"Come on sis," the pilot let out as he drove the helicopter over Manhattan. "How long are we gonna keep doing this?"
The pilot's sister, Elisa Maza, got out of her binoculars as she answered. "Until I can get something on I can use. Xanatos always spots the tail when I do this by car." She looked down at the only black limousine that she and her brother were following closely.
"You know, you're really obsessed with this guy." Her brother retorted. "He did his time, why not just let him be?"
"Because Derek I know he's dirty." Elisa answered as she looked through the binoculars.
"You're getting spirit messages?"
"Call it cop instinct."
"Hey," Derek narrowed his eyes. "You're not the only cop up here. We get a real call, this is over."
Over at the clock tower, Lexington was having the time of his life playing this new helicopter game Elisa given to the clan. So far, only three particular gargoyles enjoyed the game, but they were having a hard time sharing.
"Come on, give it up." Brooklyn grumbled. "It's my turn."
"Just hang on a sec." Lexington mumbled; his eyes still glued to the screen.
"You've been hogging that thing since we woke up."
"That's because I'm the only one who knows how to use it."
"Wow Lex," the two turned to the back, and saw Chelsea coming to them with a book under her arm. "That's not what I heard last week." She teased, recalling that Lexington had a hard time getting used to the video game console.
"Things change Chels." Lexington countered with narrowed look.
Chelsea pouted, annoyed that the small gargoyle said her annoying nickname, but didn't want to pick a fight. She walked away to continue reading her book in peace.
"Why do you want to learn how to fly a helicopter?" Broadway came over, eating a large sandwich. "You got wings."
"You wouldn't understand." Lexington replied.
Broadway chomped down a big piece of his sandwich. A look of annoyance plastered all over his face. "Oh yeah, I'm just a big dumb gargoyle with his brains in his stomach."
"I couldn't have said it better." Brooklyn jeered.
"That's enough!" The four young gargoyles turned to Goliath, who came over to them with somewhat enraged look. "You're warriors and rookery siblings. Elisa did not give you this game so you could fight over it like children."
"Sorry," Broadway started with a look of worry. "Guess I'm a little worried about Elisa. If cops were meant to fly, they'd have wings."
"From what I've heard, her brother Derek is a great pilot," Chelsea turned to the potbelly with a reassuring smile. "So she's in good hands."
"I guess…" Broadway shrugged, still looking worried and unsure. Ever since the gun incident, the potbelly had been a bit concerned for his human friend when she is in a dangerous investigation. Since he was the one to almost kill her, he was always worried for her safety. Always…
Down in the limousine the Maza's were following, Xanatos was fixing his tie of his nice tuxedo.
"Are they up still up there?" the man asked his driver Owen.
Owen looked through his mirror and saw the helicopter. "It would appear so sir." He replied.
"Alright." He then put on a smirk. "Let's go shopping."
The limousine turned in a building, and on the sign read The Manhattan Diamond Exchange.
In the diamond exchange, men and women were dressed in either there finest suits or dresses, drinking champagne, and doing some small talk amongst one another. In this particular crowd, there were two hidden predators blending in the crowd of prey.
Jackal and Hyena, two out of three members of the Pack who were not arrested were dressed in their finest outfits. Jackal wearing a nice suit with the Pack's logo on his necktie, and Hyena wearing a sexy knee length red dress. Both looked like they were looking for something, but one member was having a hard time with her dress.
"I can't believe I was dragged into this," Hyena hissed picking at her dress. "I feel like one of those manikins on a window display."
"You're lucky this is only for one night sis." Her brother hissed back. "But our night is almost up." He gestured to a displayed that showed a huge diamond.
"Yes. The Coyote Diamond." She said with lust, seeing the large diamond in the center of the room.
They both came over to the diamond. They were ordered by Fox to steal the largest diamond at the exchange, and that's what they're going to do. They looked into the case, examining the diamond with great intent.
"Fox said this beauty is the most valuable one here." Jackal whispered.
"What's to stop us from grabbing it and shooting our way free?" Hyena asked.
"Style, dear sister. Style. That, and I don't want to join Fox and Wolf in prison. So please, try to restrain your bloodlust."
Hyena huffed. "I should have gone with Dingo to Europe. He knew how to have fun." She then made a smirk and used her heel to stab into her brother's leg. He gritted his teeth but didn't make a sound as he glared at his sister.
"You're lucky we're related." He hissed.
Hyena gave a snicker, then the two went to work. While Hyena was making sure no one noticed what they're doing, Jackal went to find a way to get the gem out without an alarm. Unfortunately, a worker used a card to open the case, and took out the diamond with the cloth.
"Excuse me," Jackal called, forcing a fake smile. "I was looking at that."
"I'm sorry," the attendant told him in a smile. "But it's just been purchased."
Hyena was about to explode if not for her brother grabbing her shoulders. "By whom may I ask?" Jackal inquired.
"Why Mr. Xanatos, of course."
The siblings looked over to see Xanatos standing near a large window standing in the center of a large group of people. The attendant brought him the diamond, and the man took it with a somewhat predatory gleam in his eyes.
"This should look nice next to the Star Of Arabia." He mused.
That made Hyena grit her teeth. "Why that pompous twit, he can't do that!" she hissed and stomped forward, only for Jackal to grab her arm. She turned to her brother with a glare, but it falters when she saw how angry her brother was too at Xanatos.
"Temper," he said in a sinister smirk. "It just means we'll have to steal it from him instead."
Knowing what he meant, the siblings stalked forward with predator gleam in their eyes, only to be stopped by an…adoring fan.
"Excuse me!" the fan asked in an excited tone. "Weren't you on that TV show The Pack?"
Hyena turned to the adoring fan with her signature smirk. "Why yes. Would you like an autograph?" Instead of an autograph, she pulled out a knife out of nowhere. "How about I write it across your face!"
Hyena cut through the man's bowtie, missing his face by mere centimeters. Everyone in the room exclaimed at the sudden turn of events. Jackal smirked a similar way of his sisters.
"Well, so much for bloodlust," he shrugged. "Might as well get in on the fun."
Jackal leapt in the air, somersaulting across the room landing a perfect landing behind Xanatos, and made a roundhouse kick in the back of the millionaire's head. When the man fell down, Jackal caught the Coyote Diamond in his hands, then tossed it into the waiting hands of his sister. Hyena stared down at the diamond with an icy grin, then rolled the diamond in her fist.
"Time to go sis." Jackal called through his teeth, seeing people crowding.
Hyena turned to him with a glare. "I don't take orders brother. Not even from you."
"Let's go!" he growled.
Both siblings turned tail, somersaulting toward the elevator. When Jackal entered, Hyena pressed the elevator button. The diamond in her one hand and her knife in the other. As the doors closed behind them, Xanatos stood and rubbed the back of his head.
"Call the police Owen." He ordered.
"Brilliant," Jackal grumbled as he and Hyena ran up the circular staircase. "Now the whole city will be looking for us."
"Quit your whining," Hyena scoffed as she kicked down the door that lead to the roof. "We planned for something like this."
Both siblings turned left, and against the wall laid two folded hang gliders. They laid them against the wall and quickly set them up to make their getaway. As they got their gliders ready, they quickly made their getaway to the air, but it was cut short when a bright flash spotlighted them. The sound of helicopter rotors filled their ears as the makeshift wind made them step back.
"This is the police," announced Derek through the intercom. "Stay where you are."
Jackal and Hyena grunted as their gliders were slowing them down. Quick thinking, they abandoned their gliders, and made a run for it.
"I don't think so." Jackal took out a hidden gun in his jacket. Just before he was to shoot, he was tackled down by some someone, and that shot hit the tail rotor.
Derek grunted as he tried to take control of helicopter. Moving the control stick, he was able to get the copter to land in time on the rooftop.
Jackal turned and glared as it was Xanatos who tackled him. "You just made your last mistake rich man." Jackal sneered as he and his sister surrounded him. Their knives aimed at the millionaire.
Suddenly the click of a gun was heard behind them. "Hold it!" They turned behind and saw Elisa out of the helicopter aiming her gun at them.
"Drop the knives and hit the deck," Elisa ordered. "Do it now!"
Hyena and Jackal shared a look. Both silently asking each other if they should surrender? Their actions though said the exact opposite. Quickly grabbing there gliders and made a quick escape out through the city's skies. Elisa ran to the edge to catch glimpse of where the duo went, but they disappeared before she could think.
"Never a gargoyle around when you need one." Elisa turned with a glare at the millionaire. Xanatos found his Coyote Diamond by his feet, picked it up, and put it in his inner jacket pocket. He came over to Derek, who was inspecting the rotors.
"I saw you land that rig without the rear rotor," Xanatos complimented. "That was impressive." He held out his hand to the other cop.
Derek was shocked at this compliment. He shook his head as he itches his head. "Yeah well, I didn't have a lot of choice." He shakes Xanatos's hand.
"I wonder if you be interested in a job with my company. I need someone as a pilot and bodyguard."
Elisa froze at what Xanatos was saying. Is he offering her brother…a job?! With him?! As much as her calm physique was present, her inner self was screaming with shock and anger at the man.
"I can guarantee," Xanatos continued, his arm slung over Derek's shoulders. "the job will be less risky than police work, and I can probably pay better too…much better."
Derek seemed he was unsure of the huge offer. He tried to pull out a few words to answer, but Xanatos offered him a card.
"Think about it. It was nice meeting you." The millionaire to the female detective who kept her frown and hands on her hips. "Detective, always a pleasure." When she didn't answer, Xanatos left the two siblings as he exited the roof.
When he was gone, Elisa walked forward to her brother. "Ignore him Derek he's just using you to annoy me." She went to take the business card, but her brother held it back and hid behind his back.
"Oh right, it couldn't possibly be that he actually thought I was good?" Derek asked with a bitter tone.
Elisa raised an eyebrow. "You aren't saying that you're possibly considering?" she joked.
"Hey, why don't you use your cop instinct to figure it out." Derek brushed past her as he left his sister looking at him with concern.
In one of the Pack's warehouses, while Jackal was on the phone in the corner, Hyena was vigorously kicking down a punching bag with great might.
"Oh once I get my claws on Xanatos," Hyena grunted, she punched the bag with sheer force. "He's going to be shredded into the pieces. Just because he took the-"
"New orders from Fox." Jackal cut her off.
His sister growled. "I don't want to hear it." She punched another hole the bag.
Jackal smirked. "Oh yes you do, she says we get to waste Xanatos for interfering." He said the last part with his finger running over his throat.
Hyena stopped punching as she processed what her brother was saying. She let out a smirk which turned into a chilling cackle that resembled her namesake.
Arriving at the clocktower, which read midnight, Elisa was surrounded by the clan. All of them listening intently of what happened tonight.
"He can't work for Xanatos!" she spoke with a distraught presence. "What am I going to do?!"
"Tell him the truth." Was only Goliath's answered.
"The truth?" she turned to him. "The whole truth? Including about gargoyles living in New York." She shook her head. "That's not my secret to tell."
"It shouldn't have to be," Broadway took a step forward. "He should trust you."
"Trust doesn't mean a lot without honesty." Brooklyn added shaking his head between Lexington and Chelsea.
"But since he's your family, he would have to listen." Chelsea added.
"Excuse me," everyone turned to Lexington who was cross. "But aren't we missing the point here. Jackal and Hyena are loose in the city, we should be tracking them down."
Goliath looked at Lexington, then down at Elisa. "Derek is your brother Elisa, tell him the truth, show us to him if necessary. He must be made to believe."
Elisa looked up at Goliath with an unsure look. Even with his words of wisdom, she was just worried for the outcome of how Derek is going to react.
At the end of her shift, the sun was rising, and she decided to look for her brother. She found him in the assembly room looking out the window.
"Captain Chavez told me I would find you here." She whispered. When her brother didn't turn to her, she continued. "Listen Derek, there's something you've should know."
"There's something you should know too." Derek interrupted, turning to face her. His face clearly serious as he answered. "I've decided to take Xanatos' offer."
From that moment, Elisa thought her world stopped an instant.
During the day, Elisa couldn't sleep.
Hearing Derek telling her he's quitting made her gears turn as she was under the covers. She didn't know what to do to make her brother change his mind about the millionaire. There was only one person who would understand her situation because she followed his footsteps in becoming a detective. When she got up around 6:30, she made the call to the one person who would listen.
Her father, Peter Maza.
She told him to meet her at a local bar that was located near the precinct, in which he agreed. Inside, they were sitting at the center, having conversation, and discussing about the whole Derek issue. While her father orders a scotch on the rocks, Elisa order hot tea.
"Can you believe it? He's quitting the force." Elisa started with a stressed expression.
Her father sighed. "I hate to see it happen. Derek's a good cop."
"I just got to make him see Xanatos is bad news. Whatever he's got planned for Derek, I know it isn't good."
"You can convince him Elisa. You're his big sister, he's always looked up to you." Peter picked up his glass then took a swig of his hard drink. The contents tingling as it went down in his throat.
Elisa breathed hard picking up a bread stick in the center. "I've tried to tell him, but he can be so…" she broke the breadstick in half. "stubborn."
Peter pointed at her as he urged. "You have to get through to him. Tell him, it will just kill his mother if he leaves the family business."
Even though his words lingered in her head, Elisa sighed as she took her tea. As she sipped, the contents didn't make her mind rest, but only urge her more to his demand.
Over at another part of the city, Derek couldn't stop thinking at what he'd done. What he said to his sister, it sounded like he made his decision final, but inside he still had his doubts. Whether it's the right call or not, he wanted to talk to someone about it. He knew his father would make him go against the idea like his sister, so he decided to go to someone else.
"Of course you should quit if that's what you really want to do." His mother, Diane, encouraged.
Both of them were in the living room, discussing the matter over tea. Derek's head was low as she said her answer, still doubtful.
"I know dad and Elisa want me to stay on the force," Derek stated with doubt. He turned to her. "But it's just not what I want."
His mother laid a hand on his bicep. "Honey, if you aren't happy then maybe it's time for a change. This job with Xanatos sound like a wonderful opportunity."
"It could be a start of a whole new career for me." he added, with a little confidence in his voice.
"Then go for it Derek," Diane urged. "Honey it's your life. Elisa and dad aren't in charge of it. You are."
Derek nodded. He went down to take his tea then took a sip. As he swallowed, the contents soothed around his mouth in what he decided made his mind at peace.
After resigning to the chief, Derek was cleaning out his locker. His mind was already made up as he decided to work with Mr. Xanatos. So far, Elisa didn't come to tell him more bad things about Xanatos. For a second, he felt relieved until the door slammed open.
"Close your eyes boys! I've got business here."
Derek groaned. "Oh great…"
All the men were flustered as they hid themselves behind their lockers. Elisa came in, not even phased that they weren't even dressed.
"Hey detective," Officer Morgan implied. "How about some privacy huh?"
"In a minute," Elisa brushed past him. She stopped in front of Derek who continued to empty his locker. "Listen Derek, it wasn't just cop instinct. Come with me and I'll prove it." She tried to turn his shoulder, but Derek shook it off.
"Ah uh sis," he shook his head. "I have no doubt you can find a snitch to tell me how Xanatos is the prince of darkness."
"He practically is!"
"Xanatos saved both our lives the other night," he slammed his locker shut. "He deserves a chance to prove himself, and I deserve a chance to do what I want with my life." With that, Derek left in a huff with a few men all dressed.
Elisa narrowed her eyes, not even fazed a few were still a hiding behind their locker doors.
When Elisa returned the clock tower, she explained to Goliath and Hudson about what happened. While they were talking, Brooklyn Broadway and Chelsea were watching Lexington fixing the TV.
"I just can't talk sense into him," Elisa explained. "He can't see that Xanatos is up to something."
"Is there anything we can do to help?" Goliath asked.
"I'm glad you asked if you could keep an eye on Derek? For his own good."
Goliath turned behind. "You four," the four gargoyles looked up as there leader stepped forward. "Station yourselves near the castle and watch for any signs of trouble," he turned his back for a second, then turned his head behind. "And please, try to get along."
Sometime later, the trio and Chelsea sat on a rooftop that had a good eye at the castle in the clouds. So far, nothing was happening, which was good. The bad though was one question…Did they left?
"It's quiet," Chelsea thought out loud leaning her back against the stone railing next to Brooklyn. She saw that the red gargoyle was watching the castle with great intent, not sure whether he heard her or not. She shrugged as she looked back up at the castle. "Guess he didn't hear." she whispered.
"I heard."
Chelsea's jumped as her back straightened and her wings flexed quickly. She turned to him and saw his eyes staring at her. His beak cracking a smirk. The female gargoyle blushed as she turned away chuckling.
"I can't see how we're doing any good here," Chelsea looked up and saw Lexington in the center complaining as usual. He turned to Broadway pumping up his fist. "We should be out looking for Jackal and Hyena."
"Oh give it a rest," Broadway said, annoyed at his rookery brother's complaints. "It's more important that we help Elisa."
"You wouldn't know what's important if it bit you two on the-"
"Guys, do you really have to fight? Now of all times?" Chelsea moaned while crossing her arms.
"Yes!" both siblings answered somewhat enraged, making the female take a lean back.
"Hey!" All three turned to Brooklyn who head was turned to his rookery brothers with a glare. "Knock it off you two! Look."
All three followed Brooklyn's head as they saw movement. Up at the castle, Xanatos' helicopter was rising in the air, then took off forward. The four looked and saw the copter flying left into the distance. Suddenly a gush of wind flew over them, then they saw another one flying toward Xanatos chopper. A dark gray copter, the logo of a cat could only belong to The Pack, and it was following Xanatos' close.
When Brooklyn saw the gray copter firing lasers at the other, the hothead turned to the others. "Let's go!" He jumped off the rooftop first, followed closely by the others, then they all separated in formation.
Up in Xanatos' helicopter, Derek maneuvered away by the Pack's lasers and tried to speed forward. Soon the other copter took chase. Looking behind, Derek saw the other copter speeding forward firing lasers at them, carelessly hitting building filled with casualties.
Inside the Pack's helicopter, Jackal was flying the aircraft while Hyena took control of the ammo. When Jackal was in perfect eye view, Hyena took the control's and aimed at the other copter.
"Try dodging this!" Hyena cackled as she pressed her thumb to a button.
What came out the bottom was a large missile, which shot through the air toward Xanatos and Derek. When the missile was close, it exploded in midair, making Derek lose control spinning in the air.
"Hang on!" Derek ordered as he tried to control the copter. As he tried to maneuver in the air, Xanatos turned to him.
"Get the copter under control," he looked behind a case where his gun is. "I'll deal with our friends."
Making a sharp left, the Pack followed closely. Opening his door, Xanatos aimed his laser gun and fired at the other copter. As it hit, it only reflected off the windows, much to the twin's utter glee.
"Rich man," Hyena maneuvered her stick, the screen showing perfect aim at their target. "Dead man."
Before she could fire, a sudden jolt made her grunt, in which the copter sharply banked left, and the laser missed. Hyena gritted her teeth, then suddenly turned left, and saw two bright eyes glaring at her.
"Boo!" Broadway snarled, then shattered the glass into a thousand pieces. He took Hyena in his claws and threw her out the helicopter in a quick reflex. Her screams echoed, and at the end she opened her parachute.
Jackal gasped, seeing his sister's parachute slowly falling to a rooftop. He was somewhat relieved she was safe.
Over at Xanatos' copter, Derek maneuvered to see what was going on at the other copter. He squinted his eyes to see movement around it.
"Something's attacking them." He realized.
"Let's take our advantage and get out of here!" Xanatos advised, and his pilot maneuvered away from the scene.
Back over, Chelsea flew over followed closely by Brooklyn. As she landed first, she tapped Jackal on his left shoulder. He turned to her with a gasp.
"Hi Jackal, how's your night?" she asked in a casual smile. Jackal just stared at her dumbstruck. She shook her head. "Not good? Well here's something to brighten it up." She pointed forward. "Look behind you."
Jackal did so, only to see Brooklyn's face snarling and showing his fangs. He gasped as he took out his gun, only for Lexington to crush it in his claws and tossing Jackal away. Like his sister, he also activated his parachute, and successfully landed on the same rooftop as his sister. Both siblings glared at Xanato's helicopter flying away, while they saw their own being hijacked by four gargoyles. Lexington crawled into the pilot seat while Broadway Chelsea and Brooklyn were behind him.
"You sure you can fly this?" Broadway asked over the wind.
"Hey, it's just like the simulator game back at the tower." Lexington answered as he grabbed the controller.
"We're doomed." Chelsea added with dread.
"Famous last words." Brooklyn muttered.
Lexington moved the stick in a few directions, which made the helicopter follow his every need. When he motioned it down, they all screamed for dear life as the copter made dramatic aerobatics. Lefts, rights, ups, and downs. Even directions they never knew could happen.
"Maybe not quite the same…" Lexington said with admittance.
Everyone dug their claws into the helicopter as it made a spinning nosedive toward the city below.
"Uh, I think I'm gonna be sick!" Chelsea gagged as she squeezed hard in the middle.
"I thought you said you can fly this thing!" Brooklyn yelled at his brother.
"You think you can do better now's the time!" retorted Lexington as he looked down.
Broadway blinked. "Feel the air currents, use them, just like you do with your wings."
"Yeah, use the force Lex!" Brooklyn added with sarcasm.
Lexington was terrified, but knew he was the only one who could save him and his siblings. With a hard grunt, he pulled the joystick toward him with great muscle. In doing that, he managed to pull the copter up seconds before it hit the street. Jerking the stick left to right made him avoid passing cars, and narrowly avoiding a large truck. In making a sharp right, they narrowly avoided people running for their lives and ducking for cover. Lexington soon turned to a trash strewn alley, where it began bouncing up and down like a skipping down, sending the four passengers grunting up and down. Soon, one of the rotors hit the wall, making it skid to the ground with sparks flying behind it.
When it hit the wall, three gargoyles got thrown out. Brooklyn landed first, rubbing his head in pain. Next was Broadway, who landed right on top of him with sheer force.
"Smooth…real smooth…" Brooklyn grumbled, looking up with a small glare.
Lexington groaned as he grabbed the side of the copter. "Hey, any landing you can walk away."
Broadway helped Brooklyn to his feet, in which he looked at surroundings.
"Wait, where's Chelsea?" the hothead pointed out.
His answer was the sound of an upchuck, making everyone freeze. Brooklyn and Broadway went around the helicopter, only to find Chelsea on her claws and knees, hurling behind a dumpster.
"Oh god," Broadway turned away holding his mouth in his claws.
When Chelsea was done, she wiped her mouth away and turned to the duo with a dazed expression. She gulped and waved a claw.
"I'm okay…" She then felt another one coming as she turned away hurling some more.
Brooklyn cringed, then turned away shaking. He looked up and saw Lexington sliding down the helicopter with sluggishness. He narrowed his eyes.
"Nice going Lex!" the hothead stomped forward toward his brother.
Lexington cowered back. "Me?! How is it my fault?!"
"If you hadn't lost control on the copter," the hothead jabbed a claw at his brother's chest. "None of this would have happened!"
"Well you weren't any help in saying "Use the force Lex!" I could have handled it without your loud-"
"CUT IT OUT!"
Brooklyn and Lexington cringed down and turned to who yelled. Chelsea was leaning against Broadway as he held her around her waist, still feeling woozy from being sick. Her expression was beyond happy and was indeed very angry.
"Maybe instead of fighting like hatchlings," she said in a heated tone. "You two should figure out what to do with that piece of scrap metal behind you!"
"Hey, it's not-"
Before Lexington could fight back, Chelsea eyes growled demonic red, and her fangs showed through her snarl. That made the trio cower back in fear.
The small gargoyle gulped, knowing he could never beat her anger. "Uh," he quickly turned and gestured the banged-up helicopter. "Let's hide it for now before the sun rises."
With that, Lexington and Brooklyn started to move the copter a bit by some dumpsters. They both found a tarp and decided to cover it for the day. Chelsea gestured Broadway to go and help, only for him to leave her by herself.
As Broadway helped his brothers lifting the tarp over the helicopter, they all heard a loud thud behind them. They turned back, only to see Chelsea sprawled out on the ground.
"I'm less okay…" her voice muffled against the concrete.
After returning to the clocktower, Chelsea was checked by Hudson, only for him to diagnose she has a concussion, and Elisa recommended for her to wear an icepack and take it easy for a while. It was much to the female gargoyles chagrin and the trio's relief that it wasn't anything serious… After knowing she'll be okay, Lexington was discussing about the helicopter to the clan.
"I think I can have it airborne by tomorrow night." Lexington explained as his brothers were in front of him, somewhat annoyed about the idea.
"Why would you want to?" Broadway asked. "What do we need a helicopter?"
Elisa came over. "As long as Derek is flying Xanatos' chopper, we may need one just to keep up."
"As much as I hate the idea of sitting in one of those things again," Chelsea added as she sat behind the trio on the stairs holding an icepack to her forehead. She nodded. "She's right."
Goliath came over, his stoic appearance shown over his emotions. "I'll take over surveillance of Derek and Xanatos tomorrow night." He turned to the four young gargoyles. "You four get the Pack's helicopter working."
"Don't worry," the three turned to Lexington who made a smug smile. "I'll tell you what needs to be done."
Brooklyn turned to him with an annoyed look. "Oh yeah? You and what Starfleet?" He takes his brother by the shoulder and pushes him toward the stairs to get ready for dawn.
Soon the rest of the clan followed the trio, only leaving Goliath and Elisa alone. The leader held his human friend on the shoulder. His face serious in what he's about to tell her.
"Elisa, you must talk to Derek. You must tell him the truth about us."
Elisa sighed. "I'm not sure that'll be enough now. I need proof of whatever Xanatos is planning to convince Derek."
Goliath narrowed his eyes. "Bring him here. When he sees us, he will have the proof he needs."
With that answer, Goliath left Elisa to join his clan for the sunrise. When he was out of earshot, Elisa shook her head.
"No Goliath, its gonna take more than that."
Just like what she said, its gonna take more than just showing the clan to her little brother convince him. She would need proof, actual hard proof to show that Xanatos is not who he thinks he is and get Derek to be on her side. But how? What could convince him? By not telling her brother everything, he doesn't exactly listen to her anymore.
She needs to find a loophole. What could she use? She then realized something. Jackal and Hyena were probably hired by Fox, who was the leader of the Pack, and the one who created the Pack…was Xanatos. It was odd as to why the twins were told to kill Xanatos.
She needs more answers, but not from the millionaire himself.
In one of the visitation rooms of Riker's Island, Elisa sat and waited for Fox to enter. She was a little surprised that Fox was alright for a visit from her. When the red-haired woman took a seat, the detective instantly went down to business.
"Fox I'm here to find out-"
"I know why you're here." Fox cut her off. "David told me you'd come."
"I thought so." Elisa demeanor calm as she listened.
Fox smirked. "He created the Pack you know. Got us together. Me, Wolf, Hyena, Jackal, Dingo. Put us on the air and made us stars."
"Then why are Jackal and Hyena trying to kill him?"
"They don't know he's the boss. Only I do." Fox leaned forward in her chair. "David told me to have them hit the diamond exchange and make himself the next target. He set up his own assassination attempt."
Elisa narrowed her eyes. Practically intrigued at this, but also confused. "But why?"
"He wants your brother." Fox stood up, her hands on the glass to make herself intimidating to the detective, but it didn't work (or so she thought). She turned away crossing her arms. "And what David wants, he gets."
Elisa stayed calm in her seat. "So why tell me all of this?" She chuckled. "Because he left you to rot in jail?"
Instead of making Fox back down, she stood proud, even snickered through her mouth. She turned to the detective. "You haven't got a clue. You're so far behind him its pathetic. He told me to tell you. He doesn't have to hide his plans from you. There's not a thing you can do to stop him."
From her taunt, her features instantly changed to her having a dreamy-like face as she looked up. "He's the most brilliant man on the face of the Earth."
With her rise, came Elisa's fall.
From the visitation room to the gates of the prison, Elisa hardly made a peep, not even acknowledging Fox's farewell. Passing the gate, the detective had her hands in her pockets as she walked away from the building. When she was a good distance, she fished out her pocket and a tape recorder was in her hands. Pressing the button, Fox's voice leeched through the recording as she repeated what she said before.
Elisa smirked. "Nothing I can do? Well, let's see how Derek reacts when he hears about your brilliant man."
As she walked toward her car, she didn't notice someone was coming in. Landing on the neighboring car, Goliath arrived with his usual frown, but had a hint of frustration.
"Oh Goliath," Elisa practically jumped when he arrived, thinking he was a mugger. After a second of breathing in, she turned to him. "What are you doing here?"
"Derek and Xanatos left in the helicopter," he turned the direction where the helicopter left. "Faster than I could follow. They headed north."
Elisa put a finger under her chin. A thought in her head. "He's probably headed for Xanadu, his upstate retreat." She turned back. "Come on. I hope Lex and the guys have got the Pack's chopper working."
Seeing the helicopter, anyone couldn't have guessed it was the Pack's Helicopter. Now it was new and improved for the gargoyles. The now black-colored hull was large enough to fit all six plus Bronx (if it were to happen), with armored sides that resembled gargoyle wings, and the rear rotor had a spiked edge similar to gargoyle's horns. In the helicopter, Lexington took the controls, Broadway was behind him, then Goliath and Elisa, and lastly Brooklyn and Chelsea in the way back.
During the flight, someone was not impressed of the design. "This thing looks like a flying junk pile." It was Broadway.
"Yeah?" Lexington retorted, turning behind. "I suppose that if you'd designed it, it'd be covered in food."
"Uh, not again…" Chelsea groaned, holding the bridge of her nose. She then leaned her head back as she gulped at the sudden jolt of the copter.
"Still sick?" Brooklyn whispered to her.
She turned to him. "A little, but not as bad as last night. Thank goodness Elisa gave me two of those 'Anti-nausea' pills just in case."
Brooklyn nodded, then took her claw in his own, and rubbed his thumb on top of her claw. She turned to him with a smile, thanking him the comfort.
In front of them, Elisa was in an emotional bubble, but she didn't show it. She was just worried that if those Pack twins get to Xanadu before she and her friends, who knows what danger her brother might be in if there too late. As her thought went on, Goliath's voice stopped them.
"We'll get there in time Elisa."
She turned to him; her face still plastered with worry. "I hope so."
In Xanadu, it was just as its name implies. A rustic retreat where the millionaire himself could get away from the busy city life and enjoy the great outdoors.
Walking out of the large cabin, Xanatos and Derek were walking on the stone pathway through the dense forest. The millionaire turned to his security guard.
"That was excellent flying last night," Xanatos praised. "I'm more convinced than ever that I was right to hire you."
Derek turned to him. "I hope that sort of thing isn't a nightly occurrence. I might be safer back with the NYPD."
The millionaire chuckled. "Let's just say that my life is anything but dull."
With those words, he was right. Just as his life couldn't get any duller, Jackal and Hyena, now armed with night gear and holding high tech guns, were prowling toward there prey. Through the bushes, they took aim at the lamp closest to the pair. When two of them blew out, Derek was high alert.
"Get down!" he quickly grabbed Xanatos and dragged him to the ground. He looked around as he took out his gun. "I thought you said this place was secure!"
"I thought it was." The millionaire replied.
Looking through her gun, Hyena took aim at the two figures in the darkness.
She snickered. "This is too easy."
Just as she was about to pull the trigger, the sound of a helicopter was heard from above. Everyone looked up to see the large helicopter the gargoyles were in coming at them. With panic, Jackal and Hyena began open firing at the chopper, only for it to deflect their attacks thanks to the windows rebounding the lasers.
Lexington turned behind. "Still think the armor looks dumb?"
To make more of a point, Lex turned on the spotlights, only to blind their opponents. They exclaimed as they ripped off their goggles. Back in the copter, Goliath narrowed his eyes.
"It's Jackal and Hyena," he stated. "Take them out quickly."
Lexington did just that, with a cheeky smile on his face, he hit a missile button. Coming out of the bottom of the helicopter, a missile shot out and headed straight for the evil twins. Instead of a regular missile, it broke a part to reveal a large net, which quickly trapped both of them to the ground.
"Come on!" Hyena shouted, taking out two knives. Both siblings were able to rip apart the net and ran through the forests.
Back up in the copter, Lexington used his spotlight to follow Jackal. As he did, the pack member jumped into a patch of brush, and tried to shoot down the chopper. As he did, the side hatch open and Broadway, Brooklyn, and Chelsea leapt out.
Broadway went after Jackal, in which he saw the man running for his life. With little effort, the gargoyle was able to grab the man, then made a hard punch in the face, knocking Jackal unconscious. He smirked with pride as he rubbed his hands together.
Over with Hyena, she had struggled to get two particular gargoyles off her tracks. From being blinded, she still had a hard time seeing where she was going, which made her bump into a tree and roll down on her back. Shaking her head, she looked up with squinted eyes, only to see blurs of dark red and blue. Hyena sneered as she carelessly fired her gun above the treetops. In the process, destroying some trees.
Up there, Brooklyn jumped from branch to branch, trying to dodge the many laser fires, and also dodging the exploding trees. As he twisted his body around the trees, he didn't notice a broken tree trunk was falling towards him until too late. He grunted as the heavy trunk was pinned on his back. He tried to lift himself off the trunk, but to no avail.
"Where are you?!" Hyena exclaimed, firing her gun all over her surroundings.
Over at another end, Chelsea pounced out of a bush, tackling Hyena from behind. The woman grunted as she was slammed down by the extra weight, her gun being thrown an extra few feet. Both of them rolled on the ground trying to get the upper advantage, only for Hyena to throw a punch at Chelsea, making her fall back in the dirt, and giving Hyena a chance of escape. The twin found her gun near a bush and found it locked and loaded. With a smirk, she took aim at the laid-out gargoyle.
"Bye bye gargoyle." She cackled.
Before she could fire, Lexington used a laser from the nose of the helicopter, destroying Hyena's gun in the end. Broadway flew down to help Brooklyn out from underneath the tree, then the two along with Chelsea (who came to her feet seconds ago) surrounded Hyena.
The twin sneered, tossing her gun and went in a battle stance. "I'm not beaten yet!"
The click of gun was heard, and Elisa's voice. "Oh yes you are!"
Hyena gritted her teeth, seeing the detective and Goliath with the other gargoyles surrounding her. Knowing she doesn't have a choice; Hyena brought her hands up in surrender.
It wasn't long after Jackal and Hyena were taken away by the police. When they were gone, the gargoyles were standing on the side while Elisa Derek and Xanatos were surrounding each other.
"Detective," Xanatos started, his voice laced being serious "I'm sure your brother was more than capable of handling the situation." He then gave a smile. "But thank you for your help just the same." He looked between the siblings. "Now you'd probably like a private moment."
He took his leave, leaving brother and sister amongst themselves. Elisa turned to Derek, who had been quiet during the whole ordeal. Seeing his eyes down and his frown showing no feeling, Elisa didn't know what he was thinking.
"So they are real." Derek started, not turning to his sister, but to the gargoyles.
Elisa looked at her brother weird. "What do you mean? I didn't tell you about them."
"No, but Xanatos did. He showed me a videotape of them, but I still find it hard to believe."
"Xanatos told you about them?!" Elisa asked, her voiced laced with shock, and a bit of anger.
"Yes," Derek nodded. "He said he tried to help them, but they rejected him. He also admits he made a few mistakes in dealing with them. And with you."
The detective made a cross face. "A few mistakes?!"
Derek crossed his arms. "So you can give up trying to get me to quit because it's not going to happen."
"You have to quit. He's using you." Elisa tried to lay a hand on her brother, but he smacked it off.
"It's my life. Butt out."
"QUIET BOTH OF YOU!"
The siblings stopped their squabbling as they turned to Goliath. Who had his wings spread out, and his face laced with anger. They were shocked, even the other gargoyles were shocked at the leader's outburst.
The said leader stepped forward. His voice laced with anger, and a bit of anguish. "You don't know how lucky you are to have siblings to fight with. All of my rookery brothers are dead. And there is nothing…nothing more important than family."
He then stalked off, leaving not only four stunned gargoyles, but two siblings to think about what he just said. Elisa sighed, brushing her hair behind her ear as she thought of what Goliath said. Her eyes fell to Chelsea, who must of knew what the human was telling her.
The gargoyle turned to the others. "Let's head back to the helicopter. I think they want to be alone."
The trio nodded, then they and the female gargoyle left to leave the two humans alone. Now alone, Elisa turned to her brother.
"You know Derek," her brother turned to her. "He's right. Family is what really matters, and I was wrong about a lot this week. Listen, you don't have to be a cop, and you do have to lead your own life." She shook her head, then fished into her jacket. "But I wasn't wrong about Xanatos, and I wouldn't be a good sister if I didn't give you this."
She took out the tape recorder, then lend it out to him. Her brother took it. "Listen to it or not." Elisa continued. "It's your decision. It's your life."
Looking at her brother one last time, the detective took her leave. Now her brother alone, Derek looked down at the recorder as a few snowflakes landed on the recorder. A blank stare shown on his face at his stared at the recording.
When the gargoyles returned to the clocktower, it was almost dawn. Snow soon encased the whole top of the clocktower, making the ground soft with a few inches. The clock struck 5:05, in which it was time.
Coming out one by one, the gargoyles walked over to their own individual perches. The last to come out were the four young gargoyles, and Elisa stood at the edge of the door to stay out of the wind.
"Hey Lex," Broadway turned to his younger brother. He gave a smile. "Good job on the helicopter."
"Yeah uh," Brooklyn replied, trying to find the right words. "That armor really did help."
"Not to mention it saved all our lives." Chelsea added.
Lexington looked at each of his rookery siblings with a warm smile. "I couldn't have done it without you three."
Soon everyone went to their perches, all of them posing in their own ferocious battle stance. Even though it was cloudy, the sky soon lightens, making each gargoyle turn to a stone statue. A few minutes later, they were starting to get a layer of snow on top of their backs and wings.
Still in the clocktower, Elisa gazed out into the city. Her mind still in memory as to what happen. She had lost to Xanatos. She and the clan may have brought Jackal and Hyena to justice, but she had lost the battle to keep Derek out of harm's way from the millionaire, and now she has to live with it for the rest of her life. It may be his life, but she would always worry whether he's okay or not.
After all, that is what family is all about.
