Can't Shake Me
"Funny seeing you here," Skye told Beckett.
"I wasn't expecting it," she answered. "But we were looking into the vic's cellphone app. It tracked his movements for the last two days."
"Just then?" Skye asked in surprise.
Shaking her head Beckett explained, "He's been here in the Hamptons since then. He's from Staten Island."
"Is he with any paranormal group?" Skye then said.
"We don't know," Castle said, walking up to them with Mary next to him. "We've only looked at the cell phone information."
"And you think he was murdered here," Skye said slowly.
"He may have been," Beckett said. "Judging by the time of death Thayer told us."
"And that he doesn't need to do the full autopsy to get?" Mary then inquired.
"No," Beckett said simply.
"Okay," Skye said. She glanced around the room they were in and said, "It's funny how there's absolutely nothing in here now."
"I'm surprised you went along with this," Mary said, since the chief had asked them to wait in the room while he and two officers were searching the building and grounds.
Something came to Skye then and she asked, "Is one of the officers Fox?"
"Fox and Bernier," Beckett answered while she was nodding.
"Did you want to talk to her?" Castle asked.
"Just see how she's doing with Harrington," Skye explained. "Though now isn't really the time to be honest."
"No, not if they find where Cobb was shot," Castle said. He then said, "The building does have a fire escape."
"I'm sure Brad will look out for anything there," Beckett said.
"You thought of that?" Castle asked.
"I did; as soon as she told us about where the recent victim was shot," Skye commented. "Though you said he was shot in the morning?"
"Yeah, there's that," Castle replied before they turned at Darnley joining them.
"Nothing outside, which really didn't surprise me," the carpenter said to the four questioning faces looking at him. "He's talking to the workers to see if there's anywhere… hidden or underground."
"Underground," Castle said.
"What're you thinking?" Beckett asked, looking him with a slight frown.
"Yeah, it was a legend but David told me about it when I was moved into the house after I'd bought it," Castle told his wife though he quickly looked at the others too. "He said that in the twenties there were speakeasies."
"I know there were too," Skye said, her wife nodding next to her. "And I don't even live here."
"Not the two buildings downtown," Castle said, shaking his head. "Underground," he said firmly, not surprised when there was an immediate response to that from his wife.
"And you think there was one here? It was a manor," Beckett reminded him.
"Yeah, Josiah Cecil's in the twenties," Castle said. When there was no reaction he couldn't help saying in slight annoyance, "He was rumored to have one of those speakeasies."
"It would be worth a shot, especially since he was murdered during the day," Skye commented, not surprised seeing Beckett appeared doubtful.
"Are you getting anything?" the writer asked.
"Not now," Skye said honestly. "They're still here but not with me."
"Then… alright but you have to tell Brad," Beckett told her husband firmly.
"Not a problem," Castle replied easily before he was turning with her at the others walking up to them.
"I have your word you guys aren't going to say anything to anyone else about this case right?" Brad asked the four men.
Shaking his head Zak said, "I'd like to film the house once you wrap things up, but we won't mention the recent victim."
"Alright, we found nothing outside and Fox is going to get a copy of the security camera footage from the time Cobb's phone reached this building," Brad said. "So I think… yes?" he started to say before trailing off and asking Skye that question since she was raising her hand slightly to get his attention.
"We had a conversation about tunnels while we were waiting for you," the investigator explained.
Brad frowned and said, "It's a myth," glancing at Castle.
"I said that," the writer rushed to say. "But I think we should search at least."
"You're lucky that was my next step," Brad commented. "And I'm telling you guys this because we need help, the basement is large."
"Do we have permission to do that?" Billy asked.
"We do," Brad replied. "Though they weren't exactly happy about the police going around."
"In the basement?" Mary couldn't help asking.
Shaking her head, Skye said, "That would be Mr. Cecil."
"He's influencing them?" Jay asked.
"A bit," Skye replied. "And now I see why I was panicking when we heard Cloet returning."
"Cloet?" Beckett said.
"The head librarian," Skye answered swiftly. "She assisted them on Sunday and us just now. But I found… I didn't have a chance to tell you. He took something from here, the diary of Anais' mother in law."
"Oh, I better get CSU to hurry processing that," Brad said. "They said they found an old diary in a lockbox."
"Yeah, better return it," Skye said with a nod. "But I was texting you to let you know he'd been here before."
"We saw that in his coordinates," Beckett said. "Are we heading downstairs now?"
"We will," Brad said, motioning them to follow him before they were going to an employee's only marked room. Revealing the employee's lounge he told the others, "There's a door here. They use a little of the basement for storage, but I was told it's mostly the second floor."
"We know," Castle said, motioning to himself and his wife. "There was a flood here in the seventies and it was a close call with some books."
"Alright," Brad said since they were all silent as they went through another door and down a staircase. He counted everyone and said, "We're even so we're going to pair off and I don't have radios so yell or use your phone if you can at all."
Walking together away from the others, Castle told his wife, "Are you mad at me?"
"No," Beckett said. "I just hope you're right though."
"Believe me, I'm thinking the same too," Castle replied before they'd reached a room. He turned back and said, "How did we end up here?"
"Good question," Skye said, walking up to them with Mary.
"We're supposed to split up," Castle told the two women.
"Yeah, I heard that too," Skye commented before she opened the door of the room and slipped inside.
"Should we leave?" Beckett asked, watching the investigator going easily to the light switch.
"No, I'd like some backup… just in case," Skye said before she paused. "You do have your weapon right?"
"I do," Beckett said before they were watching the investigator circling the room.
"He's here right now," Skye said eventually. "He's a little faint on that day but said he was here one minute and outside watching his body being transported the next," she added, not surprised when Castle was responding to that first.
"And the killers?" he asked.
"I'm not sure that's plural," Skye said.
"Carrying him? He was six feet tall and-" Castle started to say doubtfully.
"I saw him," Skye interrupted. "But he was carried by one person."
"Fireman's carry?" Beckett asked. When the investigator nodded she said, "And he was watching from above."
"He was, but…" Skye started to say before she was trailing off and looking around her.
"What do you have?" Mary asked her wife in a rush.
"The tunnel," Skye said, whirling and hurrying over to the left corner of the wall. She pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight before she paused and said, "Call Brad, I see a seam here."
"I'm surprised they didn't say no to us just now," Brad said, looking at the trapdoor they'd managed to get open.
"You realize you're going to have to investigate the employees here," Aaron said.
"Yeah, with resealing this door…" the chief began. Brad shook himself and then said, "Okay, I'll head down first, Fox you'll follow and then just Beckett, Castle and Darnley."
"And me," Skye said firmly. She wasn't surprised when the chief was turning to her and she looked at him pointedly before he was responding with a sigh.
"Do you need to go too?" Brad asked Mary.
"It would be better if I did," the doctor said with a slight incline of her head.
"Alright," Brad said, moving to see the ladder. He started climbing down and once he'd reached the floor at the bottom of the tunnel caught the large flashlight Fox dropped down to him. "It's clear," he said, shining the light ahead of him. "And this is the terminus so we can only go in one direction."
"Likely to that speakeasy," Castle couldn't help saying before they were watching Fox heading down the ladder. He let his wife go first before he was hurrying to follow and then looking around since they all had flashlights.
"You wouldn't know where exactly that speakeasy is do you?" Brad asked his friend once Darnley, the last of them, was with them.
"No, it was supposed to be a legend," Castle said. "Not far though," he added. "It never said there were tunnels all over, just the two underground."
"Okay," Brad said before he turned quickly to Skye.
"He remembers this now," the investigator said. "And I'd like you to allow me to lead."
Studying her for a moment though the light was dim on their faces, Brad finally nodded and said, "Alright, but I'm walking with you. Fox go with Mary, you three walk however you want but I want someone who's armed to bring up the rear." He watched the others shuffle to fall into line and once they were ready he turned to Skye and said, "Alright, we're following you."
"Good," Skye said firmly before they started to walk. She wasn't surprised when they reached the first door that the chief was looking at it in passing, but since she continued he didn't say anything. But after they kept passing them she waited patiently when he cleared his throat before he finally began to speak.
"I know you're leading us," Brad began. "But I can't help but notice a lot of doors."
"Yeah," Skye said. "They're just storage, for the hooch."
"Who's telling you that?" Castle couldn't help asking.
"Duncan," Skye answered easily. "He remembers this place now, he was writing about it. He was here because someone told him there was at least one tunnel and it would help him in his research."
"So he was lured here," Beckett said.
"It sounds like it," Skye replied. "But he doesn't know if it was on purpose beforehand or spur of the moment. He doesn't remember." She then said, "Ah, finally."
Glancing ahead of them, Beckett saw two large doors that appeared to be heavy and she said, "Do you have anything to open that."
"It won't be locked," Skye called back. When they had reached the doors she reached up to the latch and opened it before she pressed on a panel in the wood. Reaching inside she pulled at the lever there before saying, "Duncan saw this happen and once we go inside is about as far as his memory goes for the moment."
"Hopefully there'll be something here," Darnley called from the back of the line before they watched Brad step in first and he called to them shortly after.
"Come in, there's a light switch here but I need more of your flashlights to make sure this isn't going to burst into flames first before I turn it on," the chief said. Brad watched the others walk into the room and said, "Over here on the wall, follow those wires."
"Kind of a shoddy setup," Skye said as they were all doing so with their flashlights.
"But it looks like it's okay," Beckett said.
"How? There was a flood in the seventies," Castle commented.
"I don't think it reached the room this trap door is in," Darnley said slowly. "Or," he corrected himself quickly when he realized what he'd said, "It was sealed and the killer actually did reseal it."
"Again, check on the employees and past employees," Castle told his friend.
Nodding, Brad hit the light switch and watched as the bulbs in the room flickered to life before he heard his friend letting out a short laugh.
"David's going to go nuts with this," Castle couldn't help saying.
"Did his grandfather tell him?" Beckett asked her husband.
"Yeah, he went to this one," Castle commented shortly before they were turning off their flashlights and looked around again at the long bar and tables that filled the room. "No liquor," he commented.
"Do you think Cecil would have left that much?" Darnley asked since the storage for bottles along the back wall of the bar was massive.
"Good point," Castle said. "And I think they said this closed down as soon as the Amendment was repealed so why not take it?"
"He doesn't remember this at all?" Mary asked her wife, watching her closely. She became concerned when she saw that Skye's hands were clenching and loosening repeatedly and she went to her, embracing her gently saying, "Don't let him-"
"He's not, he just remembered what happened when he stepped inside," Skye said, not surprised when Brad immediately walked over to her. "The lights came on and now he recalls the last thing he ever saw was that bar."
"The killer didn't speak or anything?" Darnley asked.
Shaking her head Skye replied, "All he remembers is the shot."
"Skye?" Brad asked after he was looking at the bar. "You said the last thing was that bar… where was he exactly."
Not responding, the investigator walked over to it and then climbed up on the step before she leaned over to peer over the other side of the counter. "There's blood here," she called. "He was back here looking at how far it went in either direction when he was shot."
"Okay, I better get CSU in here," Brad said, helping her down.
"That doesn't solve anything though," Castle commented. When his friend turned to him he said, "How was the body taken out?"
Skye wasn't surprised when the others were looking at her as soon as that question was asked and said, "To be honest I have no real idea. He only looked down at his body being moved but let me look around the room with him and see if it doesn't jog his memory at all." She wasn't surprised when everyone was silent while she was walking about, but she finally stopped and looked back at them and shook her head saying, "It wasn't here."
"What about one of the storage rooms?" Beckett suggested.
"I think that's the best bet," Skye said, nodding her head. She went to the door and she stepped up to the first door before she paused.
"I have gloves on," Brad said since the investigator was looking at him. He went to the door and opened it before he stepped inside and paused as the beam from his flashlight hit a flight of stairs.
"That's it," Skye said. "There should be a way out there; the killer used it."
"Stay here," Brad told them before he was going to the steps. He was careful on the first and seeing it taking his weight he continued to the top, the others shining their lights at the ceiling of the room. "She's right," Brad said. "There's another trap door here."
"Are you going to try it?" Castle asked.
"I'd be crazy to," Brad said. "CSU needs to take a look at all of this." Though he was tempted to see where he would end up outside, he turned and said, "We need to get out of here."
"He said he was going to test that door as soon as the room was looked at."
"I know, I know," Skye said. "It's more Duncan, he's frustrated at not knowing." She stopped pacing and said to Beckett, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," she said quickly. "But I had… an uneasy feeling there." Beckett glanced at the GA men and said, "You should try and investigate there."
"I wish we could but that's going to take a while," Zak said. He was about to speak again when Mary was letting out a short scream and they all turned to find Brad appearing from the ground before he was jumping out and speaking a little grimly and brushing his hands and arms off at the same time.
"Found it, and right at the edge of one of the security camera's range," Brad told the others.
"A blind spot?" Castle asked.
"No, just barely in view," Brad replied. "I just finished watching the footage before I was called down by CSU and they let me try and see where we were." He looked at the cars in the parking lot near the grass where he'd come out of and said, "They had a good setup."
"They did," Castle said.
"What're you thinking?" Beckett asked her husband.
Castle glanced at her before he said, "The Cecil family, does anyone know if there's anyone descended from Josiah Cecil?"
"No idea but I already had the same idea," Brad assured him, watching CSU climbing out of the tunnel behind him. "And as you said we're about to talk to the employees."
"And since a lot of officers just showed up we're going to have to leave?" Darnley guessed.
"Yeah, but it is time for lunch anyway," Brad said. "So you guys are all set to… go," he started to say, trailing off when Skye was suddenly leaving them. "Where's she going?"
"I think to talk to Fox," Beckett said, trying not to smile since she could easily tell where her friend was intending to go.
"Skye," Fox said, startled at the investigator rushing up to her. "Can I help you?"
"Yeah, I have no idea if I'll be seeing you after this," Skye said. "I just wanted to see how you and Mia were doing."
"Good," Fox replied with a nod. "We're good."
"Your first Valentine's Day coming up," Skye said. When the officer nodded she smiled and said, "Sorry, I can't help wondering since I was around when your relationship began."
"We remind you of you and your wife?" Fox said, unable to help smiling while she nodded behind the investigator.
Turning and seeing the doctor walking up to them, Skye said, "A bit."
"We're enjoying our relationship, living together," Fox said. "And I'm falling in love with her… rapidly."
"I wouldn't be afraid of that," Mary said.
"She's right," Skye added swiftly. She smiled and then said, "Don't hesitate to tell her."
"I haven't," Fox assured them before they were smiling at her. "You're not surprised?"
"To be honest not really," Skye answered after she and her wife had shared a look.
"It was just this past Saturday actually," Fox commented. She couldn't help smiling again and said, "Spur of the moment."
"And she responded?" Mary asked.
"She did," Fox replied. Seeing the women exchanging another look she couldn't help saying, "We're just going to that point so far."
"It's not a surprise," Mary said reassuringly. "Since you're living together," she added before she watched her wife giving her card to the officer.
"That has my e-mail on it, keep in touch in case we don't see you again before we head back home," Skye was explaining.
"Of course, thanks," Fox said with a nod before she said goodbye to them and walked away. Shaking herself when one of her colleagues called to her, she hurried over to reenter the library though she was thinking of her girlfriend and the next step they'd taken in their relationship during the past weekend.
"Okay," Harrington was saying in laughter while she was swimming away. "I didn't really agree to Marco Polo."
"Who said anything about playing that?" Fox asked jokingly, going after her. She wasn't surprised when Harrington was merely giving her a look and she couldn't help herself, kissing her lightly on the lips. When her girlfriend was responding she moved to kiss her again, harder and for a lot longer before they were carefully parting.
"We should get ready for dinner," Harrington said once she felt she could speak.
Fox only nodded before she followed the director out of the pool and they dried off in silence. Moving up to their room she was about to grab her clothes when her girlfriend was stopping her. Seeing the slightly concerned expression on her face she told her with a smile, "I don't mind eating here," not surprised when she was quick to respond.
"I just wanted to make sure," Harrington replied. "We stayed here last weekend too."
"That one was my fault," Fox said jokingly. "No, don't worry, next weekend I'm off both days so let's head out for something downtown on Saturday night."
"Does that mean I'm taking care of reservations?" Harrington asked with a smile.
"I told you I'm taking care of Valentine's dinner so…" Fox replied easily. She smiled herself when her girlfriend was laughing and wrapping her arms around her. She responded in turn, though she was holding her clothes as well and once they parted from their kiss she told her, "Are you ready?"
"Yeah," Harrington said easily before they were moving into their bathroom.
Showering together, Fox wasn't surprised when her girlfriend insisted on washing her body but was pleased since she was able to do the same for Harrington. Though they caressed at one another a little they didn't do anything else and were leaving the stall to dry off and dress.
"Dinner should be here," Harrington said when she was walking out of the closet into the bedroom. "And-"
"I'll grab it," Fox said when the director was cut off by the doorbell ringing. When she left the room she glanced behind her to find Harrington following and she couldn't help smiling to herself before she made her way to the front door. The bag with their order was swiftly taken to the kitchen and they were taking everything out since they'd decided on Thai food that night.
"Okay," Harrington said, walking into the living room with two glasses of wine. "I think that's it. I hope that's it."
"It is," Fox said, smiling over the back of the couch at her. "Sit."
