Chapter 2
Godzilla Emergency Meeting
United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA
August 31st, 2004, 3:00 PM
A sense of dread filled the Security Council chamber as global representatives and leaders, politicians and military officials, convened the meeting to address the recent development from North Korea. It had been five years since the return of Godzilla, as well as the battle between him and Gamera that left the city of Tokyo in ruins.
Since then, the Japanese government and its allies had been working to combat the Godzilla threat, and ensure the safety of other cities to prevent another incident akin to Tokyo's destruction, or the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But with each passing day, more concerns were arising.
"Pyongyang has been trying to cover up the incident." A South Korean representative commented, "They're telling their own people there was a malfunction with the bomb, and that an underground nuclear reactor had gone haywire."
"And yet, Godzilla was sighted in the region." The Chinese delegate remarked, "Satellite footage confirms this, and there were witnesses in the area, even though Tyrong wasn't warned."
"The press has been calling this the biggest disaster since Chernobyl." Russia's ambassador quipped, "We've been on alert for five years since Tokyo was attacked, since the connection was made between Godzilla and the disappearances of our nuclear-powered submarines, and Moscow has considered re-engaging in the development of atomic weaponry."
"I say no to nuclear weapons!" The British representative said, "Atomics are what landed us in this bloody crisis to begin with. It was because of the atom bomb and the H-bomb that Godzilla was unleashed upon the world, and it was the bomb that freed Gamera from his icy tomb."
"Godzilla is the enemy, not Gamera." Japanese representative Kuosho said urgently, "Gamera doesn't attack unless provoked, and he hasn't attacked civilization in decades, even though his appearances at our nuclear plants are a different story."
Teiler, the American representative, raised a hand. "How do we content with Godzilla at this stage?" He inquired, "In the past year, he's grown larger, and become increasingly more radioactive as well as powerful. As we've seen, especially during the attack in North Korea, Godzilla is sporting these... glowing orange marks on his body, including his spines."
"We fear he will continue to become more unstoppable as he continues to feed on radioactivity." Another Japanese representative said grimly.
"Our efforts to weaponize nuclear energy against Godzilla have failed." The Australian ambassador quipped, "In fact, our scientists aren't even sure about how we can defeat him, even with conventional, biological, or scientific means."
"Giving up is not an option!" A Japanese military leader yelled, "Godzilla is a threat to our future! He's a walking nuclear bomb! How many more cities have to be destroyed until we've neutralized him?!"
"And what's to stop him from attacking my country again?!" The North Korean ambassador screamed, "He could attack Pyongyang any day, and Gamera could show up, making things worse! Meanwhile, our glorious leader is dead, and the government is scrambling to find a successor!"
"You should have never conducted your own nuclear program!" A South Korean representative told his North Korean counterpart.
"And how long until Beijing is under attack?!" China's top military diplomat shouted, "Our country could be ground zero for another destructive battle between Godzilla and Gamera! China's military forces are on high alert every day, and we are unsure if we can count on the USA or other nations to aid us when the attack happens!"
"Wherever Godzilla attacks, we will do what we can to help our allies." An American general said, "And NATO is prepared as well. An attack on one nation is an attack on all of NATO. America will protect its allies in Europe and in Asia, no matter who the enemy is, and no matter the outcome!"
"However, the only question now is: When will Godzilla strike next, and where will he strike again?" Another Japanese representative took the floor, "We've been tracking him after the attack in North Korea, but he's vanished off the radar."
"Intelligence submarines are searching everywhere in the Pacific." Teiler said, "As soon as Godzilla's spotted, we will know."
"We're keeping an eye out for Gamera." Kuosho told him and the other representatives, "He was last spotted flying near the Bering Sea, as if he's waiting for someone or looking for something. Gamera's vanished off the radar as well, but we're prepared for when he and Godzilla make their next appearance."
