Chapter 32

Harry was able to duck into the chamber of secrets over the next few days and he took one of the basilisk fangs from the petrified corpse, happy to see that the stone tooth still had venom leaking from it. He wrapped the whole thing up in a cloth and placed it in a chest with the strongest locking charms he knew before Stepping back up into the school then over to his home for a few minutes, just long enough to leave the package with Fleur so she could take it with her to the bank in the morning.

Having the fang ready in the bank meant that when Harry went there to help with destroying the Horcrux they had sitting in their duelling arena, everything would already be set up and all he would have to do is stab the bloody thing.

While he was at the house Fleur had also given Harry a stack of parchment from the bank. It was documentation of all the House of Malfoy holdings. At least the legal ones. Harry was sure someone like Lucius would have had off the book deals as well but they would have died with him.

Back at Hogwarts, Harry was looking through all the documents trying to get it all worked out in his head. Luckily he had Hermione to help him.

"Okay let's see here. This stack here are loans. The Malfoys seem to have loaned out a lot of money to people with very different rates of interest. Oh I see, people they liked got low interest rates and a long time to pay it back. People who they don't like got higher interest and shorter times to pay it off with some rather predatory late payment and default clauses." Hermione said, leafing through a stack.

"Yeah, those are the easy ones to understand. I was thinking about renegotiating some of the harsh ones to be fairer. Nothing I can do about the ones to Malfoy's friends as it requires the consent of both sides to renegotiate a contract and they would never agree to harsher conditions. Though even those contracts have some penalty clauses. I will ask Gringotts to be extra diligent regarding those contracts as they are all to death eater families and anything we can do to make their lives harder will help."

"Makes sense to me. What are the documents you're looking through now?" Hermione asked, indicating the stack of parchment Harry was currently leafing through.

"Business investments. They are more complicated because they are a mix of loans, owning a share of the profits, discounts on products or even outright being given some products for free." Harry explained.

"It's not exactly free if Malfoy invested in the business." Hermione corrected him.

Harry sighed. "You know what I mean. Also, I think some of these are just legal fronts for some really shady business." Harry handed Hermione one of the documents. "Take this one for example. An antique dealer in Hogsmeade. Malfoy and a few select others get first access to 'exclusive' items that the shop acquires. I think that is code for stolen."

Hermione looked over the document and she agreed with Harry's assessment. "What do you plan to do about it?" She asked.

"I don't know," Harry admitted. "I can cut off ties with the businesses but it's not like I can sell the shares.'

"Why not just send a copy of the documents and your suspicions to the D.M.L.E.? If you give them your permission as part owner to investigate then they won't even need a warrant to search the place. You'll lose out on any value from the shares but I doubt they would sell you anything illegal anyway. It doesn't matter if you own part of the business, they don't, and never will trust you."

"Yeah you're right, that is the best idea. Gha!" Harry let out a sound as he read the next document.

"What is it?" Hermione asked a little confused at what he could have read to make him react like that.

"The next business is a 'massage parlour' in knockturn alley." Harry said.

Hermione turned a little green. "Please tell me you don't get free samples for that one."

"No, just gold. The question is what do I do with it? I own a full third." Harry asked.

Hermione looked thoughtful for a moment then said. "Honestly it can go multiple ways. Some places are little better than slavery and some are really high-end where the woman can earn a lot of money. We need to find out what type it is and if the women need help. If they need help we do that. If they don't we can either sell or keep the shares."

Harry looked at the document again. "Considering it's Malfoy I don't think there is much chance the workers are treated well."

Hermione sighed. "You're right. We should ask Sirius to look into it. If it's bad we can just give each of the women enough that they won't need to go back. What else is there."

Harry flicked through the papers. "Let's see. Farms that grow potion ingredients, potion breweries, shares in Witch Weekly, Quidditch Weekly and the Daily Prophet and we now own a restaurant in Hogsmeade."

"The farms and breweries are probably legitimate. Though the breweries probably provide the occasional illegal potion. The media companies are probably so that the press never comes after him. And I think restaurants are often used for money laundering." Hermione guessed.

"How can a restaurant be used to launder money?" Harry asked not knowing about such things

"Well, it's the type of business where people can have a bunch of stolen money and just say they got it selling food to customers making the money legitimate." Hermione explained and Harry nodded his understanding.

"We should get someone to look into all of these businesses. The question is who." Harry mused.

"It may be worth getting a solicitor to look into everything. They probably know more about what to look for and they will definitely know what's legal and what's not. I know they are expensive but you can afford it now."

"Yeah, you're probably right. I will ask Sirius to find one he trusts. Then I won't have to keep trying to wrap my brain around all of this." Harry agreed and started to pack up.

-ϟϟϟ-

The next week in school was uneventful but stressful. A lot of the students were looking at Harry like he was a monster. They all knew that Harry had seized on the opportunity of Draco's formal challenge to kill Lucius and take the Malfoy fortune. What they didn't know was the details.

They didn't know the only reason Harry was able to get his hands on the titles and actually became the Warlock was because Draco had challenged Harry's claim on the Black titles. They didn't know that Lucius had basically committed suicide taking the easy way out, and they didn't know Harry had offered Draco an out of moving to a different school.

To them, mad Warlock Potter had once more used some very questionable old laws to kill another person he had a problem with. Even the majority who agreed that Lucius was scum and needed to be dealt with were looking at Harry like he was a monster that they were happy was pointed well away from them. They were afraid of him.

That, Harry and the others could cope with, if it was all. However, Draco and his friends were constantly watching them all. Their calculating looks broadcasting that they were watching and waiting for an opportunity to get revenge.

Hermione tried talking to Professor McGonagall but just watching and being aware of them wasn't anything she could act on. All Malfoy had to say was he was watching them so he could be ready to defend himself when Harry decided to wipe out the last of the Malfoys.

On a more positive note, on Friday Harry got a letter from Gringotts at breakfast. It was short but good news.

Mr Potter

We are writing to inform you Narcissa Malfoy has officially surrendered. As you already had access to all her accounts from the duel with her son's second and the death of her husband there are no additional assets to report and we will be following your set procedure later today when Miss Delacour is available to deliver Widow Malfoy to the wizarding authorities bound to confess her crimes.

Sincerely

Manager Bonesnapper

That was great. Not that it got Harry anything he didn't already have, though the fact that he was handing her over to the D.M.L.E when he could just kill her would probably help his reputation a little. No, the reason this was good news was mostly because it was one less thing for him to worry about.

Harry handed the letter to Hermione once he was done and she quickly read through it. "Do you think we should do anything? Having Draco's mother in limbo would give us something to hold over him. 'Behave or your mother goes to Azkaban' type deal." Hermione asked when she was finished with the letter.

"Nope. It would just make Malfoy more likely to try something. I wouldn't put it past him to try and kidnap you or Fleur to do a prisoner exchange. It's not worth the risk and this way it's one less problem to keep track of." Harry explained his thoughts on the matter.

"Fair." Hermione agreed. "But you know nothing is going to stop him from doing something eventually. I just wish there was something that could be done about him now."

"You know the law." Harry said, sounding tired despite the fact it was the first thing in the morning.

"Oh screw the law Harry. That pile of dragon shit is plotting to kill you. I know it, you know it, and everyone else knows it. Besides, it's only illegal if we get caught." Hermione sounded fired up.

"I thought I was supposed to be the bloodthirsty monster." Joked Harry. "And like you said, everyone knows Malfoy is planning to come after us. If anything happened to him you and I would be suspect numbers one and two with our friends filling up the next few places on the list. And let's be honest, as free as we are with unbreakable vows of truth, if we didn't give one it would basically prove to everyone it was us."

Hermione grudgingly gave a grunt of agreement. "What of your appointment at the bank tomorrow?" She asked, referring to the appointment he had to go destroy the horcrux.

"The plan is simple. I will go there, cast the green Patronus and stab the cup with the fang. I don't see the point in planning more than that. Plans don't tend to survive long anyway so best to keep it loose and open." Harry said.

"In other words, something is going to happen and you're going to end up fighting for your life again. Without me there to back you up." Hermione sounded like she was working herself up for an argument.

"Nobody is going to be there. I don't want it trying to possess you again. I don't want it trying to possess Fleur or any of our friends or any of the goblins. Whatever my mother did, however it works, I seem to have the only defence against it. If it was you who had this protection instead of me would you want me there being vulnerable?" Harry asked, taking the wind out of her sails.

"Fine, but I'm at least coming to the bank with you. I will stay with Fleur so I won't have to wait to find out what happens." Hermione told him. One of the perks of being seventeen now, Hermione didn't need her parent's permission to leave the school.

Harry knew he couldn't expect any more from Hermione so he just agreed. The rest of the day was the same as the rest of the week. A lot of being on edge expecting something to happen any moment but ultimately nothing but regular activities.

-ϟϟϟ-

The headline the next morning was all about Narcissa Malfoy being in D.M.L.E custody. Nothing had gotten out to the press as of yet except people seeing the woman being taken into custody, but there was some speculation about whether the woman had committed her own crimes or if she was just guilty of aiding in her husband's scams.

Harry and Hermione though weren't too interested in the paper's speculation. At least, not beyond the fact that it had Malfoy storming out of the Great Hall in a raging temper. Harry and Hermione were more focused on getting to Gringotts.

They left from the Headmistress' office flooing to the Leaky Cauldron. Headmistress McGonagall wished them luck but it was obvious from her tone that she was starting to think that Harry and Hermione's frequent trips away from the school were getting to be too much.

The Leaky Cauldron was pretty much dead this early and the two teens quickly made their way through the alley to the bank, only relaxing after they were through the doors of the bank where they felt safe.

Fleur was already waiting for them and as soon as she saw them she had closed the distance between them and had them wrapped up in hugs and gave each of them a quick chaste kiss. "Oh I miss having you at home."

"We miss you as well. But it's Christmas holidays in a couple of weeks and you will have us to yourself for two whole weeks." Hermione said, putting a flirtatious emphasis on the words.

"Did you make the arrangements for us to go to France?" Harry asked, wondering about the practicalities.

"Oui. We are travelling on the muggle train that goes under the channel. It will be easier to avoid any of the death eaters knowing we are out of the country that way. And it even leaves from the train station right next door to King's Cross so you can just get off the Express and walk across the street and get on the train to Paris. It will be a long day of travelling but at least it's easy."

"As much as I can understand wanting to spend time with your mate Mr Potter, Manager BoneSnapper is waiting for you." A goblin runner came over and interrupted them.

Harry really didn't want to rush off but he also didn't want to keep BoneSnapper waiting. "Very well, lead the way. Runner…" Harry trailed off giving the goblin he hadn't met before an opportunity to supply his name.

"NoseThumper." The goblin supplied. As he led Harry, not to Bonesnaper's office like Harry had expected, but to the carts. It looked like they didn't want to waste time talking and wanted to deal with the horcrux as soon as possible. Considering that Harry and the rest hadn't been able to give them any information on what the horcrux was due to their unbreakable vows to the department of mysteries, Harry could understand them being nervous.

The carts were as disorienting as ever and dropped Harry and NoseThumper off on the same underground platform he had been on only a week ago, getting ready for his duel with McNair. Waiting for him was BoneSnapper, the bank manager Harry usually dealt with, and GoldThumb, one of the managers Harry normally only saw in meetings. With them on the platform were six goblins dressed in armour and carrying weapons barring the way down the corridor Harry knew led to the duelling arena.

"Mr Potter. Good to see you are on time." GoldThumb said, giving Harry a respectful nod. "My people have confirmed that you actually provided a basilisk fang. I need to ask how on earth were you able to get your hands on it? A fang that size must have come from a truly massive beast."

"Yeah, the basilisk was huge. From what I know the basilisk was as old as Hogwarts until I killed it a few years ago." Harry had never seen shock and awe on a goblin's face before but Harry casually saying he killed a one thousand-year-old basilisk like it was nothing was enough to do it. "So yeah, all I had to do was break that fang out of its mouth."

"How? Why?" A shocked GoldThumb demanded forgetting his manners in his surprise.

Harry couldn't help but smirk as he remembered telling Fleur the same story for the first time. "How: with a sword. As to why, I didn't like the way it looked at my betrothed. Couldn't let that slide. So where is the fang? I want to get this done as quickly as possible. My ladies are waiting upstairs and I don't want them worrying longer than is necessary."

BoneSnapper shook himself out of his surprise and answered. "I have it right here." He pulled out a moke skin pouch and pulled a small wooden chest just big enough to hold the fang from inside it. "ViperClaw has been moved to another country and we are the only people, human, goblin, or otherwise on this level or the one above and below us. We are hoping that keeping others away will mean that they will be safe. The only ones going with you will be myself and two guards who volunteered."

Harry wanted to object but knew it was pointless. Of course, the bank would want their own witnesses. "I can't guarantee any of you will be safe." He warned knowing it would make no difference but at least no one could claim he didn't give them fair warning.

After confirming they were aware of the risks BoneSnapper led Harry and two of the security goblins to the duelling arena. It hadn't changed one bit since his fight last week. Harry could even remember making some of the footprints he could see. It was completely untouched except that the cup was in the exact middle of the arena.

As Harry looked at it he could feel the increase in pressure causing his scar to ache. Harry drew his mother's wand and cast a Patronus that once more came out green and in the form of a doe. His mother's magic was free to act on its own. Then he pocketed the wand again and pulled out a pair of dragon hide gloves and put them on before he reached for the basilisk fang. Then, the fang in his left hand, his wand in his right, and with a Patronus made of his mother's magic, Harry strode forward to tackle the Horcrux.

Nothing happened as Harry approached. He could still feel the pressure in his scar, so he knew a part of Voldemort was still in the goblet but it didn't do anything. Harry didn't know why it was doing nothing, he honestly expected something a lot more dramatic and dangerous. Yet the fancy one thousand year old cup sat there doing nothing.

Harry hesitated for a second. He assumed this was some type of trap, that Voldemort was playing dead until Harry dropped his guard. Yet this was going to be the best opportunity Harry had so he sprung forward with the fang in hand. He was hoping that by striking suddenly he could land the decisive blow before Voldemort could do whatever it was he was planning.

Yet there was no counter attack and the basilisk fang sank into the metal goblet like it was made of child's modelling clay. There was a sound like a tortured scream from the goblet and it only made Harry press harder using his body weight to force the fang in deeper. Then the screaming stopped and a black mist started to burst from the wound in the cup. Right in Harry's face.

Harry tried to push himself back as he choked and coughed on the thick black smoke but it was too late. Harry fell to the ground as his whole body became nothing but pain and he could feel Voldemort in his head.

"Well well well. What do we have here?" Harry suddenly found himself in the memory of his nursery at Potter cottage, a shade of a twenty something Voldemort standing over the crib of what Harry and Voldemort both now knew to be another part of Voldemort's soul. That however, was something to freak out about later.

Harry picked himself up off the floor and looked around for the shade of his mother only to realise she wasn't there. Then he realised she was currently in the form of a Patronus. While she was still connected to him, the protection she offered him was currently in the Patronus rather than being a part of him. That was probably how this part of Voldemort had been able to get in to begin with. "Didn't anyone ever teach you it's rude to barge in without knocking?" Harry lipped off.

The older shard of Voldemort turned to look at harry. "You know if I hadn't watched your duel with my free roaming counterpart I wouldn't exactly be impressed. A scrawny teenager who looks like they have more ego than talent. But you have skill, child, Skill, power and a streak of ruthlessness that lets you use them to great effect. I don't suppose I can convince you to join me? In exchange for the right oaths I can guarantee the lives of your loved ones." Voldemort offered.

Harry didn't know how but he could tell the offer was genuine. Voldemort would let Harry have his family if Harry bound himself to him. Of course that would mean Harry losing his family anyway. Hermione and Fleur may understand why Harry would make a deal like that but they would never accept it. They would leave him and take their families with them. Tracy would never understand and would see Harry as having betrayed her. She would take Daphne. The rest of his friends would fall somewhere in between. The constant across them all however would be that they would leave him.

The second thing Harry released was that Voldemort was afraid of him. That made sense. Voldemort attacked Harry as a baby and almost died. One of his counterparts attacked Harry during Harry's first school and Harry would have killed him if he wasn't saved by his horcruxes again. In Harry's second year he had faced another shard of Voldemort and he had won again. The pattern repeated every time they met. At the end of the tournament, when Voldemort attacked the school, when Voldemort possessed Hermione, and when Voldemort possessed McNair.

Each part of Voldemort that Harry had faced off with had a story of Harry making them rely on their horcruxes to keep them from dying. Then this part had watched as Harry duelled another part of Voldemort in a completely fair fight and win. It had to be humbling to be one of Britain's most feared dark Lords, an immortal duelist with eminent skill, only to be repeatedly humbled by a teenager.

"I have a better idea. You should run. Run away and hide before I kill you." Harry tried to sound intimidating.

Voldemort however just laughed. "You? Kill me? I'm afraid that's literally impossible. You see this?" He indicated the smaller part of himself stuck in the baby's cot. "As long as that exists I can't die. And the only way to free that and from you is for you to die. I am literally immortal for as long as you live."

Harry realised he was right but in that moment he refused to worry about it. That was something for later, so instead he said. "Then I will just have to break you. Mind and body. I will turn your immortality into a curse. If I can't kill you I will leave you begging for the sweet relief of death while I live a long and happy life."

Voldemort sneered at Harry, "Big words, but you forget where we stand. You will be nothing more than my new meat puppet. Forced to watch as I kill everyone you care about using your own hands. You are alone here and there is nobody who can help you. And there are two of me." The kid Voldemort started laughing and smiling as Voldemort tore down the barrier keeping it in the cot.

It was Harry's turn to laugh. "Two on one? Sorry but even together the two of you don't even make up a half. You're nothing but broken shards. And as to your assumption that I am alone, let's test that theory. Harry mentally called to his mother's magic and outside himself where Harry couldn't see, the green doe dissolved into a green mist and flowed back into Harry. Inside, the form of Harry's mother coalesced standing next to him.

"I see we have another uninvited guest. What's the plan son?" The shadow of Lily Potter asked.

"We kick him out. And see if we can make him take that thing with him." Harry said. And tossed his mother her wand, because he was still wearing everything he had been outside and that's when the spells started firing.

As always I run on comments and caffeine.

In the UK the term solicitor means a lawyer or attorney. Not a prostitute

I had meant for the fight inside Harry's head to be in this chapter but it took longer to get here than I anticipated. I don't want to cram it onto the end because I want to do the fight justice so next chapter.
