Characters from Gargoyles belong to Disney!
Chelsea, Cody, and Donna belong to me!
5 weeks after giving birth; 2 AM in the Matthew Apartment
"Oh sweetie, please don't cry." Donna assured her baby daughter with tired eyes and a sweet smile.
Baby Chelsea didn't even hear her mother's pleas as she wailed up a storm. After her mother checked on her for any necessities, the infant had been crying in no hope of stopping. Donna had been trying to calm her down by either rocking her or showing her favorite rattle, but none of them seemed to be helping her. Now here they are in the dimly lit nursery, a mother trying to put her baby girl back to bed.
The mother is mentally at the end of her rope. If she doesn't get her daughter to go to sleep, her neighbors would file another complaint.
"Momma…?"
Donna turned behind her and found her 5-year-old son Cody at the door arch. He was wearing his dark blue onesie with green and orange dinosaurs all over the pjs. He looked like he just woke up because his eyes were half open, and he was dragging his stuffed blue dragon on the floor.
"Cody, everything is okay. Chelsea just doesn't want to sleep. Why don't you go back to bed."
"I can't." Cody came forward, still dragging his stuffed dragon with him. He looked at his baby sister. "What's wrong with her?"
"Chelsea is," Donna looked down at her daughter whose cries became louder every second. She rocked her again. "Your sister is just a bit fussy tonight.. That's all."
"Does she want Smogie?" Cody brought out his stuffed dragon in front of him.
"Honey, you know we can't have anything in your sisters' crib."
"Well why not have it on top of her?"
Donna thought of this, but she wasn't sure. Looking down at the fussy baby, she doesn't really have a choice. She wasn't sure if it'll work or not, but she didn't want to make her little boy feel bad. The mother looked back down at her little boy. She brought her hand out and gestured him to come over. Cody came over with his dragon as Donna put fussy Chelsea back in her crib.
"Here, let me see the dragon."
Cody gave his mom Smogie, and she held him over baby Chelsea. Chelsea still cried a little bit more, but soon stopped as she looked up. When she saw the blue dragon, something unexpected happened. Instead of crying, she gave a look of curiosity, and started to move her hands and legs. She even gave a few coos as if she were happy to see the stuffed animal.
Donna sighed. "Thank goodness." She turned to her boy who was looking at the baby with a warm smile. "That was a great idea Cody. You are such a great brother to your sister."
Cody looked up at her mother with a beaming smile. Both of them turned to the infant who was slowly starting to get to sleep.
Present Day-Manhattan
Cody's eyes instantly opened as he laid passed out on the couch. After finishing his shift at the genetics lab, the 23-year-old came home exhausted and decided to take a little nap on his couch. He never thought that nap would instantly make him fall sleep until the middle of the night. He was in his small apartment, the lights were off and the moonlight seeped through the large windows that led to his small snow-covered fire escape.
The young man rubbed his eyes as he thought of something. "Another dream…" he moaned as he fished around for his glasses. Finding them next to his lamp, he put them on, then brushed his shaggy hair away from his face. Turning back to the lamp, he picked up a small frame that showed his late mother, him as a little boy, and his baby sister all huddled together in a grassy area. It was the last picture of him and his small family at the annual Matthew family picnic before the car accident that killed his mother and possibly his baby sister.
Even though his baby sister wasn't in the car seat, nor her body was found in the area where the car was damaged, he had hope that his sister was possibly still out there. Medics believed he thought of this because he was hiding the trauma of losing his family and kept exclaiming that his sister was still alive. The only thing he told them was only this…
"Somebody stole my sister! I saw a man taking my sister! Why don't you believe me?!"
Nobody believed him, in which there weren't any clues that someone before the ambulances arrived to take him to the hospital. Not even any footprints... They had written him as a child who was mentally ill after losing his mother and sister. He was then sent to live with his uncle and go to therapy sessions to discuss his trauma.
Cody sighed. He knew what he saw. Before he went unconscious, he strongly remembered a dark figure opening the sliding door and taking his baby sister away from him. As much as he was told it never happened, he knew it was real. He even remembered his mother's necklace was above the baby, and it wasn't there when the medics arrived.
"Where are you Chelsea?" Cody asked the photo. His eyes instantly were staring at the infant baby looking at where she saw the camera all those years ago. He caressed his thumb over the baby girl. His eyes narrowed and his mouth turning into a frown. "I know you're out there, and I will find you. Whatever way I can."
Castle Wyvern, 994. The night before the massacre
Goliath walked up the stone steps of his home with a grim face. After placing the four young gargoyles and beast in the rookery, he was still going to find the Vikings and end their raid once and for all. Doing that, he and his mentor were going to find them, but someone else had a different idea.
"We should all go with you." His mate told him trailing behind.
The leader turned to her. "My love, we've been through this."
"I understand what you mean, but I feel you would need more than just you and the mentor. What if the Vikings are laying a trap?"
"We can't risk the castle being unguarded if the Vikings are coming. That is why you and the others are staying here. End of discussion."
Goliath's mate didn't say another word as she and her leader reached the top of the tower. Perched up there was another gargoyle. He had light grayish blue skin (lighter than the second's skin), large wings with light sky-blue membrane, long white hair going down to his chest, two long horns going three inches above his head, and webbed fin-like ears. He was wearing a dark pink chest plate with matching wrist cuffs, and a dark gray loincloth.
The male gargoyle turned to his leader as he jumped off his perch. "Where do you go my brother?"
Goliath turned to him. "To track down the Vikings before they attack again."
"Will you need help?" Before the other male gargoyle could continue, the Magus's voice rang out.
"Foolish creatures," the three gargoyles turned to the Magus who was on the stone railing. "Why are you still here?! If you wait any longer you won't have to track the Vikings." He jumped off and pointed an accusing finger at Goliath. "They'll be at our gates again!"
After saying that, the Magus stormed off, his anger still at presence of the three gargoyles. The second watched him go, then turned to her leader with that same anger.
"Why do we risk ourselves to protect the human's castle?"
"She's right." The other gargoyle frowned. "Let the Vikings have it. We can survive anywhere."
Soon, the sound of peace was heard from below.
"A gargoyle can no more stop protecting the castle than breathing the air."
The three turned, and the mentor was slowly walking up the stairs. A smile at his presence as he finished that statement.
Goliath turned to him. "I will have you at my side, old friend. I will need your tracking skills." He turned to the light blue gargoyle and placed his claws on his shoulders. "Stay here and keep guard my brother. I will see you soon." The other gargoyle nodded silently. The leader finally turned to his mate and placed a claw under her chin. "And you my love, I never lose sight of."
With that, Goliath turned, his mate starting to follow, but stopped as she saw him and the mentor went on the stone railing. Soon both gargoyles jumped into the air, their wings carried them toward the woods. A few seconds later, their selves disappeared through the dark foliage.
Manhattan, Present
Snow fell down the city and made blankets upon blankets of frozen water. Even though this weather had affected the humans from driving the slick roads, it didn't affect the gargoyles at all in the air. While Goliath was up on the walkways brooding, the trio were walking up the stone stairs.
"Going to the movie's Hudson. Want to come along?" Broadway asked.
"Thank you lads, but no." Hudson answered as he sat in his recliner. "Why go out in the snow to see something that will be on cable soon enough."
The potbelly turned his attention to Chelsea who was in the kitchen area waiting for the kettle to heat up on the hotplate.
"What about you Chelsea?"
Chelsea turned to the group. A look of question edged her feminine features. "Let's see…going out in the freezing snow or staying in the warm clocktower?" Her answer was heard as the kettle whistled to her right. She turned to it with a smile, then turned back to the group. "I go with the second answer. Sorry."
"Besides," Hudson continued as he turned to his remote. "Someone has to stay here and guard our home."
That made the trio laugh. "Hudson, we live above a police station. What could happen?" Brooklyn asked.
"You know the old saying. A gargoyle can no more stop protecting the castle-"
"Then breathing the air." The four finished as if they've heard it before.
Hudson looked at the trio with a glare. The trio shrugged and made there way up.
"Yeah yeah we heard that one before." The trio muttered together.
"We don't live in a castle anymore." Lexington remarked.
Up on the walkway, Goliath must have heard what they were talking about. He was somewhat disappointed that the younger generation of the Wyvern Clan weren't at all interested in what a gargoyle is meant to do. Well, almost all of them.
"So Hudson," Goliath looked down and saw Chelsea coming over to Hudson with a mug of hot tea in her claws. "Stop Protecting the castle than breathing the air. What exactly do you mean by that? Who said it first anyway?"
"Well lass," Hudson turned to Chelsea. Somewhat impressed that she was intrigued than the others. "That saying was told by our clan for many generations. Even before I took command. As gargoyles, are sole purpose is only to protect. Our clan, our territory, even other beings who live on it. It was what we've been known to do right before the humans came with their stone fortress. Now, I don't know why it's our sole purpose, nor who said that old saying, but its just-"
"Always been a part of us. Right?" Chelsea asked.
"Exactly." Hudson smiled.
The female smirked as she started taking a few sips of her tea. As the soft liquid went through her taste buds, she then thought of something, but was afraid to ask. She gulped as she looked back at Hudson. She bit her lip as she tried to find her words.
"Then what about those who don't believe in protecting everyone? Like…" She looked between Goliath and the trio who were about to open the doors. She leaned forward to Hudson's ears and spelled out a name quietly. "D-E-M-O-N-A."
"Demona?!"
Chelsea jumped back, almost spilling her tea on poor Bronx. She looked up and saw Brooklyn giving her a somewhat shocked but glaring look.
"Why are you asking about her?" he demanded.
Chelsea gave him a weird look. "I was just asking. Geez…" She went back to her tea and took a sip.
Brooklyn shook his head, then turned back to the doors. Before the trio left, Elisa arrived in the clocktower. Wearing not only her jacket, but also a white scarf and black gloves from the harsh cold.
"Hi Elisa," Lexington called out.
"Bye Elisa." Brooklyn waved, then jumped out into the snow first.
"Do we have time to eat before the show?" Broadway asked as he and Lexington exited the tower.
"Whoo! Nasty out there." Elisa said looking up where the trio left, then turned to Hudson and Chelsea. "So how are you guys surviving this cold?"
"The cold does not bother us." Goliath answered plainly, a grumble through his throat.
Elisa raised an eyebrow. "Maybe not, but something is."
"Is it not time for you to go on duty?" he asked, turning away from her.
Elisa turned to Chelsea who was sipping her tea. She looked at her confused, in turn the gargoyle mouthed. "He's in his moods."
Elisa nodded with understanding, then turned back to the leader. "Yeah, I guess it's time to do a little ole' Protect and Serve."
The made Goliath perk up. He turned back to the human. "Protect? And Serve?"
"It's the police motto. It's what I live for."
"Protect whom?" Goliath thought out loud, completely curious. "And serve how?"
"The people." Elisa answered walking forward. "The honest citizens. We protect and serve them. And we do it for each other."
Goliath jumped down in front of her, his wings fanned out as he landed. Coming forward, he looked down at her as he folded his wings.
"You mean the police? Your clan?"
Elisa smiled. "Right. My clan." She then turned toward the stairs leading down below to her world. "Who will disown me if I'm late for work."
"I'll go with you. Perhaps I can learn something from this."
Elisa shrugged. "Sure, why not? My car is big. I'm sure my partner won't even notice you."
Chelsea did a small spit take and gave a small chuckle. Goliath turned to her with a smile, then followed Elisa littles ways, and then went up the stairs to the cold outside.
Back with the last three, Hudson was about to turn on the TV when he noticed Chelsea still standing next to him.
"Aren't you going with Goliath?" he asked.
"Hmm?" Chelsea turned to him with her mug up to her lips. She took her lips off of it and swallowed. "Should I?"
"Well," he shrugged. "Since you were all curious about how gargoyles protect, why not learn something about what Elisa or the other humans do in the 'Justice system'."
"Well uh..." she tried to put words in a sentence but couldn't put any together. She lightly huffed, knowing he wouldn't say no. "Alright, I'll go." She twisted her talon and gave a groan as she walked.
The old gargoyle gave a light chuckle as Bronx woke up from his nap and looked at the annoyed gargoyle. Chelsea dumped her tea in the sink, put her mug in it, then scurried up the stairs toward the front clockface.
"Sometimes I wish keep my mouth shut." She mumbled as she opened the door toward the freezing outdoors and shut it with a light 'thunk'.
The gargoyles were not the only ones who were active during the snowy blizzard. Up in the highest tower of Castle Wyvern, the room had a Frankenstein like presence in its wake.
Electricity danced across a being covered in cloth, making the lights flicker throughout the tower. Electrodes and wires were connected to the said being and giant generators. Next to the being was a ceramic vase with weird colored smoke rising up into the ceiling. Over by one of the generators, Xanatos was examining different dials and buttons were in working order, and he wasn't alone. Demona was at a table concocting a magic power in a ceramic goblet while reading some pages from the Grimorum.
"If this works, it will be a miracle." Xanatos commented as he turned to her.
The female gargoyle narrowed her eyes as she turned to him. "None of your plans have worked. The Pack, the Steel Clan robots, all been proven useless."
"Your stolen spells haven't done any better." The millionaire countered.
The gargoyle sneered, then looked down at the smoke-filled vase. She took some powder from her goblet, then sprinkled some in the vase, which made an explosion.
"Neither science nor sorcery haven't defeated Goliath, but perhaps a combination of the two could be more effective." She turned to the cloth-covered being, then swept some powder over the said being. The powder then exploded, making it become greenish smoke mixed with a spark of electricity. When the explosion subsided, the smoke seemed to have been absorbed by the being.
"The cantrips have been spoken," Demona said. "The patterns of force are aligned." She turned to Xanatos. "Now it's up to your machines Xanatos."
As if on que, Xanatos turned to a switched, and pushed two of them one at a time. After pushing the last one up, a spark flickered, then that spark powered the generators with such velocity and strength. As electricity danced above the machines, Xanatos increased the power and the two electrodes above the cloth being began to expand with power, then fluent-like magic flowed into the figure. It soon became a flurry of light and energy. Both gargoyle and human looked at this with astonishment.
When the energy dimmed, everyone stood stiff, waiting at the rim for something to happen. Suddenly, a low growl emitted from under the sheet, and long metal claws clenched against the metal table. Unable to contain himself, Xanatos gave a look of madness.
"It's alive-ALIVE!"
Demona turned to the millionaire with a weird look as he smirked.
"I've always wanted to say that." He added.
They soon turned to the rising sheets, in which the thing teared them away. The wires and electrodes fell off as the sheet landed on the floor. In the shadows, with only the light of the candle, was a hulking creature making robotic sounds, and a low growl-like metallic hiss seeped out of it. Its glowing red eye turned slowly toward the two in the room.
"As you said," Demona stated. "It's alive."
Xanatos narrowed his eyes at the creature. "Can it hear us?"
His answer was heard as the creature gave an even deeper growl at the human. The human blinked at this, but Demona stepped in front of him.
"Do you remember me?" she asked it.
The creature looked up and down at her, a small flicker of recognition through his red eye. It nodded slowly, then his eye turned to the millionaire next to her.
Demona gestured him. "This is Xanatos…my servant."
The millionaire gave a hard glare to the gargoyle, not liking being called 'servant', but didn't say anything. The creature turned his body as his legs hanged over the table. His low growls slowly turning into words. His eyes never leaving Demona.
"What-Am I?" It asked slowly.
"You are cold stone, brought back to life."
"Cold…Stone…?" he was confused. Why was he called what she said to him? Where is he? How did he come here? It was as if he had just woken up from a very deep sleep and was forced awake for an unknown reason.
"Don't you remember anything?" the female gargoyle asked.
The creature's mind was in a blur, but he was able to form few pictures in his mind. "I remember…the castle. Goliath, my rookery brother…went to find the Vikings. Dawn came, and then…oblivion."
Demona clenched her right claw at the mention of her ex-mate. "Your brother abandoned us to the mercy of the humans." She took the creatures claw and brought him toward a large mirror. "He's been seduced by their beliefs. It is he who has turned you into this!"
Demona gestured to the mirror, in which the creature gazed into it. Seeing who it-no he is, shock laced over his grotesque features. He was a male gargoyle, but he wasn't a true one. Half of his body was made of machinery, in which half of his head had a metal helmet, his body had a red chest plate, his legs were half skin and machinery along with his tail, and his wings were full metal. He clearly looked like a doll patched up in different patterns. The most horrifying he saw was while his right eye was perfectly normal, his left eye glow a demonic red.
Terrified, the creature howled in great agony, in which he formed a fist and destroyed the mirror into a million pieces.
At the rougher parts of Manhattan, Elisa stopped her car in front of a store called 'Wilkens Groceries." Driving to it, the female detective noticed her partner was acting weird. From the police station to driving, he was very quiet and didn't do any small talk.
When she put on the brakes, she turned to her partner. "Come on Matt. What's up?"
"Nothing." He answered, taking his seatbelt off. "I know the guy who owns this place. He's been robbed three times this month alone." The man got out of the car and gazed at the store. "He's a tough old bird. Born and raised here. He won't let street scum drive him out." He turned to his partner. "I just wish we could protect him better. Coming?"
"Go ahead," Elisa gestured him to go. "I've got some thinking to do."
"What? Afraid your brain will overheat?" Matt teased.
Elisa rolled her eyes and shooed him away. The man shrugged, then walked toward the grocery store. When she saw him entering, the detective turned around, checked if she was alone, then leaned her head close to a small microphone clipped inside her jacket.
"Goliath? Chelsea?" she spoke through the microphone in a normal voice as she put an earpiece in her ear.
Up on a parallel building, Goliath and Chelsea landed on its small rooftop that overlooked the grocery store.
"We can hear you Elisa." Chelsea answered, through her own mic around her neck. She smirked as her claw was over her earpiece. "This technology is cool!"
"State of the art." Elisa spoke with praise through her mic. "This thing picks up everything, and I don't even have to talk loud."
"Yes, a most amazing device." Goliath added with impressment. His claw holding his own mic. "We can hear you perfectly." He looked down toward the window to see Matt talking to Mr. Wilkins, who was an older man with grey streaked hair, wearing an apron over his light blue dress shirt and dark jeans.
"Why does that man keep his shop open?" Goliath asked. "He could be robbed again. Why does he not leave?"
"This is a dying neighborhood Goliath," Elisa explained. "The big markets won't come here. If he closes this store, people will have no place to buy food."
"So are you suggesting that he would rather help others than hide away in his own home?" Chelsea asked with a puzzled look.
Elisa nodded. "Yes."
"So his…community needs him." Goliath realized.
"To survive." The detective finished.
Goliath leaned back on his haunches as he thought of this. Hearing about Wilkins wanting to help his community, it's exactly how he and his clan back in medieval Scotland have protected Castle Wyvern from enemies, and only did it because they believed it was-
"ALL UNITS! ALL UNITS! CODE 3 AT TIME SQUARE!"
Goliath's thoughts were interrupted as Elisa's radio blared out. Back down, Elisa turned to the grocery store, and called out to Matt. When the said detective jumped in the car, Elisa roared the engine and took off down the slick streets.
"What's going on?" Chelsea turned to Goliath.
"I don't know," Goliath stood and spread his wings. He turned to the young gargoyle. "Come, let us follow them."
Goliath jumped into the air first, followed closely by Chelsea as they followed the cop car.
At Time Square, Elisa and Matt were shocked at the large number of cops keeping the civilians at bay, and the extensive amount of damage. A bus was toppled over, and a fire hydrant was gushing water from underground. Elisa came over to Officier Morgan who was the closest.
"Morgan, what's happening?"
"You got me," Morgan shrugged, and looked forward. "Whatever it is, its big, and its mad."
More exclaims were heard as Goliath and Chelsea landed in front of a large lite up sign. Both of them looked down at the scene before them. People running for their lives, water sprouting on the slush covered streets, and even a few cars toppled over like the bus.
"Goliath, what do you see?" Chelsea asked, who turned to her leader.
The said leader looked below toward the wrecked bus. Squinting his eyes, he saw something in the shadows under the spouted water.
Behind the bus, Elisa and Matt sneaked up on the strange creature that was groaning under the sprouting water. Checking to see the coast was clear, Elisa turned to her partner who had his gun on like her. Turning back, both of them ran out, and aimed there weopans at the shadowed suspect.
"Police! Freeze!" Matt yelled.
"You're under arrest!" Elisa added.
The shadowed figure turned with a menacing growl, which made both of them flinch for a second. The figure picked up a car, in which he shattered the mirror and sliced the front and lifted it in the air. Both officers fired their weapons at the creature, but it didn't seem to faze it as it kept the car over its head. Knowing they were in trouble, the two ran for cover as the creature was about to throw the car. Before it could throw it, another figure stooped down and tackled the creature down. The creature fell as the car got thrown and barely missed Elisa and Matt.
Elisa turned back and saw Goliath wrestling the creature with his bare claws. She gasped as he was thrown toward the bus with a hard grunt. She ran back to the gargoyle as she turned to the creature.
"Goliath, what is that?" she asked as she pointed at the creature.
The creature shielded its eyes of the many headlights from the police officers. Coming to the light, still hiding away from all the prying eyes. When it brought it arms down, Coldstone looked at his surroundings with both robotic eyes, then turned its attention to Goliath and Elisa.
The said leader narrowed his eyes. "It is an abomination."
Coldstone blinked, bringing a claw forward. "Rookery brother?" his gawk then turned into a deep glare. "You betrayed us!"
When he brought out his claw, an arm cannon came out and fired at the two. Goliath grabbed Elisa in his arms and jumped away from the exploding bus.
Coldstone gasped at his robotic arm with alarm. "What sorcery is this?!"
Goliath brought Elisa down as Coldstone gawked at his armed. Now that he was distracted, Goliath jumped forward and jump-kicked the robotic gargoyle to the ground. Coldstone slid on the slick road, then brought his arm that shot misfired lasers that destroyed anything in its path.
"Goliath!" Elisa exclaimed, then tried to run to him, but a hand grabbed her. It was Matts.
"Come on! Before they knock the whole building down!" With that, Matt took Elisa, and they ran for safety.
Back with Goliath, he was trying to hold Coldstone, but the robotic gargoyle was overpowering him with newfound strength and robotic intelligence. While wresting, Goliath narrowed his eyes, as if he seen the robot before. Recalling his times at medieval Scotland, he could only remember that one time he left to track the Vikings.
"I…I know you." Goliath muttered. His eyes widened as he looked at Coldstones face. Even with half of it made of metal, he instantly knew who this creature is-or was… "From long ago…you are my brother."
"And you…" Coldstone started, then growled. "Are my betrayer." The robot then lifted Goliath over his shoulders and threw him away.
Back up top, Chelsea was watching the whole fight with fear and worry. She had been watching Goliath and Coldstone battling and has been pacing during the whole time. As much as she wanted to help Goliath, he ordered her to stay on the billboard to be safe and watch for civilians who got too close to them. As much as she didn't want to disobey, she wanted to help Goliath. But how?
Looking around, she saw all the humans, including Elisa, staying as far away from the fight, even a few of them were standing close to the movie theater. Wait, the movie theater? Isn't that where the trio are at? She remembered Broadway saying they were going to the movies. Looking back down, Goliath and Coldstone were still fighting, and the leader looked like he needed help.
Knowing what she had to do, Chelsea spread her wings, and quickly glided toward the movie theater. Just as she landed, a loud explosion was head below her, and the ground disappeared beneath her. She gasped, then quickly latched on the wall. Her claws digging into the concrete. She looked down and saw large chunks of the building falling down on the streets. Thankfully, no civilians weren't harmed.
Chelsea sighed as she leaned her head to the building. "Oh thank god for claws."
She looked up, then scaled the building to find an entryway.
Inside the theater, the trio were watching the classic movie Bambi, in which all three of them seemed to enjoy. While watching the movie, none of them noticed the muffled explosions coming from outside.
"Man, the surround sound is really good!" Broadway commented with praise.
That made Lexington gave a puzzle look. "I don't remember any explosions in Bambi."
Proving his point, more explosions rocked the theater, making all of them look around with confusion. Suddenly, the sound of a door opened abruptly behind them. They all turned, and Chelsea entered with a sigh of relief.
"Oh," Chelsea looked at the screen and leaned her back against the door. "Thank god you're here."
"Chelsea?" Brooklyn leaped from his seat and ran up the many bleachers where she stood. "What are you doing here? What's happening?"
Chelsea gulped some air in her throat, then breathed as she answered. "You guys want a short or long explanation?"
"Short-Short-Long." While Brooklyn and Broadway said short, Lexington answered long. The three of them looked down at the smaller gargoyle with weird faces.
"What? She describes things so easily." Was all Lexington answered.
Back outside, Goliath and Coldstone were still fighting, in which the leader was trying to get the upper hand without trying to harm his rookery brother.
"Brother," Goliath exclaimed. "Why are you doing this?!"
Coldstone didn't answer as he let out another blast, which was shot toward a building Goliath was standing near. The purple gargoyle didn't have time to dodge and was partially buried under the pile of rock. As Goliath laid in the rock, Coldstone slithered forward.
"You have left us brother," the robot replied coldly. "You abandoned us where we were awaiting our deaths from the humans!"
Goliath's eyes widen as Coldstone picked him up over the robot's head.
"Now you will pay for destroying me and our clan."
Whooshing was heard, and a large hup cap hit the robot gargoyle straight on the left arm. The gargoyle grunted, then turned to the four young gargoyles were either standing or in front of the toppled bus.
"Put him down ugly!" Broadway bellowed at Coldstone. "And I mean now!"
Lexington pounded the tire, bringing the hup cap in the air for a second. Brooklyn snatched it in his claws and threw the cap high in the air, in which it missed by a few inches. It gave Goliath the chance as he wriggled his body then joined the others.
"Goliath, what is that thing?" Brooklyn asked.
"It is one of us…" Goliath answered, then breathed. "Or used to be."
Coldstone widened his eyes, his red one zoomed in on all of them. "More traitors! You will all pay!"
"We are not your traitors' brother!" Goliath tried talk sense into his brother.
"But you betrayed the clan! It's now destroyed!"
"We were all betrayed!"
"Too true."
The clan looked up to see Demona glide down to a nearby rooftop, and land between two steel clan robots. One silver with green, and the other with red.
"I should have known…" Brooklyn snarled as he looked like he was getting ready to jump. Just as he did, Chelsea grabbed him on his shoulders and kept him in place.
"Please don't…" She whispered in his ear. Brooklyn turned to her, seeing her pleading eyes. Shaking his head, he looked back up at Demona with a glare.
Goliath looked up at Demona, realization clearly shown on his face. "You told him these lies…" he then yelled. "I lived for my clan!"
"And they died for you!" Demona snapped back, pointing a clan down at him. "Smashed to dust by the humans you trusted! We have each created our own clans Goliath. You have yours, and I have mine."
"Some clan she has…" Chelsea whispered bitterly to Brooklyn. "All she has is mindless robots and…Coldstone." She looked at the half flesh half robot gargoyle with sorrow.
"You have no clan." Goliath growled up, pointing a claw at Demona. "You don't know the meaning of the word!"
Demona narrowed her eyes; silence overcame her as she glared at her former mate. She turned to the robot gargoyle below her. "Destroy them Coldstone."
Behind her, the red robot placed a claw on her shoulder. It turned to her.
"Lets not shed blood," Xanatos' voice rang through the robot. "I want them alive. Remember?"
Demona sneered, ripping her shoulder away from the red robot. She glared down at Coldstone. "Destroy them, and we will survive!"
Coldstone seemed hesitant. "Survive?" He gestured his mismatched body. "Like this?"
"Appearances mean nothing. We are the true gargoyles! They have been corrupted by the humans!"
Goliath narrowed his eyes, then turned to his former brother he knew from the long past. Even though his body was ripped from his former gargoyle self, he still sees the rookery brother he remembered long ago.
"There has been enough death." Goliath spoke softly. "There are so few of us left my brother."
Coldstone's eye widened, clearly hearing his former rookery brother's words. They sort of sound like Demona's, in surviving, but something seems different, and he can't figure it out.
Both gargoyles turned away as they saw a large truck coming in, and reporters sprawled out of the truck. Elisa, who had been watching the whole ordeal, looked down in her hidden mic.
"Goliath, we don't want these on the eleven o'clock news." She whispered.
Goliath nodded quickly. He looked up at Demona and Xanatos' robots. "Xanatos, I'm sure you can communicate via your robots, and I doubt you want to see any more destruction done to your city. Perhaps we should move to someplace less…fragile."
Demona narrowed her eyes. "No! We end this now!"
Just as she was to continue the red robot grabbed her shoulder again. "An excellent idea Goliath. I propose we meet…"
Elisa listened carefully at Xanatos' words. When he finished, she called through her mic. "I'll be there Goliath, and I'll bring help."
Back on the rooftop, Demona and the Steel Clan robots took off into the skies, disappearing in seconds through the clouds. Coldstone activated his rocket jets and followed them behind. Meanwhile, Goliath and the others scaled a building to gain some height off the ground. They jumped into the air, disappearing into the sky.
"Then…that's it?" Matt asked his partner. "Is it over just like that?"
Elisa narrowed her eyes, then turned to Matt. "Not hardly."
Meanwhile, over in a crowd of frightened people, Cody watched the whole ordeal that just happened in Time's Square. While he was doing some late-night grocery shopping, he saw the police officer who talked to Mr. Wilkins ran off in a hurry. The young man was curious as to what was going on and decided to follow. When Cody arrived, he never expected to see what he believed were…gargoyles? He wasn't sure if they were real, or they were part of a really good theater company that performed on the streets. He knew that was impossible because people were really in a state of panic. Not only that, but he had some strange feeling that he needs to get a closer look at them. He doesn't know why, but his gut was telling him he needs to see them fully than from the crowd.
Turning to his right, Cody jumped in his old Honda accord that wasn't destroyed by the robotic gargoyle. He turned on the ignition and decided to go look for the gargoyles.
The gargoyles glided toward one of the bridges that connected Manhattan to the mainland. Not only it was under construction, but it was also bare empty with no humans. A perfect area for the gargoyles to fight. The five gargoyles landed first on the tower, and looked around.
"Hey, looks like we beat them here." Lexington pointed out.
Once he said that, the sound of a jet was heard from above, and a laser was fired down. The clan exclaimed, which all were scattered in many directions, barely staying on the snow-covered tower.
"Ugh, remind me to be fashionably late next time." Brooklyn groaned; his face covered in snow.
Chelsea wiped the snow out of her hair, then looked up. Her eyes widened. "Here they come!"
Demona arrived with a high-tech laser and was followed closely by the steel clan robots and Coldstone. When the red head fired another laser, Brooklyn dodged then hanged over the tower. He narrowed his eyes as he saw Demona gliding below him. Seeing his chance, he dove down, taking Demona down with him.
"Got any spells to save you now?" he growled.
As he and Demona were fighting each other, they collided with the main cable of the bridge, then they crashed on the road below. Both unconscious.
Up in the sky, Broadway was being chased by the red steal clan robot. He dove down, made many twists and turns through the bridge cable wires. Turning another bend, he was almost shot by the red robot.
Still on the bridge tower, Goliath and Coldstone were at it with each other. While one was trying not to harm his brother, the other was trying to end him badly.
"I…don't want to hurt you!" Goliath grunted.
"You already have!" Coldstone retorted as he pushes Goliath back.
Meanwhile, Lexington and Chelsea were spinning and dodging the green and silver robot. Looking back at the robot, the two gargoyles looked at each other, then to the tower close to them. Both smirking with a plan in mind. Diving toward the tower, the robot followed as its only target were the two gargoyles, and not noticing its surroundings. When the two gargoyles turned opposite directions from the tower, the robot crashed to it beyond repair.
The two gargoyles landed on the same tower, both hi-fouring each other at the end.
"Nice trick if I say so myself." Chelsea smirked.
Lexington laughed. "Yeah, they always fall for that trick." Suddenly, shots were heard above them. "Uh-oh!" he yelped as the two looked up.
Down below, Cody parked his car near the start of the bridge then ran past the 'do not cross' signs. He stopped behind a large storage box near the edge of the bridge and was shocked at what he saw. He spotted two gargoyles laid out on the road unconscious, then saw two more up in the air. He gasped as the red and silver one shot red lasers at an aqua blue one.
"A robot?" Cody questioned. Opening his left pocket, he took out his small Nikon camera to take some pictures.
Back up in the sky, Broadway was dodging the lasers from the robot. While winding past the suspension cable lines, he didn't notice the robot fired down on the cable until it was too late. Grunting, Broadway was now tangled in some loose cable on his arms legs and wings.
"Oh great…" he swore under his breath. He looked forward and gasped.
The red robot was diving down toward him, laser gun ready to fire. Before it could fire, two loud screeches dove down, Lexington and Chelsea tackled the robot down, and they lifted their wings up in the air. The robot crashed landed on the road where some workers left some paint supplies and a ladder.
Lexington and Chelsea landed, then ran to where Brooklyn was still laid out unconscious. Chelsea took Brooklyn's face and laid two fingers under his head.
"Is he okay?" Lexington turned to his rookery sister.
His answered was heard as Brooklyn groaned and lifted his chest for a second. He squinted his eyes open, seeing a perfect view of the female gargoyle before him.
Chelsea sighed. "He's alright."
Before they could relax, movement was heard behind them. They turned and saw the red robot staggering in a few steps. Smoke seeped out through its body as the robot brought its claws to its head. It pulled its head to reveal Xanatos. The two now three gargoyles stared at him with shock and disbelief.
"Xanatos." The green gargoyle whispered.
Suddenly, a loud roar rang in the air. The gargoyles looked up to see both Coldstone and Goliath taking a drop off the bridge.
"NO!" Broadway shouted, still in his bindings.
The other three ran straight to the railing, but only saw a loud splash into the dark icy waters, much to their horror.
"Goliath!" Lexington exclaimed.
In the watery depths, Goliath and Coldstone were sinking to the bottom of the river. While Goliath was starting to lose consciousness, Coldstone was staring down at his rookery brother. His body, unable to lose his life force. As he stared at the gargoyle, a vague memory laced through his head from his mentor.
"A gargoyle can no more stop protecting the castle then breathing the air."
Those words rang through his mind as Goliath's body drifted deeper in the waters. Coming back to life, he was only told to destroy the traitors that betrayed him and his destroyed clan and survive. Even though he heard that from his rookery sister, was that what the clan would want? Destroy in order to survive?
"Breathing the air...Protect..."
His eyes blinked when he saw Goliath trying to grab his claw. When he did, Coldstone felt something he hadn't felt in a long time. A warm touch from a close companion. Looking into Goliath's eyes, he saw the eyes of a long-lost friend who he thought he would never see again after he left Castle Wyvern. They were the same eyes that he would see again after a harsh battle, or a hold from a brother born from a long-lost friendship. That touch soon vanished as Goliath slowly went down into the watery depths.
Realizing this, Coldstone spurred into motion as he grabbed his rookery brother's claw.
Back on the bridge, Brooklyn and Lexington were helping Broadway out of the cables while Chelsea looked up at them with worry.
Looking forward, Broadway took notice of something, and points. "Look!"
The clan turned in time to see Coldstone burst out of the water with Goliath in his arms. When the robot landed, the three landed behind Chelsea as Coldstone carried Goliath towards them.
"Is he…" Broadway gulped as the four stepped forward.
"He lives." Was all Coldstone said as he brought Goliath down.
Goliath began to cough up water as the four young gargoyles began to surround him.
"He's okay." Brooklyn spoke out as everyone had looks of relief on each face.
"But you're not."
Everyone turned to the voice and saw Demona, now fully conscious, and standing on a large steel box, aiming her laser at them.
"Thank you so much for saving Goliath for me," she spoke with malice. "For his demise!"
Xanatos, who had been in the back the whole time, stepped forward. "Wait!"
"You said destroying my brother is the only way to survive." Both of them turned to Coldstone, who stood in front of the clan with his wings spread over them. "Is that all there is for us? Mere survival?"
Demona narrowed her eyes. "Is that enough?"
Goliath groaned, still frigid from the icy waters, but stepped forward. "Gargoyles protect. It is our nature. Our purpose. To lose that…is to be corrupt, empty…" he shook his head. "Lifeless."
Coldstone turned to his brother. "Then what do you protect?"
"Enough of this!" Demona's voice was heard as she aimed her laser at Goliath and fired it.
Before everyone could process this, Coldstone quickly jumped in the way, taking the shot himself. He exclaimed as his body sparkled with intense electricity, and he fell back toward the edge of the bridge.
"NO!" Goliath shouted.
When Coldstone's body went over the edge, his tail hit a storage box, which moved slightly toward the edge of the bridge. In the process, pushing a human over the edge of the rail.
Cody exclaimed as he felt his body roll over the railing, but quickly gripped his hands on the concrete edge of the road. His finger wriggling with struggle at the edge. He turned his head, and saw the robot disappear under the icy waters. He nearly exclaimed as he saw the large purple gargoyle jump in the icy water after him.
He looked up again, only to see his left hand gave out, and his right holding him away from the icy hell below. Just as his right hand was about to fall down with him, an azure blue claw clasped onto his wrist. He gasped, seeing he was saved by the female gargoyle with long brown locks. Half of her body was over the railing while the other half from the waist down was being held by a large pale green and red gargoyle.
"Hang on!" the female spoke over the wind as she was pulled up by the two gargoyles.
Cody gulped as he saw the pale green and red gargoyle pulled her over the railing, then the olive green one helped her pull him back on the safe side. When he felt his feet back on the bridge, Cody's legs gave out as his arms and knees held him up. Aftershock taking him instantly with shivering breaths came out. He thought he heard them talk to one another, but couldn't hear him because of the loud white noise surrounding himself.
The four gargoyles turned away from the human, only to see Demona aiming her gun at them.
"At least I can finish you four…" she smirked. She exclaimed as a lose laser beam knocked her gun away. She turned to glare at Xanatos, who had his arm gun out at her.
"I told you before," Xanatos narrowed his eyes at her. "I want them alive."
Before he could continue, Bronx came into view, running toward the man. The beast barked as he tackled the millionaire on the road. The man did push the beast off, but was then tackled down again with his gun out of reach.
"Don't move!"
Everyone turned, and saw Elisa stood with her gun in front. Hudson landed behind her with his wings broadened out.
"It's over Xanatos." The detective said with narrowed eyes.
Xanatos smirked. "Not quite."
Before anyone could react, Xanatos activated his rocket jets, slipping out of Bronx's grip. He twisted his body, then took Demona in his arms, and the two were gone in an instant.
Chelsea sighed, then pressed her claw against her forehead. Exhaustion bloomed around her features. She turned her head to the where the human she and her friends saved, only to see him disappeared. She blinked as she saw his tracks telling her he ran off in a hurry before anyone could catch him.
"It took me a while to lose Matt," Chelsea's thoughts were interrupted by Elisa who came over to the gargoyles. "Is everyone okay? What happened to the monster?"
Her answer was only the four young gargoyles casting down looks of grief. That made Elisa and Hudson confused.
"What's wrong?" Elisa asked again.
"It was no monster," Everyone turned to Goliath who was soaked to the bone from the lake. His eyes cast down as well. "He was family…"
Elisa froze.
Goliath shut his eyes. "And now he's gone…" he came forward, grief completely struck his face as he walked.
Elisa looked down with sorrow. "I'm sorry…" was all she could muster.
Looking down, Goliath saw each of his clan mates looking up at him as if they were asking 'What now?'.
The leader took a breath in, the sighed out with grief escaping. "Let's go home."
That answer alone, made the clan smile with content.
The clan gathered around on another on top of the bridge and overlooked the city. All of the city lights illuminated the night, and the clan were gazing at it with calm stares.
"Goliath?" Lexington turned to Goliath. "When you told Coldstone that gargoyles protect…"
"Like we breathe, boy." Hudson pointed out. "You know that."
"But" Brooklyn chimed in. "What do we protect?"
"The clock tower." Hudson answered.
Goliath shook his head. "No. That is merely where we sleep." He looked forward. "This island, Manhattan. This is our castle."
That made all the clan turn to look at the endless city below them.
"From this day forward," Goliath continued. "We protect all who live here. Human and Gargoyle alike."
After saying that, he feels he fulfilled what his old clan did back in ancient Scotland. Recalling, Goliath's clan protected their old home Castle Wyvern from enemies for many generations, and always believed that home is where they protect. Right now, Manhattan is his clan's home. Not just the clocktower, but also where the tower stands in. Just like what Elisa told him when he first laid his eyes on the city, the invaders don't come from the outside, but from the inside. He needs to protect it from those invaders, whether there old or new foes.
"Are you alright?" The leader's thoughts were interrupted by Elisa's voice. "Is there anything you need?"
Goliath looked down at her. A small smile grazed his face. "Yes. I need a detective."
Both gargoyle and human smiled at one another. That glance will be the start of a long friendship that may last for a long time. The gargoyle then picked up his human companion, in which they lead the rest of the gargoyles for home. Hudson Chelsea and Lexington were behind Goliath while Brooklyn and Broadway carried Bronx in the back.
"You know Goliath," Broadway's voice popped in the back. "While you were in the lake, the four of us kind of protected a human today on the bridge."
That made Goliath freeze, his arms going stiff as he held his human friend, then turned his head to the potbelly gargoyle with wide eyes.
"What?!" his voiced laced with shock.
Broadway gulped, his face completely scared at his leader's angered look. "Chelsea started it..." he peeped.
That said gargoyle gawked at her rookery brother from the front. "Tattle tale..." she huffed to the back.
Cody plugged a black cord on his desktop, then plugged it in his camera.
His fingers automatically moving the mouse to command the arrow on the screen to click on a new file. When he clicked on it, the file opened up to reveal all of the photos he took on the Brooklyn Bridge tonight. He clicked on the first one he took, which was the pale green gargoyle getting chased by the red and silver robot that turned out to be Xanatos. From looking at the photo, he thought he was seeing a hallucination of actual gargoyles roaming the city of Manhattan.
He scrolled though each picture, which all of them depict the fight that went on at the bridge. He probably took more that 20 or 30 photos and couldn't seem to stop as the fight progressed. As he skimmed through every photo, so far, he saw that three-no five of those creatures (including some giant dog beast) were fighting against another gargoyle and that millionaire Xanatos. He also remembered before he scrambled away, he saw a woman in on that whole quarrel with those different sides. What was that all about?
Questions began to fill his head as a war raged on in his mind. Was that whole experience real or an illusion? He doesn't know who or what to believe. If he took these photos to the police, he might be written as crazy as what happened many years ago. He may need to figure this out by himself.
He stopped scrolling until he was face to face with a photo of the same female gargoyle that saved him at the bridge. Her expression laced with shock with the red and olive-green gargoyle. He doesn't know why, but something seems oddly familiar about her. Even though she had distinct gargoyle features from her horns to her strange colored skin, her almond shaped eyes and brown hair were features he'd seen before but can't seem to figure it out. He did want to talk to them, mostly her, but his flight instincts told him to run toward his car and get as far away from them as possible.
"Who are you?" Cody asked the photo in front of him. "And what are you doing here in Manhattan?"
