Jay felt like his heart had stopped. Here she was, standing right in front of him, mere inches away from him. He hadn't seen her in so long, but now, standing there, it was like no time had passed at all.
"Erin," he breathed, his voice thick with emotion. "Hi."
Her eyes widened as she took in the sight of him. He looked the same, but somehow different too. There was a maturity to him now, a seriousness that hadn't been there before.
"What...what are you doing here?" she asked, stepping out of the doorway and letting him come inside.
Jay stepped over the threshold, closing the door behind him. He glanced around the room, noting the sparse furnishings and the lack of personal touches. It looked like she hadn't been here long.
"I...I came to see you," he said, his voice low. "I needed to talk to you."
Her brow furrowed in confusion as she took a seat on the edge of the bed. "You...you needed to talk to me?" she echoed, her voice hesitant. "It's been three years, Jay. Why now?"
Jay took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. How could he explain everything he was feeling, everything that had been bottled up inside him for all these years?
"I...I've missed you," he said, his voice rough. "I know I don't deserve to say that after everything that happened, everything I did. But it's the truth. I've missed you every day since you left."
Erin's eyes widened, her heart skipping a beat at his words. She had missed him too, more than we cared to admit. Hearing him say it out loud, though...it brought up all the pain and hurt that had led to her abandoning him and the city.
"You...you don't get to say that," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "You don't get to say you've missed me after what you did."
Jay flinched at the pain in her voice. He knew he deserved her anger, her hurt. He had hurt her deeply, and he knew it would take time for her to forgive him.
"You're right," he said, his voice low. "I know I don't deserve to say it. But it's the truth. I've spent three years trying to forget you, trying to move on. And I just...I can't. I can't pretend I don't still love you."
Her heart fluttered in her chest at his words. She had always known Jay loved her, but hearing him say it now, after all this time, was hard to hear.
"You...you still love me?" she asked, her voice choked. "After everything that happened, everything I did? You still love me?"
Jay took a step closer to her, his eyes never leaving hers. "I never stopped," he said, his voice rough. "I know I'm probably the last person you want to hear this from, but I just...I had to tell you. I had to let you know that I still love you. And I don't expect you to say it back, I don't expect you to feel the same way, but I just...I had to tell you-."
Jay gets up and wipes the tears away and starts to feel it getting harder to breathe.
Erin watched the emotions play across his face, his voice breaking as he confessed his love for her. Her heart ached for him, for the pain and loneliness he had been feeling all this time. She wanted to tell him she still loved him, that she had never stopped...but her own pain and anger held her back.
"Jay, wait-" she tried to say, but he was already stepping back, wiping away his tears with a shaky hand.
Jay could feel his throat tightening, his breathing shallow and ragged. The emotions he had been holding in for years were finally overflowing, washing over him in a tidal wave. He was terrified he was going to lose her again, that she would reject him, and the thought was almost enough to send him into a full-blown panic attack.
"I can't...I can't do this," he choked out, his hand rubbing his chest as he took a step back.
Erin saw the panic in his eyes, the desperation in his voice, and her heart clenched in her chest. She knew the pain and anxiety he was feeling all too well.
"Jay, wait, you're having a panic attack," she said, standing up from the bed and moving towards him. "Just...just sit down and take some deep breaths."
Jay's vision tunnelled as he tried to catch his breath, his chest heaving and his head spinning. He stumbled back a few more steps, his legs weak and unsteady.
"I...I can't...breathe..." he gasped out, his voice ragged. "I can't...can't..."
Erin saw him sway on his feet, his body shaking and his face pale. She knew she had to act quickly before he passed out.
"Sit down," she said firmly, grabbing his arm and guiding him to the bed. "Just...just sit down and focus on your breathing. I'm right here, okay? I'm right here."
Jay's breathing was still shaky, his body racked with sobs as he sat on the edge of the bed. He looked up at Erin, his eyes swollen with pain and uncertainty.
"Do you...do you still love me?" he choked out, his voice hoarse. "Or...or have I ruined everything forever?"
Erin's heart broke at the sight of him, the pain etched so deeply on his face. She had never seen him so vulnerable, so raw.
She moved closer to him, sitting down beside him on the bed. She took both of his hands in hers, holding them tight.
"I...I never stopped loving you, Jay," she said, her voice soft. "I tried to forget you, but I couldn't. You're...you're a part of me. You always have been."
Jay's body was still trembling, his sobs wracking his frame as Erin drew him in, holding him tight. Her hand came up to cup the back of his head, guiding it down to her shoulder.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his tears falling like waterfalls as he clung to her, desperate for her comfort and warmth. He felt like a child, so vulnerable and exposed, but he couldn't bring himself to care. All he wanted was to feel her arms around him, to know that she was there, that she was there for him.
This is slowly getting toward an argument between Erin, Hailey and most of all: Jay!
