A/N: Thank you for the reviews, favorites, and follows. I appreciate the kind words that most of you have left. Constructive comments are always appreciated. One person said 'trash plot', which I'm sure is correct but really doesn't help me create a good plot. haha Also, this is not supposed to be super realistic. We are talking about a wizard who can influence people with a flick of a stick and his wife that can read minds in a medieval world... If it doesn't seem realistic, then just view it as a fun plot to take your mind off of how crappy our world is right now.
Please pay attention to the year markers at the top of each entry. These really show how time is flowing. Arya was born in 289 AC, in place of Bran who is now born in 287 AC. That's the price of the plot.
Chapter 3: I Prefer to be Feared
Year 3: Day 182
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
King's Landing smells like shite, looks like a cesspool, and is full of rats and snakes. This is a place I would rather not be… First, I spent at least an hour attempting to make my way to the Red Keep, but there were hundreds of commoners attempting to get a look at me or asking me to take them to Harrenhal. I finally told my guards to inform anyone that asked to meet us on the Kingsroad in three days. They could come along back to Harrenhal with us then. In truth, some of those people would be spies for any number of Lords. Since I secured the Riverlands a month ago, there are likely dozens of plots in the works at this very moment. Luckily, the Elixir of Life pumping through my veins prevent even the deadliest of poisons from killing me. Plus, I trust my guards implicitly, mostly due to their magical compulsions, but still...
Second, when the City Watch finally arrived to create a path for me to reach the Red Keep, they were rude and acted as if I was below their station. Ridiculous. At least in the Riverlands, our city watch treats you with respect no matter your station.
And lastly, I met Lord Peter Baelish. That man reeks of lies. Astoria and I had both decided to come on this journey and she told me that man was already thinking of schemes to ruin our family and kill us for destroying House Tully. And he is Master of Coin!
It was only me and Astoria as the 'Highborns' in this party, as both Neville and Susan had decided to stay home. Neville to run the region and Susan to take care of the children. However, I also brought fifty of my most loyal and skilled men at arms, those that I trust entirely.
We were greeted at the Gate to the Red Keep by a pump older man with white hair, elegant clothes, and a golden pin adorning his collar. I assumed that it was Lord Jon Arryn by his looks and that proved correct. Lord Arryn seemed to be a callous man who was unhappy with my arrival. He said several snide comments about reaching above my station and whatnot, but his opinion matters little. He did, however, seem extremely interested in my history and my family. He asked several dozen questions, mostly benign, but some more personal. Where did he grow up? Why was he named heir of Harrenhal? What does he plan with the Riverlands? Generally, things the Hand of the King should know but also things that he obviously wants for other reasons.
Quick update: House Bracken bent the knee after the extinction of House Mooton. They did; however, dislike being removed from their castle by Neville's force and the installation of House Blackwood of Stone Hedge placed there. Oh boy, had Lord Bracken let me know of his displeasure. I sent the men of House Bracken to the wall and the women were returned to whatever House they were as maidens with a note of apology.
Year 3: Day 183
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Last night was the swearing of oaths and the banquet. Astoria and I both attended and were surprised to see a multitude of other Lords there. It seemed that most of the Realm had sent someone to witness the ceremony. King Robert was perched on this monstrosity of a Throne. Made of melted swords, this Iron Throne was similar to nothing I had ever seen before. There were stairs to the actual seat, and it looked like it was a quick way to get tetanus.
Robert was skinner than I had imagined, but he still was a large man. It was a quick ceremony in my opinion; a simple oath and Robert's acceptance and it was over. Serve King Robert and his lawful heirs… Blah blah blah. Oaths can be broken. Then the feast begun. The servants brought in the tables and set them up in a simple manner while next they brought out the food. Predictably, it was tasty food. Definitely expensive.
Astoria and I sat next to the King, so we got a good understanding of him. He seemed as if he was present yet far away. I mentioned that I brought Astoria along due to her propensity for court politics, which is mostly due to her ability to read minds easily, but I didn't say that, and he responded that he did not care for the backstabbing that seemed to be all too common in the realm now. Astoria told me that deep in his mind, he thinks the Realm is worse off under his rule than it was under the Targaryens. Sad.
I then had to tell him about how I crushed House Mooton. It seemed that he was truly alive when speaking about war. He is a man of three loves: war, women, and drink. The battle was a long story as the King wished for every gory detail. At some point, Astoria decided to stop listening and speak with the Queen. A clever idea, to be sure.
My favorite interaction with the King was when he said, "Sad it had to be done. I led a rebellion once, got me Seven Kingdoms." He cracked a smile, "You led a rebellion against the Tullys, got you a Kingdom. House Mooton led a rebellion, got them the block. Luck, isn't it my boy?" I said that I believe in skill. He laughed a lot at that.
I also spoke with Lord Arryn at the banquet. I used a bit of magic on him to get him to relax and become a bit more friendly and willing to speak with me. He seems like an honest man who wishes the best for the Seven Kingdoms, which I find admirable. He never wanted to be Hand of the King, he told me. Wanted to just remain in the Vale, but when Robert asked, he couldn't say no. If not him, then Tywin Lannister or Eddard Stark.
Tywin Lannister would not be incompetent. He was Aerys Targaryen's Hand for many years, but Robert would have been a puppet for the Lannisters. A disaster for the Realm, Arryn said. Eddard Stark was a different matter altogether. Apparently, according to Lord Arryn, "Eddard is a good man. An honorable man. A foolish man with northern values. He would sooner be assassinated here than actually accomplish anything. He makes a great Warden of the North but would make a terrible hand of the King." I am unsure of his assessment. Northern values might be exactly what the Kingdoms need, but I agree he would be killed before he could make any meaningful change.
Lord Arryn then spoke of less important topics. Mostly we spoke about children, he had just had a boy named, Robin. Slightly sickly, but Lord Arryn loved him the same. My children are doing well, growing quickly I told him.
Year 3: Day 184
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
I had a most interesting interaction with Queen Cersei this morning. While I was exploring the Keep with Astoria, she came around the corner and crashed into me, falling onto the ground. She was obviously angry, as any highborn is when they are inconvenienced but a quick compulsion charm cleared her of her malice.
I then had an idea, Princess Myrcella was only a year or so older than James, perhaps I could arrange for her to be fostered at Harrenhal. One, to better our relationship with the Crown, and two to see if my son would be a good match. A light compulsion later and Myrcella would be fostered at Harrenhal when she turned eight. Definitely a boon for our House. Cersei is still a bitch.
Year 4: Day 159
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Susan approached me today about House Peverell's plans for the future. While we have conquered the Riverlands, mostly through cunning but conquered none the less, she was sure we should continue our power grab even higher.
While I agree with her, we don't have the power just yet. The Riverlands is in the worst spot to start a rebellion. Surrounding us is the Crownlands, the Vale, the North, the Westerlands, and the Reach. We would be crushed. No, we need allies first.
The Vale and the North are out. The Tully sisters control too much for us to make any alliances that way. The North is too far away to be any help anyway. The Westerlands in Tywin Lannister might be an option for my son to become King if he were to wed Princess Myrcella and then literally everyone else died. But that would require Robert, Cersei, Joffrey, and Tommen to all be dead. Then Stannis would likely try to name himself King while we could push Myrcella's claim. Not my ideal track…
The Reach is an easy option for an alliance, but there is no one who could marry in my family that is old enough for House Tyrell's daughter or sons. However, House Tarly has a son that could work. I'm not speaking of the oldest son. That fat boy won't make it far with his father. Lord Tarly is a martial man. His first son is weak. I would surmise that Dickon will become the Heir. Now, that gives me an opening. Lily is only two years younger than Dickon. It would work. All I would need to do is promise Lord Tarly Highgarden if he were to swear to me when the time came.
Dorne would support anyone not Robert Baratheon. It would be better if we would promise revenge, which I'm sure that can be arranged if I'm not allied with House Lannister.
The Iron Islands are a non-factor. They would quicker betray me if it meant they would be free to pirate once again. When I am King, I'll destroy their people. their culture, and their religion. Replace it with normal people.
Problem is that I need a catalyst. I cannot just start this myself. I think I may have to bide my time with this one…
Year 4: Day 220
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Managing a Kingdom is harder than I imagined. Each House has their own problems, and they are so needy. I am unsure how they got along with the Tullys. It always seemed like the Tullys didn't give a shite about anything outside Riverrun. Ignoring problems like the Bracken-Blackwood feud, but that benefitted me, so I guess it works out.
I have conferred Riverrun onto House Longbottom by necessity, it had no Lord and I'm not willing to just give it to a family. Thus, Neville is now Lord. Neville has replaced all of the key players with loyalists, but he always feels there is a dagger behind every corner, thus Susan and their children spend most of their time at Harrenhal. I feel that I may remove Neville from that position eventually. When I speak with him, I get the feeling that he isn't truly happy. Maybe a Riverlander family that proves loyal enough will allow me to bring Neville back to Harrenhal permanently. Even if I succeed in seizing the Iron Throne for House Peverell, I can't imagine placing Neville as Lord Paramount anywhere. He would command no loyalty and would quickly be killed by other Lords. If I were to say, make him Lord Paramount of the Reach, the Hightowers, Tarlys, and pretty much every other family has a reason to kill him. Pass.
Another duty of mine is presenting myself at tournaments throughout the realm. Thus, here I am at Highgarden, alone. I hate tourneys. Useless shows of fighting prowess that benefit nobody but your enemies. That's why I would have never participated in the Wand Dueling on Earth, I was great with a wand, but it helps if people underestimate you.
I did have a curious conversation with Lady Olenna Tyrell yesterday. I was obviously looking bored, and she snuck up and sat beside me, asking if I was planning on forcing the glass of ale Lord Tarly had next to him to fall onto the Lord. In truth, I had thought about it. It was on the edge and could easily fall with a wave of my hand, but I was waiting to see if it would do it on its own.
Anyway, she had asked what I was doing in Highgarden alone. I informed her that the Riverlands care about the happenings in the Realm, which was true in some ways. She responded in a way I thought not possible from 'Highborns' in this land: "Lord Peverell, anywhere House Peverell banners are, there is always an ulterior motive. Lord Longbottom graced Jon Arryn with his presence a few moons ago with the official reason being Riverrun/Vale relations, however I was told that Longbottom was asking about raising a castle on the Goldroad on the crossing of the Blackwater Rush. Something that would negatively affect the Westerlands and the Reach… Which I am sure you told him to do… I just need to figure out you secret mission."
Why is it that everyone in this godforsaken land has a spy network? I am going to make sure that if I send a magical person to do anything, they put a silencing spell up… But she wasn't wrong, I did have another reason to be in Highgarden. Lord Tarly.
Lord Tarly was the only commander to defeat King Robert in his rebellion and for my plan to seize the iron Throne I need his support. I introduced myself to him and spoke of his sons. I was correct in my thought that he does not have a high opinion of his first son, Samwell. When I suggested a marriage, Lord Tarly immediately suggested his younger son. I said that I would not marry a daughter to a younger son, and he replied that Dickon will be the heir. I told him we will be in touch which seemed to excite him. I did not mention my plans just yet, but he will come around, with a compulsion charm or not. That was my secret mission, Lady Tyrell…
Year 5: Day 25
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Susan approached me this morning with a slight problem with my plan to wed James to Princess Myrcella. She has heard from a spy in the Red Keep that Cersei and her twin brother 'do the dirty' in private. There have also been rumors that the Baratheon's are actually children born of Cersei and Jaime, which would not do… Fuck me.
I cannot risk that child losing her royal status if I am to hoist my family onto the Throne. Perhaps Arya Stark is the way to go… I may have to swallow some humble pie and travel to Winterfell to speak with Lord Stark. Shite. Why could that whore Queen not just fuck the King and give him true heirs? Would make my life so much easier.
Year 5: Day 36 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
I had Astoria send Lord Stark a message asking if we could visit to try to mend things with Catelyn… I had her inform them that we discovered Lord Edmure's bones on the Kingsroad a few weeks ago. In reality, he died in the dungeons but what Lady Stark doesn't know won't hurt her. I also sent another message to Lysa and Catelyn letting them know that we will be performing the traditional Tully funeral for Edmure and that we would wait for them if they wanted to come:
"Lady Stark – I am truly sorry to bring you this news, but while on patrol, a group of Harrenhal soldiers discovered your brother's remains. I won't go into details, but we are sure they are your brother's remains. I have ordered they be taken to Riverrun, to his home, for his final burial. I understand the Tullys usually send their dead off in a boat and light it on fire, so I will wait until you arrive to hold the funeral. If you choose not to come, please let me know as soon as possible. – Harry Peverell
I sent the same raven to Lysa Arryn. Lysa responded in a weird way. Almost paranoid. I feel that it might be best to avoid any marriages with Robin Arryn for a while. See how that situation shakes out. Catelyn responded much kinder than the last time I received a raven:
"Lord Peverell – Thank you for finding my brother. It brings closure to me to know that you found him on the Kingsroad. I will be in attendance for the funeral. It will take a few weeks for me to arrive, so I thank you for waiting. – Catelyn Stark"
I'm glad she is coming. Perhaps we can smooth things over. Perhaps not.
Year 5: Day 69 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Hehe sixty-nine. I purposely didn't write in my journal yesterday to put that joke in there.
Lady Stark arrived three days ago for the funeral of her brother. It was a somber affair. She brought her two daughters with her, Sansa (9) and Arya (5). James seemed to get along with Arya the best, although he is about the same age as her (4). Sansa seemed to think he was cute. Arya appears to be an outdoorsy child who excels at things that boys are generally good at. I saw her watching several of my guards spar and she seemed to be interested. She also shunned the septa lessons her mother attempted to force her to go to with her sister.
Neville and I apologized to Lady Stark for our actions to secure power. That conversation was awkward to say the least. She still seemed angry with us for usurping House Tully when her brother had been killed, but I believe that she now understands we prevented a power vacuum in the Riverlands. I doubt Catelyn will ever be okay with what happened, but time will heal most wounds.
Astoria and Catelyn also got along fairly well. Astoria has that ability to melt any heart and she definitely used it on Catelyn. They spoke of children and other motherly items that Neville and I excused ourselves for. We took our kids outside and showed how Arya how to shoot a bow. It was an entertaining day. Until I touched her on the shoulder.
It was a quick spark between us when I touched Arya. I don't believe she felt it, but I did. A magical spark. I had heard stories that the Starks wielded magic in the past. I didn't put too much stock in those stories. Man is amazing at warping history as time goes on. But, when I touched her to show her how to better hold the child's bow, it was there.
Now, in order to know if Arya actually had magic rather than drop her from a window like Neville's great-uncle had done to him, I needed to touch her on the belly for a few moments. Thus, that is why I picked her up when I brought her back to her mother. She seemed to struggle for a moment but accepted her fate. It was a quick walk, but I felt something stirring in her as I pushed my magic into her. I know not how most magic theory works, but it could see in her eyes that she understood what was happening. It only took a moment for the magic, so buried inside of her was awakened and she would become a witch. A powerful one at that. I could feel it.
So, when I spoke to Lady Stark again, a quick Imperious Curse ensured that she would send her youngest daughter to Harrenhal for fostering when Arya turned eight.
Oh, and the crossing castle of the Blackwater Rush was completed finally. I named Allex of House Caster as the Lord. He was one of the most loyal men-at-arms at Harrenhal and he deserved it. Plus, he can patrol that area better than me now.
As time goes on and I learn more about this world, I find increasingly interesting tidbits of knowledge. Valyrian Steel, something I heard about most recently, is something similar to goblin steel. Generally, they are swords or armor made entirely from magical metal that was created in a Kingdom known as the Valyrian Freehold. This is the place where the dragon riders like the Targaryens came from.
I understand that it is extremely rare and valuable, but I find myself not interested in acquiring any for myself. For James or Charlus maybe, but I don't know how to wield a sword. I don't need armor. If I am ever in a battle, a quick shield charm will protect me from any projectiles, and I am not going to engage in one-on-one combat. I am a Wizard not some lowly Knight. Fuck. That. Shit.
Now, something that does intrigue me about the Valyrian Freehold was their magic. Almost all of it is lost to history, but perhaps, if I was to visit the ruins, I may find the power to unlock the ability to control a dragon for myself. Maybe a ritual? I feel like that is the most likely explanation for the bloodline traits. I don't know, but I know that dragons couldn't be tamed in my world, and they can here.
Lord Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell and the North
I had the most interesting conversation with Catelyn when she returned home from Riverrun. While she seemed much more at peace, there was something off. Now, I know not what has changed and Catelyn assures me that she just changed her mind, but she approached me about fostering Arya at Harrenhal. Catelyn has been adamant that no child of ours would be fostered anywhere, yet she says that our second daughter should now be fostered in Harrenhal? Not Sansa?
I feel there is something more sinister going on here but I have no proof. Catelyn just continued to be... off. Ever so slightly different. She hasn't even uttered an insult on House Peverell in several weeks.
She also suggested we send Jon to Harrenhal. Apparently, there are lots of opportunities for bastards there and House Peverell only sees work ethic. However, with Jon's lineage, it would be like sending a sheep into the wolves' den. If Lord Peverell found out his true ties, I shutter to see his actions. However, I could also see the Riverlord not caring. Lord Peverell is an opportunist, not a revolutionary. At least, I hope not.
I do not trust Lord Peverell in the slightest. He may be a good Lord, but there is something dark about him. Putting House Mooton to the sword was unnecessary and sending House Bracken to the wall was harsh. They could have bent the knee... But that was his decision. I am going to invite his family here to find out what is going on.
Year 5: Day 89 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Ruins of Valyria
I used a portkey to get here. But since I had no reference to create the destination, I decided to create the destination as 20,000 feet above sea level above the Dothraki Sea and just take my broom with me. A quick bubblehead charm before I felt and boom, Essos. It really didn't take very long to get from the Dothraki Sea to Valyria on my Firebolt III and I dipped down to breathable air fairly quickly, so I didn't need the charm for very long.
It's foggy in Valyria I have discovered. I don't think anyone has been to Valyria in a long time based on the books I read about it. It appeared to me that I would be dodging lava and crumbling debris, but alas, no lava so far. To be honest, the Freehold is in remarkable condition for being abandoned. I believe that it is similar to Pompeii so far, with ash just covering most things. I have been using my magic to uncover things hidden in the ash.
It has been astounding to see the bones of hundreds of dragons and citizens littering the ground. It appears to me that the accounts of the Doom of Valyria are correct, and volcanos destroyed it. The question for academics is now, what is happening with those that are living here? I have stumbled upon several 'people' who still inhabit the ruins. More like zombies. Their skin is crusted and scaley, their eyes burn of hatred and, looking into their minds, I see nothing but hunger. However, they still die like people. Fire or the killing curse seems to work. I have been using fire mostly though. Obviously, there is something not right that is affecting these people. While the Elixir of Life should protect me, I have continued my use of the bubblehead charm as well as using charmed clothing which does not allow my skin to touch the air here. I will take back some of the air and experiment on it, to see if it is connected to this plague.
Using magic to clear off the ash from the ruins has given me access to a treasure trove of Valyrian steel weapons and armors. The weapons are unlike anything I have ever seen, dark grey and seem to contain magic unlike anything I have seen before. I am lucky I brought an expandable trunk to carry all of this loot. Every building I enter seems to have at least two swords and a suit of full plate armor. Additionally, I have found several sets of full plate armor for dragons themselves. Each larger than the last. I have stored them in my trunk as well. In total, after searching only a small fraction of the City of Valyria, I have found one hundred and sixty-two Valyria steel swords, thirty-one sets of full plate armor, and eight sets of dragon armor of assorted sizes. I have a feeling this haul is worth tens of millions of gold dragons; however, the most impressive find was a single black dragon egg with red veins running throughout the shell.
I found it in a case in one of the fairly large manors I explored. It was protected by some sort of magical ward; however, a quick spell and the ward was broken. I could feel the dragon inside, longing to escape. I put it in a time-charmed box in the trunk to prevent the egg from hatching before I have discovered Valyria's secrets.
Year 5: Day 94 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Ruins of Valyria
As I explore, I find that the Valyrians really had a rudimentary form of magic. A forceful, intent-based sort where they just pushed magic into whatever they wanted and told their magic what to do. Brutish, but effective it seems. Blood magic is also rife in this land as well as dark magic rituals. I breath it in and feel energized. The rituals and blood magic are the most advanced parts of magic for a society of such low control over said magic.
I entered one of the larger buildings in the city and discovered it was some sort of public library. Though I do not understand the writings, the building is in a remarkable state. I'm sure most of the books would yield all sorts of forgotten knowledge, but I discovered a hidden area guarded by statues of dragons and several gates and wards. I easily cracked the wards and opened the gates to find even more books, but my god, the magic was heavy. These books were the most treasured books in the Freehold and I stole all of them. Seemingly hundreds of books I dumped into my expanded trunk. When I get back to Harrenhal, I will translate them with the simple translate charm, but I have a feeling I have discovered all the secrets of the Freehold and they are all mine.
I also discovered a map of the Freehold before the doom which revealed two cities to me, Oros and Tyria. I will be travelling there after I complete my total exploration of the city.
Year 5: Day 96 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
Ruins of Tyria
Throughout my journey in Old Valyria, I probably have destroyed a thousand of those zombie people. I am unsure where they come from or if they are the original dragonlords, but they proved to be no big hurdle to jump while exploring.
In total, I found three hundred and twenty-seven Valyrian Steel swords, fifty-two full plate suits, twenty light armor sets (most likely for riding dragons), and eleven sets of dragon armor as well as hundreds of books. But alas, I only discovered the one dragon egg. Hedwig the Dragon. Not very intimidating, but a nice homage to her sacrifice.
The gold and jewels I have also taken is astronomical as well. Enough to fill hundreds of un-charmed trunks. I can fuel the Riverlands for hundreds of years now and even the Iron Throne. However, my plans for all this newfound wealth in materials and wealth is… Nothing. I will give Neville and Susan a couple swords for their boys and a plate armor set. I will give each of my two boys a sword as well as a plate armor set, but other than that, my plans are to dig out the catacombs of Harrenhal and create the most secure vault in the World. I will have an armory to equip a small force and hide it away. There is no reason to give these weapons or armor to anyone. All I would be doing is equipping my enemy.
I am returning home in the next few days. Tyria and Oros have not produced very much in the way of artifacts or books, just gold and jewels. I will leave Valyria plundered.
Year 5: Day 120 – 294 AC
Lord Harry Peverell, Lord of Harrenhal and the Trident
I will be leaving for Winterfell in a few days, but I have finally finished the construction of my vault under Harrenhal. I used the current catacombs and hollowed out a few additional areas, but now I have placed all of the swords on racks down there as well as the armor sets. It looks like a massive armory now, but I guess I'm just the average Skyrim player, hoarding everything of value and never doing anything with it.
The books I secured in my library in the castle, warded so only someone of my blood can remove them from the shelves. I have begun translating them, but it is slow work due to having to use the spell on each page individually rather than on the whole book.
I showed Neville the armory and he was shocked. He said it was crazy how many swords the Valyrians actually had. I gave him his swords and armor and he was thankful. I also showed him the egg and the books, and he agreed that once I return from the North, we should try to find the way to hatch the egg and control it. I'm sure that the Valyrians were able to create a familiar type of relationship with them or maybe a blood connection. I will find out. A dragon in House Peverell… The power. The fear… I can taste it.
A/N: I imagine Valyria would be the end all be all of loot chests. I mean, supposedly nobody has been there in hundreds of years and basically time just stopped for them, leaving all of their riches there. I have also taken into account how all that wealth would destroy the economy of Westeros and flood the market, thus Harry will barely touch it. It's like I said, he's being a basic Skyrim player. Hahaha
