The Fairy Tail guild hall felt unusually quiet that morning. The absence of three members - Master Makarov, Erza, and Kai - weighed heavily on everyone's minds.
Seven long days had passed since the incident at Valaris, and news of Prince Finn's death had spread across the continent like wildfire. The Rune Knights had descended upon the palace within less than an hour, arresting everyone involved.
While most of the Fairy Tail members were released quickly, Kai remained in custody, charged with the prince's murder. The irony was cruel - the person who had potentielly saved them from something terrible, was now facing punishment for it.
Lucy sat with Natsu and Gray, absently stirring her tea. "It's been a week" she said softly.
"Master and Erza won't give up," Natsu replied, "They have all the evidence."
Gray leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. "Don't forget Marcus and his crew confessed everything too. Surely the only times those three made a smart decision"
Mirajane approached their table, setting down fresh drinks. Her smile was weaker as she glanced at the guild's entrance. "Warren said he hasn't picked up any updates from Erza since yesterday. They must still be in deliberations."
Makarov stormed through the Magic Council's hallway, radiating fury as he passed the tribunal room for the fourth time that day. His mustache twitched with each mumbled curse.
"Those pompous, self-righteous..." he grumbled, hands clenched behind his back. "After everything we presented..."
Erza walked beside him. Her face remained composed, but her eyes blazed with determination.
"This isn't over, Master," she said firmly. "I'll spend tonight reviewing everything we know. I'll find more ideas"
Makarov's scowl deepened. "Seven days of this nonsense. Seven! They have Marcus's full confession about the illegal magic, Thea's testimony about Finn's plans, and still they deliberate!"
"I'll go through every case file in the archive if I have to. There must be a way to prove Kai acted in legitimate defense, saving Valaris and maybe more at the same time" Erza declared.
Makarov nodded grimly, his expression softening as he thought about Kai.
"I'm not leaving here without that boy cleared of all charges," he said. "Not after what he went through."
Erza paused, studying the old master's face.
"What Kai did..." Makarov continued, "Taking his own brother's life - that's not something anyone should have to do. But he saw the corruption. He understood there was no other way."
Makarov turned to face her fully. "It takes immense maturity to take that kind of decision. To look at someone you grew up with, someone who shared your childhood, and recognize when they're too far gone to save."
He shook his head slowly, remembering Kai's haunted expression when the rune knights took him to the council.
"Most mages his age would have hesitated, trying to find another solution until it was too late. But Kai saw what needed to be done and carried that burden himself. That's a kind of wisdom you can't teach."
Erza sighed heavily, leaning against the marble wall. The memory of that day in Valaris played back in her mind
"He didn't want to do it," she said quietly. "I saw his face, Master. The pain in his eyes when he realized what Finn had become."
Makarov nodded solemnly as Erza continued.
"The council sits here in judgment, but none of them were there." She pushed away from the wall, determination over her face.
"Kai deserves his freedom. He's suffering enough for doing what was necessary. And if the council can't see that..." Her fist clenched at her side. "Then they're blinder than I thought."
Natsu's fists blazed with fire as he hammered away a training dummy outside the guild hall. Sweat dripped down his face.
"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!" he roared, obliterating another practice target.
Wiping his forehead with the back of his hand, he caught a flicker of movement in his peripheral vision. He squinted, trying to make out the figures approaching.
A flash of scarlet hair caught the sunlight. Behind the taller figure walked someone smaller. Natsu's eyes widened as recognition hit him like a punch.
He burst through the guild hall doors, nearly breaking them down.
"They're back! Master and Erza are coming!" he shouted.
Chairs scraped against wood as guild members jumped to their feet. Lucy dropped her book, and Gray stopped mid-conversation with Juvia.
They poured out of the guild hall, crowding the entrance. Happy and Carla soared above their heads for a better view.
"Where's Kai?" Wendy asked, standing on tiptoes to see past the others.
As Makarov and Erza drew closer, the excited chatter died down. Their faces were grim, and more importantly - they were alone.
"Master?" Mirajane stepped forward
Makarov lifted both hands in a calming gesture, silencing the anxious crowd. His stern expression softened, a slight smile finally breaking through.
"Kai has been cleared of all charges," he announced. "The Magic Council recognized his actions were in defense of Valaris and its people."
Relief washed over the gathered faces, but Natsu pushed forward, his directness taking over.
"Well if he's free, where the hell is he?" Natsu demanded, looking around as if expecting Kai to materialize from thin air.
Erza stepped forward, Her expression grew solemn as she addressed the group.
"He had one last thing to do before returning," she explained, her voice growing heavier. "The Council granted him permission to handle his brother's burial personally. He... he wanted to do it, before coming back to us."
The guild members exchanged worried glances as Erza continued.
"He's not far - on one of Magnolia's heights," her voice grew quieter, sadness seeping into her tone. "He chose a peaceful spot overlooking the city."
Kai stood motionless, his long jacket barely stirring in the gentle breeze. His eyes remained fixed on the simple grave he'd made for Finn's. No elaborate headstone or golden plaque - just a smooth stone holding his brother's name.
Rustling of dried leaves were the the only sound breaking the silence. The hilltop overlooking Magnolia offered solitude, judged good enough for Kai.
The wind picked up slightly, sending a shiver through his body. Not from the temperature - it came from somewhere deeper. This was the end of everything he'd known. His adopted parents, Aelis and Kirin, were gone. And now Finn, his brother.
He was the last one. The final remnant of a once happy family. All of it had crumbled away, in what felt like a blink.
As Kai was about to leave the grave, movement caught his eye. His gaze shifted left, where Mirajane stood quietly. Words caught in his throat as he took in her expression - solemn yet gentle, her hands clasped in front of her as she gazed at Finn's grave.
Before he could fully process her presence, more footsteps crunched on the leaves. Wendy appeared on his right. Gray and Lucy joined, taking their places in the growing line.
Natsu and Erza emerged next, positioning themselves beside Mirajane. The line continued to grow as more familiar faces appeared - Laxus, Cana, Lisanna and Elfman.
Wakaba and Macao stepped forward, followed by Max. Jet and Droy flanked Levy as they joined the gathering with many more.
Master Makarov completed the assembly, his presence anchoring the group as they stood in front of Finn's grave. No one spoke. No one needed to. They simply stood there, silently supporting Kai, with all the respect they had.
They remained there as minutes passed. Kai's shoulders tensed, his hands curling into fists inside his jacket pockets. When he finally spoke, his voice came out rough and low.
"Finn Dawson" He swallowed hard. "My brother did terrible things. Things I'll never be able to forgive. And those things will mostly haunt me until the day I die."
His voice cracked slightly, but he continued. "He wasn't always like that. Before the magic, before everything went wrong, he was different. But that doesn't excuse what he became."
The wind picked up, making his jacket flutter. "But I can't forgive myself either, having his own blood on my hands. My own brother. I ended his life." Kai's voice dropped to barely above a whisper.
The gathered guild members remained silent, letting Kai's confession settle.
He continued speaking, "He was still my brother." The words came out barely controlled. "No matter what happened, what he did... he was my family."
Lightning sparked briefly around Kai, betraying his emotions. His shoulders trembled slightly as he fought to maintain composure.
"I'll never forget the boy who used to play with me, and learn magic with me." Kai's voice grew thick with emotion. "The one who followed me everywhere I would go, smiling to any words I would say."
The wind died down, leaving an oppressive atmosphere on the hilltop. Kai's throat worked as he tried to swallow past the tightness building there, still his next words came out choked.
"These last words are for you, Finn my brother." Kai's voice broke completely on the last word. His eyes burned as tears threatened to spill over.
His chest heaved as he fought to hold back sobs but the tears finally broke free, rolling silently down his face as his shoulders shook with suppressed sobs.
Kai took a shaky breath as he addressed his next words to his brother.
"You helped me find a new family, Finn." His voice trembled. "Even if it wasn't the way either of us would have wanted. Your actions, as terrible as they were, led me where I am today."
"And now... now I'll help you too. You'll be part of a family again too, brother." Kai placed his hand on his chest, precisely on his heart. "I'll keep you here, in my heart, forever. That's my promise to you."
The wind picked up again as Kai's final words faded into silence. His tears continued flowing, losing control on his last and final words.
Everyone stood motionless, the silence broken only by quiet sobs. Tears streamed down many faces as they listened to Kai's last words. Natsu remained completely still, his own eyes red.
Gray stepped forward from the line, his footsteps as soft as possible. Magic gathered around his hands, a soft blue glow emanating as he approached the grave before crouching down.
He crafted two small ice sculptures. The figures took shape - perfect miniature representations of Aelis and Kirin, just as they'd appeared that day in the palace, placing them carefully on either side of Finn's name.
Rising slowly, Gray turned away, his own letting a tear escape down his cheek as he walked back toward his spot in the line. As he passed Kai, he kept his eyes forward, trying to maintain what little control he had left.
But Kai's hand slowly shot out, gently grabbing Gray's arm. The lightning mage's voice came out rough and broken as he managed to whisper, "Thank you."
A few minutes later, one by one, the Fairy Tail members began their quiet retreat from the hilltop. Makarov was the first to turn away, heading down the path.
Natsu followed, Lucy wiping tears from her eyes as she left too, Erza sticking close.
Gray lingered for a moment, looking at his ice sculptures one last time before joining. Wendy gave Kai's hand a gentle squeeze before she and Carla made their way down.
The rest of the members filtered away gradually. Some nodded to Kai, others simply turned and walked. Laxus was among the last to leave, his face showing a few tears as well as he descended the hill.
Mira remained the longest, standing quietly beside Kai until most others had gone. She touched his arm gently, before turning away as well, leaving Kai alone with the grave, the wind, and his thoughts.
It took him several minutes to regain his composure, using his forearms to wipe away the tears that had now fully soaked his face. His breathing gradually steadied as he fought against his own emotions.
In and out, he focused on each breath, forcing his shoulders to stop shaking.
His gaze drifted back to the grave one final time. Gray's ice sculptures of his parents flanked Finn's name.
Walking towards the grave, he shrugged off his long jacket, the one that had become his everyday companion, before carefully drapping it over the grave. The dark fabric settled over the ice sculptures and the carved name, as if providing eternal protection to his parents and brother.
But that wasn't the only meaning to his gesture - he was also laying Blue Bird to rest. From today, he was Kai Dawson, a proud member of Fairy Tail.
Wendy balanced a stack of plates while helping Mirajane and Lucy clean up after dinner service. The usual chatter filling the room as members lounged around, some still finishing their meals.
The doors creaked open quietly, and Kai stepped inside. He wore a simple black t-shirt, his arms bare without his signature jacket. The hall fell silent as everyone noticed his entrance, eyes drawn to his unusually exposed appearance.
Nobody moved. The silence stretched as guild members stared at their newest family member, standing somewhat awkwardly in the doorway.
"Hey... Guys," Kai said softly, his voice carrying in the quiet hall.
His eyes widened in shock as the guild erupted. "KAI!" They shouted in unison, rushing toward him. Happy flew straight into his chest while others crowded around. Even Elfman had tears in his eyes as he pushed through to clap Kai on the shoulder.
Wendy nearly dropped her plates but Mirajane caught them, both women beaming at the scene. Lucy wiped away tears, watching as their reserved lightning mage found himself surrounded by his guildmates.
Levy stepped forward from the crowd. "We were worried you wouldn't return," she said softly. "After everything that happened... and the state you were in when we left you..."
Happy remained firmly pressed against his chest, still sobbing as Kai's fingers stroked the Exceed's blue fur.
A faint smile crossed Kai's face - not his guarded expression, but something genuine. "What I said up there," he paused, looking around at the faces of his guildmates, "about considering Fairy Tail my family... I meant every word." His voice grew quieter. "And I'll keep the promise I made to Finn."
Kai shifted his weight, looking around at the gathered faces. "I was thinking..." he started, "Maybe we could have one of those famous Fairy Tail parties ?"
The guild exploded with cheers before he could even finish the sentence. Mirajane's face lit up as she spun around, abandoning the cleanup. "Wendy, forget the dishes! Help me get the good stuff from the cellar!"
Wendy dropped her cloth with a giggle, rushing to help Mira gather supplies. Guild members scattered in different directions, some dragging tables together while others started pulling out extra mugs and plates.
"Now that's MANLY!" Elfman boomed, slapping Kai's shoulder hard enough to make him stumble.
"Elfman!" Lisanna grabbed her brother's ear. "Stop hitting people!" She dragged him away as he protested about showing manly affection.
Through the chaos of preparation, Natsu and Gray made their way to where Kai stood. The three mages faced each other. A slight nod from Gray, a grin from Natsu, and a softening around Kai's eyes spoke for itself. Without a word, they raised their fists and bumped them together.
The celebration was in full swing when Kai found himself at the bar, settling onto a stool next to Makarov. The guild master nursed his drink, watching the things unfold across the hall with a contented smile.
"It's good to have you back, kid," Makarov said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "These past weeks had me worried."
Kai stared into his untouched drink. "I should be thanking you and Erza. What you did at the Council-"
Makarov waved his hand dismissively. "Bah, that's no much. Though I have to ask..." He gestured at Kai's bare arms. "The jacket?"
"Left it up there," Kai replied quietly. "With Finn." He took a small sip from his mug before continuing. "Blue Bird needed to be laid to rest too. That's who I was for so long." His fingers reached for his fairytail emblem on his forarm. "Now I'm just Kai Dawson. Fairy Tail wizard."
Makarov nodded slowly, "And that's more than enough."
Before Kai could respond to Makarov's words, small hands grabbed his arm and tugged him away from the bar.
"Come on, Kai! You have to dance with us!" Wendy's cheerful voice cut through the noise of the celebration.
Kai looked down at the young dragon slayer, her bright eyes and infectious smile making it impossible to refuse. She pulled him toward the center of the guild hall where others were already dancing - or whatever Gray and Elfman were trying to do - to the lively music.
"I don't really-" Kai started to protest, but Wendy was already spinning around him.
"Just follow what everyone else is doing!" she encouraged, her blue hair whirling as she moved to the beat.
Kai found himself swept up in the whirlwind of the party. The young dragon slayer twirled and bounced, teaching him simple steps that even he couldn't mess up. Other guild members joined in, creating a chaotic but joyful event.
After what felt like days, Kai's legs finally gave out. He stumbled back to the bar, dropping onto a stool with an exhausted sigh. His hair was disheveled, and his breath came in short pants.
Mirajane's melodic laugh greeted him as she slid a fresh drink his way. "Here, you look like you need this."
"Thanks," Kai managed between breaths, gratefully accepting the cool glass.
"I have to say," Mirajane said, leaning on the counter with an amused smile, "for someone who can fight for hours, you sure got winded quickly out there. Who knew our little Wendy could wear out the mighty Kai Dawson?"
Kai took a long sip before responding. "Fighting I can handle. Whatever that was..." He gestured vaguely at the dance floor where Wendy was still going strong, now dragging Romeo into the fray. "That's a different kind of exhausting."
"She does have endless energy, doesn't she?" Mirajane chuckled, watching Wendy's continued enthusiasm.
Kai watched the dance floor, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Mirajane's hand settled gently on his arm, drawing his attention back to her. Her eyes were filled with emotion as she looked at him.
"You know," she said softly, "it fills me with so much joy to see you here like this. You know, actually smiling ?"
Kai glanced down at where her hand rested on his arm, then back to her face.
She squeezed his arm lightly before pulling away. "And I think..." she added, already turning to head back to other waiting guild members, "I might like Kai Dawson even more than I ever liked Blue Bird."
As she walked away to serve drinks to Macao and Wakaba, Kai found himself frozen in place, unable to process what just happened.
The party's energy had finally begun to wane as the night grew late. Bodies were scattered across the guild hall, victims of exhaustion and celebration. Cana had passed out mid-drink, while Macao and Wakaba were already snoring in a very original - slumped on a table - position.
Kai's entire body felt numb as he made his way to a corner couch. The soft cushions welcomed him as he sat into them. His eyelids grew heavy, and the distant sounds of snoring guild members began to fade.
Just as sleep was about to claim him, he felt a small weight press against his side. Opening one eye, he found Wendy had curled up next to him, her head resting against his arm. The young dragon slayer had finally crashed, her breathing already steady as sleep caught her out.
Kai blinked slowly, looking down at the blue-haired girl who'd somehow managed to use him as a pillow. But before he could think about anything, exhaustion finally won over him.
From the hall, Natsu, Lucy, Erza and Mira didn't miss a single piece of the scene.
"Would you look at that," Lucy whispered, nudging Erza with her elbow. "Remember when he first showed up? Who would've thought..."
Mirajane wiped down the bar with a soft smile, her eyes occasionally drifting to the sleeping pair. "He's changed so much since then."
"It's more like he stopped pretending," Erza observed quietly, taking a sip from her cup. "The real Kai was always there"
Natsu, sprawled across a nearby table, lifted his head just enough to peek at them. "Wendy saw it first, didn't she? Back at Fairy Hills."
"She did," Mirajane agreed, "She never doubted him, not even once." But her smile faltered, "Not like I did."
They watched as Wendy shifted slightly in her sleep, and Kai's arm unconsciously adjusted to keep her from sliding off the couch, making Lucy's heart melt.
"Should we wake them?" Lucy asked.
"Let them rest," Erza replied, a soft expression crossing her face. "They've both earned it."
Kai's eyes squinted against the morning light. His neck ached from sleeping awkwardly on the couch, and the spot where Wendy had fallen asleep was empty. He'd clearly overslept.
Rising with a groan, he stretched his stiff muscles, heading for the exit, craving fresh air to clear his head, when Gray's voice caught him.
"Well, look who finally decided to join the land of the living," Gray called out, a smirk playing on his face. "Sleeping beauty got his beauty rest?"
"Very funny," Kai muttered, running a hand through his messy hair. "What time is it anyway"
"Almost noon," Gray replied, crossing his arms. "Wendy had to leave early for training with Carla. Didn't want to wake you up."
Before Kai could respond, the guild doors swung open. Laxus strode in, looking slightly dusty from what must have been a morning mission. Without acknowledging anyone, he made his way straight to the stairs leading to Makarov's office.
Kai and Gray watched Laxus disappear up the stairs, his coat swishing behind him.
"Is he always like that?" Kai asked, gesturing vaguely toward where Laxus had gone. "Looking ready to murder someone?"
Gray chuckled, leaning back against a nearby table. "You're the one to talk. But pretty much. That's just Laxus for you. Though he's mellowed out over the years, believe it or not."
"Mellowed out?" Kai raised an eyebrow. "Hard to imagine."
"Oh man, you should've seen him before," Gray said, shaking his head. "He used to be way worse. Actually tried to take over the guild."
Kai's eyes widened slightly. "Seriously?"
"Yeah, but that's ancient history now," Gray waved it off. "He's changed. Still keeps that permanent scowl though."
"Noticed that," Kai said, stealing another glance at the stairs. "Guess some things never change."
"Speaking of change," Gray smirked, "nice to see you without that stuffy jacket for once. Finally warming up to us?"
Kai rolled his eyes. "Don't push it, Fullbuster. At least I keep my clothes on."
Gray looked down at himself, suddenly realizing he was only wearing boxers.
Laxus pushed open the door to Makarov's office without knocking. The old man sat behind his desk, sorting through paperwork, barely glancing up.
"What brings you here ?" Makarov asked, setting down his quill.
"Heard some things during my morning mission," Laxus said, his face showing concern. "Things I don't like."
Makarov's eyebrows rose slightly. He pushed aside the papers and gave Laxus his full attention. "Go on."
"There's talk about morph magic," Laxus crossed his arms, leaning against the wall. "That's the name of the magic Finn was using."
The mention of morph magic made Makarov's expression darken. He closed his eyes - they weren't done with this situation, not by a long shot.
"Tell me everything you heard," Makarov said quietly.
"Word is, there's been cases popping up," Laxus continued, his voice low. "People who suddenly gained the ability to create different types of magic at will. No training, no learning - just pure creation."
Makarov's frown deepened. "That's impossible. Unless.."
"Yeah, that's what I thought too." Laxus shifted his weight. "But here's the weird part - none of these people stuck around long enough to prove it. They'd show up, demonstrate this ability once or twice, then vanish."
"Vanish?" Makarov's eyes narrowed.
"Complete disappearances. No bodies, no traces. One day they're bragging about their new powers, the next - gone." Laxus ran a hand through his hair. "Happened to at least three people in the past month alone. Four if we count Finn."
"And this would be the same magic Finn was using?"
"Has to be. The timing's too convenient." Laxus pushed off from the wall and planted his hands on Makarov's desk. "But here's what bugs me - every single one of these people disappeared before they could really show off what they could do. Almost like..."
"Like someone's cleaning up loose ends," Makarov finished.
"Exactly." Laxus straightened up.
Kai walked down the Magnolia market, his arms swinging awkwardly at his sides. Without his jacket's pockets, he felt naked. His hands kept trying to find their usual resting spots, only to meet empty air.
Shoppers turned to stare at the sight of a mage fidgeting like a nervous teenager. A few guild members who spotted him tried to hide their amused smiles.
"This is ridiculous," he muttered, crossing his arms over his plain black t-shirt.
He stopped at a clothing stall, eyeing the various jackets and coats on display. Nothing seemed right - too flashy, too plain, too short, too long. The vendor kept suggesting bright colors that made Kai wince.
Moving to the next stall, he found himself missing the familiar weight of his old jacket. As much as he needed to move on, he hadn't realized how much that piece of clothing had become part of him.
He turned away from another disappointing stall when he heard familiar voices.
"Kai? What are you doing here?" Juvia called out, waving enthusiastically. Gajeel trudged behind her, munching on a piece of metal.
"Shopping," Kai replied, "Or trying to."
"Oh, your jacket ?" Juvia's eyes widened. "Juvia never saw you without it before."
"Jacket or not, I need something with pockets." Kai explained frustrated.
Gajeel grunted. "Get a new one then. Simple."
"If only," Kai sighed. "Nothing feels right."
Juvia's eyes lit up. "Oh! Juvia can help! Juvia knows fashion!" She grabbed Kai's arm and dragged him toward a nearby boutique.
"This one!" Juvia held up a bright blue coat with ruffles along the collar. "It matches your eyes!"
Kai stepped back. "That's... not really my style."
"Then this!" She produced a white jacket covered in silver sequins.
"Definitely not."
"Oh! This would look perfect!" This time it was a deep purple velvet number with gold trim.
Gajeel couldn't contain his laughter as Kai's expression grew more horrified with each suggestion. Juvia's enthusiasm only seemed to increase with each rejection, her pile of rejected clothes growing larger by the minute.
After what felt like hours, Kai managed to escape Juvia's grasp. He wandered around the market, exhausted. The sun had shifted significantly in the sky - it really had been hours since he started his little expedition, and he remained exactly where he began: pocketless.
Crossing another street, he spotted Natsu and Lucy sharing lunch at an outdoor café. They sat close together, Lucy giggling at something Natsu said while he gestured wildly, nearly knocking over their drinks. The way Lucy's hand rested near Natsu's on the table, how his eyes lit up when she laughed - these weren't new observations for Kai.
During his time at the guild, he'd noticed all the little dynamics between members. Natsu and Lucy's obvious connection. The way Gray pretended with Juvia, but he clearly was attached to her. And then Gajeel and Levy, who Kai recently learned she was already waiting for a baby.
Kai simply walked past the café, leaving Natsu and Lucy to their meal. He wondered if they were actually official yet, or still dancing around each other like most of the guild's potential couples seemed to do.
His wandering through Magnolia led him past the Raijin team. Freed, Bickslow, and Evergreen spotted him immediately.
"My, my, what happened to your signature look?" Evergreen fluttered her fan.
"Don't start," Kai warned, but Evergreen was already circling him with a critical eye.
"We must find you appropriate attire," she declared. "Something befitting a member of Fairy Tail."
"Yeah, yeah!" Bickslow's dolls echoed, floating around Kai's head.
Kai managed to dodge their fashion consultation only to run into the Strauss siblings. Elfman's booming voice carried across the street as he haggled with a vegetable vendor.
"THESE ARE MANLY CARROTS!"
Several shoppers jumped at his volume. Lisanna tried to calm him while Mirajane just smiled, used to her brother's enthusiasm.
Further down the street, Gray walked past in nothing but his underwear, completely oblivious to his state of undress. A group of women giggled and pointed.
"Gray, your clothes" Kai pointed out, not even stopping.
"Huh?"
As the sun began to set, Kai also crossed paths with Wendy returning from her day with Chelia, and Erza, ordering a massive amount of strawberry cakes, for whatever reasons. Wendy waved cheerfully, her blue hair bouncing as she ran past him.
Finally, exhausted and frustrated, Kai made his way back to the guild. He collapsed onto the same couch he'd left that morning, throwing an arm over his eyes.
"Never again," he muttered. "Shopping is horrible. Plus I'm bad at it. And I hate being bad at something"
Kai spent the next two minutes cursing and muttering under his breath, his arm still draped over his eyes. Words like "stupid clothes" and "Juvia's taste" slipped out between frustrated sighs.
He finally noticed the silence in the hall. Moving his arm, he found several pairs of eyes watching him with barely contained amusement.
Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza, Mirajane, and Wendy stood in a loose semicircle around the couch. Each wore varying degrees of smirks and grins that made Kai instantly suspicious.
"What?" he asked, "What's the deal?"
Wendy stepped forward, holding a rectangular box wrapped in simple brown paper. "This is for you, Kai."
"We saw you while having lunch," Lucy explained, sharing a knowing look with Natsu. "And after bumping into everyone else, we learned you were looking for new clothes."
Erza nodded, her arms crossed. "So we decided to help you out, however we could."
"Open it," Mira urged, her smile warm and encouraging.
Kai looked at the box, before slowly opening it up. His fingers traced the edges of the brown paper, carefully unwrapping what lay inside.
His eyes widened, inside was a sleeveless hoodie, with open pockets on the side. The fabric looked soft, durable, but also felt practical.
He took it out, displaying the entire thing. It was fully black, matching Kai's liking to more somber outfits. The sleeveless design would let his Fairy Tail emblem appear without hiding it.
He immediately put it on, and it felt amazing. The fabric settled perfectly against his skin, and his hands found their way into the pockets.
He heard a chorus of appreciative sounds from the others as Lucy circled him like a fashion critic, her eyes bright with excitement. She tugged at the fabric here and there, adjusting the fit with practiced movements.
"It's perfect!" Lucy declared. "The cut really suits you."
Erza gave a firm nod of approval. Gray and Natsu exchanged knowing grins, clearly pleased with the results.
Kai looked at each of them in turn, his hands naturally finding their way into the comfortable pockets. "Well, thanks" he said quietly. "I really appreciate it, and I love it"
Mirajane waved her hand dismissively. "Oh stop, that's nothing" Her blue eyes sparkled as she took in his appearance - the blond hair, blue eyes, and now perfectly fitted sleeveless hoodie. "Besides, you look much better like this."
The guild members dispersed, returning to their usual spots and activities. Natsu challenged Gray to another fight, Lucy rolling her eyes.
Kai stood there in his new clothing. And he felt good. A genuine smile spread across his face.
He placed his hand over his heart, feeling the steady rhythm beneath. In that spot, he knew his parents and brother resided, a forever part of him. His first family.
His gaze drifted across the guild hall, taking in the atmosphere that was typical Fairy Tail. The constant background noise of laughter, friendly arguments, and casual conversation.
This was his new family. Not a replacement for what he'd lost, but an addition - an expansion of his heart that he never expected to find. Here, among these rowdy, loyal, and sometimes crazy mages, Kai could finally start his new life.
