Niki had to physically drag her away as Alice jumped up on whatever Umbrella did to her then persided to throw herself off of the bridge landing in front of that... that... that monster. Its freakish roar rumbled through the night as Niki and one of the other Umbrella guys hauled her away from the battle taking place.
A disarray of bullets and explosions pierced the air. Each one making her flinch knowing it is Alice who is facing that thing all alone.
The further they get away from the overpass and as the sound of the fight seemingly moves in the opposite direction Niki begins to loosen his hold on her so she can break free of his arm spinning around to face him.
The slap that follows doesn't faze him. He takes her rage with apologetic eyes. No words were exchanged between them. There was no need for that. They both could clearly see what the other was feeling.
For Jill the betrayal and hurt of him taking her away while Alice could be getting killed coming out in a masked wave of fury as she pants heavily fighting the desire to chase after Alice. While Niki is staring at her with a protective sadness. The silent promise to Alice to watch out for her even if it means doing something neither of them likes.
Out of all the members of Alice's commandos team, Niki was the one she got along best with. JD was too much of an arrogant asshole for her tastes and he and Rain were a set package. One was far too serious, but she liked the guy as he did hold Alice in high esteem. Ryan and Joe were alright guys but they also seemed to stick together.
The same with Chad Kaplan. He was a newbie and was picked on a lot by JD and Rain, but he stayed close to One. Jill could see how One was mentoring the kid which did make the man seem a bit more human rather than the robotic she was beginning to believe he was.
She didn't like Megan. Nor did Megan like her. Which is understandable given that Megan and Alice used to be together before she came into the picture. But Niki was Alice's best friend on the team. They used to always joke that a Russian and Ukrainian could never be friends which is why it's the American and Italian parts of Alice that have corrupted her enough to hang around with him.
The two would often speak to each other in their native tongues. Taking turns on which language to speak between them. It was their thing. A reminder of home and who they are.
Rationally Jill knows that if it was any other circumstances then Niki never would have left Alice to face that thing alone. And that is the only thing stopping her from screaming at him and hitting him again.
But oh god does she want to hit him again. Nearly as much as she wants to kill those Umbrella bastards who fucked around with Alice. Because what happened back on that bridge was not normal. Since coming back Alice hasn't been normal. But this... this was a whole new level of abnormal.
It was like Alice wasn't even there. She's joked about One being a robot but that was more like Alice on that bridge. Alice seemingly has no control over her own body. She was fighting herself to even look at her. And even then, it took Jill taking hold of her to be able to break the spell that the Umbrella creation had on Alice.
"The Nemesis Project is officially active." The monotone almost robotic way Alice said that was worrying enough. The fact she said that doesn't make any sense. Those two combined would be enough to make her seriously question what the fuck was going on. Yet it was the third thing that happened that truly makes her terrified for Alice.
As Alice was saying whatever that meant her eyes flickered. Not the usual way the greenness would shine and dull depending on her mood. The way you would expect someone's eyes to flicker in shading in lights or something like that.
No this... this was something else. As Alice was talking, fighting the urge to stare back down at that beast. Her eyes turned white. Her iris turned white with the signature red shades that make up the Umbrella logo. Somehow Alice's eyes turned into the Umbrella logo before changing back to the blue that has freakishly replaced the green that Jill was enamoured with.
What has Umbrella done to you, Alice?
Another explosion shatters the silence around them as all heads flick in that direction. "What do we do now," Carlos asks shifting awkwardly in place as he tries to keep Yuri from collapsing to the ground. A losing battle from the looks of it.
"Now," Jill grits out fighting back the urge to run towards the sounds of destruction. "We find this damn kid and get the fuck out of this city." The faster she can get Alice away from Umbrella the better.
Niki nods in agreement with her. "Alice can handle herself." He says more for her then the others. "But we need to hurry up and find this child before something else does."
Taking a step back Jill notices the abandoned pickup truck. One that isn't rammed into another vehicle or a burning wreck as they have encountered a few times already. A city descended into chaos, death and destruction would not be complete without a few flaming wrecks here and there.
"I'll hotwire the truck. We can move through the city easier." Not bothering to wait for a reply she storms over to the car and is relieved that the people who left this behind forgot to lock it.
Climbing into the driver's seat she makes quick work in pulling out the wiring and finding the correct wires to push together. A trick she learned from her days before the force. One that impressed Alice immensely but would not go over well with her bosses if they discovered her little talent for grand theft auto.
The engine whirls for a second before cutting off as Jill tries to find the sweet spot that will keep the car running for her. Everyone else leaves her alone. A blessing really as it allows her to try and smother her emotions before the others come looking for her again.
She hates being emotional. For other people to see her desperation and fear of losing Alice. It's the one thing she can't abide as everyone looks at her with pity or unwanted sympathy. She doesn't want that from them.
She just wants Alice.
A scornful laugh escapes her. God, she sounds just like those stupid lovesick people you see in films. The ones that you make fun of for being so overly dramatic about their feelings. Yet everyone seems to adore watching and dreaming of having a similar romance. If the version of her before Alice could see her now, she would be annoyed and disappointed.
But fuck that version of her. She never had Alice. Never had their love and bond. Never had it so Alice was intertwined in her life that being apart from her like this feels like losing a limb. The constant distance between them making it difficult to breathe at times.
Yeah... no that sounded worse.
With one last effort the truck roars to life and remains alive. Finally, something good happens.
"YURI." She hears the soldier people shout out followed by five different gunshots and Terri screaming.
Throwing open the door Jill jumps out to see the very sickly looking man dead on the floor with two different bullet wounds in his head and three more to his body and neck. Eyes glossing over the hushed crowd Peyton is leaning against the truck staring in disbelief at the sight of Yuri's bleeding corpse.
Terri is holding her camera in one hand while her other hand is enclosed over her mouth as her chest heaves rapidly. Her eyes widen in shock and fright frozen to the spot.
Niki gritting his teeth and glaring at the ground cursing the world mentally as the other three soldiers looked at the last member of their team as a fresh wound dribbled blood down his arm. Niki looks at her. "Yuri turned. He bit Carlos." Niki says professionally but with a bit of an edge to his voice.
Not knowing what else to say to this development she just flicks her head towards the truck. "Trucks ready for us to head out."
Terri looks at the cabin of the truck. There isn't space enough inside for everyone and from what she just saw she really doesn't feel like being trapped in a confined space with two people who could turn at any minute. "I'm not riding with them," Terri outragely states indicating to Peyton and Carlos in large wafting gestures. Her scream making her almost snap at the woman. Those things can track by sound. Screaming will draw more of them towards them.
Before she could tell Terri where to shove it Niki jumped in. "Peyton and Carlos can ride bed with me and Jess."
Jessical scowls at Niki upon hearing this but doesn't argue instead adjusting her pistol grip as she hops into the back. The others climbed in behind her. Terri claims the seat up front with her. Yey. With Sam and Jack taking the seats behind them.
As Jill starts to drive away and head towards the school, she dreads to think what the chances were to have found a working vehicle that could fit all of them in. It was good fortune. Very unlikely and highly improbable good luck but she won't look a gifted horse on the mouth.
The ride is silent as no one really knows what to say after losing three members of their group in such rapid succession. A silence she is more than happy to live in.
Alice is gone. Off fighting that monster and may or may not still be alive. While also dealing with the after effects of whatever those Umbrella assholes did to her. Peyton is bitten and will probably be dead before morning. In fact, all of them will probably be dead by the morning. If the dead don't kill them the nuke will.
If they don't find this kid, they are screwed. There is no other way out of the city. Umbrella made sure of that. And even then, they don't know for sure that this kid is even real. Umbrella is made up of sadistic bastards and she wouldn't put it past them to have done all this for their own entertainment.
That they are currently watching them on the camera laughing at them as they rush off on a wild goose chase.
All she wants to do now is get herself and Alice out of this god forsaken city. If she was being brutally honest with herself and what better time than now as she drove a hot-wired truck through the dead streets of the city alongside a frightened weathergirl and with a friend teetering on the edge of death all she wants is to get out of this city. And she has done for a while now.
Longer than she is willing to admit.
All she ever cared about was becoming an RCPD cop. It was her goal and greatest ambition. The biggest thrill of her life had been when she graduated from the academy top of her class. A feeling matched only by the tremendous honour of being tapped for S.T.A.R.S. and the startling realisation of her feelings for Alice and their relationship.
But now the city had gone crazy and was dying. No... scratch that it's dead. Raccoon City is dead, and she doubts it will ever be able to come back. She has spent her entire life here making something of herself. Creating her own home and place in the world. And now because of Umbrella that is all gone.
Alice had always grown up moving around. Never staying in one place for longer then six or seven months. Her father (not that he deserves that title) was constantly moving from one Umbrella base to the next making sure their security was up to the standards he expected and then leaving once the job was done dragging Alice with him.
Her girlfriend admitted sometimes she hated living like that. That any time she felt settled somewhere and started making friends she then had to unroot her entire life and start all over. However, she did love seeing all these new places. Travelling the world and exploring different cultures opened her eyes to just how vast the earth really was.
The two of them had gone on a few trips together. Italy was their main destination together as Alice visited family over there. Ukraine a few times but Alice mostly went there on her own. Alice also moved around a lot for her own work. Travelling to different countries for missions and meetings.
But Alice always came back to Raccoon City because it's where she was.
At the odd times, she had wondered what it would be like to move somewhere else. As Alice's job started to get to her Jill had wondered if maybe it would be best if the two of them just left the city behind. Alice is wealthy enough to fund them for maybe three generations without having to work. Maybe they could start over together away from Umbrella and Alice's father and build a life for themselves.
An idea she never voiced to Alice because she knows she couldn't bring herself to actually leave Raccoon City or her job. But then Alice disappeared, and she was suspended from S.T.A.R.S. because of Umbrella and everything she held on to so tightly that made her life worthwhile was gone. Umbrella had taken that away from her.
While Alice was gone, she had thought about leaving the city again. Try and rebuild her damaged career somewhere else. But she couldn't leave while Alice's fate was still up in the air. In hindsight, if she knew what was going to happen leaving would have been what's best. She could have avoided all of this.
Yet she still thinks she would have stayed. Not to help the people. There is very little in can do in terms of offering aid in times like this. Unless you count killing the Walking Dead. No, she would have stayed because this is where Alice is.
Somewhere along the way, Jill's home had stopped being this city but rather the woman who holds her heart.
"I'm sorry," Terri mumbles loud enough for them to hear as Jack and Sam quietly begin to bicker with each other in the back. Seems that sorrowful silence didn't last very long.
Jill groans internally not wanting to have small talk with Terri. Especially given how she started and has a feeling she won't like what Terri is about to say. "About what." She responds a bit harsher than she meant to.
"About Alice." Terri continues ignoring the way Jill suddenly tenses at the reminder of Alice. "She was brave for distracting that thing for us to escape."
Was... Alice was brave. No Alice is still alive. Alice is alive and well and the next time Jill sees her she is going to kill her for pulling this shit on her.
"She'll be fine." Jill decrees in a voice that stops Terri from saying anything else on the matter. The former weather woman bites the inside of her cheek forcibly stopping herself from saying anything else under Jill's directed glare. "She'll be fine," Jill repeats again.
A familiar motto running through her head of late.
When she focused back on the road, well less of the road and more like a strange obstacle course ahead of her. Jill notices movement out of the corner of her eye darting forward and barely manages to react quickly enough to slam on the brakes bringing the truck to a sudden stop and throwing everyone forward.
Less then three feet in front of the car is a man jumping up and down in the middle of the road. Something about him seems weirdly familiar to her. The man frantically runs over to her window which she does roll down for him. "Hey, it's you." He waves at her with his right hand shaking it around.
Then she remembered him. He was the perp who'd almost been bitten by the infected hooker in the squad room. The one who she saved by killing said hooker and then shooting the cuff off of him and telling him to get out of the city.
Seems neither of them were able to manage that after all.
The man looks down at her spotting the muzzle of her gun pointing towards him. Holding up his hands the perp cried, "It's cool, officer, it's cool!" He begins talking a mile a minute just as he did back in the squad room which is what first caught her attention. "I ain't one of those things! Ain't even bit."
To prove his point, he did a full three-sixty. His clothes were a bit scuffed and ugly as hell, but he was definitely not seriously injured or showing any indication that he was bitten. From here she can make out the two guns he has pressed into his waistband. At least he won't be deadweight. Unlike someone here.
Feeling everyone's gaze on her she indicates the door to the back side door with her head. "Climb in," she said knowing despite everything going on she couldn't just leave this man to die. At least not without a good reason.
"Damn," He throws open the side door and hops aboard squeezing in next to Jack. "I thought I was the last man alive, but when I heard the shooting, I came running." Offering his hand to Jack, Sam and Terri, he introduces himself. "Lloyd Jefferson Wayne. You can call me L.J. on the account of the informal situation."
Jill will admit to sniggering at L. J's description of the situation. Informal is quite a colossal understatement of where they find themselves.
As soon as the door closes Jill puts the car back into drive and continues onwards trying to find the fastest and safest route to the school.
"Terri Morales." Terri shakes L. J's hand after Sam and Jack introduce themselves to him. Terri looks towards her for a second before introducing her to the newcomer. "That's Jill Valentine." She meets the man's friendly gaze in the mirror not saying anything but acknowledging him.
L.J. nearly jumped out of his seat at meeting Terri. "Shit, I know you! I know you!" He repeats turning to Jack and Sam expecting to see the same enthusiasm as then but is instead met with blank looks. "You do the weather. You're a goddamn celebrity."
"That's me," Terri said brightening for the first time since Raven's Gate.
In her own humble opinion, she wouldn't class Terri as a celebrity. Alice is more of a celebrity then Terri given Alice has shown up in the papers on more then two occasions, unlike Terri. But if the idea of being famous stops Terri from freaking out on them then she will allow it.
For now.
If Terri starts to grow an over inflated ego like she did when they first met Jill will be very tempted to accidentally drive off without her.
Jill grounds her teeth in frustration as the two of them begin conversing with each other. Or more like L.J. gushing over Terri and her eating it all up. Peyton is dying, the city is about to get blown to hell, Alice is off playing footsie with the Frankenstein monster and here she is stuck with a starstruck small-time punk and Raccoon 7 weather chick.
She would rather face the modern day Frankenstein with Alice then have to listen to this dribble. Shooting herself in the head in the head seemed to be looking more and more palatable than having to listen to these two.
A feeling that she seems to share with Sam and Jack as they side eye each other.
It's not much further she tells her turning onto Hudson Avenue. Not much further then she can escape this new form of torture. Find the kid, find Alice, get out of here and then bring down Umbrella. A simple plan really.
She hopes Alice is having better luck then her.
Everything hurts and everything sucks.
Alice summarises after managing to somehow break free of the urge to fight that thing and slipping away from it after it tried to fire a rocket down the garbage shoot only for it to catch on the same metal snag as her arm did forcing it to explode halfway down the shoot instead of directly behind her.
Why she felt the overwhelming desire to fight that grey skinned freak she doesn't know. Other then cursing Umbrella for the hundredth time in as many hours she has been awake.
Manoeuvring through the desolate streets of Raccoon City she makes an effort to stay out of the sight of the camera watching them. She doesn't know how that thing found them, but she has no doubt it had something to do with Umbrella and she would rather avoid any more confrontations with the thing that batted her away like an insignificant fly.
Only when the constant tingles on the back of her neck fade does she feel safe enough to collapse against a wall trying to catch her breath. Focusing past the adrenaline that is pulsing through her veins her mind slowly begins to clear past the fuzziness of the desire to fight and kill to the saner part of her.
Saving to delve into why she had the unique impulse to fight a monster nearly twice her size later on. She analysed her fight with the said monster. That wasn't just any biohazard. That thing was created by Umbrella for a purpose. The lickers were meant to be a kind of guard dog thing... she thinks it was anyway. There was a plan to domesticate them if she remembers correctly. But this was different.
The Lickers were according to the Red Queen pallets of flesh directly injected with the virus and mutated. Which is why they were different. They aren't just infected people or dogs, but a mesh of different flesh merged together.
Whose bright idea was that plan?
Either way, the lickers were slowly developed and formed. So, this new bioweapon must be the same. But the lickers took months of work while this new one had less the two weeks. She shared a hospital with it.
Their hearts fell into the same beat when facing each other. She doesn't like that. Doesn't like the feeling of comradery with the thing that just tried to kill her and Jill. Doesn't like the associate she has with something like that.
Is that what Umbrella was trying to turn her into? Did they run out of time, and she is just a half form of that thing?
Would the cure work on her? It was designed to fight the virus and overpower it in people or creatures within the first few hours of infection. But whatever she is now is different. Would taking the cure rid her of all these new abilities she has or weaken her enough for the virus to kill her?
Struggling to take a deep breath she glances down at her broken, dirty, bloodied body. The wound on her arms has already stopped bleeding and her ribs pain levels are slowly decreasing as it becomes easier for her to breathe.
When she was thrown into the stone pillar, she felt three of her ribs shatter on impact. Which was probably the wake up call her body needed to realise she wasn't going to win this fight and instead allowed her to flee.
The small cuts from diving through glass and bruises have already disappeared leaving no trace of any injuries in the first place. A handy feature but unnerving to say the least. It seems like her body can heal it relatively quickly. Apart from injuries she had prior to the T-virus being injected into her body.
Hence the scar remaining across her left shoulder. One she remembers getting now. It was an attempted mugging in Washington. The idiot who tried to mug her used a switchblade on her when she fought back. It hurt like hell, but she was still able to disarm him and hand him over to the police.
Jill was enraged when she found out what happened and even more so at how easily she was brushing the instance off. She can't remember why it was so easy to avoid but something about her father rings a bell.
"Before our boss's daughter starts seeing more things." Askegren sneer echoes in the back of her mind. "I knew I recognised you somewhere. Well Princess I don't know about you, but I didn't have daddy put me wherever I wanted. I earned my position. Now we get moving before those things find he-."
Our boss's daughter. Was she really the daughter of somebody important at Umbrella? If that's true and they worked together why does she feel a mixture of sick, fear and rage directed towards this invisible figure? Why would she work with him when she thinks she hates him?
Just another question she will either hopefully remember soon or get Jill to fill her in on.
Speaking of Jill, she needs to find her. Askegren is dead, Peyton and Yuri are infected and although she does somewhat trust Niki to watch out for Jill, she still needs to find her and protect her from the dangers around them. She won't say she will miss or mourn Askegren's passing. he wasn't somebody she cared about but he was a friend of Niki's. And another trained gun working with Jill. Losing him has put the group at more of a risk. With two members going to turn soon having one less gun puts them in a more precarious situation.
In other words, she needs to find them again before they get themselves all killed.
But one of the unfortunate issues with suffering from memory loss is she has no clue where this school they are looking for Angela is at. Nor did any of the streets nearby help guide her.
Forcing herself to her feet she notices the minor pain radiating from her fingers and spots one of her fingers has become dislocated. Snapping back into place on muscle memory she winces at the snapping noise.
The city around her has turned quiet again. The gunfights from before are either too far for her to hear or are no longer going on. Closing her eyes she tries to train her senses on Jill. If she was able to track her down to that church following her new senses, she prays she might be able to do it again.
If not, then she is royally screwed.
It takes a few moments before she picks something up. The pull tugged her in one direction. A pull that could either take her to Jill, the monster, more lickers or some other bioweapon. Taking her chance, she begins to walk in that direction wishing she had a bike again to count down on time.
Checking how much ammo she has just in case she walks herself into another mess she dreads thinking at what else Umbrella might have let lose upon the city. The sooner they get out of here the better.
