wendy sighs deeply as she nods. "Yeah, I know, Gemma. But I just want him to know that I'm capable of taking care of my son, and that I've changed."
"You still want Abel to know the truth?"
Wendy shrugged. "At this point, Gemma, I don't even care if Abel knows the truth or not. I just want to be there for him and Thomas."
Gemma nods in understanding. "Yeah, I get that."
Just then, Gemma's bedroom door opened, and Jennifer popped her head in. "Sorry to interrupt, but Wayne Unser is here to talk to you, Gemma. He's waiting for you in the kitchen."
Gemma sighed. "Thanks. Tell him I'm coming out." Gemma said as she watched Jennifer close her bedroom door. She faced Wendy. "Just keep helping Jennifer with the boys. Don't worry about Jax. I'll talk to him."
Wendy nods a little. "Yeah, okay."
"Come on, let's go see what he wants," Gemma said as she placed her hand against Wendy's back and walked her out of her bedroom.
"Hey, bro," Jury said softly as he walked up to Jax, gave him a quick hug and a slap on the back before stepping back.
"I appreciate you coming," Jax said as he placed both hands into his pockets.
Jury nodded his head. "It's good to see you home, brother."
Quinn looked over at Jury's guys. "Hey, guys, follow me up here." He said as he led the two men away from Jax and Jury.
Jury looks at Jax for a moment. "I know how deep this is for you, brother. I just want to let you know that Indian Hills has your back. What happened to Tara... that shit should never happen. I'm sorry."
Jax nodded his head. "Yeah, thank you."
Jury let out a breath. "I just need to let my crew know what else you're gonna need from us. We've been doing some muling for the triads into Mexico."
Jax sighs deeply. "Look, Jury, striking back at the Chinese is Redwood's war. If you're worried about blowback reaching Nevada..."
"I'm here to help, Jax. I just need to know the game plan, brother."
"Mm-hmm." Jax said, nodding his head slightly, as he wasn't too sure if Jury should actually help or not.
Bobby then spoke up as he stood next to Jax. "We're gonna unravel Lin... take apart his business, fracture all his relationships. But for now, no one can know it's us. August Marks doesn't want us to trip up his gun expansion with some street war. And he cannot know that we're the ones gutting Lin. Black is not an enemy we want right now."
"It sounds ambitious. But where does it end?"
" I'm gonna wait til Lin's vulnerable, out of allies, and I'm gonna reach out, offer him a helping hand. Once I'm inside, and once I got his total trust, I'm gonna let him know that I was the one who ruined him. Then I'm gonna look around his table, at his men, his family, and I'm going to ask him who he wants spared. The first person he points to... that's who I'm killing, and then everyone else he cares about. I'm gonna let him live in the agony of that for a little while. And then I'm gonna end him...as slowly and painfully as possible." Jax explaining his plan to Jury.
Jury sighs. "I understand your personal need here, son. But the level of payback you're talking about pulls the club in a very different direction. The last time I heard you share your vision, you were talking about cutting the ties to the things that were killing us."
Jax just shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, well, I don't have a vision anymore. All I see is what's right in front of me." Jax said, not caring about some vision he once had. All he cared about was getting revenge for his wife's murder.
Hearing a car door close, they all looked over as they noticed two men standing next to an old, beat-up truck. "Is this the local muscle?" Chibs asked.
Jury nodded his head. "Yeah."
"Where did you find them?"
"From one of my whores. Don't worry, we can trust them."
"Get a twenty on Tig," Jax said as he looked over at Chibs.
" Yeah, alright." Chibs said as he pulled out his prepaid and walked away to call Tig.
"Hey brother, Lin's truck just pulled down a private road, local farm. It's too risky to follow him, man. No other way in or out." Tig said over the phone.
"Where are you?" Chibs asked.
Tig looks over at Ratboy. "Where are we? County 201..."
"It's Lower McCall... Lower McCall is the closest cross-street; it's about two hours east." Ratboy answered loud enough for Chibs to hear.
"Did you get that?" Tig asked Chibs.
Chibs nodded his head. "Yeah, stay out of sight. We're on our way." He said as he hung up and walked back to Jax, letting him know what's up.
"Hey Jackie boy, the truck just pulled off a private road, a farm, just off the 201." Chibs said as he placed his prepaid back into his pocket.
Jax nodded. "Let's do it."
"Yeah," Chibs said in agreement.
"Jury?" Jax asked, looking over at Jury.
Jury nodded his head, looking over at Chibs. "Let's hit up Chibs and see if they'll sell us some of those bales."
Chibs shrugged his shoulders. "Sure," he said as he followed Jury.
Wendy walked into the dining room where Gemma, Nero, and Jennifer were all sitting. Jennifer had just put Thomas down for his afternoon nap after she fed him and changed him. Abel was in his room drawing another picture.
"You know, you shouldn't be smoking around the boys," Wendy said with a sigh as she got herself a cup of coffee and joined them at the table. Just a few seconds ago, Wendy had gone to check on Thomas when she heard him coughing slightly.
"I keep telling her that," Nero said as he glanced at Gemma.
Gemma shrugged. "I got Abel down to a half a pack a day," she said jokingly.
"Oh...all right." Wendy said with a snort as she took a sip of her coffee and sat down next to Jennifer. "Oh, hey, did you know that Abel is starting pre-k?" Wendy asked, placing a fat envelope on the table as she set her cup down.
Gemma nodded. "Yeah, Tara mentioned it once or twice. Is this place any good?" Gemma asked as she picked up the envelope for a moment.
Wendy nodded. "Yeah, Pilgrim Grove. It's really progressive."
"Meaning?" Gemma asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Wendy sighs deeply." Meaning that he should go, Gemma. This isn't about the family being lazy. This is the beginning of his education," Wendy said as she took another sip of her coffee.
Jennifer nodded in agreement. "Wendy's right, Gemma. Abel can't stay in the house all day. Besides, I think it would be good for him to go to school. He can learn new things and make new friends." She shrugged a little.
Gemma sighs deeply because she really doesn't like the idea of letting Abel out of their sight. But she knows Wendy and Jennifer have a point, and as much as she hates to admit it, Gemma knows that it's what Tara would want for Abel. "Yeah, okay."
"Well, the deposit is due today. You should go and check it out."
Gemma quickly shook her head. "No, no. You go; I'll write the check."
"I don't have a car," Wendy said, silently reminding Gemma that she had left her car with Juice to use so he could finally get out of Charming.
"This Pilgrim... it's uh, it's by Quail Lake, right?" Nero asked.
Wendy nodded. "Yeah."
"I'm heading over to Stockton, and I can give you a lift." Nero offered Wendy a ride to the school.
"Yeah? Thanks, I appreciate it," Wendy said, accepting Nero's offer for a ride.
Gemma nods her head as she got up from the table." Good you guys go check out the school and I'm going to go out back and uh, give the azaleas cancer." She said with a small chuckle as she heads for the back door.
Jennifer raised her brows in question as she looked at Nero for a moment. "What's up with her?" Jennifer asked, unable to help but wonder why Gemma was acting so weird.
Nero just shrugged. "I wouldn't worry about it too much. She just has a lot on her mind right now. She'll be fine though. Besides, she kinda grows on you." He said with a chuckle.
Jennifer wasn't sure what to say about that, really. But ever since Jax came home from prison, Gemma has been kind of distant, and Jennifer wasn't sure why. "Yeah, you're probably right," she said as she got up from the table. "I'm going to check on Abel."
Opening the door of Wendy's apartment, Unser walked in and closed the door behind him. As he walked further into the apartment, he noticed that it was clean. This was confusing for him since he remembered that the place had been a mess the last time he was there, which was when he was helping Gemma get Wendy into rehab.
Walking into the kitchen, Unser started to look around to see what was going on. Opening the fridge and cabinets, he noticed that they had been fully stocked with food. "What the hell is going on here?" he asked himself.
To confirm his suspicion, Unser walked towards the closet. Opening the door, Unser noticed a duffel bag sitting on the floor. Kneeling down, Unser sighed as he pulled the zipper of the duffel bag open. He then pulled out a Sons Cut. "What the hell?" He then froze when he heard a gun cock behind his head.
Unser slowly turns around and looks up at Juice. "Is there anything you need to tell me, Son?"
Juice sighed as he removed his gun from Unser's head, walked over to the table, sat down, and set his gun down. "How'd you know I was here?"
Unser got up from the floor, closed the closet door, walked towards the table, and sat across from Juice. "I didn't. I noticed that the place was clean when I walked in, and when I saw a fully stocked fridge and cabinets, I knew something was up. Of course, then I saw your backpack in the closet. It seems out of place. Are you uh... hiding from the club? Is it about Tara?"
Juice shook his head. "No, old sins."
"Then, how'd you land here? Wendy just got out, and the only other people with keys are me and Gemma," Unser said, still not understanding why or how Juice ended up here. But it looks like he's going to have to talk to Gemma about it.
Juice just sat there in silence. Unser then sighed. "What are you doing here, son? It's obvious that you're hiding for a reason."
"You can go now."
Unser shook his head. "I have no place I need to be." He shrugged.
Juice furrowed his brow. "Seriously?"
Unser nod his head." Yeah."
"What if I change my mind?"
"You won't." Unser said, shaking his head. "What will Jax do if he finds you?"
"What do you think?"
Unser nodded his head once more. "Right, old sin. It must be a bad one. So, you got a plan? To get out of Charming? A destination?" He asked.
"What do you care?" Juice asked, sighing deeply and shaking his head. "No, not really. I was supposed to be gone already."
"You want my help?"
Juice raised his brow for a moment. "You're offering to help me? Why?"
Unser nods his head. "Yeah, I am. Besides, I'd rather not see you die, son."
Juice sighs deeply and nods. "Alright, you can help out."
Pulling into the school parking lot, Wendy was about to get out of Nero's car when she stopped and looked over at him. "You coming in with me?"
Nero shook his head. "No, I've got to get over to the port. I'll pick you up in an hour or so."
Wendy sighed, rolling her eyes. "Awe, just come in with me. Look, Gemma could flip on this whole school thing, and I'm gonna need some backup. Besides, she listens to you, and it won't take long. Please?" Wendy asked, hoping she could convince him to go in with her.
Nero sighed, nodding his head. "Alright, Um, but after this, you're gonna have to take a ride with me over to the port in Stockton," he said as he got out of his car and closed the door behind him.
Wendy shrugged her shoulders. "That's cool. Maybe we can go visit all my old drug dealers." She said with a laugh, noticing the look on Nero's face. "Relax, man. I was only kidding." She said as they headed towards the school office.
"So, who do we say that we are?"
Wendy shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. The nanny and the gardener?"
Nero snorted, shaking his head. "I'm going to pretend that you didn't even say that," he said when he heard Wendy chuckling as he held the door open for her and followed her into the school office.
Gemma was in the office with Chucky, doing some paperwork when she looked up and noticed Unser walking into her office. "Oh, hey Wayne, need to talk some more?" She asked as she went back to her paperwork.
"Where's the little monster?" Unser asked as he noticed Abel and Thomas weren't around.
"They're at home with Jennifer."
Unser nodded his head. "Hey, Chucky, can you give us a minute?" He asked as he wanted to talk to Gemma alone.
Chucky looks over at Gemma. "You okay with that?"
Gemma nods. "Yeah, we'll be fine."
Chucky shrugged his shoulders. "Alright, I'll be outside. But if you need anything, just holler." Chucky said as he walked out of the office, closing the door behind him.
Gemma chuckled. "He's very protective."
"Unser snorts." "Yeah, I can see that," he said as he sat down on the small couch. "You uh lied to me this morning, Gemma. I know you've been hiding Juice at Wendy's, and I know you've been helping him hide from the club."
Gemma sighs as she shakes her head. "Shit, how'd you know he was there?"
"Well, after our conversation this morning, I decided to check on Wendy's place for her. To my surprise, I found Juice in the apartment, pointing his gun at the back of my head," he said as he sat up straight.
"What'd he say?" Gemma asked softly.
" Not much at first. But he told me why you were helping him. He's all twisted up, Gem, and I think it's a good thing that you're helping him. I mean, you're putting friendship over the club rule, and I know that choice didn't come easy."
Gemma shook her head. "No, it wasn't. Thank you, Wayne." Gemma said sincerely as she looked over at him for a moment.
Unser nods his head as he gets up from the couch. "Just let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I'm tired of counting bodies, and I don't want to add Juice to the body count. I'm going to lay down for a little bit." He says as he heads out of Gemma's office.
"Yeah, bring you some tea?" Gemma offered.
Unser nods his head. "Yeah, thanks. I would love that." He said as he turns around and walks back towards his trailer to lie down and get some rest.
After a long day, Jennifer was about to head home when she noticed Jax pulling up into the driveway. "You're home kinda late," she said as she watched him get off his Dyna. "Busy day at work?"
"Yeah, something like that. Is my mom inside?" Jax asked as he looked over at the house for a moment before looking back at Jennifer again.
"Um, no, I guess she's still at the office working. But Wendy is inside, though."
Jax sighed, nodding his head. "Yeah, okay. Are you going home already?" he asked, noticing Jennifer was getting ready to leave.
"Yeah, it's getting late, and I have a few errands to run in the morning before I start my shift here. Good night, Jax." She said as she was about to get behind the wheel.
"Hey, why don't I follow you home?" Jax offered.
Jennifer shook her head. "Jax, you don't have to follow me home. I do appreciate the offer, Jax, but I think I can find my way home." She said, declining Jax's offer.
But of course, Jax wasn't going to take "no" for an answer. "Sorry, darlin, but I'll feel a lot better if I make sure you get home safely. Besides, didn't anyone ever tell you it's not safe to drive alone at night?" He asked with a chuckle.
Jennifer threw her head back as she groaned and then nodded. "Alright, you can follow me home. But don't make a habit of it." Jennifer said with a smirk as she got behind the wheel and closed her car door. Hearing Jax's Dyna start up, Jennifer pulled out of the driveway, heading home with Jax following behind.
