The next morning, Kai stood before Makarov's office door. His knuckles hovered for a moment over the surface before he knocked.
"Come in," Makarov's voice called from inside.
Kai entered, before stopping right in front of Makarov's desk, his hands hiding into his jacket pockets as usual.
"What brings you here so early, Kai?" Makarov asked, setting aside the paperwork he'd been reviewing.
"I need two weeks," Kai said, his voice steady and determined. "Two weeks for some preparation. After that, I'm going to Valaris."
Makarov's expression remained neutral, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Going directly for him then?"
"Yes." Kai's shoulders tensed. "This has to end. What happened to Wendy..." He paused, collecting himself. "I won't stand Finn targeting the guild to get to me. This isn't possible anymore."
"And you've made this decision on your own?"
"It's my responsibility," Kai replied. "I won't accept anyone else getting hurt because of my past with Finn. Two weeks is all I'm asking for."
Makarov's smile spread across his face. "Perhaps you should ask them first," he said, nodding toward something behind Kai.
He turned around to find Natsu, Erza, Gray, Lucy, Mirajane, and several other guild members crowding the doorway.
"Two weeks?" Natsu cracked his knuckles. "That's more than enough time to get ready to kick their ass!"
The others nodded in agreement. Gray smirked, while Lucy gave him an encouraging smile.
And this time, Kai walked straight up to Natsu, extending his fist. Natsu broke into a huge grin, meeting Kai's fist with his own.
"Training starts today." Kai declared, a spark of electricity flashing through his eyes.
The energy in the room shifted as everyone's faces lit up with determination. Even Makarov's expression softened at the sight of Kai finally accepting his own place in the guild.
A week into their preparation, the Fairy Tail training grounds looked like a war zone. Craters dotted the earth, trees cut in half, and scorch marks painted the ground in dark patches.
Kai leaned against a boulder, catching his breath after another sparring session with Gray. Despite his injuries having healed, his magic reserves weren't cooperating. He could use his magic, but for a shorter period of time. Porlyusica did say if was temporary, he just had to be patient.
"You're pushing too hard," Erza said, approaching with water.
Kai accepted it with a nod. "I'm fine. I won't be getting rest in Valaris anyways"
Across the field, Natsu and Gray were going at it full force, their magic clashing in explosive bursts of fire and ice. Lucy worked with her celestial spirits nearby.
"Look who's back," Gray called out, pausing his fight with Natsu.
Wendy bounced down the path toward them. She'd recovered quickly, showing no signs of her recent encounter with the mysterious attacker. Her cheerful energy lifted everyone's spirits as she joined them.
Everyone was relieved to see she had fully healed up. She made her way to Kai, who simply placed his hand on her head in a gentle pat, a faint smile crossing his face.
Mirajane stepped forward, gently pulling Kai aside while the others chatted with Wendy about her recovery. Once they were out of earshot, she fixed him with one of her knowing looks.
"You know, you're not fooling anyone," she said with a slight tease in her voice. "We've all seen you fight before. These training sessions... you're holding back."
"What?" Kai tucked his hands into his jacket pockets.
"Everyone here knows about your magic now - what you really are," Mirajane continued. "So why not show us what you can really do?"
Kai flinched slightly, caught off guard that she had noticed. He hadn't expected anyone to pick up on it, especially not Mirajane.
He let out a deep sigh, "It's not that simple. I've spent years hiding what I can do. Even now, knowing everyone here knows about it..." He gestured vaguely at the training grounds. "Training alone was hard enough. Always checking over my shoulder, making sure no one was watching. Here? With everyone around? I just need more time."
Mirajane poked his chest with her index finger, "Time? You mean the two weeks YOU decided was enough? That's your stupid idea, mister."
Kai eyebrow twitched, opened his mouth to protest but closed it again, knowing she had a point.
"Tell you what," Mirajane said, her voice softening. "Why don't you and I head deeper into the forest clearings? Just us. You can show me what you're really capable of." She gestured toward the tree line. "It would be a good starting point, wouldn't it?"
Kai's jaw dropped at Mirajane's suggestion. "That's not... I mean, I can't just..." he stammered, taking a step back.
But when he looked up, he flinched at the sight of her smile. That sweet expression that promised trouble if challenged.
"Oh, I don't think you understood," she said, her voice honey-sweet but leaving no room for argument. "That wasn't actually a question. You're going to follow me into those woods, and you're going to show me exactly what you can do."
She turned on her heel, already walking toward the tree line. After a few steps, she glanced over her shoulder, her smile still in place. "Coming?"
Kai's shoulders fell in defeat. He'd heard stories about Mirajane's demonic side. With a resigned sigh, he pushed off from the boulder and followed her into the woods.
Kai let out a sigh, finally reaching a clearing Mira was happy with. She had found a place safer from curious eyes, perfect for him.
"So, I'll sit here and just watch. You just do whatever, and remember" Mira smiled to Kai, "If you hold back I'll know"
Kai gulped, starting to think Mira was way more dangerous than what he anticipated. But weirdly, his body didn't seem to mind that much of her presence. He took a deep breath, readying himself.
But behind a large bush, three figures huddled together, watching Kai's distant form.
"Ow! Happy, your tail is in my face," Wendy whispered, trying to shift position.
"Sorry! But Carla keeps pushing me," Happy complained, his blue fur ruffled.
Carla huffed, her white paws crossed. "Well, if you hadn't insisted on bringing that fish with you..."
"I might get hungry during surveillance!" Happy protested, clutching his wrapped fish closer.
The bush rustled as they adjusted positions again. Wendy ended up with leaves in her hair while Happy somehow got tangled in a low branch.
"This is ridiculous," Carla muttered. "We're supposed to be watching Kai, not creating a circus act."
"Shh!" Wendy put her finger to her lips. "He might hear us."
Happy's stomach growled loudly.
"Don't you dare eat that fish now," Carla warned.
"But-"
"No buts!"
Their whispered argument caused more movement in the bush, making it shake noticeably. "Just one bite?" Happy pleaded, unwrapping his fish.
"Happy!" both Wendy and Carla whispered-shouted in unison.
Kai's eyes darted to his side, where the bush continued its suspicious dance of rustling leaves and whispered arguments. He'd noticed them following him since he left the guild, their attempts at stealth about as subtle as Natsu in the guild hall.
He kept his face neutral, continuing his preparation while pretending not to hear Happy's increasingly desperate pleas about fish. He had no doubt Mira also knew about them.
Wendy's presence was fine for him. Like Mira, they were the two members he appreciated the most, after spending so much time with them during his recovery. Adding to it, their gentle care and constant check-ups had somehow helped him alot around the early days of him being in an official guild.
So he let Wendy be, pretending not to notice their presence. It was easier than confronting them.
Kai rolled his shoulders, feeling the familiar crackle of electricity dance across his skin. "Alright, here goes" he muttered, his jacket moved with him as he raised one of his hand, like conducting an invisible orchestra.
"Blade Serenade," he whispered. Azure blades of lightning materialized around him, hovering in circles. With graceful movements of his hands, the blades danced through the clearing, slicing clean through branches and leaving scorch marks on rocks.
Following up, Kai faced a cluster of boulders. His mouth opened, and "ThunderHawk Screech" burst forth. A concentrated wave of blue lightning and sound blasted from his lips, the shock wave powerful enough to crack the stones. The sound echoed around, similar to a Hawk's cry.
Without pausing, he raised his right hand. "Storm Feathers: Piercing Rain!" A swirling cloud of electric blue feathers formed above him. He clenched his fist, before the feathers rained down like deadly arrows, embedding themselves in trees and ground before exploding in small bursts of lightning.
Turning toward another large rock, Kai's fist sparked with intense energy. "Kirin's Claw!" Three distinct claws of lightning formed around his hand. He struck the boulder, shattering it with a powerful impact.
For his final display, Kai moved in a blur of azure light. He dashed between trees, leaving trails of crackling debris in his wake. Back in his starting position, he opened his palm, whispering "Blue Web". The scattered energy connected, forming a web of lightning between the trees, pulsing once before detonating.
Mirajane stood motionless, her eyes wide as she watched the smoking trees. This wasn't just lightning magic - it was a form of art, a deadly dance that flowed like water yet struck like thunder.
In their hiding spot, Wendy's mouth hung open in awe. The magic reminded her of the raw power of dragons, yet distinctly different.
"Such control," Carla whispered, unable to take her eyes off the clearing
Mirajane finally smiled - this was Kai Dawson, the ThunderHawk. And seeing it up close, understanding the sheer beauty of his magic, made her realize why he'd kept it hidden for so long.
"It's beautiful," Wendy breathed, leaves forgotten in her hair as she watched the last traces of blue energy fade from the air.
They all saw Kai bent slightly forward, hands on his knees as he caught his breath. His recent injuries clearly took their toll on his stamina.
But a sound none of them had heard from him before. A quiet chuckle escaped his lips as he straightened up.
"That... felt good," he said to himself, a hint of satisfaction in his voice.
Mirajane walked toward Kai, her steps light and purposeful. "See? That wasn't so hard, was it?" Her smile was gentle as she gestured at the clearing. "Your magic is beautiful, Kai. You shouldn't hide it."
Kai shifted uncomfortably at the praise, finally catching his breath. Before he could respond, Mira's voice took on a playful tone.
"And speaking of hiding..." She turned toward the suspicious bush, placing her hands on her hips. "I think our little spies should come out now. Stalking people isn't very nice, you know."
Behind the foliage, Wendy, Happy, and Carla flinched simultaneously. The bush rustled one final time as they emerged, heads down.
"We're sorry," Wendy mumbled, still picking leaves from her hair.
"Aye..." Happy agreed.
Carla tried maintaining some dignity. "We were merely concerned about Kai's training progress."
Wendy hurried after Kai, her eyes still bright with amazement. "That was incredible! The way your lightning moved like it was alive, and those feathers-"
"We knew you were there the whole time," Mirajane interrupted gently, exchanging a knowing look with Kai.
Kai nodded, his usual stoic expression softened slightly. "I heard Happy's fish crisis from the start."
"You... let us stay?" Wendy blinked, surprised.
"Of course he did," Mirajane said. "Kai's not as bad as he tries looking like" she added with a mocking smile.
Kai stuffed his hands in his pockets, looking away. "We should head back," Mirajane suggested, noting how the afternoon light had started to fade. "The others will be wondering where we disappeared to."
As they started walking back toward the training grounds, Kai felt surprisingly good. Maybe it wasn't that bad, using his abilities to help people he was beginning to trust.
The remaining week rushed by at Fairy Tail. Each day, Kai returned to the forest clearing with Mirajane and Wendy - the girls proved to be excellent training partners. Mira's demon form could withstand his strongest attacks, while Wendy's support magic helped them recover faster.
But as the final day approached, tension crept back into Kai's shoulders. Two weeks had felt like an eternity and a few hours at the same time.
That morning, Kai walked into the guild hall early. The time had come to end this. He found Makarov already at the bar, as if expecting him.
"It's time," Kai said simply.
Makarov nodded, taking a slow sip from his mug. "They're ready. All of them."
As if on cue, guild entrance shifted with movement. Team Natsu entered first, followed by Mirajane, Wendy, Elfman, Juvia, Gajeel, and several other members.
Natsu's fists collided, his grin spreading wide across his face. "I've got a date with Marcus. His head's gonna make a real nice wall decoration when I'm done."
"Speaking of unfinished business," Gajeel cracked his knuckles, a metallic gleam in his red eyes, "I still remember how good it felt when my boot connected with that muscle mountain's ugly mug. Wouldn't mind a second round."
Gray stepped forward, his expression cold. "And I've got something to settle with Thea. She's not getting away this time."
The gathered mages parted as Kai walked between them. Without turning back, he exited the guild.
"We're going to Valaris," Kai announced, his voice carrying through the silence. "Let's do this."
The group approached the city under a blazing sun, it's walls stretching ahead.
"So what's the plan?" Gray asked, breaking the tense silence.
"Plan? We don't need a plan!" Natsu pumped his fist in the air. "We go in, we beat them up, we win!"
Several knowing glares shot his way. Lucy sighed, while Erza shook her head with familiar exasperation.
But to everyone's surprise, Kai nodded. "Natsu's right."
"What?" Lucy's eyes widened.
"Just get inside," Kai said, his voice carrying an edge they hadn't heard before. "You can handle Marcus and his crew however you want. But Finn..." His eyes narrowed. "Finn's mine."
The group exchanged uncertain glances. This wasn't the calculated Kai they'd come to know - the one who planned every detail, who always stayed three steps ahead. And Erza knew it.
Mirajane studied Kai's face carefully. Was this really his strategy? Or was there more beneath the surface? The thought made her uneasy. Mira was known to be eased with reading people, but right now, his expression gave away nothing.
"You sure about this?" she asked quietly.
Kai just kept walking, his eyes fixed on the city ahead.
Suddenly, a dagger struck the ground with a metallic sound, stopping Kai mid-step. His eyes narrowed as he recognized the curved blade with its distinctive silver hilt.
"I was wondering when you'd show up," he muttered.
The air shimmered, and Marcus materialized twenty feet ahead of them, his illusion magic dissolving to reveal Thea and Grunt flanking him. Thea cocked her hip, a mocking smile playing on her lips.
"Missed me, little bird?" she purred, her dark eyes finding Gray. "And look who's here for round two."
Gray's fists clenched, frost spreading across his knuckles. The memory of their last encounter was still fresh in his mind.
Grunt cracked his massive knuckles, grinning with his gap-toothed smile at the assembled Fairy Tail members. "Break fairies," he rumbled.
"Quite the crowd you've brought, Kai," Marcus observed, his tone casual. "I suppose getting beaten half to death wasn't enough of a lesson about dragging others into your mess?"
The Fairy Tail mages tensed, magic beginning to swirl around them. "Your fight's with me," Kai stepped forward, electricity crackling around him.
"Oh no," Thea laughed, drawing another blade. "Our fight's with all of you now. Fairy Tail made their choice when they harbored Blue Bird."
Kai let out a deep sigh, his shoulders relaxing slightly. Thea's words had confirmed exactly what he'd been waiting to hear - they weren't just after him anymore. They had a bone to pick with Fairy Tail too.
He turned slowly, looking over his shoulder at his guildmates. "They're yours to handle now. Good luck." A faint smile crossed his face. "And... thanks."
Before anyone could react, he vanished in a flash of lightning.
"Kai!" Mirajane called out, but he was already gone.
Marcus's face twisted with anger as he spun toward Valaris. "You're not going anywhere-"
His words cut off as Natsu's flaming fist connected with his jaw, sending him stumbling backward. The Fire Dragon Slayer had closed the distance in seconds, with fierce determination.
The other Fairy Tail members stood frozen for a moment, uncertain about Kai's sudden departure. Natsu whirled around to face them, flames still dancing around his fists.
"What are you all standing around for?" he shouted. "Kai left these guys to us because he knows we can take them! He's trusting us to win! So move it !"
Gray and Gajeel exchanged a knowing glance before breaking into matching grins. They charged forward, following Natsu's lead as the group split into teams.
Gajeel cracked his knuckles as he squared up against Grunt, with Lucy reaching for her keys beside him. "Let me fix back that face of yours. You look like trash"
Across them, Natsu and Erza faced off against Marcus, whose illusion magic was already starting to twist the air around them. Natsu's flames burned bright.
Gray and Mirajane circled Thea, who twirled her daggers with deadly grace. Ice magic crystallized around Gray's arms while Mira's Satan Soul transformation rippled through her body.
"Stay back and support us, Wendy!" Erza called out as she requipped into her Heaven's Wheel armor.
Wendy nodded, already beginning her enchantments. "Arms! Armor! Vernier!" Her magic wrapped around her guildmates, enhancing their abilities.
As she engaged Thea in combat, Mira's expression darkened. "That idiot better not do anything stupid," she muttered.
Kai crouched at the top of a roof, looming above Valaris. His eyes never left the palace, wind slightly brushing against his hair. The sight of the building brought back memories he'd rather forget, but there was no turning back now.
The palace guards seemed oddly relaxed, which only made Kai more suspicious. Either Marcus had pulled most of them away for an ambush, or Finn was setting an obvious trap. Neither option was particularly comforting.
If Finn wasn't in the palace, then Kai had would have idea where he could be, also meaning he would have left FairyTail fighting alone for nothing. But it was a coin flip he was willing to take. And knowing Finn, Kai was certain he was waiting for him.
He flexed his fingers, the sound of distant explosions echoed from where he'd left his guildmates fighting. Kai's jaw clenched, but he didn't turn around. He had to trust them, just as they'd trusted him.
Back at the city entrance, Team Natsu and their guildmates faced off against Marcus's crew. Dust settled from their initial clash, revealing the two sides sizing each other up.
Thea stepped forward, her black bodysuit gleaming in the sunlight. Her eyes locked onto Gray and Mirajane.
"Well, if it isn't the boy who couldn't even protect his friend," Thea's lips curled into a cruel smile. "And who are you, a demon ? You don't look that scary."
"You're the one who tortured Kai," Gray's voice was cold as ice. "I won't let that slide, nobody hurts our friends."
Thea laughed, the sound sharp and mocking. "Friends? He's been alone for years. You think a few weeks makes you his friends?" She flicked her wrist, and shadows began pooling at her feet. "Let me show you what real power looks like."
The shadows shot forward like spears, forcing Gray and Mirajane to dodge in opposite directions. Thea's attack left deep marks in the ground, where they had stood a few seconds ago.
Dark tendrils of magic writhed around Thea's arms as she faced her opponents. She launched another barrage at Gray, the shadows seeming like living weapons. But this time, Gray stood his ground. His devil slayer magic manifested in a burst of dark purple ice, meeting the shadow attack head-on. He managed to clear the attack out.
"Last time," Gray said, ice crystals forming around his right arm, "I was out of magic." A cold smirk spread across his face as he took his stance. "Big mistake thinking I'd be that easy to beat me twice."
Thea's eye twitched in annoyance. She reached for the blades at her hip, coating them in shadow magic. But before she could strike, a massive blast of dark energy forced her to leap backwards.
Mirajane, now in her Satan Soul form, hovered above the battlefield.
Thea's expression darkened as she faced both opponents. Her fingers tightened around her shadow-coated blades, betraying her growing frustration. These Fairy Tail mages weren't the pushovers she'd expected.
"Two against one?" she spat. "Is that how your pathetic guild fights?"
Gray and Mirajane exchanged a quick glance, their stance relaxed but ready. Mira's demonic aura pulsed with dark energy.
"You didn't seem to mind those odds when you were torturing Kai," Mirajane's voice carried a dangerous edge, her demon form's eyes glowing with rage.
Their confidence only seemed to irritate Thea even more. Her shadow magic flared erratically. She'd expected to toy with them, break their spirits like she'd done with Kai. Instead, these two stood before her, completely unfazed by her power.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with," Thea snarled.
"Neither do you," Mirajane replied simply, dark energy gathering around her clawed hands.
Mirajane's demonic aura exploded outward. The ground beneath her cracked from the sheer pressure of her magic power. Her Satan Soul form radiated with an intensity that made Thea take a step back.
But she recovered quickly. She thrust both shadow-coated blades forward, racing toward Mirajane. At the same instant, Gray launched his own attack, ice magic colliding with Thea's shadows in a crash.
The three mages clashed, ice shards and blades filled the air as Gray and Thea traded blows at close range. Mirajane tried finding openings, sending blasts of dark energy.
Thea spun and ducked, her body moving like liquid between their attacks. One of her blades found Gray's shoulder, but she flinched when she realised he didn't buldge. That second of inattention was enough for Mirajane's fist to connect with Thea's side, sending her stumbling back.
Gajeel and Lucy continued focusing Grunt. The massive man towered over them, his muscles straining against his leather vest.
"Look what we got here," Gajeel grinned, showing his metal teeth. "The big dumb one."
"Crush," Grunt said simply, cracking his knuckles.
Lucy took an instinctive step back, her hand hovering over her celestial keys. The simple size of their opponent made her stomach drop. But seeing Gajeel's confident stance helped steady her nerves.
"I got this," Gajeel's arm transformed into an iron club. He launched forward, aiming straight for Grunt's chest.
The attack connected with a loud clang. Grunt didn't even flinch. Instead, he grabbed Gajeel's iron club and yanked it, sending the dragon slayer flying.
"Iron Dragon's Roar!" Gajeel recovered mid-air, unleashing a tornado of metal shards.
The attack engulfed Grunt completely. But when the dust settled, he stood there unscathed, his crooked grin wider than before.
"Break girl," Grunt rumbled, charging forward with surprising speed.
Lucy snapped out of her shock. "Open, Gate of the Golden Bull! Taurus!"
The celestial spirit appeared, swinging his massive axe at Grunt. The blade connected with Grunt's forearm - and stopped dead. The muscle mountain barely seemed to notice as he backhanded Taurus, sending the spirit crashing into a wall.
"What the hell?" Gajeel muttered, transforming both arms into serrated blades. "How tough is this guy?"
Lucy gritted her teeth, pulling out another golden key. "Open, Gate of the Lion! Leo!"
Loke materialized in a flash of golden light, adjusting his glasses with a smirk. "My princess needs help?"
"Less flirting, more fighting!" Gajeel shouted as he ducked under one of Grunt's massive fists. The punch hit a tree behind him, shattering it like it was paper.
Loke's hands glowed with golden magic as he darted in, weaving between Grunt's attacks alongside Gajeel. Grunt absorbed their hits like they were nothing more than annoying flies. His movements were devastating - each swing of his arms carried enough force to potentially end the fight in a single hit.
Lucy moved carefully around the edges, looking for openings while maintaining Loke's gate. "Gajeel, his right side!"
Gajeel transformed his arm into a sword, aiming for the spot Lucy indicated. But Grunt's massive palm caught him mid-strike, threatening to crush him.
"Regulus Impact!" Loke's attack forced Grunt to release Gajeel, who rolled away just as another punch cratered the ground where he'd been.
"This guy's built like a damn mountain," Gajeel spat, wiping blood from his lip.
Lucy pulled out her fleuve d'étoiles, the magical whip extending as she tried to entangle Grunt's legs. The massive man simply pulled, nearly yanking her off her feet before she could release the whip.
Gajeel's body transformed, metallic scales spreading across his skin as shadows began to swirl around him. His Iron Shadow Dragon Mode activated with a burst of energy.
"Lucy! Loke! Back me up!" he shouted, not bothering to explain further as he charged straight at Grunt.
"Are you insane?" Lucy yelled, watching Gajeel rush towards their opponent. But she was already analyzing the situation. Gajeel wouldn't just charge in without a plan.
Her eyes widened as understanding hit her. "Loke!"
The celestial spirit caught her meaning instantly. "On it !" He dashed forward, golden light trailing from his hands as he matched Gajeel's charge.
Grunt stood his ground, massive fists raised to meet the incoming attackers. His small eyes tracked Gajeel's approach, expecting another head-on assault.
Lucy's fingers tightened around her keys. She knew Gajeel was counting on them understanding his intentions without spelling it out.
Loke leaped between Grunt and Gajeel, his ring flaring with brilliant light. "Regulus Brilliance!" The flash illuminated the entire area, forcing Grunt to shield his small eyes with one massive hand.
"Now!" Lucy called out, her whip ready to provide support if needed.
Gajeel's smirk widened as he channeled his magic into his karma demon iron sword. The blade grew, before he brought it down in a straight line, smashing on Grunt while the brute was still blinded.
Blood sprayed as the blade finally broke through Grunt's seemingly impenetrable defense. The massive man let out a deep, rumbling groan of pain, staggering back a step. His hand pressed against the wound, genuine surprise showing on his battered face.
"Not so tough now, are ya?" Gajeel taunted, readying another strike while Lucy flanked him once again.
"Hurt..." Grunt growled, his voice carrying a note of confusion along with the pain.
Natsu's flaming fist passed through another illusion of Marcus, dissipating it into wisps of magical energy. Marcus reappeared several feet away, his posture relaxed and a slight smile playing on his lips.
"Is that really the best Fairy Tail has to offer?" Marcus asked, his voice carrying the same smooth confidence it always had. "I expected more from the famous Salamander."
"Fire Dragon's Roar!" Natsu unleashed a torrent of flames, but Marcus's form shimmered and split into five identical copies.
Erza stepped forward. "His illusions are more sophisticated than any I've encountered before."
"Indeed," all five Marcus copies spoke in unison. "Though I wonder if you've truly grasped what you're dealing with."
Natsu growled in frustration, flames coating his entire body. "Stop playing around and fight us properly!"
"But I am fighting," Marcus replied, his copies walking in different directions. "The fact that you can't tell what's real and what's not... that's entirely your problem."
Erza launched a barrage of swords, each weapon passing harmlessly through the Marcus copies. The illusions reformed instantly, completely unaffected.
"Fire Dragon's Wing Attack!" Natsu's flames swept through the area, dispersing all the copies at once. But Marcus reappeared behind them, still wearing that infuriating smile.
"Your reputation precedes you both," Marcus said, creating more copies surrounding them. "But brute force won't help you here. Ask your new friend Kai - he learned that lesson rather painfully."
Natsu growled, while Erza stood beside him, her brown eyes narrowed as she analyzed the situation they were in.
"There has to be a way to find the real one," Erza muttered, requipping into her Flight Armor for better mobility. She dashed between the copies, allowing her to observe each one more closely. Still, every Marcus looked identical, moved the same way, even had the same magical signature.
Natsu launched another Fire Dragon's Roar, scattering more illusions only to have them reform instantly. "Come on! Fight me like a real man!"
"Getting frustrated already?" the Marcus copies taunted in perfect synchronization. "How disappointing."
"Damn it!" Natsu's flames grew hotter, his anger rising with each failed attack. The dragon slayer slammed his fists together, creating a shock wave of fire that expanded outward. "Stop hiding behind your stupid tricks!"
The copies merely laughed, their voices echoing from all directions. "Hide? I'm standing right in front of you, Salamander. Or am I behind you? Perhaps I'm not even here at all."
As Natsu continued his barrage of attacks, Erza stepped back for a moment, her mind racing. Something wasn't adding up about this fight.
"Natsu, wait," she called out. "Have you noticed? He hasn't landed a single attack on us."
Natsu paused, flames still dancing around his fists. "Now that you mention it..."
"All this time, he's been dodging and creating illusions," Erza said, her eyes scanning the multiple Marcus copies. "But not once has he actually struck back."
The Marcus copies maintained their smug expressions, but something flickered briefly in their eyes.
"He can't," Erza realized, a small smile forming on her face. "He can't attack while maintaining these illusions. That's why he's only been taunting us and avoiding our strikes."
"Is that right?" Natsu grinned, cracking his knuckles. "So all we gotta do is force him to fight back!"
The Marcus copies' smiles faltered slightly. One of them spoke, "An interesting theory, but-"
"Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame!" Natsu hurled a massive fireball that scattered the illusions once again.
This time, Erza was ready. As the copies began reforming, she spotted a slight movement to her left - different from the fluid motions of the illusions. Without hesitation, she requipped a sword and thrust it in that direction.
Marcus barely managed to dodge, but in that instant of defensive movement, all his illusions vanished.
"Found you," Erza said.
Marcus raised his hands, magical energy swirling around them. "Mirror of Truth!" he shouted, and a massive crystalline surface materialized between him and his attackers.
The mirror's surface rippled, showing Erza images of herself failing to protect her friends at the Tower of Heaven. For Natsu, it displayed the day of Igneel's disappearance.
Marcus smirked. "My mirror shows what you fear most, what keeps you awake at night. No one can-"
His eyes widened as Natsu charged straight at the mirror, flames engulfing his entire body.
"I don't care what your stupid mirror shows!" Natsu roared. "I'm all fired up now!"
The dragon slayer's fist smashed through the mirror like it was made of paper. The illusion shattered into countless glittering shards as Natsu's flaming punch connected solidly with Marcus's jaw, sending the illusionist flying backward.
Marcus wiped blood from his split lip, his composure cracking. The illusion master's eyes darted between Natsu and Erza, calculating his next move.
"So what, you broke through a mirror," Marcus said, his voice tight with anger. "But don't think that's all I have."
Erza pointed her sword at him. "Your tricks won't work anymore. We've seen through those illusions."
"Have you?" Marcus's hands moved in complex patterns, magical energy swirling around him. "Then perhaps it's time to show you what real power looks like."
Natsu's fists ignited. "Bring it on! I'm done playing your games!"
Kai moved silently through Valaris, keeping to the shadows. He could still hear the sound of battle outside the city.
He recalled his previous visit, when he'd mapped out potential entry points while Fairy Tail conducted their mission for Finn, just before he intervened. The east wing had caught his attention then - a series of decorative balconies with doors that servants left open.
Within seconds, he reached the third-floor balcony he'd identified. As expected, its glass doors slid open.
Kai slipped inside. No guards patrolled these halls - a detail he didn't like. Still, he wouldn't waste the opportunity.
He knew exactly where to go, and each turn brought him closer to Finn's private quarters and office. And before he could realise, he was facing the massive wooden doors leading to his brother's office.
Kai slowly pushed the doors open. The room was immense, way too big for a simple office. Kai stopped a few steps in, scanning around. And there he found him.
Next to a window, watching the outsides, hands clasped behind his back, was Finn.
"I see you have defeated the special operations" Finn said without turning.
Kai's hands slipped into his pockets. "They will be soon"
"Interesting, then you brought your fairy friends with you" Finn turned, his face half-shadowed. "But left them to fight on their own"
Kai remained silent, his jaw tight as he stared at his brother. Marcus's taunting projection, the fear in the townspeople's eyes. Then Wendy, unconscious and thrown down the stairs like she was nothing. His fist clenched in his pocket.
"You've gone too far," Kai said, his voice low and dangerous. "Attacking young girls? Torture? Playing with people? Is that what you've become?"
Finn's lips curved into a cold smile. "Whatever it takes to get what belongs to me."
"Nothing belongs to you anymore." Lightning crackled around Kai's shoulders. "Mother stripped your magic for a reason. And after everything you've been doing recently... you're not walking away this time."
"Such conviction." Finn stepped away from the window. "Tell me, brother, how does it feel playing hero with your little fairy friends? Do they know what you really are?"
"They know everything." Kai pulled his hands from his pockets, making Finn slightly twitch. "And they're still fighting for me."
"I see." Finn spread his arms, smirking. "Then stop me"
Kai's magic surged through him, thrusting his hand forward, unleashing a searing bolt of lightning that illuminated the office in brilliant blue.
But Finn didn't move. He stood there, that same cold smile playing on his lips, as the lightning streaked toward him.
Just before impact, a pulse of strange energy emanated from Finn's body, taking on an strange purple hue. When Kai's lightning was about to touch him, Finn simply made it dissapear with a single hand gesture, leaving him completely untouched.
Kai's eyes widened. He couldn't be wrong. That was magic, emanating from his own brother. It couldn't be. Finn was supposed to have a single drop of magic inside him.
"Surprised?" Finn's smile widened.
Kai's mouth opened, his mind racing to process what he'd just witnessed. "How... that's not..."
Finn's laughter filled the office, starting as a low chuckle before growing more menacing. His previous demeanor cracked, the cold smile twisted into something uglier.
"What's wrong, brother?" Finn's voice dripped with venom. His eyes blazed with rage.
He took a step forward, purple energy pulsing from his feet. "You see, I found someone willing to give me this magic. Someone who understood my rightful place."
Finn's fury radiated off him in waves. "And now, I don't need that stupid magic. I have what I truly deserve." His voice rose to a shout. "POWER!"
Before Kai could react, Finn thrust his palm forward. A beam of violent purple energy erupted from his hand, slamming into Kai's chest. The force launched him backward, sending him flying.
Kai pushed himself up, his chest burning where the purple beam had struck. He steadied himself against a pillar, watching his brother's manic display.
"What did you give up for this?" Kai's voice came out rough.
Finn's laughter grew more unhinged, echoing off the walls. His eyes had a wild gleam that Kai had never seen before.
"Price?" Finn's voice cracked. "PRICE? I gained everything! This magic... this beautiful magic... it lets me create anything!" He spread his arms wide, "Any form, any element, any kind - it's all mine to command! Morph magic in its purest form! Who cares about price !"
Kai's breath caught in his throat as he noticed something wrong with Finn's appearance. His brother's face seemed to shift subtly, like wax beginning to melt. The skin around his eyes rippled, and his fingers twitched in unnatural ways.
"Finn..." Kai took a step back, real fear creeping into his voice. "Your body..."
Finn's body continued to twist and contort. Kai watched in horror as his brother's face distorted. Finn's jaw elongated, teeth sharpening into points. His eyes grew larger, the pupils splitting.
"Look at this power!" Finn's voice had become deeper, more guttural. "This is what true magic feels like! I don't need any other magic !"
His fingers lengthened, purple energy crackling between them. The transformation continued up his arms, muscle and bone reshaping themselves with sickening cracks. His spine curved unnaturally, forcing him to hunch forward as spikes erupted along his back.
The purple energy swirling around Finn was only increasing in power. Kai could only watch, powerless, his own brother changing into whatever horrible creature that was. He lowered his head, shaking. He knew he had no other choice.
"I'm sorry, mother" Kai whispered.
Finn threw his head back, his distorted laughter starting once again as he spread his grotesque arms wide.
"Can you feel it, brother?" His voice boomed, deeper and more inhuman with each word. "This is what I always deserved ! No more living in mother's shadow, in your shadow, no more rules about what magic should be! I can reshape reality itself!"
The purple energy surged around him. "And you..." Finn's mutated face twisted into what might have been a smile. "I can now crush you, I can crush Fairy Tail, I don't need you anymore ! To hell with the scrolls, I have complete power-"
The words died in his throat. The purple glow flickered, then vanished. His transformation froze mid-shift, before reversing totally.
Finn's eyes, still locked onto the ceiling from laughing, slowly lowered.
They widened in shock and disbelief. There was Kai, standing close, his head right next to Finn's. A blade of pure lightning, crackling with intense blue energy, had pierced straight through his chest.
"Why..." Kai whispered, his voice trembling as he held his position. "Finn… Why…"
Blood trickled from the corner of Finn's mouth. His eyes, no longer filled with manic energy, held a mixture of pain and confusion.
"K-Kai," Finn managed to call out, his voice weak and raspy. His gaze drifted past his brother's shoulder, focusing on something behind them.
At the office doors stood the Fairy Tail members. Natsu, Erza, Gray, Lucy, Mirajane, and the others had arrived, their clothes bearing the marks of their recent battles. Behind them, Marcus and Thea were unconscious and tied up, Grunt had mostly been left outside Valaris looking at his size.
Natsu's feet moved forward instinctively, ready to rush in and help his guildmate. But Erza's arm shot out, blocking his path.
"What are you-" Natsu started to protest, but the words died in his throat when he saw their faces.
Erza stood rigid, her eyes wide and trembling as she watched the scene before them. Lucy's face was already streaked with tears, one hand pressed against her chest. Mirajane had both hands clasped over her mouth.
The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the soft crackle of Kai's lightning.
Finn's eyes drifted back to his brother's face. They widened as he noticed a tear rolling down Kai's cheek, falling silently to the floor.
"Why did you have to do this?" Kai's voice trembled, barely above a whisper. His hands shook as he maintained the magic blade. "Why did you have to abandon me too?"
Tears fell freely now, dropping onto the polished floor between them. The crackling of his magic seemed to dim.
"First father... then mother... and now you." Kai's words came out broken, each one carrying years of pain.
Finn's eyes remained fixed on Kai, his breathing shallow and irregular. Blood continued to trickle from his mouth, but he made no sound.
"And now..." Kai's shoulders shook. "Now I have to do this. Because you just wouldn't stop."
With a sharp intake of breath, Kai dissolved the lightning blade.
Both of them dropped to their knees on the floor. Blood pooled beneath them as Finn's head lolled forward, his skin growing paler with each passing second. His breathing came in shallow, ragged gasps. Kai gripped his brother's shoulders, his own head bowed low, unable to look at what he'd done.
"Thank.. you… Kai..."
Those few words from his brother made Kai break down. His shoulders heaved with violent sobs, tears streaming down his face.
"I'm sorry," he choked out. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't... I couldn't save anyone." His fingers dug into Finn's shoulders. "Not father... not mother... and now... now I couldn't even save you. Everything I've done.. And this is how it ends…"
His voice rose to a scream of anguish. "I hate myself! I hate what I am! All I do is fail everyone!" His voice tore through the room as Kai screamed his lungs out in pain.
The Fairy Tail members stood frozen at the doorway, each processing the devastating scene before them. Natsu remained rooted to the spot. His eyes were wide with shock, now fully understanding what was going on. The dragon slayer's fists clenched at his sides, knowing this was a battle he couldn't fight for.
Erza couldn't stop the tears that rolled down her cheeks. She tried to maintain her stance, keeping her arm out to hold the others back, but her hand trembled. Each sob from Kai felt like a sword through her own heart.
Wendy buried her face in Mirajane's dress, her small frame shaking with unstoppable tears. Mirajane held the young dragon slayer close, her own tears falling freely as she stroked Wendy's hair.
Lucy had sunk to her knees, her legs no longer able to support her. Her hands pressed against the cold floor as tears dripped from her chin. The celestial mage felt utterly powerless.
Gajeel, who remained slightly behind, keeping an eye on Thea and Marcus, was also shaking, managing to hold whatever amount of water forming in his eyes.
Gray stood with his head bowed, his entire body shaking. His hands were balled into fists so tight it hurted. The ice mage understood all too well the pain of losing family, and watching Kai go through it tore open old wounds.
The Fairy Tail members gasped collectively as magic erupted around Kai and Finn. The swirling energy took shape, materializing into something none of them had expected.
Two majestic hawks manifested on either side of the embracing brothers. To their left, an elegant hawk of silver and gold appeared, its feathers shimmering with beautiful light. Its presence gave out a pure sense of grace and wisdom.
On their right, a fierce blue hawk materialized, its feathers crackling with familiar azure lightning. Its powerful form radiated strength, yet both magical beings gazed down at Kai and Finn with maternal tenderness.
"Those must be..." Lucy whispered, still trying to hold back her tears.
"Aelis and Kirin," Erza finished softly, understanding appearing on her face.
The two magical hawks towered over their children, their forms nearly touching the ceiling of the vast office. Despite their size, there was nothing threatening about their presence. Their eyes held only love as they watched over their sons.
Both of them maintained their positions, forming a protective circle around their children as Kai continued to hold his dying brother.
The sight broke something in the Fairy Tail members. Lucy's quiet tears turned to open sobs as she pressed her hands to her face. Next to her, Wendy's crying grew louder as well.
Even Natsu, felt hot tears rolling down his cheeks. His shoulders shook as he was unable to hold back any longer.
Just then, both Aelis and Kirin slowly turned their heads toward the group of mages. Their eyes, met each tear-stained face in turns. To everyone's surprise, both hawks' beaks curved into what could only be described as smiles, recognizing something in these people who had come to mean so much to their son.
With that final gesture, both closed their eyes. Their forms began to fade, dissolving into particles of light and lightning.
Silence fell over the room. The magical presence of Aelis and Kirin had vanished, leaving behind only the cold reality of what had happened.
"What...?" Gray whispered, not managing to find his words. All eyes turned back to Kai, still kneeling on the polished floor. His shoulders had stopped shaking, and an eerie calm had settled over him. With gentle movements, Kai carefully laid Finn's body down.
His hands trembled slightly as he reached for Finn's face. With the utmost care, his's fingers brushed over his brother's eyelids, closing them forever. Just as he finished, Finn's chest rose and fell one last time - a quiet exhale that marked the end of his journey.
The sun caught the tears still wet on Kai's cheeks as he remained frozen in that position.
Natsu and the others stood rooted in place. Tears continued to fall freely as they watched their friend. None of them had words to offer - what could anyone say in a moment like this ?
The Fire Slayer was torn between his instinct to rush forward and the knowledge that sometimes even the strongest magic couldn't fix what was broken. Lucy leaned against his shoulder, her quiet sobs matching the rhythm of his shaking frame.
Mirajane looked down at the young dragon slayer, gently stroking her blue hair. Her own tears had slowed, though they still marked trails down her cheeks. With a gentle squeeze to Wendy's shoulder, she slowly separated herself from the group.
Mirajane moved with careful steps. Her shoes clicked softly against the floor as she approached Kai. In her eyes was only a deep understanding of the pain before her.
She didn't rush, giving Kai the space to sense her presence. When she reached him, she lowered herself to crouch behind him. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him into a tender embrace.
At first, he remained still, but gradually, Mira felt the subtle shakes again. Kai turned in her arms, crumbling completely. His face pressed against her shoulder as his body shook with silent sobs. His fingers clutched at the fabric of her dress, holding on as if she was going to leave him too.
Mira simply held him tighter, one hand moving to stroke his hair while the other remained firmly around his shoulders. She didn't offer empty words or false comfort. She understood that what Kai needed most in this moment wasn't that - just the simple comfort of a shoulder to cry on.
Her own tears fell silently as she cradled him, letting him release all the pain and loss he had. She could feel each sob that shook his body, each trembling breath he took, and she held him through it all.
