The soft rays of the twilight morning came in through the window. Midna groaned softly as she stirred awake. She rolled over and draped her arm over her Hylian boyfriend. Link, having grown up as a farmer, was used to waking up early. He was usually up before his twilight girlfriend, buuut… said girlfriend had kept him up most of the night. The Hylian was pretty exhausted and still fast asleep.
He slept on his side, facing away from her. Midna smiled warmly and snuggled closer. She gently brushed his dirty blonde hair away from his face. It was such a pretty color of hair. Though blonde hair was common for Hylians in the light world, it was an uncommon color around here. Link definitely stood out, but she loved it.
She brushed the hair away from his pointed ear and he shivered slightly in his sleep. She giggled softly at his cute reaction. She leaned down and kissed his ear, then his jaw. She was being gentle so as not to wake him. Though, she wouldn't mind accidentally waking him.
The young man shifted slightly and his eyes finally cracked open. His piercing blue eyes looked up to meet her red ones. A soft smile played at his lips as he blinked slowly. He was still waking up and out of it.
"What a beautiful sunrise…" He muttered, being all cheesy as he reached up to play with one of her stay locks of orange hair. He twirled it around his finger lazily before bringing it to his lips and kissing it, "Have you been up long?"
Midna blushed deeply. Goodness, this man was such a dork. He always seemed to find ways to make her flustered. She huffed softly and pinched his cheek lightly, "No."
Link pouted at her as he released her hair. He expected maybe a smile or a goodmorning kiss. But nope, he just got pinching and bullying first thing in the morning. Honestly, why did he expect less from his Twili.
"Hey." He grumbled as he pulled away from her grasp. He rubbed his cheek and Midna could only roll her eyes. In a playful manner, though.
"Oh, don't be so dramatic, Mr. Hero." She teased as she sat up.
Link propped himself on his elbows, sitting up a bit, "I am not dramatic, dear princess." he said, mimicking her teasing tone. He watched the way Midna sat up straighter. It was like watching a bird puff up their feathers to appear bigger before fight.
Oh, how he loved getting under her skin.
She opened her mouth to snap back a witty comment, but Link took advantage of the perfect opportunity. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a tender kiss. She gasped softly in surprise, but was trying to appear unfazed. She began to lean away, not wanting to let the obnoxious elf get his way. Link moved his hand behind her head. He was gentle, but firm, not allowing her to pull away.
Midna could use her magic to break free if she really, truly wanted to… but she stayed put. Her eyes slipped closed and she wrapped her arms around him, returning the kiss. Link took that as silent permission and he carefully readjusted. Careful not to break their kiss, he pressed her back against their large bed. Link finally pulled back, smirking down at her. "Caught you."
Midna grumbled, "Well? Are you going to keep me waiting?"
He chuckled softly as he leaned in, nuzzling against her neck. His breath hit against her pale, blue-tones skin. The feeling almost made her shiver, "What are you doing, mutt?"
She whispered softly, playing with his hair. Link grumbled softly as he ran his rough hands along her sides, "I've told you I don't like that nickname…"
She chuckled, "Would you prefer 'puppy'?"
She gasped and covered her mouth when she felt his teeth sink into her flesh. She could tell he was trying to be gentle, but it still caught her by surprise. Link enjoyed her reaction and snaked an arm under her waist, "Move your hands. I want to hear you, princess…"
Midna blushed madly and moved her hands to cover his mouth, instead. "Only if you stop saying ridiculous things."
Link was grinning like a dork and Midna could tell by his bright eyes. This man was going to be the death of her…
After a rather productive morning, Link and Midna made their way to the dining hall for breakfast. They sometimes took their meals in their chambers or would go straight to the kitchen to prepare something for themselves. Today, they had royal duties to attend to, so a quick breakfast in the dining hall, then straight to meetings.
Midna glanced over at her Hylian boyfriend as he took a sip of his drink. She noticed his slight fatigue as he ate. An amused smile tugged at her lips, "Did I wear you out, dear hero?"
Link gave a small huff as he lowered his cup, "No." He blatantly lied as he cut his meat, mixing it in with his scrambled eggs, "I feel perfectly refreshed, princess."
Midna's smile grew into a smirk, which earned her a teasing glare from the hero. She chuckled and shook her head at him as she turned back to her own breakfast. Her boyfriend was such a stubborn ass. She grabbed the glass bottle of syrup to pour over her pancakes.
Link perked up slightly as he watched her prep her more sweet breakfast. He felt his mouth water and he glanced down at his own eggs and sausage before looking back over at her stack of pancakes. He didn't realize how he looked until Midna reached over and flicked his shoulder.
"You said you wanted a good protein breakfast. Stop with the puppy eyes." She scolded.
Link's ears twitched a little from her words, drooping slightly. Midna quickly had to avert her gaze from the sight. This guy… Link grumbled and leaned over to meet her gaze, "Oh, just a bite, Middy?"
Midna groaned and pushed her plate over towards him, "You are so annoying."
She said the harsh words, but didn't really mean it. Link also knew this. He was used to her attitude. He lit up and was way too giddy to cut into her pancakes. Midna crossed her arms as she waited for him to finish, but she followed his movement with warm eyes. Seeing him like this… All dorky and almost a childlike joy. She had really broken through his old stoic facade that she had first met over a year ago. They had been through so much together.
Her eyes lowered to his hands as he brought the fork to his mouth. She noticed the rough calluses and the small scars that covered them. Her gaze turned sad as she recalled all that he had gone through - all the things he didn't need to do. She reached over and took his rough hand with her softer one. Link turned his gaze to her, looking confused and tilting his head slightly, "Midna?"
She didn't say anything and brought his hand up to her lips. Link turned all red in a way that Midna adored. He stared at her as she leaned in and kissed his cheek, "I was just admiring you."
Link pulled his hand out of her grasp and looked away. He never knew how to react to affection like this! In the privacy of their bedroom, it was kind of a different story and he was able to be more confident. But out here in the open like this?! He ran his hands over his face, "You will be the death of me…"
He muttered it quietly, but Midna definitely heard it. She snickered and poked his cheek just to tease him a bit more. "So red." She whispered, "Can't handle a little payback from when you teased me earlier?"
Link huffed and lowered his hands, "We… We have m-meetings, Midna. Hurry and f-finish your breakfast."
Ah, there it is. His old stutter. Midna remembered how he rarely spoke on their adventure. She never understood why when they first met because the few times he did speak, he seemed to speak clearly. It wasn't until later she found out that Link stuttered terribly when he was nervous or flustered. To avoid possible embarrassment, especially since he was anti-social enough as it was, he preferred to stay quiet. But when he got more comfortable with Midna, she slowly broke out of his shell more and more. Midna found his stutter endearing, but she understood his hesitance with it around other people. She didn't mind being the only one to hear it, anyways. He had told her about how it used to be worse when he was younger. His mother would work extra hard with him, he remembered her patently helping him work on his stutter. However, with other kids teasing him and picking on him, he got into the habit of staying quiet. Even as he got older and his stutter was not nearly as bad as it used to, he preferred being more quiet.
"Oh, very well. I'll back off for now." She smiled gently and patted his head. Link sighed softly and turned back to his breakfast as he calmed down. Midna decided to stop teasing him and finished her breakfast as well.
As they stood, Midna grasped his arm gently and they walked together to their meetings. Midna paused and glanced down at her slightly shorter partner. He fell deep in thought as she mulled over everything from breakfast. It had been over a year since they first met, but they started officially dating right after their adventure. One year since she almost broke the Twilight Mirror before Link and Zelda had stopped her. Goodness, that could have been the worst mistake of her life if they hadn't stopped her. With the mirror still around, they were able to set up proper treaties, trades, and much more. One whole year… She gasped softly.
Their anniversary! She had completely forgotten it was coming up!
While sitting through the meetings, Midna was silently freaking out. Did Link remember the big day coming up? Was she the only one that forgot? Did she give him a gift? Should she get him a gift? Ugh! But what? She was a dang princess that could buy anything, but what did one get for the freaking Hero of Twilight?!
She groaned in the middle of the meeting and slid down in her chair. Her obvious annoyance was now apparent to the rest of the council. Link glanced over and paused before placing a hand on her knee. He leaned over and whispered, "Something wrong?"
Midna now noticed the other councilors looking at her strangely. Ah… They thought she was groaning about the meeting. She shook her head and sat up, "No, no. I'm sorry. Please continue."
Link didn't look so convinced, but he let it go. He gave her a soft nod and turned his attention back to the meeting. He didn't remove his hand. Thankfully, he was ambidextrous, so he was able to simply take notes with his other hand.
Midna began running through ideas of what to do for their anniversary. Maybe a vacation? Yeah, like Link hasn't traveled plenty yet… What should she do?
She didn't pay much attention to most of the meeting. She was grateful her boyfriend always took good notes on them. After the drawn out meeting finally came to a close, Link turned to his girlfriend and raised a brow. Midna noticed his gaze, but chose to ignore it. She turned away and stood, "Shall we go to my office and go over some paperwork and documents or whatever?"
Link gave a small huff and poked her cheek, "Midna."
He said only one word, but one was more than enough for Midna to know what he was meaning. He wanted to know what was wrong. She returned the huff and placed her hands on her hips, "It's nothing! Come on!"
Midna began to walk away. Link didn't follow her right away, watching her with a grumble. He wanted to know what was wrong! Midna threw a quick glance over her shoulder and noticed him standing there. He was so stubborn! She pouted and her fiery reddish-orange hair moved behind him. The end formed into a large hand and it pressed against his back. Link put his hands out in front of him to keep his balance. He dug his heels into the stone floor as Midna tried to push him forward.
Midna huffed, "Stop being so stubborn!"
Link made a small huffing noise, scoffing at her for having such nerve for calling HIM stubborn. He shook his head, determined to out-stubborn her. Sometimes this man drove Midna crazy in a good way, but right now… He was ACTUALLY driving her crazy.
She huffed and turned, just walking off. If she just kept walking, Maybe he would just follow. As Midna predicted, Link begrudgingly did follow. He trailed behind her like a pup. Midna found it amusing, but she didn't dare tease him about it.
Link finally spoke up after a bit when they were alone, "Midna, I was thinking of visiting the light world sometime soon. I'd love for you to come with me if you're able to. I know you're really busy with the kingdom and such."
Midna perked up and turned to him. She poked his cheek, "I'd love to come. We can make it a vacation of sorts! And even visit Princess Zelda."
Maybe her best friend would have some insights on when she could do for Link for their anniversary? Midna would often confide in Zelda since she was always so sharp and wise. Zelda was really something else. If Midna didn't love her so much, she'd probably almost be jealous. After defeating Ganondorf, there was a lot of gossip among Hyrule that Link and Zelda would surely get married.
Admittedly, Midna had to agree that they looked like such a… natural couple. Almost like they were made for each other. There had always been stories about the past heroes always ending up with the princess of destiny. So, honestly, they were basically soulmates in everyone's minds. That's why Midna had originally planned to leave, destroy the mirror, and never return. She wanted to give Link his happy ending with the princess.
But, from Zelda's mouth, she was told, "Some soulmates are platonic. I am eternally grateful for what Link has done, and I do feel as though I've already known him for years. But we also make our own destinies. Even if in a past life, we may have loved each other… but we live a new life now and walk a new path."
Link had firmly agreed, "My ancestor who trained me spoke of destiny, also. He didn't marry the princess in his life either. I don't even remember my past lives! Why should I allow those past heroes to determine my life!"
And so, Midna didn't destroy the mirror, she allowed Link to stay by her side, despite the rumors. Zelda had stayed true to her promise to stay their friend, specifically Midna's friend. Link enjoyed her company fine, but always acted stiff and awkward around her. Afterall, Link used to be nothing but a simple ranch hand, only hearing distant stories of the grand Princess Zelda. Meeting her and being her "friend" was almost like being casual with a celebrity. Link had somewhat loosened up a bit over the past year, though.
Link nodded at Midna's request, "Yes, the princess would probably be upset if we didn't visit her, huh?"
Midna snorted and nodded, ruffling his hair, much to his dismay, "I don't think we'd hear the end of it from her."
A vacation to the light world, huh? Maybe Midna could finally catch a break, and hopefully gain some much needed advice on what to get her boyfriend. Link was just impossible to shop for…
