Safe and Sound
Reunion with Bombur and his family.
Inspired by brompt from MAPMonstersArePerceptions.
This is 3 of 3 of the reunions.
Please note – in now where it states what the name of Bombur's wife is, nor his children – or how many were sons and how many were daughters for that matter. Thus, I winged it. There is not a whole lot of female representation in the hobbit, so I couldn't help but picture him as a girl dad.
To kinda get a name theme going, all the girls names start with a 'B' and end with an 'A' like their mother, and the boys names start with a 'B' and ends with an 'UR' like their father.
In the bottom notes you will see the ages of the children – this is how I picture the kids being aged.
The grand halls of Erebor were alive with the sounds of life once again, but today there was an extra excitement in the air. Bombur paced nervously near the entrance, his fingers fidgeting with his belt. His heart raced as he waited; his round cheeks flushed with anticipation.
After months of travel, rebuilding and restoring the mountain, this day had finally come – his family was on their way to Erebor, his beloved Birna and their fourteen children. The thought of seeing them again, of holding them all in his arms, made his heart feel as though it might burst.
Up until they – the company – left Ered Luin, he had never been apart from his family.
Beside him, Bofur nudged him playfully, "I haven't seen you this worked up since the night you almost missed second dinner!"
Bombur chuckled, though the anxious energy remained, "aye, well, this is far more important than dinner. It's been too long, Bofur. Too long since I've seen them all. I just want to know they're safe."
"Safe and sound, cousin," Bifur grunted from his other side, nodding toward the gates.
And there they were. A long line of dwarves was making its way toward the entrance, and at the front of it, Bombur spotted the familiar face of Birna, her long auburn hair flowing down her back, and her eyes twinkling with a mixture of joy and relief. She waved, and Bombur's heart leaped.
He started forward at once, practically running across the stone floor, his feet light despite his size. Birna laughed when she saw him rushing toward her, and as soon as they met, Bombur swept her up in a bear-like embrace, spinning her in the air.
"Birna!" he exclaimed, his voice thick with emotion, "my darling! You're here, you're really here."
She laughed, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, "I told you we'd make it, didn't I? You've kept us waiting long enough, you know!"
Bombur set her down, cupping her face with his large hands, "never again, my love. Never again will we be apart this long."
As they embraced, the familiar sound of a stampede of little feet echoed through the hall. Bombur turned just in time to see a swarm of children racing toward him. His heart nearly stopped with joy as they surrounded him – Branda, the eldest, with her strong, calm demeanour, was the first to wrap her arms around him, followed closely by Borlina, Bralda, and Brunur.
"Dad!" Brunur shouted, his deep voice cracking with emotion, "you're here! We're here! Erebor is amazing!"
"I knew you'd say that, lad," Bombur said, his voice trembling, "it's even better now that you're all here."
The younger children were soon upon him, tugging at his sleeves, vying for his attention. Bimila, Bivora, and little Bragur darted around his legs, giggling and talking all at once, while Bolvur and Balvna stood proudly to the side, though their matching grins betrayed their excitement.
"Look at you all," Bombur said, his voice thick with pride as he knelt down to be closer to them, "you've all grown so much."
"Dad, we've missed you!" Bimila chimed, her arms wrapping around his neck.
Bathila, the second youngest of the girls, clung to his side, her face buried in his shoulder. "I knew you'd bring us here," she whispered, "I knew."
"And I hope you never doubted my promise for a moment, my sweet," Bombur whispered back, pressing a kiss to her hair.
From behind the group, Badora and Bainur toddled up last, the two youngest children. Bragur, now a sturdy lad, waved shyly before running into his father's open arms, while Bainur, barely more than a dwarfling, toddled over with outstretched arms, his wide-eyed wonder lighting up his chubby face.
"Bainur, my littlest lad!" Bombur scooped him up, bouncing him gently, "look at you, growing fast, aren't you?"
Badora, forever a mama's girl, reached up to her mother before stretching out to grasp at one of her father's braids.
Bainur gurgled happily, his small hands patting his father's beard, "Dada!"
Birna came to stand beside him again, her hand resting on his shoulder, "we're all here now, Bombur. Safe and sound, just as we always hoped."
Bombur's eyes misted over as he looked at his wife and children – all fourteen of them. All the months of separation, the worry and uncertainty, seemed to melt away in this one moment and he wasn't afraid to admit it – he cried, "I can't believe it. My whole world, all in one place."
Branda smiled softly, standing tall beside her father. "We've all been looking forward to this, Adad. It's been hard, but we're proud of you. Of everything you've done."
Bombur's heart swelled with emotion, and he pulled Branda and Borlina close, his arms wide enough to include as many of his children as possible. "I've missed you all more than you know," he said, his voice thick, "but I promise you, this mountain is ours again. And now, with all of you here, it's truly home."
As the family reunited, the rest of the company watched with smiles and laughter. Bofur gave a loud cheer, slapping Bombur on the back, "looks like you've brought the whole kingdom over to you, Bombur!"
Bombur chuckled, wiping at his eyes, "aye, and I wouldn't have it any other way."
The laughter of his children filled the air, and for the first time in months, Bombur felt completely at peace. They were here, together, and the mountain was theirs once more. He looked down at Birna, his hand finding hers and squeezing it gently.
"Welcome home, my sweetheart," Bombur whispered.
Birna smiled, her heart full to bursting. "Yes," she said softly, "we are finally home."
