After untangling herself from Stefan's loving embrace with great willpower and considerable resolve, Elena set off for the Lockwood mansion to assist Mrs. Lockwood, who was hosting the Founders' Party.
Since their official reunion three years ago, Stefan and Elena were inseparable, their passion for each other evident in the way they couldn't keep their hands off one another. They were firmly in the honeymoon phase, basking in their rekindled love. The journey they had taken together had been long and challenging, and they had come so far as a couple. Together, they were unbreakable and unstoppable.
Following her heart-wrenching breakup with Damon after a year of tortuous romance, Elena was left shattered. She had lost all her marks, and with Stefan, her brother and her best friends gone, she felt utterly alone. She questioned her past choices, her beliefs, her identity, and her future. In the midst of her turmoil, Stefan returned to Mystic Falls because he knew Elena needed him, and being the kind and gentle soul he was, he couldn't help but see her through this dark time.
The months that followed were filled with trials and hardships: Damon's departure, Rebekah's killing of Elena and her subsequent transformation into a vampire. Throughout it all, Stefan was there, guiding her through the challenges of her new life. Much like he had done with Caroline, he taught her how to be a vampire. He taught her how to hunt and how to control her bloodlust, indulging only in a vegetarian diet. It was not an easy time for either one of them, but Stefan set aside his past hurt to be a source of support for her.
As they spent more time together, Stefan's kindness and consideration towards Elena reminded her what a special man he was. Their connection strengthened, and the love she once had for him reignited. Elena realized that letting Stefan go was the biggest mistake of her life and vowed to win him back. It took time, effort, and a lot of reassurance on Elena's part, but eventually, Stefan's heart was won over, and they resumed their relationship, stronger and more devoted to one another than ever before.

Stefan was in his room getting ready for the evening. He was also keenly waiting for Caroline. He hadn't seen her for almost two years, which was essentially a week when you were a 154-year-old vampire, but he had missed her… a lot, and he was very excited to see her again.
He was finally getting his blood addict sponsor and bunny hunting pal back. More than that, he was getting his best friend back. That was who Caroline Forbes had grown to become to Stefan: his sounding board, his confidante, his human diary of sorts. She was someone he could be his true self with, without any pretenses. She was someone who accepted him fully for exactly who he was. She was one of the few people he knew he would always be able to rely on. Of course, the same could be said about Elena. He remembered their parting words before she left to assist Mrs. Lockwood with preparing for the evening's festivities.
"You are lucky you did not wrinkle my dress." Elena remarked as she smoothed over the fabric of her dress, earning a chortle from Stefan.
"I'm not exactly an amateur, babe." he replied, his lips curling into a playful smile as a mischievous thought crossed his mind. "Although if I had, perhaps we could have foregone this entire party."
Elena's brow furrowed in surprise, and she glanced back at her boyfriend. "First of all, this is only my first dress of the evening. I will be changing at Mrs. Lockwood's once I'm done helping her." She informed him. "And second of all, I thought you said you were looking forward to this party."
He shook his head. "Correction. I said I was looking forward to seeing Caroline tonight. I don't need to attend the party for that. She'll be here in a couple of hours."
"True. But then you'd miss out on the chance to dance with me." She countered with a teasing smile.
Stefan silently chuckled. She knew full well how much he loathed dancing, a fact that made his occasional compliance all the more endearing. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for her. Making her happy was his purpose in life.
"I can't wait to see Caroline either, although I have to say I feel a bit apprehensive." She mused.
"Apprehensive? Why?"
Elena's shoulders lifted in a shrug, and before Stefan's inquisitive look, she further offered, "She just sounded a little strange the last few times I spoke to her over the phone. She seems different, you know?" she struggled to articulate her opinion, her expression contemplative. "Less talkative, significantly less bubbly… just really un-Caroline-like."
"Haven't you spoken twice in the past 6 months?"
"Well, yes! My point exactly! Through no fault of my own. She has been distant, and I have no idea why." She confided pensively. "So has Bonnie as a matter of fact. To a lesser extent sure, but still."
Stefan took a moment to think, absorbing Elena's observations and giving them the consideration they warranted. He hadn't noticed anything himself, but Elena knew Caroline quite well, and he trusted her judgment where the blonde was concerned. Caroline acting distant from Elena was indeed disconcerting, and he wondered if there was something bothering their friend that she hadn't shared with them. It was unlike her to keep things bottled up; Caroline was usually very open and vocal about her feelings.
Stefan stood up from the bed and walked over to Elena. "You think something might be wrong with her." He stated more than he asked, rubbing a comforting hand over her shoulder.
Elena's sigh carried her uncertainty."I don't know. Maybe it's just stress from work or something going on in her personal life, but I can't shake this feeling that there's more to it."
"Well, we'll see her soon. She plans to stay in Mystic Falls for at least a couple of weeks, so that will give us some time to really talk to her and figure out what's going on." Stefan responded with determination, a clear action plan in mind.
Elena nodded in agreement, her concern slowly easing. "You're right. I just hope she's okay. I hope they both are. I figured when they moved away for college together and I stayed in Mystic Falls that we might grow apart a little, and I understand that they now share memories with each other that I don't, but they're still my best friends, and I want to be there for them if they need me."
"You will be." Stefan reassured her and pressed a loving kiss upon her cheek before adding, "We both will. She's my best friend too, Elena."
She raised an eyebrow at that. "I thought I was your best friend."
"You" Stefan started as he cupped her face. "… are my everything." He replied, emphasizing the last word.
The sound of the front door opening pulled Stefan from his thoughts as his heightened senses detected Caroline's arrival.
"Hello! Anyone here?"
Caroline's cheerful voice echoed through the mansion and Stefan rushed downstairs at vamp speed.
Within two seconds, Stefan was suddenly in front of her, his arms wrapping around her as he lifted her off the ground and twirled her up in the air. She let out a shriek of surprise at his bold move.
"Salvatore, put me down!" Caroline protested, though her eyes held a spark of amusement.
Stefan chuckled at her reaction but still gave in and gently released the blonde.
It took a minute for Caroline to recover. "Gosh Stefan, how happy does Elena make you?!"
It was quite unusual for Caroline to see Stefan so enchanted. Before her departure for Boston what felt like decades ago but in reality was only a few years, she had gotten accustomed to his broody mood. The only time she remembered seeing him so genuinely happy was when he and Elena first got together. Consequently, the only explanation that came to her mind for Stefan's current blissfulness was the blooming of the relationship between her two friends.
She didn't doubt that Stefan was excited and very pleased to see her, but she couldn't possibly be the only reason for this glow he had. Could she?
He smiled at her, his happiness radiating off of him. "Very happy."
"Clearly."
Stefan chuckled at Caroline's comment and then pulled her in for a hug. They remained like that, in each other's arms, for a solid minute.
"I missed you, Caroline." He eventually broke the silence, the sincerity in his voice echoing his sentiments.
The words settled someplace deep in Caroline's heart, a balm to her soul. Although she had never lived there, being back in the Salvatore mansion somehow felt like being home. Or perhaps it was being in Stefan's embrace that caused the feeling. She had been very apprehensive about returning to Mystic Falls after so long, but she now hoped that reuniting with her friends would turn out to be just what shee needed.
"I missed you too" She replied, smiling inwardly, her eyes closed, relishing in the moment. And she had. She had missed him immensely.
When Caroline shot a glance at her watch, panic took her and she pulled away from Stefan's grip. It was past five p.m., which meant she hardly had two hours to get ready for the Founder's party. Noting her alarm, Stefan led her upstairs, told her to pick a room –whichever she wanted to stay in –and get ready there.

Rebekah was in her elegantly adorned room within the stately mansion—her brother's house, as he so often liked to remind her. Bathed in the soft, ethereal glow of a chandelier, the blonde vampire stood before her opulent mirror as she finalized her makeup for the Founder's party with a meticulous hand.
Eyes framed with subtle smoky shadows and lashes lengthened with mascara created a gaze that was both mysterious and inviting. Her lips, painted a soft, inviting shade of red, were a perfect complement to her porcelain complexion, lending warmth and a touch of sensuality to her stunning face.
Initially, Rebekah had no intention of attending that 'study' party, convinced she would end up feeling ignored and uncomfortable like she usually did at these functions.
However, Matt, with his persistent charm and seet promises, had somehow persuaded her to accompany him. He had assured her that she wouldn't be relegated to the background, that he would make sure she enjoyed herself, and that his friends would treat her with respect. After considerable coaxing, Rebekah finally relented, though a nagging doubt lingered.
All her "enemies" would be in attendance: Elena, Stefan, Bonnie, and Damon—or the 'Scooby-Doo gang,' as Klaus had sardonically nicknamed them. Rebekah knew that despite dating Matt for nearly a year, she hadn't quite won them over, and truthfully, they hadn't won her over either. Far from it.
As she put the finishing touches on her expertly curled hair, the distant sound of Matt's car engine signaled his arrival. Fearful that her brothers might seize this opportunity to behave like overprotective siblings and intimidate Matt (mostly to irk her), Rebekah hastily slipped into her alluring red high-heels, clutched her elegant purse, and glided downstairs.
Matt's anticipation was palpable as he turned to face the staircase, his eyes widening in awe as Rebekah made her graceful descent. She was adorned in a stunning evening gown, a fusion of deep red and royal purple that clung to her curves, enhancing her natural elegance.
Noting Matt's astonished gaze, Rebekah felt her cheeks turn a soft crimson, and a triumphant smile played upon her lips. Mission accomplished.
"You look beautiful," Matt breathed, his voice filled with wonder.
Her appreciative smile deepened as she continued down the stairs, her heels clicking softly against the polished wood.
Kol, who had been observing the scene with an amused expression, glanced between the young man and his sister. Sensing the burgeoning awkwardness, he did something quintessentially Kol-like. With a dramatic roll of his eyes, he turned to Matt and dryly mumbled, "Bring her home fully covered," before sauntering upstairs.
Rebekah merely rolled her eyes knowingly and descended the last few steps to meet her boyfriend.
When she finally reached his level, Matt tenderly held out his arm for her to wrap her own around. "Shall we?" he proposed, gesturing to the grand front door with a gallant air.
Rebekah nodded, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. With arms intertwined, they departed the mansion, stepping into a night filled with possibilities.

Under the warm glow of her room's vanity mirror, Caroline was preparing herself for the evening's grand event.
Her golden dress, a masterpiece of design, clung to her slender frame, an embodiment of grace and sensuality. Crafted from an exquisite fabric that shimmered in the dim light, the floor-length gown was expertly crafted with a plunging neckline and an open back, adding an allure of sensuality without sacrificing its innate elegance. The bodice, adorned with intricate embroidery, delicately hugged her form, accentuating her curves and lending an air of regality that matched her immortal bearing.
She had opted for minimal jewelry. A pair of exquisite teardrop diamond earrings promised to add a sprinkle of glamour and sophistication to her look. Complementing them was a delicate bracelet encircling her wrist, its golden links intertwining with elegance and simplicity.
Turning her attention to her makeup, Caroline was aiming for a natural, yet striking look. With skilled hands, she applied a foundation that perfectly matched her porcelain skin, creating a flawless, dewy complexion. Her eyes were framed with a touch of smoky eyeshadow, a mix of gold and bronze hues that complemented her dress perfectly. A swipe of black liquid eyeliner added definition, followed by a generous coat of mascara that made her lashes thick and voluminous. A soft flush of peach blush adorned her cheeks, and her lips were painted with a rose lipstick.
It was her hairstyle that truly completed her look. Her golden tresses were styled in an intricate updo, a few loose, wavy tendrils escaping to frame her face delicately. The hairstyle revealed her slender neck and brought attention to the gorgeous earrings she was wearing.
Caroline admired her own reflection in the mirror, turning and examining herself from different angles, her radiant smile revealing the confidence she felt. She was a vision of timeless elegance and beauty, a blend of immortal grace and the vivacious spirit that made her unique. An ethereal sight that would linger in the memories of all who beheld her tonight.

The night had just begun, but Carol Lockwood's sprawling estate was already teeming with a lively congregation of townsfolk. The grand hall was bathed in soft, ethereal light, casting a romantic glow over the assembled guests. Chandeliers sparkled above, and the subtle fragrance of roses filled the air.
Among the sea of familiar faces, Elena could spot former classmates everywhere. She was engaged in a conversation with April Young when she caught sight of Stefan and Caroline, arm in arm at the entrance. Excusing herself, she moved towards them and practically screamed Caroline's name as wrapped her in a hug so exuberant it might have proven fatal had the blonde still been human.
The brunette had such a delighted expression on her face her happiness was unquestionable. As Elena squeezed her even more, Caroline's almost-growl of mock-protest and her futile struggles to escape her best friend's crushing grip brought forth a soft chuckle from Stefan.
"God, you two are definitely made for each other. Stefan had the exact same reaction when I arrived at your house! Or perhaps this is just a plan to kill me once again?" Caroline teased after her friend eventually released her.
Caroline was genuinely happy for her two best friends. They both seemed so blissful. She couldn't help but envy them slightly. She had but a vague recollection of what it felt like to be blissfully in love and happy.
"Hey, speaking of which, I noticed you two came in arm in arm. Now, what was that? You just arrived and you're already trying to steal my boyfriend?" Elena teased back, her hands weaving their way around Stefan's waist in a proprietorial gesture as she uttered the words 'my boyfriend'. Taking advantage of their new proximity, Stefan whispered in his girlfriend's ears "You look amazing".
A soft blush dusted her cheeks, a delicate rose to match the red of her dress. Elena looked lovely indeed. She wore a strapless dress that hugged her lithe figure in all the right places and seemed to have been designed specifically to captivate Stefan. It exposed her delicate collarbones and the soft curve of her shoulders.
Her luxurious hair was unbound, transformed into a sea of chocolate curls that framed her face and cascaded down her back like a waterfall. Each curl seemed to have been meticulously arranged crafted, lending her a touch of romantic softness that perfectly complemented the boldness of her dress.
Riding the wave of their good-natured banter, Caroline responded, "Oh no, I wouldn't dream of it." She then turned to Stefan and added, "However, I am counting on you for a dance later. I doubt Rebekah will let me get within two feet of Matt." She commented dryly as her gaze swept across the room, seeking her former boyfriend amid the glamour and elegance of the night.

Elena and Caroline's faces were alight with joy and nostalgia as they found themselves in each other's presence once again. It had been such a long time since they'd been reunited. They had a lot of catching up to do, a process which would be facilitated by Caroline staying with the couple at the Salvatore's boarding house during her visit to Mystic Falls.
Truth be told, it had taken a lot of convincing from both Stefan and Elena to get Caroline to agree to stay at their place. Initially, she'd been hesitant, voicing concerns about intruding on the couple's cherished privacy and the possibility of walking in on intimate moments she just didn't need to witness. But Stefan and Elena, with a persistence born of affection, wore down her reservations. The winning argument had rested upon the transient nature of her stay in Mystic Falls and the importance to make the most of every single moment.
Thrilled to have her best friend back in the flesh and excited by the prospect of late-night conversations filled with confidences and laughter, Elena pulled Caroline into another hug. It was an embrace that was more than mere physical contact. It was an assertion of friendship, a reaffirmation of bonds that transcended time. "I missed you so much, Care."
"I missed you more."
"Impossible." Elena stated.
"I promise." Caroline insisted.
Their heartfelt exchange was interrupted by Stefan's clearing of his throat. The sound was a gentle reminder of his presence.
"Yes, Stefan, I missed you too." Caroline mumbled, faking an annoyed voice.
At her words, Stefan let out a false sigh of relief, his eyes twinkling with humor, and joined in on their laughter. It was a laughter synonymous with shared memories and understanding, a melody that only the three of them could fully comprehend. The bonds of friendship, tried and true, were reignited, promising many cherished moments in the days to come.

All eyes were momentarily drawn to the entrance as Klaus Mikaelson made his appearance in Carol Lockwood's grand ballroom. Dressed in an impeccably tailored tuxedo, he emanated a sense of timeless elegance that was uniquely his own. The deep black fabric of the suit seemed to absorb the ambient light, contrasting sharply with the crisp white of his dress shirt and his white tie.
His handsome face wore an expression of serene confidence, eyes glinting with an inscrutable blend of wisdom and mischief. The dark locks of his hair were carefully styled, framing his face in a way that only added to the allure of his striking features.
His lithe movements held a panther-like grace, commanding yet subtle, as he navigated the sea of elegantly clad guests. As he moved further into the room, Klaus's eye was instantly drawn to a tall, graceful figure standing near the buffet. Her hair was styled into elegant golden tresses and seemed to radiate with light. Her dress, a mesmerizing creation of golden silk and shimmering sequins, clung to her body like a second skin and accentuated her slender waist. The gold of the gown matched her blonde hair, creating a dazzling harmony that was both elegant and hypnotic.
Though he could only see her back, the magnetic pull in his chest left no room for doubt. This was Caroline Forbes, the woman who had haunted his dreams and daydreams for nearly a decade. Her angelic voice reached his ears as she spoke to Stefan and Elena, and Klaus found his breath catching in his throat.
Her presence, mere feet away, stirred an unusual mixture of nervousness and hesitance within him, emotions rarely associated with the Original Hybrid. Caroline's captivating allure never ceased to amaze him, arousing deep, human emotions that he had long thought buried.
Mustering all his self-confidence, Klaus slowly advanced towards Caroline. Two steps behind her, he softly spoke, "Good evening, love."
His voice sent a shockwave through Caroline's being. Had she still been human, she might have collapsed. Doubting her own senses, she turned around in slow motion, only to be greeted by Klaus' blue eyes. Her own slightly widened in shock, disbelief reflected in their depths.
Their eyes locked, and a sudden stillness enveloped them. The room around them seemed to vanish, leaving only the two of them in this intimate bubble of time and emotion. The mingling voices, the clinking of glasses and even the soft music surrounding them seemed to fade into the background.
Caroline's breath caught in her throat. She almost couldn't believe the moment was real. He looked extremely dashing in his tuxedo. His allure was not just in his appearance but in the very essence of his being, a complex tapestry woven of power, intellect, and a charisma that was undeniably, irresistibly Klaus. Everything about him was familiar yet impossibly distant, like a cherished memory suddenly sprung to life. His blue eyes, deep and earnest, were the same eyes that had once haunted her thoughts.
Klaus was not faring much better on his end. Seeing Caroline again after years apart was like walking into a hurricane of feelings, all fiercely vying for attention. He gazed at her in awe and wonder, rediscovering the soft features of her face.
After what felt like an eternity, Caroline managed to mutter, "Klaus?"
His response was a grin, broad and genuine. God, he loved the sound of his name on her lips.
Caroline stood, frozen, still unable to fully believe the reality before her. It was HIM. It was Klaus. His azure eyes, his tousled chestnut hair, his enticing lips, his magnetic presence, his natural, so annoying charm, the adoration she could perceive in his gaze… it was all so unmistakably Klaus.
After gazing at her for a moment, the beauty before him literally taking his breath away, Klaus bowed his head to her ever so slightly, "Caroline…" he breathed in a husky voice. "Will you do me the extraordinary honor of sharing a dance with me?"
And that was the fatal stroke. Hearing her name come out of his mouth, Caroline felt her knees weaken and quivers run down her spine. That way of uttering her name that was so peculiar to him made Caroline's heart race faster. It was a sound only he could create, a sound that was pure Klaus. In her twenty-five years of existence, Caroline had never heard anyone say her name with so much hoarseness and such tenderness at the same time… not quite like Klaus did.
The blonde broke their eye contact and half-turned around to face her friends. Stefan was simply staring at her, his face utterly impassive, seemingly awaiting her answer, while vexation was evident in Elena's fiery gaze.
Turning back to Klaus, Caroline's eyes flicked to the floor before she looked up at him once again, parting her lips to speak. Her response, though yet unspoken, hung heavily in the air between them, a silent testament to their complex history.
