„You are what?" Bella asked, her eyes unbelieving.
„Pregnant…", her daughter replied, smiling uncertainly.
They were seated opposite each other, Jacob and Bella and Sara and Edward. The others were outside, giving the family some privacy.
Jacob frowned. „But how…" He looked at Edward, who seemed miserable enough and raised his shoulders. „I don't know. We don't know. It's a mystery and a miracle."
„So… A child, half werewolf and half vampire?"
„Like me,'' her daughter replied, trying to lift the mood.
„Yes, but you were made a vampire, not born one. Can there be a born vampire? I mean, vampires are…"
„Dead," Edward finished Jacobs' sentence for him. „But this child definitely lives. We had multiple scans already and it has a steady heartbeat and started to move recently. The only thing is that Sara needs more blood and isn't able to phase, maybe due to the foetus."
Now it was Bella's turn to frown. „You don't phase? You didn't tell us that."
Sara shrugged. „It's not that I can't. It's more like the baby doesn't want me to. Maybe it hurts him or her."
„This is too much," Jacob said suddenly, pinching his nose with his fingers. „I've just gotten used to the idea that you are part vampire and part werewolf and now there is a child involved?"
Edward nodded, seeming equally exhausted. „Seems that way, yes."
Bella looked at her daughter. „You didn't tell me you were… dating."
„Well, it didn't come up. Besides, what's wrong with that? We've been living together for over a year now and he's always been there for me, from the moment I opened my eyes as a Newborn. He helped me through everything and has always been by my side when things seemed too difficult to handle. It was inevitable that I fell in love with him, eventually."
Edward didn't know if he should be thrilled that she said that she loved him or if he should be taken aback by her meaning that it was inevitable. Like it was more a task completed than actual feelings that had evolved over time. He exchanged a look with Bella and Jacob and slightly shook his head. She doesn't know
And never will, sounded Jacob's reply in his head. On this, Edward agreed with him. The situation was complicated enough already without her knowing about his past with her parents, especially her mother.
„So, what do we do now?" Jacob asked suddenly. „I mean, what can we do, except wait and hoping for the best."
His daughter shrugged. „Wait and hoping for the best. And maybe buy some cute baby outfits." Her try at lifting the mood didn't do what she had hoped. Everyone in the room remained tense and on the edge. They all seemed to think the worst and Sara had enough. „Don't be like that. It still is a baby, and we should at least try to be happy about it. I mean, you are going to be grandparents, isn't that exciting? Yeah, I know there are so many questions without answers, so many things we don't know, but it does us no good to only dwell on them. We should focus on the baby. Until now it's doing exactly what every baby does. It grows and moves and has a heartbeat. Isn't that a good sign?" She looked at Edward but his attempt at a smile failed completely.
Edward was completely out of his depth. While it was weird enough to have a baby with the daughter of the woman he had once loved now there were all the questions, above all: Will it be alright?
He had tried to be happy about it, tried to see the good side like his mother and Sara, but he just couldn't. And he noticed that Bella and Jacob couldn't either.
Of course, Sara had noticed his lack of enthusiasm, and it had led to the first fight they had. She accused him of not believing in a good outcome and he had known that she was right. He didn't even defend himself which made her leave him and go straight into the woods where she had stayed all night.
The next day she had gone baby shopping with his mother, as if to prove a point. It was way too early for it, but she wanted to do it anyway, just to show him what he still couldn't believe, no matter how hard he tried. She had chosen a spare room which had previously functioned as a guest room (not that they ever had guests but anyway). Emmet and Jasper had helped move the furniture out while Rosalie and Alice had cleaned it up before they put in the baby stuff. They even had painted it, a cheery yellow with little animals and rainbows which Rosalie had drawn. When Sara had offered to help, they had refused, telling her to rest. Since the announcement of the pregnancy, the whole family treated her like she was made of glass. Sara could understand why but it was still annoying. She was strong and so was her baby, but it still was a baby in a family of vampires, nothing they had ever dreamed of having. Esme had taken up the grandmother role with great enthusiasm while Alice and Rosalie already fought over who would hold the baby first when it arrived. Emmet had declared his intention of teaching the child to play vampire baseball at which point she had left the room with a groan and a headache.
And now she was here, in a room with the most important people in her life and none of them was willing to share her happiness and hope for a good outcome.
Why can't you be happy? She asked Edward mentally, not wanting to let her parents hear. If they see us both happy and excited, they will be too, eventually.
He could only shoot her an unhappy look which made her frown and turn away. „I'll leave you to your gloomy thoughts then. Tell me when you are finished and ready to see the good rather than the bad." With that, she stood up and left the room before any of them could stop her.
Edward sighed. If he had not known that vampires couldn't get a headache, he would be sure that he had one right now.
He found her sitting in the nursery on a rocking chair, a stuffed teddy bear in her lap, deep in thought. She didn't look up, but he knew that she had noticed him.
„I'm sorry," he told her. Again.
I know you are. You already told me several times
„Can't you understand? I'm really trying to be like you, to see the bright side, to be sure of a good outcome, but this is all so much. Nothing about this is natural or certain. Nobody knows anything because something like this has never happened before. I simply don't know what to do and it's driving me crazy." He raked a hand through his hair and looked at her with his golden eyes.
Of course I understand you. Do you think that I don't feel uncertain? That I'm not afraid that something will go wrong? That something bad will happen to our baby? But unlike you I focus on the good things, like the fact that we are going to have a baby. But I feel like you don't even want this child
„And what if I don't? Sara, I really, really love you, so, so much but this child? What if it hurts you in some way? I could never forgive myself if this happened."
The look she gave him was but pure sadness. Not even anger, just pure and simple sadness. Without another word or thought she stood up, carefully placed the stuffed toy on the rocking chair and left the room. More than anything, this showed him how much he had hurt her. And he had no idea how to fix it.
