Chapter 2 The Weight
One step…
Then another…
Then another…
Crunch crunch crunch the grass gave way to a path that crunched under Alex's feet. He swayed side to side as he slowly made his way closer to the clump of buildings ahead of him, running low on energy, feet in pain 'so much pain' he grimaces and keeps moving forward.
The path turns to stone as he enters the town properly, he stops and gets a good look around. People walk about seemingly unaware of his presence as he watches from a distance.
"Amp!" Alex jumps a bit, slowly looking over to the direction of the call. Standing there is a bipedal creature, its body was mostly yellow with black stripes on its cone shaped ears and pointy tail; its head and tail adorned with a red gem.
"Wha- huh what!" Alex stumbles back and falls over. The creature lets out a concerned "Ammmp" and tries to help the Teen stand up. Alex finches away from it still in a state of shock.
"Ampharos! What happened is he alright? "A young boy runs up to him and the now named Ampharos. "Hey there! Sorry about that, lemme help you up" grabbing Alex's hand he pulls him to his feet.
The boy was a head shorter than Alex, ruffled dark blue hair topped his head ' well I guess that's a thing then…' thought Alex dumbly as his gaze drifted back to stare at the Pokemon who was now seemingly bowing apologetically "I'm sorry if Ampharos scared you! Please forgive him!" Alex shakes himself from his stupor and gives the kid a shaky smile, "i-it's really no problem kid… I should've been paying more attention… yeah…" the kid seems to accept that answer and rubs the back of his head, letting out a chuckle as his did so. "I'm just glad you're alright! I'm Jason by the way! Are you new here? I haven't seen you around before… Oh! Are you a trainer?! How many Pokemon do you have?!" the kid, Jason, asks rapid fire.
Alex takes a second before responding "uhhh… sorry kid but I'm not a trainer I just got into town and… I'm not really sure where here is to be honest with you" Jason deflates for a second obviously disappointed by that answer before puffing his chest out with a new air of superiority, "well then, since you're new around here I'll let you know then" his says dramatically pointing his finger at Alex's face "Welcome to Vaniville Town!" he continues to hold that pose for a few seconds clearly expecting a reaction, Alex just continues to stare off into space ' what the hell… this is the starter town from XY! That means… I'm in Kalos?! What the hell is going on…' Alex sits down on the road and continues to space out, Jason waves his hand in front of Alex's face getting no reaction, he shrugs at Ampharos "I'm sure he'll be fine… c'mon Ampharos! We're gonna be home late!" Jason and Ampharos ran off leaving Alex once again, alone in the middle of Vaniville Town.
'Keep it together Alex, come on! You can do this! Just think… what the hell should I do now…' standing up his legs felt like jelly, fighting the urge to sit back down he starts walking, noticing more Pokemon milling about with their trainers. 'How the hell did I miss that on my way in… I must've been in one heck of a haze… yeah that's probably it, running around on nothing for adrenaline would probably do that to a person…'
Getting his thoughts in order Alex remembers the larger building he saw near the center of town, 'that's probably some kind of Pokemon center! Maybe… maybe they have someone there who can give me a hand!' after some walking, he could see the pokemon center dead ahead of him. It was as generic as they came, a marble white building with rounded accents highlighted with red and a giant Pokeball sign to finish it all off . 'Yep, that's a Pokemon center if I've ever seen one… that feels weird to say…' this whole situation was weird, waking up in the woods, pokemon being everywhere, not even being in his own world anymore? Alex tried to keep all of this at the back of his mind, there was time to process that later, right now he needed to rest.
'God… please let the Pokemon center have a room I can stay in for free… oh god do I need to be a trainer? Am I gonna have to sleep on the street?' Alex started to stress as he walked through the automatic doors of the Pokemon center, the sterile smell hit him like a wall and the bright white lights forced him to squint for a second. Once he recovered from the assault on his senses, he looked over to the service desk to see a pink haired woman in a stereotypical nurse outfit, Nurse Joy in the flesh.
"Welcome to the Vaniville Pokemon center! How can I help you today sir?" the nurse asks cheerfully. Walking up to the counter Alex clears his throat "y-yeah, I was wondering if I needed to be a trainer to stay the night here… is there a fee or something?" he asked timidly, the nurse looks at him with a sympathetic smile, "I just so happen to have some rooms available, follow me please" Alex follow Nurse Joy down the hall to the left of the desk, it was lined with numerous rooms with unintelligible text on the plaques next to the doors.
"Here we are, I hope the room is to your liking. Don't worry about check out times we aren't as strict as other Pokemon centers, not as many people tend to stay here in Vaniville…" Nurse Joy seemed a bit sad while saying that last bit…
Nurse Joy hands Alex a room key which he accepts with a smile, "thanks for this by the way… I'm working some stuff out right now and… I'm not really sure what to do next if I'm honest…" his smile quickly turns to a small frown as he explains his uneasiness to the nurse.
"Oh! You're on your way to Lumiose city, aren't you? You know young man, there's a couple of young trainers around here that are planning on starting their journey too! Maybe you can go as a group! Friends always make the journey more enjoyable and its always good to have people you can rely on!"
Alex waves his hands and shakes his head "oh! No, no as great as being a trainer would be that's not really my issue… I'm kind of… lost… I guess… haha" Alex lets out an awkward chuckle to deflect the hopelessness he felt 'yeah lost in another world! Out of all the things that could happen…'
Nurse Joy seemed confused "I'm not sure I understand? Do you not have a map? All Pokemon centers have complimentary trainer supplies we'll get you stocked up on anything you need in the morning!"
Alex… was at a loss, it would be too difficult to explain away how exactly he's lost with no way back even with a map… plus he was too tired. He simply smiled again "that sounds great, Thank you Nurse Joy that's a big help!"
After saying goodbye Alex then got settled into his room, it was quaint like any hotel room back home, clean white sheets on a wooden bed frame and a small table in the corner, a bathroom tucked away in the corner.
Alex flopped down on the bed finally able to rest.
Thanks for finishing the chapter, it's honestly so nice to see people actually being interested in my mental illness runoff
