Chapter 2

Sam had been taken to Rampart General Hospital. She regained consciousness upon entering the Emergency Room. She was wheeled into the E.R. on a stretcher. Sam was a bit groggy as she came around.

"What happened?" she asked with a pounding headache.

Dr. Kelly Brackett was on hand as her tending physician.

Roy rode in the back of the ambulance with her as Johnny drove the rescue truck. He spoke. "It's okay, Sam. You are going to be okay." he sighed relieved as she regained consciousness.

"Where am I, Grandpa? The engine?" she squinted as the light hurt her eyes.

Dr. Brackett gave a cockeyed look at Roy as Sam called him grandpa. He assumed she was simply confused. "What happened, Roy?" he asked.

Roy stated traded glances with Johnny as neither knew how to explain what they had endured.

"The engine had a power surge and initiated. I'm sure it broke containment." Sam rightly figured.

Johnny added, "That's not all it did."

Slowly Sam's eyes came into focus. She then got a good look at those around her. She spied a nurse in a white uniform that looked out of style. She noticed the tall, dark haired doctor who was tending to her. She looked at Roy and Johnny. She noticed they were rather young. She pondered. "I'm pretty sure my engine can not do cellular regeneration." she noted.

"I'm Dr. Brackett. Can you tell me your name?" he asked starting his assessment.

"Doctor Samantha DeSoto." she stated. "I don't go by doctor. I do have a PhD." she added.

"DeSoto?" he asked and then looked at Roy.

Roy asked. "Is she going to be alright?"

"I need to finish my exam." the doctor told him. "She a relative of yours, Roy?" He noticed the similar features in the face and jaw.

"She's my…um…" he looked to Johnny for help.

"Sister." he injected. "Sam is Roy's sister." He knew no one would believe the truth nor did he have any idea how to even explain it.

"Sister?" she asked bewildered. "Sister!"

Roy nodded. "That's right. I'm your big brother now."

"You're my grand…" she cocked her head as her mind began to recall the event. "You and Uncle Johnny were right next to it…" she gasped.

The doctor asked. "Next to what?"

"My engine." she told him. "How come…?" she pointed to the pair of young paramedics.

Roy stated. "I don't know. I know you can figure it out."

Dr. Brackett asked. "What are you talking about? What was my patient exposed to?"

Sam stated, "It was a power surge. Is the engine still in one piece?"

Johnny shrugged. "We have no idea. Cap found you on the floor by the fire engine."

"Fire engine?" she asked confused. "How did a fire engine get there?"

Roy stated. "Sam. It's Friday, June 20th, 1975."

She blinked. "It is?"

He nodded.

She gave a sigh. "Now the how the hell did that happen?"

"What happen?" Dr. Brackett asked.

"I'll have to examine my thesis." she concluded. She shook herself gaining her bearings. "Okay, what is the current situation?" She looked at Roy and Johnny.

Johnny stated, "Well…we're like this" he pointed towards his young face, "you are here with us and the Station 51 is still active."

"Oh' boy." she winced.

Nurse McCall stood observing. She asked the paramedics. "Were you two exposed to this engine too?"

The pair slowly nodded.

"Are you okay? Do you need a check over?' she asked concerned.

The pair looked at one another again debating.

Sam figured, "You must have been hit with a huge frequency wave." she cocked her head and looked at the pair. "You remember everything?"

They both nodded.

"Yup." Roy confirmed.

"Like living my life all over again." Johnny added.

"You were imprinted by the frequency wave." she concluded. "I must have hit the gravitational wave itself when I tried to cut the power."

The doctor stood still confused. "Excuse me?"

"They get a do over. I hit the gravitational wave and it pushed me physically…" she then closed her eyes as her mind put the final piece into place. "Through time." Her head hung down and she placed her face in the palms of her hands. She wagged her head back and forth. "I fucked this up beyond all recognition." She sighed. "So much for the job at SpaceX. Oh' my god did I screw up." She looked up from her hands nearly in tears. "I have no idea how to fix any of this."

Roy soothed. "It's okay, Sammy. I'm right here with you. My and Johnny are both right here with you." He placed a comforting arm around her.

Dr. Brackett stated. "You two know what she is talking about?"

Roy nodded. "One minute I'm an old man helping my granddaughter on a project and the next, I'm young again and living my life."

"I want to run some test on all three of you." Dr. Brackett stated concerned.

"Fine." Roy agreed.

Johnny nodded. "Fine with us."

Later That Day

All the test that Dr. Brackett ran on Roy and Johnny came back normal. He did find some anomalies in Sam's blood work and some sore muscles from her being physically hit by the gravitational wave that pushed her through time. He requested she stay overnight in the hospital for observation.

Roy and Johnny returned to work in Rescue 51. They spoke of the situation as Roy drove.

Johnny mentioned. "You know. This is a unique opportunity for us, Roy. We both remember our lives before we were hit by that frequency wave from Sam's engine. We got a chance to do it all over again."

"I know." he nodded. "I just realized my wife is still alive and my kids are still kids."

Johnny cocked his head. "That's right. Sam's dad is a child!" he gasped realizing.

"He is." Roy agreed thinking of his young son.

Johnny puckered in thought. "When Sam gets released tomorrow, where will she stay?"

"With me!" Roy insisted as if it was obvious.

He shook his head. "But her father is a kid. And how are you going to pass her off as your sister to your wife?"

"I'm sure we will be fine." he figured.

He grimaced. "I know I would feel real funny if my dad was suddenly a kid."

He gave a sigh. "She will be fine."

"Maybe she should stay with me." Johnny suggested. "I don't have anyone and there is plenty of room."

Roy gasped. "Are you kidding? You think I am going to let my granddaughter stay with you?"

"She's stayed with me before." he countered shocked. "She used to go camping with us and when she was home from college and needed a place…"

"That was different." Roy insisted. "You were old! You were like a second grandpa to her."

"Uncle." he corrected. "She calls me 'Uncle Johnny.' She always has." he smirked.

He reasoned. "She's young. She's only twenty-four. You are…" he sneered. "Twenty-five."

"Mentally, I'm seventy five." he countered. "And I watched her grow up. I watched her dad grow up. I'm her uncle in her eyes. She can stay with me."

"I don't like that." he confessed.

Johnny gave a expecting look. "Got a better idea?"

"No," he scowled. "We are going to live our lives all over again and she's stuck here with us. She needs to find a job." he figured.

"Sam's a genius. She can find a job." Johnny soothed.

"She doesn't have any credentials here." Roy reminded him. "Even if she did have her wallet, everything would the wrong dates. Did you look at your wallet?"

"No," he replied in thought. He then dug his wallet out of his pocket and opened it up. "Let's see, my driver's license…" he lifted the article. "We didn't have pictures on them back then." he recalled. "No credit cards. Social security card is white. Money…" he looked closer at the bill. "Boy, did they ever change that."

"She doesn't have any of that here." Roy told him. "All she's got is us. We have to watch out for her."

"I guess if a genius inventor needs someone to watch out for her then two old firefighter-paramedics will work." Johnny concluded confidently.

Roy confessed. "I think she let us hang out and help her because she felt sorry for us. It was our old station and we are both lonely old men."

"Not lonely. Bored!" Johnny concluded. "We were bored old men. She needs us now. We're here for her."

"We are here for her." Roy agreed.
