"How is Samuel doing this morning?" Rowena asked as she showed back up at the room.
"He's had several seizures through the night, he's critical, but the life support that we placed him on has kept him going," Gabriel explained.
"Has Samuel told us what spell he cast yet?" Rowena asked.
"Not yet, but I'm back at full strength now so I'll get it from him," Lucifer chimed in.
"The sooner the better, I did more research last night and have a few counter spells we can try today, but until I know what spell he cast, we're shooting in the dark," Rowena stated as she avoided looking at Lucifer. If she didn't have this connection with Samuel, she wouldn't be working with Lucifer. She still hated him, probably always would, but this wasn't about her, it was about saving Samuel from himself.
Cas appeared back in the room after visiting with Sam for several hours.
"Did Sam say anything to you that I might be able to use," Lucifer asked.
"He's being vague, but I got the impression that he tried to kill himself to save you somehow," Cas stated.
"What? Save me from what?"
"I'm not sure. He said that there was another option at avoiding the apocalypse, but that option would end in his death anyhow and he said that at least this way, they would survive. He wouldn't tell me anymore than that, but I believe that you are who he was referencing," Cas explained.
"I told him about all of his options like we discussed the other day," Gabriel stated as he looked at Lucifer.
"What options?" Dean asked as he entered the room.
"I'm going to go see Sam," Lucifer stated, avoiding answering Dean's question.
"Wait…Sam wrote you this letter. Perhaps if you discussed it with him then you could convince him to give a damn about his life," Dean said as he handed Lucifer the letter.
"Thank you," Lucifer stated and then he was gone.
XOXOXO
"Good morning Sam," Lucifer stated as he appeared in the room.
"How long are we going to keep doing this?" Sam asked.
"As long as it takes for you to tell us what spell you cast when you attempted to kill yourself," Lucifer stated.
"I'm not telling, so you may as well give up," Sam stated defiantly.
"I'll never give up on you," Lucifer stated just as adamantly. "Cas seems to think that your suicide attempt was done to save me and I think that he may be right," Lucifer stated.
"Why would I want to save you, especially after you killed my Mom and Jessica?"
"I don't know, perhaps the reason is in this letter that I got from Dean. Should we read it and find out?"
"Don't…just let me go," Sam pleaded.
"Never," Lucifer whispered as he opened up the envelope.
"Luci, I know that you said that if I killed myself to avoid the apocalypse, then you would just bring me back. Please don't, I'm tired of fighting so damn hard to make my life mean something good when we both know that I'm cursed. Jessica and my Mother have already suffered for my sin of being born, I can't let anyone else get hurt because of me and that includes you," Lucifer read.
"Luci, I want to be left alone. Please just put me back in my own head so that I can rest," Sam pleaded as tears came to his eyes.
"I want you to understand why I have to die. I thought long and hard before making this decision and despite the pain it brings you now, I believe in time you will see that my death was the only option that was best for everyone," Lucifer continued to read, ignoring Sam's objection. "An Angel told me about the keys to the cage. He told me that I could say yes to you and jump back into the hole to send you back to the cage and save the world. That's not an option for me. I know how much you hated it there and I love you too much to ever send you back, but I also can't say yes to you and sit by and watch you burn the world to ashes. My pull to you is too strong for me to continue to resist, so the only way to stop you from creating massive destruction is to take away your perfect vessel. I'm sorry…" Lucifer finished reading the letter.
"I'm sorry, but it's best this way," Sam stated as he wiped the tears from his face.
"Do you still love me Sammy?" Lucifer asked.
"Yes," Sam whispered.
"If you loved me then you would let me save you," Lucifer stated.
"If I let you save me then I would need to force you back into your cage. I can't do that to you," Sam stated.
"Why do you think that I got sent to the cage all that millennia ago?" Lucifer asked.
"I don't know. I suppose God was angry with you for tempting Eve to take a bite out of the apple in the Garden of Eden," Sam answered.
"No, it had nothing to do with that. It had to do with you," Lucifer revealed.
"What?" Sam asked.
"Cas told you about the story of the apocalypse that my father wrote, correct?"
"Yes, he said that he didn't know who won because the last page had been torn out," Sam explained.
"It was the last couple of pages, but I can tell you the whole story as I'm one of two who knows how the story originally ended," Lucifer stated.
"You tore out the pieces? Why? Did you lose?" Sam asked.
"Yes, but not in the way that you think. In the original story of the Apocalypse, Angels didn't need permission to possess people, however we still had our perfect vessels that were fated to be ours. You were still my perfect Vessel, Dean was still Michael's."
"Of course we were, so what happened next?" Sam asked.
"I possessed you without your permission or consent, Michael did the same to Dean and we fought. I killed Michael which effectively means that you killed Dean. I hated killing my brother, I was a wreck, but you were devastated. You stayed with me while we burned the world to ashes and afterwards, I left you. I tried to tell you that Dean's death wasn't your fault, that it had to happen. I told you that I would give you space to grieve and then we could create a new world that we could rule together. You asked me to kill you, but I couldn't because I loved you. I thought that in time you could get over Dean's death and we could find happiness, but I was wrong."
"Is that how the story ended?" Sam asked.
"Not quite. You blamed yourself for Dean's death despite what I told you. You didn't want to live in a world without Dean, so…"
"I killed myself," Sam whispered.
"Yes, but you made a deal with Death, you made him promise you that nothing and no one would be able to bring you back. When I found your lifeless body, I was devastated. I tried to bring you back, I offered to give Death anything, but he wouldn't break his promise to you. I couldn't live in a world without you so I killed myself. That's how the story ended. When I read that, I knew that our story couldn't end that way, so I tore out the pages and I burned them. My father walked in afterwards and he was furious that I had destroyed one of his creations from becoming a reality."
"Couldn't he just rewrite it?" Sam asked.
"No, holy fire destroys creations forever. He could write something similar, but it would never be that story. We fought, I did my best to convince him that the story would be better if humans had to give consent to let us in, he must have listened as that's how it is this time around. Anyways, that's when he constructed the Cage and ordered Michael to throw me down to Hell. I don't regret it Sammy and if I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing. I wanted you to have a choice, I still need you to have choices, it's why I asked Gabriel to tell you about the keys to the cage, it's why he told you how to jump inside," Lucifer explained.
"You were behind that?" Sam asked.
"I was,"
"Do you want to go back there?" Sam asked.
"Of course not, the cage is my own personal hell."
"Then why?"
"Because I would rather spend eternity in the cage then lose you. I won't take away your choices Sammy and if you need to throw me, throw us back in the cage to save your world, then I'll understand and I'll forgive you."
"You would rather us go back there together then to let me die here and now?" Sam asked.
"I would," Lucifer answered.
"The spell I used is under the floor board in Bobby's panic room," Sam stated.
"Thank you Sam," Lucifer said and then he was gone.
