chapter 13: roses and boars and class, oh my!

beep* *beep* *beep* *Crash!*

Blearily, I looked around the room and saw my now destroyed alarm clock. "Greaaat... gonna have to replace that one now..." I said groggily. I then got out of my bed and stretched with a soft whine. I then looked over at my teammates and saw that only Blake was awake with me. She then nodded softly to me and got up from reading. I then went and got dressed, opting not to use the school's coat, instead using my own. The familiar weight on my shoulders was a nice comfort.

"Weiss, you need to wake up... don't make me stop time and shake you," I said to my partner, who jolted up with a gasp and a dirty look at my little joke. "Not funny, Ruby," she whined. I just giggled and looked over at Blake, trying and failing to get Yang up. I then walked up to the loudly snoring sister of mine and... flipped her bed with her in it. Both Blake and Weiss watched with wide eyes as their teammate was flung from her bed and onto the floor. "Huh! Who, what!" she said, looking around confused. "Nice to see you awake, sis. Maybe stay on the bed next time?" I jokingly asked, a soft snicker escaping my lips.

Having gotten all of my team up and dressed, we talked for a moment, just enjoying the company our team provided... until Weiss let out a nervous gasp. "It's seven fifty-eight!" she exclaimed. As if sensing our confusion, she then said, "Class starts at eight!" She darted out of the room faster than even I could see. I snapped my fingers, stopping time and holding both Blake and Yang, then casually walked in the direction of class, passing a mid-dash Weiss. After getting Blake and Yang to class, I went back and picked up Weiss, carrying her into her seat next to me. I then took my own and snapped my fingers.

Weiss still wasn't used to the effects of quicksilver. She looked green around the gills for a moment before controlling herself. Blake, however, wasn't as lucky. Managing to barely avoid throwing up, she held her stomach in confusion, the extreme motion sickness getting to her. With a look at me, her eyes were filled with twitching discomfort. Yang, surprisingly, didn't even look affected. She just looked lost before shaking it away and looking forward to the portly-looking teacher at his desk. Then the bell rang out, indicating we'd made it on time... if only just.

I heard the professor speak and started to tune him out, not particularly caring for the subject as there was but one Grimm that could give me trouble. "... And now I'll call down two volunteers, any takers?" he asked. Weiss raised her hand, wanting to do something; she was also bored out of her mind. "Miss Schnee, alright, come down and take a crack at the wild beast, won't you?" he said, chuckling heartily. "And our next volunteer should be... You in the red coat... Miss Rose?" he clarified, to which I nodded.

Weiss then walked down and grabbed her weapon from her locker in the other room before standing in front of the professor. He nodded to her and opened the cage as a boarbatusk sprinted out to her, looking to gut a human with its tusks. "I hope you're as crafty as the report on you was, my dear, because these are-" he was cut off as Weiss barely moved, her sword hand grabbing the hilt of her blade and moving in a blur, slicing the creature once, removing its head from its body. The whole action was over before he could finish talking, the creature dead and blowing away like dust in the wind.

He stood shocked for a moment before shakily rubbing his eyes. "W-well, let's uh move onto your leader, m-miss Rose if you would?" he asked, prepping the next cage. I went down and grabbed just Ivory, not needing anything else for this. As I stood relaxed and uncaring, bored out of my mind, he looked at me, worried I'd underestimate the creature. "N-now just because Miss Schnee could do it so quickly doesn't mean it's a cake walk, Miss Rose," he said.

As the cage opened, a single shot rang out in the room, and a dying squeal screamed out immediately after, the creature's body disintegrating from the contact. "You were saying, sir?" I asked. He just looked shocked before shaking it off and stuttering, "Y-you may take your seat, Miss Rose."

For a little while, as I walked back over to Weiss, the entire room was talking about us and the level of skill it took to make that look effortless... which wasn't exactly true, but I didn't stop them. Soon, the bell rang, and we were told to move to our next class... combat training, with the goodwitch... oh man, she was gonna love having me there.

Once we'd all sat down in the combat arena's seating, Glynda walked out in her usual attire, making an angry look in my direction before coughing. "Students, if I could have your attention, this class is dedicated to either ranking your combat skills or flushing out your weaknesses. Both are vital for your success and survival. Now, today, you're going to do some one-on-one fights, starting with..." she said. The way she looked at me made me think I was the student she was going to throw in the ring first.

As it turns out, another quick trip to my locker to grab my sword and guns proved me right. "Now, let's see, anyone wanna volunteer?" she asked as I stood relaxed in the middle of the arena. A large, cocky man in armor raised his hand, thinking that I wouldn't actually be that tough. I would be offended, but I know how I look. He got his gear and then ran to the other side. "Fighters ready... Go!" said Glynda as the boy ran at me, mace drawn.

One second, barely enough time to blink, and I dispatched him with one hand, a solid palm thrust to his chest, denting his shiny armor. I wonder what he was thinking as he was sent flying across the room, slamming into the wall, his aura broken immediately. "... Anyone else?" Goodwitch asked, moving the unconscious boy to the stand with her wand. Just as I sighed, thinking of how boring this would be, I saw another hand rise...
