Chapter 9

The Countdown to The Explosion

Nuclear Emergency Calculations, continuous assessment of dangerous radiation levels and Godzilla-related nuclear activity.

Analysis update, 13 hours and 15 minutes. Previous updates: 1 hour and forty minutes ago.

Godzilla Energy Output: Sigma 99.79%

Inevitability of Nuclear Explosion: 00:15:21

Somewhere else, a computer ran immense calculations, all correlating to the increase in Godzilla's radiation levels. Minutes ticked by, and the text appeared, complete with the readings as a warning sound went off.

Every second on the clock, the computer continued to calculate, and the results often changed as a minute passed. The technicians and experts watched, and readouts on Godzilla continued to come through, as the clock continued to tick down the minutes until the the inevitable happened.

It was 1:13 P.M. in the afternoon in Japan, and the rest of Asia, while it was morning in other regions like America.

By all calculations, Godzilla's explosion would occur before the stroke of 1:30 in the afternoon, Japanese time. Everyone was preparing, taking precautions, and all eyes were on the clock with dread. Military leaders met in a secure location, considering another attack on the kaiju, while some elected to end the attacks.

From what had been gathered in recent readings, another operation against Godzilla would likely trigger the explosion in moments. And yet, there was another factor...

Dust rolled down the slopes of Mount Fuji, and the hillside quaked. Birds took flight from nearby trees, and a monstrous howl echoed from the smoking volcanic crater, like smoke and ash unleashed by a building eruption. A hint of lava rose into the air, and steam continued to billow forth.

Gamera raised his head as he emerged from the volcano, staring at the sky, and the titanic turtle bellowed a majestic roar. He could sense that Godzilla was approaching, and Gamera could feel that his rival was resonating with a strong quantity of radiation.

He knew an impending catastrophe when he sensed it, and the Atlantean giant was ready to ensure the explosion caused no harm to the world.

Godzilla was coming to destroy Gamera, and the turtle didn't know what else would go down if the titanic, nuclear-empowered dinosaur gained the upper hand in their confrontation. No matter the outcome, no matter how it played out, Godzilla was going down. Gamera was strong, and he rarely thought of what would happen if the nuclear beast managed to best him in combat.

Atlantis had fallen long ago, and the turtle was the last survivor who carried it's memory.

Even if he was defeated, Gamera would find a way to survive. As long as he remained alive, the memory of Atlantis survived as well. He was the living embodiment of that history, and Gamera had preserved Atlantis' culture during the centuries he'd slumbered in the ice, before the explosion had freed him.

From a distance, he could see the approaching, glowing mass that was Godzilla, irradiated to the point of no return. Gamera was not about to run like before, not when he was stronger than ever. The turtle was no longer going to run, and there was nowhere else to go.
