The forest seemed to stretch endlessly around Rin as he guided his horse through the dense undergrowth, the fading sunlight casting long shadows across the mossy ground. His crimson eyes scanned the area, searching for the telltale white moss he knew would lead him to the Sun Flower's root. It wasn't the flower itself, but a remnant of its power—a faint echo of the sunlight's magic.
Finally, he dismounted, his boots crunching softly against the ground. Kneeling, Rin brushed away the moss, revealing the root beneath. With practiced precision, he sliced off a piece and examined it closely, the faint golden sheen glimmering in the fading light.
"Just like stars," he murmured, a wistful smile playing on his lips. "Sun Flower."
But before he could pocket his find, a voice cut through the quiet.
"Help! Please, help!"
Rin's ears perked, and he stood abruptly, his hand instinctively going to the hilt of his sword. The cry for help was faint but desperate, carried on the breeze. Without hesitation, he sheathed the root in his satchel and followed the sound, pushing through the thick undergrowth until he reached a clearing.
There, silhouetted against the fading sky, stood a tall tower. It rose impossibly high, its stone walls weathered with age and overgrown with creeping vines. A window near the top was flung open, and a voice called down to him.
"Up here! Please!"
Rin squinted, his heart pounding as he caught sight of a young woman leaning out of the window. Her golden hair glowed like a beacon in the twilight. For a moment, Rin froze, unable to look away. Something about her was magnetic, as if she were the answer to a question he hadn't realized he'd been asking his entire life.
Summoning his resolve, Rin made his way to the base of the tower, where an extraordinary queue of golden hair hung down like a rope. He tested its strength, then began his ascent, his tail flicking for balance as he climbed. The journey was arduous, and by the time he pulled himself through the window, he was panting.
The girl stepped back, her wide blue eyes fixed on him in awe. "You're… you're the first person I've seen in such a long time," she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of wonder and fear.
Rin straightened, catching his breath as he studied her. She was beautiful, her fair skin glowing faintly in the dim light, her golden hair spilling around her like liquid sunlight.
"How long have you been up here?" Rin asked.
She hesitated, her hands clutching at her skirt. "I've lost count of the years," she said softly. "Are you… a prince?"
Rin laughed, scratching the back of his head. "Not really. Sort of, I guess. What about you? Are you a princess?" His gaze flicked to the tiara resting on a nearby table.
"Sort of," she said with a small, hesitant smile. "My name is Cairstiana. My parents are the king and queen of my realm. They were great leaders, adored by the people."
"Were?" Rin asked, his curiosity piqued.
Cairstiana's smile faltered. "I never wanted to lead. That was my brother's role—he was the heir. But then… something terrible happened."
Rin's expression softened. "I'm sorry. I can't imagine losing Yukio like that."
Cairstiana's gaze dropped to the floor. "After his death, something inside me changed. I couldn't sleep. Nightmares haunted me. And then… the Sun Flower started calling to me."
"You came here for the Sun Flower?" Rin asked, his tone sharpening.
She nodded. "Yes. My mother had used its magic to save me when I was born, but as I grew older, I grew weaker. I thought… I thought if I could find more of it, I could save myself. But it was a mistake."
Her voice broke, and Rin instinctively placed a hand on her shoulder. "What happened?"
"A wizard found me," she whispered. "He chased me to this tower and trapped me here. He said I had power he needed. He said he was my father."
Rin's jaw tightened. "You mean Satan." He took a deep breath, trying to calm the fire rising in his veins. "You don't have to worry about him anymore. I'll get you out of here. But first, I need to show you something."
He reached into his satchel and pulled out the Crown of Gehenna. The sight of it seemed to take her breath away.
"This belonged to my mother," Rin said. "I think it belongs to you now."
As he handed it to her, the room seemed to change. The golden light in Cairstiana's hair flared, illuminating the tower in a radiant glow. The paintings on the walls came alive, their colors dancing in the golden light. But as the light grew brighter, it turned silver, a sharp and otherworldly hue that made Rin's chest tighten.
Cairstiana's eyes shone with silver light as she looked at the ashes of a man who had been sacrificed in the tower. Her voice, steady and filled with power, echoed through the room.
"Wither and decay
End this destiny
Break these earthly chains
And set the spirit free."
The silver light surged, swirling around the ashes. Rin felt its pull, a sharp pain in his chest as the light tore through him. He staggered, his flames flickering weakly.
"Cairstiana," he choked out, struggling to stay upright. "Stop!"
His hand reached out, brushing her arm just as the tiara clattered to the floor. The silver light dimmed, and the room fell silent.
The man, now revived, cried out and leapt from the tower, climbing down to freedom.
"I saved him," Cairstiana whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm not a monster, am I?"
Rin straightened, his flames flickering to life once more. "No," he said softly, his voice full of conviction. "You're not a monster."
But as she looked at him, her eyes widened in horror. "You are."
Rin froze, realizing too late that his demonic form had manifested. His tail lashed behind him, his fangs bared. He took a step back, willing himself to return to normal.
"I'm the monster," he said bitterly, his voice low. "Not you."
As the tension hung heavy between them, the candles in the room suddenly went out. Cairstiana's head snapped toward the window, her face pale.
"It's too late," she whispered. "He knows you're here."
Rin followed her gaze, his hand tightening on the hilt of his sword. Outside, a hooded figure was ascending the tower, its golden cloak shimmering like the Sun Flower itself.
"Stay behind me," Rin said, his voice low but firm. "I'll protect you."
And for the first time in years, Cairstiana felt hope.
