Kuri wandered through the bustling streets of True Cross Town, the air buzzing with the chatter of students and townsfolk alike. The evening sun cast long shadows, painting the cobblestone streets in shades of gold and orange. She adjusted the strap of her bag, pausing to admire the lively energy of the town when a sudden scream shattered the peaceful atmosphere.
Her head snapped toward the sound, and her heart raced as she spotted a boy about her age being thrown across the street, landing with a heavy thud against a lamppost. A hulking creature loomed over him, its grotesque form twisted with jagged claws and glowing red eyes.
Kuri gasped, her breath hitching in her throat. That boy—she recognized him. Black hair, sharp features, and piercing blue eyes. Rin Okumura? She'd seen him around the academy, usually with a lopsided grin and a carefree attitude. But now, he looked anything but carefree.
Without thinking, she sprinted toward him, adrenaline drowning out her fear. The monster roared, lunging for Rin, but Kuri slid to his side and hauled him out of harm's way, her pulse pounding in her ears.
"Ouch!" she panted, pulling him to his feet. "Are you okay?"
Rin groaned, his voice strained. "Y-Yeah. What about you?"
"I-I think so," she replied shakily, brushing dust off her sleeves. Her eyes fell on a long object wrapped in a red cloth lying a few feet away. "That—it fell off your back."
"Oh! Thanks," Rin said, grabbing the sword and slinging it over his shoulder. He studied her with concern. "You're not hurt, are you?"
"I don't think so," Kuri said, checking herself for injuries. A deep scratch along her arm stung, but it didn't seem serious. "It barely missed me—"
The creature shrieked, cutting her off. Its clawed hand swiped toward them, grazing Kuri before suddenly recoiling. The monster thrashed violently, emitting guttural howls as it clawed at its own body.
Kuri stared in shock as the creature frantically tried to wipe away the blood on its skin. Her blood. Her eyes widened when she noticed the silvery sheen dripping from the wound on her arm.
"What the—" she murmured, running her fingers through the strange metallic liquid.
"Kuri, get back!" Rin shouted, stepping between her and the monster. He unsheathed the blade from the red cloth, the steel glinting ominously in the fading sunlight. "Hey! Leave her alone!"
"No, don't!" Kuri cried, reaching for him. "Rin, that monster—it'll kill you!"
He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder at her, confusion flickering in his eyes. "You think it's a monster?"
"I… I…" Kuri backed away, trembling. Her voice cracked with emotion. "It—it hurt me. That's why it's a monster. I don't care what it looks like. It's a monster because of what it chose to do."
Rin's grip on the sword tightened, her words sinking into him. A flicker of sadness crossed his face as he let out a deep breath and unsheathed the blade completely. His body ignited in a brilliant blue flame, horns sprouting from his head as his tail unfurled.
Kuri froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Rin…" she whispered, her voice tinged with disbelief.
"I'm not a monster," Rin said firmly, his eyes glowing with fiery determination. "I'm a demon. There's a difference."
With that, he launched himself at the creature, his movements a blur of flame and steel. Kuri's heart raced as she watched him fight, his every strike blazing with raw power.
But her chest tightened when she saw the demon shift its focus, circling around Rin for a surprise attack.
"Rin, look out!" she screamed, her hands flying out instinctively. A surge of energy erupted from her palms, a wave of silver light crashing into the creature. It let out a deafening wail as it disintegrated into ash, the light consuming it completely.
Kuri stood there, her hands still trembling, as the silver energy faded. Her knees felt weak, but she rushed to Rin's side, wrapping her arms around him tightly.
"Rin! Are you okay?" she asked, her voice breaking. "I was so scared!"
He hugged her back for a moment before pulling away to study her, his expression a mixture of awe and confusion. "Kuri… Did you just—how did you do that?"
Kuri stared at her hands, the faint shimmer of silver energy still lingering in her palms. "I… I'm a priestess," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've never used my powers like that before. I didn't even know I could."
Rin's lips twitched into a small smile, though his eyes still held uncertainty. "By the way," she added, her tone lightening. "You make an awesome… mon—demon. Is that right? You're a demon?"
"Yes," Rin said, his voice steady but filled with quiet resolve. "I'm a demon. Not a monster."
For a moment, the world seemed to fade around them as they stood there, the faint hum of silver energy mingling with the glow of blue flames.
And for the first time, Kuri saw not a demon, but a boy who had chosen to protect, despite what he was.
