The Price of Curiosity

After their midnight adventure, Rose and Scorpius felt more connected than ever. They shared a secret now—a hidden room, ancient symbols, and the hint of something waiting for them within the castle's stone walls. But as the days passed, the memory of that night began to tug at Rose. She couldn't shake the feeling that they had only scratched the surface of something much larger, a mystery that was somehow tied to her.

The next morning dawned misty and cold, and the Great Hall was buzzing with the excitement of a new day. Rose and Scorpius found their usual seats at the Slytherin table, piling their plates with warm toast and eggs. But Rose's mind was elsewhere, drifting back to the pedestal and the whispering voices she thought she'd heard.

Scorpius seemed to sense her distraction. "Rose?" he asked, his brow furrowing. "You're awfully quiet today."

She blinked, focusing on him. "Oh, sorry. I was just thinking…about that room."

Scorpius gave a conspiratorial smile. "Me too. I've been wondering what those symbols meant. Maybe they're part of the Hogwarts founders' magic?"

Rose nodded thoughtfully, her appetite forgotten. "There's a lot of history in Slytherin—old, powerful magic. It wouldn't surprise me if some of it lingered here, hidden away." She hesitated, lowering her voice. "But that room felt like more than just history. It felt personal, somehow."

Scorpius tilted his head, studying her. "Do you think it's connected to your family?"

Rose looked down, a faint sense of unease creeping over her. She'd grown up hearing stories about her lineage, the weight of her family name, and the heroics of her father. Yet there was always something about her past that felt…incomplete, like a half-remembered dream she could never quite grasp.

"Maybe," she murmured, glancing at Scorpius with a hesitant smile. "Or maybe I'm just overthinking things."

Scorpius opened his mouth to reply but was interrupted as a shadow fell across the table. They looked up to find Albus Potter standing there, his green eyes flashing with curiosity.

"Mind if I join you?" James asked, gesturing to the seat across from them.

Scorpius scooted over, making room as James settled in. Though James was in Gryffindor, he, Rose, and Scorpius had been raised together and had an easy friendship, and James often wandered over to join them when he needed a break from the Gryffindor table.

"Hey, Rose," James wiggled his eyebrows and said with a grin. "I hear you and Scorpius are making waves already. Slytherin's buzzing with rumors about you two sneaking around at night."

Rose flushed, glancing at Scorpius, who looked equally mortified. "We weren't sneaking," she muttered, hoping to play it off. "Just…exploring."

James laughed, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hogwarts is the best place for that. My dad always says he never even discovered half the castle's secrets while he was here."

Scorpius leaned forward, intrigued. "Your dad must know loads about Hogwarts, though. Did he ever tell you any of the secrets he found?"

James shrugged, glancing around as if to make sure no one else could overhear. "Only a few. He said there were passages and hidden rooms, some dangerous, some not. And then, of course, there's the Forbidden Forest. He said he had more encounters with the creatures in there than he'd like to admit."

Rose shivered, imagining the dark forest she'd only seen from a distance. The ancient trees loomed in her mind, shrouded in mist and shadows, filled with unknown creatures.

"Do you think there are secret rooms connected to each founder?" she asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

James looked thoughtful. "It wouldn't surprise me. I know there's at least one room dedicated to Gryffindor—though it's nearly impossible to find. Then of course there's the chamber of secrets."

Rose exchanged a glance with Scorpius, feeling a strange excitement building. The idea of exploring parts of Hogwarts that even James' father hadn't seen was too tempting to resist.

They were interrupted by a clanging of plates as students began filing out of the Great Hall, heading to their morning classes. Rose gathered her things, but as she stood, she noticed James watching her with a curious expression.

"Be careful," he said softly, his tone serious. "Hogwarts is full of secrets. Some are best left alone."

The warning stayed with her all through their Charms lesson. Rose felt both cautious and exhilarated, the idea of Hogwarts' mysteries feeling more real than ever. When classes finally let out, she and Scorpius found themselves drawn back to the dim corridors of the dungeons, their footsteps echoing in the empty space.

They stopped outside the mysterious door from the previous night, staring at it in silence. Rose felt a sense of anticipation building, as though whatever lay beyond was calling to her.

Scorpius glanced at her, his eyes filled with both excitement and a hint of worry. "Are you sure we should go back?"

Rose hesitated, the memory of James' warning flickering in her mind. But the pull was too strong. She nodded. "Just one more look."

They slipped inside, the door creaking as it opened. The room was just as they'd left it, silent and dim, the faint smell of old parchment lingering in the air. Rose felt herself drawn to the pedestal once more, the strange symbols catching the low light and casting flickering shadows on the walls.

But this time, something was different.

As she approached, the air grew heavy, thick with a sense of ancient power. She could almost feel the weight of centuries pressing down on her, as if she were standing in the presence of something far older than the castle itself. The symbols on the pedestal began to glow faintly, their lines shimmering with an eerie green light.

Scorpius stepped back, his eyes wide. "Rose…do you see that?"

She nodded, her heart pounding. She reached out slowly, her fingers hovering just above the symbols. A soft, whispering voice seemed to fill her mind, like a distant echo calling her name. She drew a sharp breath, fighting the urge to step back.

But as she touched the pedestal, a sudden warmth surged through her hand, pulsing like a heartbeat. Images flashed in her mind—dark corridors, ancient symbols, and the faint impression of a serpent coiled in the shadows. She felt a surge of energy, powerful and thrilling, yet strangely familiar, as if a part of her had always known this feeling.

The whispers grew louder, filling her mind with strange, unintelligible words. She pulled her hand back, gasping, and the glow faded, leaving the room in silence.

Scorpius stared at her, his face pale. "Rose…are you alright?"

She nodded shakily, though her heart was racing. "I think…I think it was calling to me."

They left the room in silence, the weight of what they'd seen pressing down on them. As they made their way back to the common room, Rose felt a strange sense of destiny settling over her. She didn't know what lay ahead, but she knew one thing for certain: the secrets of Hogwarts were far from finished with her.
