Chapter 4: The Trial
{Location: 9th Floor, Nazarick – Throne Room}
{Time: Hours after the Battle of the Lizardmen}
{POV: Cocytus}
The massive double doors to the throne room loomed before Cocytus as he stood in silent contemplation. His multifaceted eyes glinted with the faint glow of the magical torches lining the hall. Beyond those doors lay the Supreme One, Ainz-sama, the master of all Nazarick, and the one to whom Cocytus owed his very existence. Yet, his usually resolute steps felt heavier than ever.
"FAILURE. IS. UNACCEPTABLE," Cocytus rumbled, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the still air, every word laden with the weight of his shame. "EVEN. IF. LESSONS. CAN. BE. LEARNED... THE. DISGRACE. IS. MINE. TO. BEAR."
The memory of the battle replayed in vivid detail, a storm of frustration and regret. The Lizardmen, primitive as they were, had proven far more resilient than Cocytus had anticipated. Their resourcefulness and unity had outmaneuvered his forces at critical moments. The skeletons had fallen victim to the traps laid in the swamp, their hollow bones shattering as they stumbled into pits or were struck down by well-placed slingshots. The zombies, while formidable, had been slowed by the marshy terrain, leaving them vulnerable to the swift and coordinated counterattacks of the Lizardmen.
The Elder Lich, Igva, sent as his trump card, had failed to secure the decisive blow. Cocytus could still see the image of Zaryusu, the white-scaled Lizardman hero, delivering the final strike to Igva, the blade of Frost Pain plunging through the undead commander's skull. It was a humiliating moment, and though victory had eventually been wrested from the Lizardmen's grasp by sheer attrition, it was not the clean, overwhelming triumph Ainz-sama had demanded.
"I. ALLOWED. THEM. TO. RALLY," Cocytus rumbled, his clawed hand tightening around the hilt of his weapon. "THEIR. CHIEF'S. COURAGE. AND. THEIR. PRIESTESS'S. MAGIC. TURNED. WHAT. SHOULD. HAVE. BEEN. A. ROUT. INTO. A. NEAR-DEFEAT. I. SHOULD. HAVE. FORESEEN. IT."
The memory of the surviving Lizardmen's retreat burned in his mind. They had not been utterly crushed, as they should have been. Their spirit remained unbroken, a seed of defiance that could bloom again if left unchecked.
"THIS. IS. MY. FAILURE," Cocytus thought, his mind a maelstrom of regret. "I. DID. NOT. FULLY. COMPREHEND. AINZ-SAMA'S. EXPECTATIONS. I. UNDERESTIMATED. THE. ENEMY. I. HAVE. NO. EXCUSE."
Cocytus pushed open the massive doors to the throne room, his heavy steps echoing against the polished floors. As he stepped inside, he was greeted by the sight of his fellow guardians already assembled, their forms imposing and regal, exuding the power and grace befitting their stations. Each stood at attention, facing the Throne of Kings at the far end of the chamber.
Cocytus joined the line silently, his towering form settling into place beside the other guardians. His multifaceted eyes scanned his companions briefly: Demiurge stood with his usual air of calm superiority, his sharp, calculating gaze fixed on the throne. Albedo, poised and immaculate as ever, radiated an aura of devotion so intense it seemed to burn. Shalltear stood with a serene yet proud expression, though her crimson eyes flickered with curiosity. Aura and Mare were positioned close together, the former radiating confidence while the latter fidgeted nervously under the immense weight of the room's atmosphere.
The Throne of Kings commanded the room, its magnificence a testament to the unassailable authority of its occupant. Crafted from a seamless fusion of black obsidian and glowing veins of red, the throne appeared to pulse with a life of its own, as though the very essence of death emanated from its core. Jagged spires rose from its backrest, forming a crown-like silhouette that framed Ainz-sama perfectly. The armrests curled like skeletal fingers, cradling their master as he sat with an air of absolute dominion.
And perched on one armrest was Kana, her small form radiating an aura far beyond her size. Her golden eyes, so often filled with innocent wonder, now bore a piercing intensity. Anger and disappointment swirled in her gaze, and her expression was one of profound judgment, a look that could only be described as death itself. Cocytus felt a chill run down his spine; her gaze, though silent, was as terrifying as any punishment he could imagine.
"Cocytus," Kana's voice rang out, soft yet laced with ice. "You kept Ainz-sama waiting."
"FORGIVE. MY. TARDINESS," Cocytus intoned, lowering his head. His mandibles trembled as he bowed deeply, his towering form radiating a rare vulnerability in the presence of his master.
Ainz-sama raised a skeletal hand, his crimson eyes sweeping over the assembled guardians. "It is not the time to assign blame," he said, his voice calm yet carrying an undertone of command that filled the room. "I have summoned you all to express my gratitude and to introduce someone who has joined us today."
The guardians exchanged curious glances, their attention shifting as the faint sound of fluttering wings echoed through the chamber. A figure descended from the upper reaches of the throne room, a being of serene and otherworldly beauty. His delicate, childlike form was adorned with golden feathers, radiating a soft luminescence.
"Victim," Ainz intoned, his voice calm and commanding. "Thank you for answering my summons."
The cherubic guardian landed gently before the throne, bowing deeply with an expression of pure devotion. "Ainz-sama, it is my honor to serve," Victim said in a lilting, melodic voice, his tone imbued with reverence.
Ainz inclined his head, his crimson gaze sweeping over the other guardians. "I wish to thank you all once more for your loyalty and dedication. When the guardians came to my aid earlier, I was reassured by the strength of your bond. However, the distress was not mine, it was Kana's, though her situation was ultimately not dire."
Albedo stepped forward, her golden eyes gleaming with fervor. "Ainz-sama, to protect you is our highest duty. Even if the threat were a mere shadow or an echo of danger, we would respond without hesitation. Your safety is paramount."
Demiurge nodded, his sharp features reflecting unwavering confidence. "Indeed, Ainz-sama. There is no need to thank us for what is simply our purpose. To do any less would be blasphemy against your divine will."
Shalltear clasped her hands to her chest, her crimson eyes shining with determination. "Ainz-sama, our lives and every action are dedicated solely to your glory. Praise is unnecessary, we exist only to fulfill your commands."
Victim, who had remained kneeling, added in his gentle voice, "The guardians' loyalty is absolute, Ainz-sama. Our unity is the foundation of Nazarick's strength."
Ainz surveyed them all, his gaze lingering on each of his guardians. "Your devotion humbles me, and I do not take it for granted. You have all demonstrated an unshakable commitment to Nazarick, and for that, I am deeply grateful."
The guardians bowed as one, their voices resonating in unison. "Your gratitude is unnecessary, Ainz-sama. It is our privilege to serve."
Victim looked up, his serene expression imbued with tranquility. "If I may, Ainz-sama, your presence brings harmony to Nazarick. This unity we share stems from your leadership and vision."
Ainz nodded, his skeletal hand resting lightly on the arm of his throne. "Thank you, Victim. Your insight is appreciated. Now, let us proceed."
Ainz-sama raised a skeletal hand, his crimson eyes sweeping over the assembled guardians. "I have also summoned you all to express my gratitude."
The guardians shifted slightly, their attention solely on Ainz.
Ainz's crimson gaze fell upon each guardian in turn, his tone sincere. "You have all demonstrated unwavering loyalty and dedication. It is because of your efforts that Nazarick remains supreme in this world. I am grateful for each of you."
Albedo stepped forward slightly, her expression glowing with pride. "Ainz-sama, your words honor us, but there is no need for gratitude. Serving you is our purpose, and we exist only to carry out your will."
Demiurge nodded in agreement. "Indeed, Ainz-sama. Your praise humbles us, but it is unnecessary. Everything we do is for you."
Cocytus stood silently, his multifaceted eyes shifting nervously as Ainz's gaze turned toward Shalltear. The vampire immediately fell to her knees, bowing so deeply that her forehead nearly touched the floor. Her silver hair pooled around her, shimmering like moonlight in the grand throne room.
"Ainz-sama!" Shalltear's voice was raw with emotion, trembling with a mixture of shame and desperation. "I cannot bear the thought of my actions, of my disgrace, staining the honor of Nazarick. Even though I was controlled by a World Item, the fact remains that I raised my weapon against you, the one I swore to serve above all else."
Her hands gripped the hem of her dress tightly as her words poured forth, each one laden with regret. "For this unforgivable transgression, I beg you, Ainz-sama, please punish me! Whatever punishment you deem fit, I will accept it gladly. My failure deserves no mercy."
The guardians stood in tense silence, watching Shalltear's heartfelt plea with expressions ranging from sympathy to quiet respect for her contrition.
Ainz's glowing crimson eyes softened slightly as he gazed down at Shalltear. He stood from his throne, the aura of his overwhelming presence filling the room as he spoke, his tone measured and calm. "Shalltear, your actions were not your own. You were a victim of a World Item's influence, a force against which even the mightiest cannot always prevail. To hold you fully accountable for what transpired would be unjust."
Shalltear shook her head vehemently, tears brimming in her crimson eyes. "No, Ainz-sama! Even if it was not by my own will, the fact remains that I failed you. My failure to resist, my inability to protect Nazarick from such a disgrace, is unforgivable. Please… I beg you… punish me so that I may atone!"
Ainz extended a skeletal hand, signaling for her to rise. "Shalltear, I understand your desire for atonement, and your loyalty is clear. However, the matter of punishment is one I will decide at a later date. For now, your penance will be to serve Nazarick with unwavering devotion and ensure such a failure never occurs again."
Shalltear looked up at him, her tears flowing freely as she clasped her hands before her. "Ainz-sama… thank you for your mercy. I swear upon my existence that I will never falter again. I will dedicate my every moment to proving my loyalty and worth to you."
Ainz nodded, his gaze steady but kind. "Then focus on your service, Shalltear. Let your actions speak for you, and prove your devotion through your deeds. That will be your path to redemption."
Shalltear bowed deeply once more, her voice resolute despite her tears. "Yes, Ainz-sama. I will not fail you again."
As she returned to her place among the guardians, her expression was solemn yet filled with determination. The weight of her regret remained, but her resolve to serve her master and atone for her perceived failure burned brighter than ever. Cocytus watched the exchange, his own sense of unease growing as he awaited his turn under Ainz's unwavering gaze.
Ainz continued addressing the other guardians, his calm and authoritative voice filling the throne room. He commended each of them for their contributions to Nazarick's glory, Demiurge for his flawless plans, Albedo for her exceptional management, and the others for their unyielding loyalty. Each word carried weight, and yet, Cocytus barely heard them.
His mind was a maelstrom.
''WHY. DID. I. FAIL?' Cocytus's thoughts thundered within his mind, each word reverberating like the strike of a war drum. 'WAS. IT. MY. UNDERESTIMATION. OF. THE. LIZARDMEN? DID. I. DISHONOR. AINZ-SAMA. BY. NOT. FORESEEING. THEIR. TACTICS? WHAT. SHOULD. I. HAVE. DONE. DIFFERENTLY?'
The questions tormented him, twisting his pride into something fragile and brittle. The image of the battle replayed in his mind like an endless nightmare, the skeletal forces ensnared in primitive traps, the undead beasts overwhelmed by teamwork, and the Elder Lich, Igva, struck down by a mere mortal wielding Frost Pain. His own orders, delivered with confidence at the time, now felt hollow and shortsighted.
Cocytus gripped the hilt of his weapon tightly, the cool metal grounding him as guilt and regret gnawed at his composure. He had failed to bring absolute victory to Nazarick. No matter the mitigating circumstances, no matter the lessons learned, failure was failure.
Ainz's voice cut through Cocytus's swirling thoughts like a blade.
"Lastly… Cocytus."
The name reverberated in the vast chamber, heavy with finality. All eyes turned toward him, their gazes expectant, inquisitive, or even pitying. Cocytus stiffened as if a freezing gale had swept through his core. His multifaceted eyes met Ainz's crimson gaze, and he felt as though the weight of the entire Tomb bore down upon him.
The throne loomed above him, a masterpiece of dread and majesty. The [Throne of Kings], carved from dark stone and veined with glowing red sigils, exuded an aura of absolute authority. Precious jewels adorned its edges, their gleaming facets seemingly alive with the whispers of the long-dead. Shadows gathered around its base, writhing like sentient mist, accentuating the skeletal figure seated upon it. Ainz Ooal Gown, the Overlord of Nazarick, sat as if the throne had been made solely for him, his crimson eyes glowing with an intensity that pierced the very soul. His skeletal fingers rested lightly on the armrests, radiating a quiet power that demanded reverence.
Perched on the armrest beside him, Kana radiated a terrifying presence that belied her small frame. Her usual innocence and devotion were replaced by a fiery wrath, her golden aura pulsating with an overwhelming intensity. Her sharp, narrowed eyes were fixed on Cocytus, her gaze like the scythe of a reaper, cutting deep into his resolve. The air around her seemed charged, crackling with a pressure that made even the other guardians tense in unease.
Slowly, deliberately, Cocytus stepped forward, every movement deliberate and burdened. When he finally knelt before the throne, his claws brushed the polished floor, trembling slightly as they met the cold stone.
"AINZ-SAMA," Cocytus began, his voice a low, deliberate rumble, each word weighted with solemnity, "I. AM. READY. TO. RECEIVE. YOUR. JUDGMENT."
Ainz leaned forward slightly, his crimson eyes narrowing, their piercing light reflecting off the shadows that surrounded him. The room grew silent, the oppressive weight of his gaze amplifying the tension as though even the walls of Nazarick held their breath.
"Cocytus," Ainz began, his voice deep and measured, "you were given command of Nazarick's forces in the Lizardmen campaign. It was an opportunity to demonstrate the overwhelming power of this great Tomb and the capabilities of its Floor Guardians. And yet…"
The pause hung in the air like a blade poised to strike, sharp and inevitable.
"…you allowed the enemy to exploit your forces' weaknesses. You underestimated their resolve, their terrain, and their resourcefulness. While the battle was ultimately won, it was not the decisive victory I had expected. Tell me, Cocytus, what do you have to say for yourself?"
Cocytus's head sank lower, his mandibles clicking softly in a gesture of deep humility. "AINZ-SAMA, I. ACCEPT. FULL. RESPONSIBILITY. FOR. MY. FAILURE. I. UNDERESTIMATED. THE. ENEMY'S. CAPABILITIES. AND. OVERESTIMATED. MY. OWN. STRATEGY. I. FAILED. TO. FULLY. GRASP. THE. LESSONS. YOU. INTENDED. FOR. ME. TO. LEARN. FOR. THIS. DISGRACE… I. OFFER. NO. EXCUSES. I. AM. PREPARED. TO. ACCEPT. ANY. PUNISHMENT. YOU. SEE. FIT."
Ainz observed him in silence, the oppressive weight of his gaze making the air in the throne room feel thicker with each passing second. Kana's aura flared slightly, her disappointment practically palpable as she tilted her head, her golden eyes narrowing further.
The oppressive silence filled the air, and just as the tension seemed unbearable, Ainz slowly tilted his head, his crimson eyes glinting with a mysterious light. Then, he did something no one in the room anticipated. His skeletal jaw opened wide, and his voice rang out with a booming declaration:
"Outstanding!"
The word echoed across the throne room like the crack of thunder. Every guardian stiffened, their gazes snapping toward their master in utter disbelief. Even Kana, who had been brimming with wrath moments before, faltered. Her golden aura dimmed as she blinked up at Ainz, her expression one of stunned confusion and wonder.
"Outstanding…?" Kana echoed softly, her voice trembling with uncertainty. She studied Ainz's unchanging skeletal visage, trying to grasp the depths of his reasoning. Had she misunderstood him? No, it couldn't be, this was her beloved Ainz-sama! Of course, he had seen beyond what mere mortals or even Guardians could comprehend. Whatever he intended, it was surely profound, beyond what even she had realized.
Ainz leaned back on his throne, his crimson gaze sweeping across the room with quiet authority. "Cocytus, do you truly think this campaign was a failure?"
Cocytus hesitated, his mandibles clicking nervously as if searching for strength. "AINZ-SAMA, THE. LACK. OF. A. DECISIVE. VICTORY… TARNISHES. THE. GLORY. OF. NAZARICK. I… CANNOT. CALL. IT. ANYTHING. BUT. A. FAILURE."
Ainz raised a skeletal finger, halting any further self-flagellation. "You misunderstand. This campaign was never about absolute domination. It was a test, both for the Lizardmen and for you."
The guardians exchanged glances, their astonishment barely concealed. Ainz continued, his tone steady and calm. "The forces you commanded in this battle, Cocytus, were largely made up of [Pop-Up Monsters]. These undead were of minimal cost to Nazarick, expendable tools meant to gather information and assess the enemy's strength. The only significant resource was the Elder Lich you summoned."
He paused, letting his words sink in before delivering the conclusion with a faint chuckle. "In essence, the price we paid was negligible. In return, you gained valuable insight into the enemy's tactics, their resilience, and, most importantly, your own shortcomings. In this exchange, Cocytus… we are getting change back."
Cocytus raised his head slightly, his multifaceted eyes gleaming with a faint, bewildered light. "AINZ-SAMA… YOU. MEAN. TO. SAY…?"
"Yes," Ainz said, his tone now tinged with amusement. "The cost of this campaign was minimal, but the lessons learned are invaluable. A small price to pay for your growth as a commander, would you not agree?"
Kana's expression shifted from confusion to awe as the realization dawned upon her. She looked at Ainz with renewed admiration, her earlier fury replaced by a deep sense of pride and reverence. 'Of course,' she thought, her heart swelling. 'Ainz-sama is always three steps ahead. What I saw as failure was merely another layer of his grand plan. Truly, he is beyond comprehension, a being worthy of my eternal devotion!'
Cocytus lowered his head even further, his mandibles clicking softly as a sign of deep humility. "THANK. YOU. VERY. MUCH. AINZ-SAMA. YOUR. WISDOM. SHALL. NOT. BE. WASTED. THESE. LESSONS. I. WILL. TREASURE. FOR. ETERNITY."
Ainz leaned forward slightly, his crimson eyes locking onto Cocytus. "Be that as it may… you still lost, Cocytus. And for that, you must be punished."
The room grew silent once more, every guardian waiting with bated breath as the weight of Ainz's words sank in.
Ainz's crimson gaze never wavered as he raised a skeletal hand, gesturing toward Cocytus with finality.
"Cocytus," he began, his tone carrying an air of undeniable authority, "you will personally mop up that sludge."
Cocytus's mandibles clicked softly in shock, but before he could process the full weight of Ainz's command, the Overlord's voice grew sharper, colder.
"Exterminate the Lizardmen!" Ainz declared, his words reverberating through the throne room like a death knell. "This time, without relying on anyone else."
The room fell into a tense silence. Cocytus's multifaceted eyes widened as he struggled to comprehend the enormity of what had just been ordered. His towering form stiffened, and though he could not physically sweat, the feeling of mounting pressure was palpable.
Albedo stepped forward, her expression alight with fervent approval. "A fantastic idea, Ainz-sama!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with reverence. "Cocytus will expunge his sin of being defeated, along with all the Lizardmen! A perfect solution befitting your infinite wisdom!"
Her tone, dripping with enthusiasm, was matched only by the gleam in her golden eyes as she looked at Cocytus, her smile sharp and unyielding. Cocytus felt the weight of her expectations settle heavily upon him.
Beside Ainz, Kana clasped her hands together, her golden aura shimmering with renewed excitement. Her voice, normally sweet and innocent, now carried an unsettling undertone of glee. "Yes, Ainz-sama! To wipe out the Lizardmen completely would be the ultimate penance. Their very existence would be erased, and the stain of defeat… utterly obliterated!"
Her expression shifted, her smile growing wider, revealing an almost eerie delight in the notion. Her golden eyes gleamed unnaturally, her joy so fervent it bordered on disturbing. Yet, in the warped world of Nazarick, such sentiments were nothing out of the ordinary.
Cocytus, however, felt the intensity of their words and gazes closing in on him like a vice.
'UTTERLY. WIPED. FROM. EXISTENCE,' Cocytus thought, a faint shiver reverberating through his sturdy frame. His multifaceted mind raced, sifting through the weight of Ainz-sama's expectations and his own fear of further failure.
"Lord. Ainz-Sama…" he began, his voice trembling slightly despite its usual commanding tone, each word laden with the weight of his turmoil.
The weight of the Overlord's crimson gaze intensified, and Cocytus hesitated, his thoughts a swirling maelstrom. Across the room, Mare and Aura exchanged confused glances.
Mare shifted nervously, clutching his staff tightly, and whispered to his sister, "Aura… why is Cocytus acting so hesitant?"
Aura, her sharp eyes narrowing as she studied the Ice Guardian, replied in a low voice, "I'm not sure, but he's definitely got something on his mind. I wonder if he's planning something…"
Cocytus's claws flexed slightly as though trying to channel his unease into something physical. His mandibles clicked faintly as he spoke again, his deep voice resonating with tension.
"I. HAVE. A. REQUEST. I. WOULD. LIKE. TO. MAKE, AINZ-SAMA,"
Cocytus bowed deeply, his mandibles trembling as he spoke with a rare vulnerability in his voice. "I. BEG. OF. YOU, LORD. AINZ-SAMA…"
Before he could finish, Albedo's sharp voice cut through the air like a whip. Her golden eyes blazed with fury as she took a step forward, her expression fierce. "You, who have brought defeat to glorious Nazarick, dare to petition Lord Ainz-sama?!" she spat, her tone laced with venom. "Remember your place, Cocytus! Such audacity is unbecoming of one who has tarnished our master's name."
Kana's aura flared almost instantly, her golden glow deepening into an ominous intensity. Her gaze snapped to Cocytus, her expression shifting from a moment of curiosity to one of outright disdain. "Cocytus…" she began, her voice icy and sharp, each word a verbal dagger. "You should-"
Her words were cut short as Ainz raised a skeletal hand, his gesture calm yet carrying undeniable authority. "It's alright, Kana. Albedo," he said, his voice measured. The crimson glow of his eyes dimmed slightly as he regarded his guardians. "Let him speak."
Both Kana and Albedo froze, their fervor tempered by their master's intervention. Kana's aura flickered, her expression still etched with anger, though she took a step back and clasped her hands tightly. Albedo, too, bit her lip, bowing her head slightly as she returned to her place, though her golden eyes still burned with restrained indignation.
Ainz's gaze returned to Cocytus, and his voice softened slightly, though it retained its commanding tone. "Would you lift your face, Cocytus, and tell me what your request is?"
Cocytus hesitated, the weight of Ainz's words pressing down on him like an avalanche. He swallowed hard, his courage flickering like a candle in the wind. Slowly, he raised his head, his multifaceted eyes meeting Ainz's crimson gaze. What he saw froze him to the core, an expression on Ainz's skeletal face that he couldn't describe. It wasn't anger, nor was it disappointment. It was something far more profound, an unreadable aura that made Cocytus's fear swell tenfold.
"Well, Cocytus?" Ainz prompted, his voice patient yet firm. "I simply want to know what you're thinking and what you would like to say."
The words hung in the air, a challenge and an invitation all at once, as Cocytus struggled to find the strength to answer.
Cocytus took a deep, steadying breath, summoning what remained of his courage as he prepared to voice the plea that had been weighing heavily on his mind. His mandibles clicked softly, betraying his inner turmoil, but his tone was resolute as he spoke.
""I. AM. AGAINST. KILLING. ALL. OF. THE. LIZARDMEN," Cocytus rumbled, his voice carrying a weight of conviction that echoed throughout the throne room. "I. BEG. YOU. AINZ-SAMA… SHOW. THEM. MERCY." His mandibles clicked softly as he lowered his head even further, cold mist escaping in steady streams, a physical manifestation of his unwavering plea.
The room fell silent, the air growing thick with tension. Albedo's golden eyes widened in shock, her composure breaking for a moment before her fury returned in full force. She stepped forward, her voice sharp and incredulous. "Cocytus, do you realize what you are saying?!"
Before her words could escalate further, Kana's aura flared once more, her lips parting to voice her indignation. However, before either could speak again, Ainz's voice sliced through the tension like a blade, colder and more menacing than ever.
"Do not disturb me again," Ainz commanded, his tone carrying an unyielding authority that froze both Kana and Albedo in their tracks.
Albedo immediately dropped to one knee, her head bowed deeply. "I beg your pardon, Ainz-sama. Please forgive me," she said, her voice trembling with both shame and respect.
Kana, too, lowered her gaze, her golden aura dimming slightly as she stepped back in silence, the fire in her expression now tempered by her master's command.
Ainz's crimson gaze fixed on Cocytus once more, the skeletal figure leaning slightly forward on the Throne of Kings. His voice, though calm, carried an undercurrent of expectation that sent shivers through the guardians. "Now then, Cocytus," he began, his tone sharp and deliberate, "you must have a pretty good reason for your request. Something that will benefit the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Now, tell me what that is."
Cocytus nodded deeply, his mandibles clicking as he gathered his thoughts. "Yes, my lord," he replied, his voice steady despite the immense pressure bearing down on him.
Cocytus straightened slightly, his mandibles clicking as he gathered his thoughts. "THERE. IS. A. CHANCE. THAT. VALIANT. WARRIORS. WILL. APPEAR. AMONG. THEIR. NUMBERS," he began, his deep voice steady, though the weight of the room pressed heavily on him. "IN. MY. JUDGMENT. IT. WOULD. BE. MORE. BENEFICIAL. FOR. NAZARICK. TO. HAVE. THE. LIZARDMEN. PLEDGE. LOYALTY. TO. US. AND. BECOME. OUR. SUBORDINATES," Cocytus rumbled, his tone resolute and deliberate. "THEIR. SKILLS. AND. KNOWLEDGE. OF. THEIR. SWAMPY. TERRAIN. COULD. SERVE. US. WELL."
Ainz rested his skeletal fingers against the armrest of the Throne of Kings, his crimson eyes gleaming with intrigue. "That is indeed a convincing proposal," he said, his tone thoughtful. "If we were to use the Lizardmen's corpses to create undead, they would only be of about the same level as those created from human corpses."
Cocytus seized the opening, his tone more confident as he continued, "IN. THAT. CASE-"
"However!" Ainz's voice rang out, cutting through Cocytus's words and halting him mid-sentence. "It would be more cost-effective to use undead created by me than to leave the Lizardmen alive."
The words struck like a hammer, and Cocytus faltered for a moment, stunned. He met Ainz's piercing gaze and found no overt malice, but a subtle prompting, as though his master were silently encouraging him to expand upon his reasoning rather than outright dismissing his suggestion.
Swallowing his growing uncertainty, Cocytus pressed forward. "If there were any other benefits…" Ainz leaned back slightly, his crimson gaze steady. "I'd like to hear them."
"WELL, I-" Cocytus began again, but Ainz raised a hand, cutting him off once more.
"How about it, Cocytus?" Ainz said, his tone carrying a note of finality. "If you have nothing more, then you won't mind exterminating them, yes?"
The room fell into a tense silence. Cocytus lowered his head, the words caught in his throat, as he wrestled with his growing doubt and the weight of his master's expectations.
"I see," Ainz said after a moment, his voice calm yet laced with disappointment. "That's too bad."
Before the finality of Ainz's words could settle, Kana's voice broke through. "Master," she said, her golden aura shimmering faintly as she shifted her posture on the throne's armrest. Her tone carried a blend of respect and cautious excitement.
Ainz turned his head to face her, his crimson eyes softening slightly. "Yes, Kana?"
Kana's golden gaze met his, and her lips curled into a small, thoughtful smile. "What if we were to use the Lizardmen in a governability experiment?" she suggested, her voice bright with enthusiasm.
Ainz's crimson eyes widened fractionally, and he leaned back in the throne. "Ho, now this sounds like an interesting idea," he said, his tone carrying an undercurrent of curiosity and approval.
Kana's golden eyes sparkled as she spoke, her voice filled with a mix of excitement and conviction. "Yes. The time will likely come when we will be handling different races and powers. I humbly submit that we ought to perform an experiment in governing, where we rule the Lizardmen's villages by means other than fear. This could prepare us for when that time comes."
Ainz sat in contemplation for a moment before he suddenly slammed his skeletal hand against the armrest of the Throne of Kings, thankfully, not the one where Kana sat. The sound echoed through the chamber, startling everyone. His crimson eyes burned brighter as he spoke. "A terrific suggestion, Kana!"
Kana's face lit up with pure joy. Unable to contain her emotions, she leapt from her perch on the throne's armrest and hugged Ainz tightly. "Thank you so much, Master!" she exclaimed, her voice overflowing with gratitude and happiness.
Ainz, though momentarily taken aback, returned the embrace with a rare warmth, his skeletal hand gently patting her back. Off to the side, Albedo's smile remained perfectly composed, but a flicker of jealousy flashed in her golden eyes. She masked it swiftly, her expression returning to one of dutiful admiration.
After a moment, Ainz released Kana and addressed the room. "Then we will accept Kana's proposal and shift from exterminating the Lizardmen to occupying them."
The guardians straightened in unison, their voices echoing through the throne room. "Yes, Lord Ainz-sama!"
Ainz turned his attention back to Kana, his tone softer but no less sincere. "Kana, I am impressed."
Kana's cheeks flushed with happiness as she looked up at him, the joy evident in her wide, shining eyes. She beamed as Ainz gave her a gentle head pat, his skeletal fingers lightly brushing her golden hair. She closed her eyes and leaned into the gesture, her childlike innocence radiating through the moment.
"How can you say that, Master?!" Kana exclaimed, her voice a mix of disbelief and adoration. "I'm sure you were already thinking of this before I said anything! You were just waiting for Cocytus to say something, weren't you?" Her tone carried a playful innocence, as though she were pointing out an obvious truth.
Ainz chuckled softly, his tone amused yet firm. "Hmph, you give me too much credit, Kana. All I wanted was for Cocytus to display some of his own thinking, regardless of what it was."
Ainz rose slightly from the throne, his crimson gaze sweeping over the guardians assembled before him. "Listen to me, Guardians! Orders are not things for you to blindly obey and carry out. You must mull them over a little before you act!" His voice grew louder, filling the chamber with his commanding presence. "Consider what will lead to the greatest benefit for Nazarick!"
The guardians, standing tall and resolute, responded in perfect unison, their voices filled with reverence and determination. "Yes, my Lord!"
Ainz settled back into his seat momentarily, his crimson gaze resting on Cocytus with unrelenting authority. "Now then, Cocytus," he began, his voice calm yet heavy with meaning. "Consequently, your punishment must be changed."
Cocytus stiffened, preparing himself for whatever judgment his master would deliver.
"You will now govern the Lizardmen," Ainz declared. "You are to instill loyalty toward Nazarick within them. Rule through fear is forbidden. You will show them the benefits of submission to our rule while maintaining their usefulness to the Tomb."
The weight of those words struck Cocytus with surprising relief. Though the task was daunting, it was far less severe than the eradication he had feared. In his mind, he sighed with icy relief, though his body remained composed. Bowing his head deeply, he replied, "AS. YOU. WISH." A frosty mist escaped his mandibles as he spoke, a visual expression of his tension dissipating. "I, COCYTUS, PROMISE. TO WORK. HARD ENOUGH. TO MEASURE UP. TO THE GREAT MERCY. YOU HAVE SHOWN ME. LORD AINZ-SAMA,"
Ainz nodded, his gaze lingering on Cocytus as if to gauge his sincerity. Satisfied, he rose fully from the throne, his imposing form radiating an aura of command that demanded attention. "All right, Guardians. I order you all to move out."
As Ainz stepped forward, Kana gracefully jumped down from the armrest of the throne, landing softly by his side. She walked in perfect sync with him, her small frame glowing with an almost ethereal light as she kept her eyes ahead, utterly focused. Together, they exuded an image of unmatched authority and devotion.
Ainz's tone was sharp and direct as he continued, "One team will act as a decoy, and another will be tasked with flaunting our power to the Lizardmen."
He turned his head slightly toward Albedo. "Albedo, make ready our soldiers. Activate Gargantua as well."
Albedo bowed deeply, her golden eyes glinting with understanding. "As you command, Ainz-sama." Rising slightly, she added, "May I assume that by sending a decoy, you are considering the possibility of someone observing us? That this misdirection is to give them the wrong impression of our true intentions?"
Ainz's glowing crimson eyes fixed on her, a faint sense of approval emanating from his posture. "That is correct," he replied simply.
Albedo bowed once more, her tone carrying the satisfaction of someone who lived to serve. "Very well, Ainz-sama."
Ainz raised his voice slightly, addressing the entire assembly. "All right, everyone, time to get moving!"
In the blink of an eye, Ainz and Kana disappeared, vanishing in a flash of arcane light as a teleportation spell activated. Cocytus remained kneeling for a moment longer, his thoughts racing with a mixture of gratitude and resolve. But as his gaze inadvertently drifted to where Kana had been standing, he caught the lingering intensity in her expression. Her golden eyes, bright and innocent moments ago, had conveyed an unspoken message: Disappoint Ainz-sama again, and I will not forgive your blunder twice.
The weight of her gaze sent a chill through Cocytus's icy form. Bowing his head once more in silent resolve, he vowed to ensure that the Lizardmen would become a testament to his loyalty and Ainz-sama's mercy.
As the teleportation light faded, leaving the throne room quieter, the guardians, save for Albedo, began moving together, their steps measured yet laced with curiosity. The air between them was thick with unspoken thoughts, their minds turning over the recent events and the implications of Ainz-sama's decision.
Demiurge, ever composed, adjusted his glasses thoughtfully, his smile sharpening into something more knowing. "I see..." he murmured, his voice carrying a tone of realization.
The others paused, their gazes turning toward him in unison. Confusion flickered across their faces, their silence an unspoken question: What are you talking about?
Demiurge noticed their stares and let out a soft chuckle. "Ah, my apologies. It seems I have spoken out of turn. What I mean to say is..." He adjusted his glasses again, the gleam of intellect shining in his eyes. "This is most likely the outcome that Ainz-sama desired all along."
The guardians exchanged glances, their curiosity piqued. Shalltear, her crimson eyes gleaming with interest, tilted her head. "The very beginning, you say? What do you mean by that, Demiurge?"
Demiurge clasped his hands behind his back, exuding calm confidence. "Consider the chain of events. From the outset, Ainz-sama placed Cocytus in command of the Lizardmen campaign. He chose to test Cocytus, to allow him to gauge the strength of the Lizardmen, not merely for their extermination, but to determine their potential worth. This outcome, the decision to rule over them rather than annihilate them, was surely part of Ainz-sama's grand design."
Albedo, who had been lingering near the throne, turned to face the group. Her movements were deliberate, her expression composed, though a flicker of doubt shadowed her golden eyes. "Are you suggesting," she asked, her voice measured, "that everything has unfolded according to Ainz-sama's plan?"
"Precisely," Demiurge replied, his calm, knowing smile unwavering. "Every action, Cocytus's initial misstep, the choice to spare the Lizardmen, even the progression of this discussion, all of it aligns with Ainz-sama's unparalleled foresight."
Aura's expression brightened, her youthful voice breaking through the moment of reflection. "Leave it to Lord Ainz-sama! He really does think of everything!"
Mare, standing beside her, fidgeted nervously with his staff. His voice trembled slightly as he spoke. "B-But then, um... does that mean L-Lord Ainz-sama already expected Cocytus to... fail?"
Demiurge let out a soft, amused laugh, shaking his head slightly. "Not failure, Mare. Rather, he likely anticipated that Cocytus would probe the Lizardmen's strength and adaptability. Whether they proved resilient or weak, Ainz-sama had already calculated a course of action to ensure that the final result benefited Nazarick. It was not about failure but about discovery and strategy."
Cocytus, who had remained silent throughout, felt a cold wave of awe wash over him. HE. KNEW. ALL. ALONG? The realization struck deeply, solidifying his respect and reverence for his master. Ainz-sama's wisdom, his ability to see beyond the immediate and into the infinite possibilities, left Cocytus humbled.
Shalltear clasped her hands together, her crimson eyes sparkling with fervent admiration. "That's Lord Ainz-sama for you!" she exclaimed, her pale cheeks flushing with excitement. "To think he anticipated every step of this campaign! It's no wonder he was chosen as the guildmaster of the Supreme Ones, his brilliance is unparalleled!"
Her voice, filled with unrestrained pride, echoed through the chamber, the guardians falling into an awed silence as her words settled over them. Cocytus bowed his head slightly, his icy breath visible as it escaped in a soft exhale. AINZ-SAMA'S. WISDOM. TRULY. KNOWS. NO. BOUNDS... I. WILL. ENSURE. HIS. EXPECTATIONS. ARE. NOT. DISAPPOINTED. AGAIN."
{POV: Kana}
{Location: 9th Floor, Nazarick – Entrance of the Throne Room}
{Time: Moments Before the Royal Procession Begins}
The air hummed with a quiet, almost sacred energy, as if even the very walls of Nazarick were holding their breath in anticipation. Kana stood at the base of the towering double doors leading to the Throne Room, her golden eyes shimmering with excitement and reverence. Her small hands clutched the hem of her intricately embroidered robe, a robe that she had carefully chosen to complement Ainz-sama's majestic presence.
'Master Ainz-sama…' she thought, her heart swelling with a mixture of pride and adoration. 'This entire world bends to your will, as it should. Every moment, every breath we take, exists solely to glorify you.'
She cast a quick glance at her reflection in the polished obsidian floor. Every detail of her appearance was immaculate, as it had to be. Her delicate frame was adorned in a golden-embroidered robe that glowed faintly under the light of the magical torches, the aura of her joy radiating softly around her. Satisfied with her appearance, Kana turned her attention to the others gathering around her.
The sound of the Guardians assembling was a harmonious symphony of measured steps and whispered exchanges, each movement imbued with purpose and precision. Albedo stood closest to the towering doors, her golden eyes sharp with unwavering determination, every inch of her posture exuding authority and elegance. Demiurge, calm and calculating, carried an aura of intellectual superiority, his faint, enigmatic smile hinting at plans too intricate for others to fathom. Shalltear adjusted her crimson gown with a practiced grace, her ruby eyes glinting with an eagerness that seemed to brim with anticipation. To the side, Aura and Mare stood as a contrasting pair, Aura radiated a confident energy, her sharp gaze full of readiness, while Mare fidgeted nervously, clutching his staff as if it tethered him to composure. Cocytus towered in silent vigilance, his multifaceted eyes gleaming in the flickering torchlight, his presence a testament to unyielding discipline and strength.
Kana's lips softened into a smile as she regarded her fellow Guardians. Each one was a flawless masterpiece, crafted by the Supreme Beings to serve the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Their forms, their powers, and even their distinct personalities reflected the precise vision of their creators, blending together to form an unmatched symphony of purpose. Yet, despite their grandeur, none among them could ever rival the one they all lived to serve.
'They are magnificent,' Kana mused, her golden eyes flickering with admiration. Her gaze lingered momentarily on each of them. Albedo, the epitome of loyalty and poise, was a symbol of unwavering devotion to their shared master. Demiurge, with his razor-sharp intellect, seemed as though he could reshape reality itself with nothing more than his schemes. Shalltear's deadly elegance and unshakable reverence stood as a testament to the strength of her design. Aura and Mare, opposites in temperament yet perfectly balanced, radiated a raw and undeniable potential. Cocytus, ever the disciplined warrior, seemed to embody martial perfection, a living monument to strength and command.
As she took them in, Kana felt a pang of pride, not for herself, but for what Nazarick symbolized. 'They are each a reflection of the Supreme Beings' brilliance,' she thought, her gaze shining with quiet reverence. 'Every one of them, a testament to their creators' unparalleled artistry and divinity.'But then her thoughts shifted, drawn irresistibly to Ainz-sama. Her heart swelled with a reverence so profound it seemed to fill her entire being. His very existence was a force unto itself, commanding reality to bend and shape itself to his will.
'Master stands above all,' Kana reflected, her golden eyes softening with unshakable devotion. 'He is the pillar that holds Nazarick, the axis around which everything turns. We are his creations, yes, but more than that, we are his instruments, his tools to execute his boundless vision.'
Her gaze drifted upward toward the towering double doors of the Throne Room, a faint warmth blossoming in her chest. 'These halls are his domain, a reflection of his genius and power. Even this moment exists because of him. Every stone, every flicker of magical light, breathes with his essence. And I…' Her fingers tightened around the hem of her robe. 'I have the privilege to stand closest to him. To serve him not just as his Guardian but as his Staff, a part of his very being.'
Her thoughts lingered on this bond, and the weight of it filled her with awe. She was not like the others. While each of the Guardians had been carefully crafted by the Supreme Beings, she was unique in her connection to Ainz-sama. She wasn't just an extension of his will; she was infused with his power, his essence. This truth resonated within her core, giving her a purpose so pure, so absolute, that it left no room for doubt or hesitation.
Her golden eyes glimmered as her thoughts deepened. 'My existence is not just to serve but to magnify him. To ensure his greatness is known and respected by all who encounter him. I am his voice, his shield, his symbol of authority. To fail in this would be to fail in my very purpose.'
Her devotion ran deeper than loyalty, it was love, though not the kind that mortals spoke of. It was the love of creation for its creator, of a masterpiece for its artist. It was boundless, unshakable, and burned within her with an intensity that no words could adequately describe. 'To be near him, to witness his genius, to bask in his presence, these are blessings beyond what any being could hope to deserve. And yet, he grants them freely, his mercy and wisdom infinite.'
Kana's lips parted slightly, a soft breath escaping as her thoughts spiraled further. 'I am nothing without him. Every thread of my being exists because he willed it so. Every action I take must reflect his perfection. I cannot falter, not for a moment. To falter would be to betray the very purpose of my creation. And that…' Her heart tightened at the thought. 'That is something I will never allow.'
The faint sound of movement brought her back to the present. The Guardians were nearly ready, their forms poised and disciplined as they awaited the signal to begin the procession. Kana's gaze briefly swept over them once more, but her thoughts remained tethered to Ainz-sama.
'Master, your brilliance eclipses all. No Guardian, no Supreme Being, no entity in any realm can compare. My only desire is to see your will fulfilled, your vision realized, your greatness recognized by all who stand before you.'
As the towering double doors of the Throne Room began to creak open, Kana's heart raced with anticipation. The flood of golden light spilling into the grand hallway illuminated the assembled Guardians and reflected brilliantly off the polished obsidian floor. Each step forward felt like a reaffirmation of her purpose, a reminder that she was here, in this moment, because of Ainz-sama's boundless wisdom and will.
The grandeur of the Throne Room unfolded before her, its magnificence captivating even after countless visits. Massive pillars of black stone lined the room, their surfaces etched with glowing runes that pulsed faintly like veins of power coursing through the chamber. The crystalline chandeliers overhead cast a soft, ethereal light that danced across the intricately carved walls, depicting scenes of conquest and creation, a testament to Nazarick's glory.
At the far end of the chamber, elevated on a platform that seemed to command the room itself, was the [Throne of Kings]. Ainz-sama sat upon it, already positioned as though he had been waiting since the beginning of time itself. His skeletal form, adorned in flowing robes of black and gold, exuded an aura of authority so absolute that even the room seemed to bow to him. The crimson glow of his eyes burned with an intensity that sent shivers through Kana, not from fear, but from reverence.
Every time she saw him like this, her devotion only deepened. 'Master Ainz-sama, you are truly the pinnacle of creation. To serve you is not just a duty, it is the meaning of my existence.'
Kana moved forward with the other Guardians, her small frame dwarfed by their towering forms but no less significant. As they approached the throne, she felt the weight of her memories tug at her thoughts. This room was not just the seat of Ainz-sama's power, it was where her existence began.
'The Day of Blessing,' she thought, a faint warmth filling her chest as she recalled that sacred moment. She could still feel the hum of power in the air, the way the Throne Room seemed alive as Ainz-sama's voice resonated through it, willing her into being. It was the day she was given purpose, the day she became a vessel of his will. 'I was born to serve you, Master. To bring glory to your name and to protect everything you have built.'
Yet, even in the comfort of that memory, there was a flicker of doubt. In Yggdrasil, she had always remained within the sanctuary of Nazarick, content to fulfill her duties from the safety of its walls. But now, in this new world, everything had changed. Ainz-sama's vision extended far beyond the borders of their sanctuary, and Kana realized she had the chance to prove herself in ways she never could before.
'This is my opportunity,' she thought, her resolve hardening as she moved into place beside Ainz-sama on the armrest of his throne. Her golden aura shimmered faintly as she settled, her gaze fixed ahead but her thoughts entirely on him. 'I will show Master that I am more than a relic of Yggdrasil. I will prove my worth in this world. Not just as his Staff, but as an extension of his greatness.'
Beside the throne, Albedo stood with perfect poise, her golden eyes sharp with focus as she awaited Ainz-sama's command. The Guardians formed a line before the throne, their expressions a mix of reverence and determination. The atmosphere was heavy with expectation, every gaze fixed on the Overlord who sat at the center of it all.
Ainz-sama leaned forward slightly, his skeletal fingers resting lightly on the armrest. His crimson gaze swept across the room, settling briefly on each of the Guardians before finally addressing them. His voice, deep and resonant, filled the chamber, its calm authority sending a ripple of energy through those assembled.
Ainz-sama's crimson gaze lingered on each Guardian, his voice steady and resonant as he began. "Loyal Guardians of Nazarick, today marks a pivotal moment in our continued dominance of this new world. The recent campaign has revealed much about our strengths and areas for growth. It is now time to consolidate what we have learned and implement a plan that will secure our supremacy."
His skeletal fingers tapped lightly on the throne's armrest, the sound carrying an eerie echo in the grand chamber. "Our next course of action will involve not only demonstrating Nazarick's overwhelming might but also ensuring that those who oppose us understand their place. Fear alone is not sufficient; we must also weave loyalty into the hearts of those who would otherwise resist."
Kana's golden eyes sparkled with admiration as she listened. Each word felt like a divine decree, resonating with the room's energy. Her heart swelled with pride. 'Master's wisdom is unparalleled. His vision encompasses not only conquest but the very essence of ruling a world.'
Ainz-sama's glowing crimson eyes turned toward Cocytus, his gaze sharp and commanding. The air in the throne room grew heavier as the towering Guardian stepped forward, bowing deeply. His multifaceted eyes glimmered with resolve, his deep voice resonating through the chamber. "AINZ-SAMA, I. AWAIT. YOUR. COMMAND."
"You have been entrusted with overseeing the Lizardmen," Ainz said, his tone calm but carrying the undeniable weight of expectation. His skeletal hand rested on the armrest of the Throne of Kings as he continued, "This is your chance to rectify past mistakes."
Before Ainz could continue, Kana's voice rang out, sharp and unwavering, cutting through the air like a blade. Her golden eyes narrowed as she looked at Cocytus, her aura flaring with intensity. "Do not fail Nazarick a second time, Cocytus," she said, her tone a mixture of warning and absolute devotion. The delicate sweetness in her voice was gone, replaced by a chilling resolve that left no room for doubt. "Master has shown you mercy. Do not squander it."
Cocytus stiffened under the weight of Kana's words, his mandibles clicking softly as he lowered his head even further in submission. "FAILURE. IS. NOT. AN. OPTION," he rumbled, his voice filled with both humility and determination. "I. WILL. ENSURE. THAT. THE. LIZARDMEN. BECOME. LOYAL. SERVANTS. OF. NAZARICK."
Ainz observed the exchange in silence, his crimson eyes glowing faintly as he inclined his head slightly. Though he said nothing, his approval of Kana's intervention was evident in the way he let the moment linger before speaking. "See that you do, Cocytus," he said, his voice calm but layered with finality. "There will be no room for excuses."
Cocytus straightened, stepping back into formation, his towering frame radiating determination. Kana glanced at him briefly, her own thoughts briefly mirroring the same intensity. 'We all serve Master's will. To falter even once is to fail in the greatest honor imaginable.'
Ainz leaned back slightly on the [Throne of Kings], his gaze sweeping the room once more. "Now, Guardians, let us proceed with the next stage of our plan."
He raised his skeletal hand, and with a subtle motion, the air behind the assembled Guardians shimmered and twisted. A swirling black void began to form, a [Gate]. Its edges glowed faintly with an otherworldly light, the swirling depths promising passage to another location.
"Through this gate lies the beginning of our next conquest," Ainz declared, his voice resonating with finality. "The world will tremble before Nazarick's might."
Kana's gaze flicked to the [Gate], her golden eyes wide with a mixture of awe and excitement. The thrill of the unknown, the opportunity to serve her master in a capacity beyond what she had ever known, it filled her with a fiery determination. 'This is it. This is my chance to show Ainz-sama my worth. To prove that I am not just an extension of his power but a force that magnifies his greatness.'
Beside her, Albedo's golden eyes glinted with fervor as she nodded to Ainz-sama. "As you command, Ainz-sama. Nazarick's glory will shine across this new world."
The other Guardians echoed her sentiment, their voices ringing in unison. "FOR NAZARICK! ALL HAIL AINZ OOAL GOWN"
Ainz inclined his head, his skeletal form radiating quiet authority. "Then let us begin."
The room seemed to hold its breath as the Guardians turned to face the [Gate], their movements precise and deliberate. The first steps toward Nazarick's continued dominion had been set in motion.
