The world seemed to pulse with light and energy as Regina slowly opened her eyes, her breath hitching as if she had been underwater and was finally allowed to breathe again. The sterile white hospital sheets glowed faintly in the golden hue of the setting sun streaming through the windows, painting the room in a surreal warmth. Her body felt heavy, her mind foggy, but the ache in her chest had lifted, replaced by a fluttering sense of peace.
The first thing she saw was him. Magnus—but not the Magnus she had known during the curse. His face was softer, his expression flooded with worry, and his eyes brimmed with something deeper, more genuine. She blinked, trying to bring his features into focus, her heart skipping as the realization dawned.
"Emmett?" she whispered, her voice hoarse and trembling.
He leaned closer, his hand reaching for hers as relief washed over his face. "Regina, are you okay? What just happened?" His voice cracked, betraying the whirlwind of emotions surging within him.
Her lips parted in a weak smile. "We broke the curse," she murmured, her eyes glistening. "By True Love's Kiss."
The words seemed to hang in the air, a soft echo of the impossible victory they had just achieved. Emmett's expression shifted as realization dawned. Relief, disbelief, and a spark of joy flickered across his face, the weight of the curse lifting visibly from his shoulders.
"We did it," he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper. And then, louder, with a growing sense of triumph, "We did it! The curse is gone!"
Before Regina could stop him, Emmett shot to his feet, a bolt of energy coursing through him. His eyes sparkled with excitement as he turned toward the door. "I have to tell them. My parents—they need to know!"
"Emmett, wait—" Regina called after him, but he was already gone, his footsteps echoing down the hallway. She slumped back against the pillows, the edges of her smile fading as a strange unease crept into her chest.
Outside the hospital, Emmett burst into the cool evening air, his heart racing as he scanned the crowd. People were beginning to gather, their faces a mixture of confusion and cautious joy as the curse's effects unraveled. His eyes locked onto Snow White and Prince Charming standing near the square, their gazes darting around as if trying to piece together the fragments of their lives.
"Mom! Dad!" Emmett's voice rang out as he ran toward them, his arms wide. He threw himself into their embrace, holding them tightly. "It's me!"
Snow and Charming exchanged bewildered glances, their arms loosely encircling him. Snow was the first to speak, her voice tentative. "Emmett? I… I don't understand. Who are you?"
Emmett stepped back, his expression shifting to one of urgency. "It's me—Emma." He took a breath, his words tumbling out in a rush. "The curse, it… I didn't embrace my powers after Mom died. Everything got messed up. Magnus—what you knew me as—was part of the curse. But now it's over. We broke it."
Charming frowned, his brow furrowing deeply. "Emma? How is this even possible?"
"It's a long story," Emmett admitted, his voice tinged with exhaustion. "But I'll explain everything. Right now, just know that we're free. Regina and I… we broke the curse."
Snow's expression softened as she reached up to touch his face, her eyes shining with tentative hope. "You're really here. My baby."
A smile broke across Emmett's face. "I'm here," he whispered, and for a brief moment, everything felt right.
That evening, the town square transformed into a vibrant celebration. Lanterns strung between buildings bathed the crowd in soft, golden light, and music filled the air as people danced and laughed. Tables were piled high with food, and the energy of relief and joy was infectious. For the first time in years, laughter replaced the shadows that had hung over Storybrooke.
At the heart of it all stood Emmett, Regina, and Henry. The townsfolk surrounded them, cheering and offering their thanks. Granny raised her cup of cider high, her grin wide. "You've done it again, Savior! You saved us all!"
Emmett laughed, raising his hands. "It's still me, I promise. Just… in a slightly different package."
The crowd chuckled, and Regina allowed herself a rare smile. For the first time in a long while, hope flickered in her chest, warm and steady.
But amidst the celebration, small moments hinted that something wasn't quite right.
While greeting the townsfolk, Emmett paused mid-sentence, his hand moving to his temple as if struck by a sudden headache. He blinked rapidly, shaking his head.
"Are you okay?" Regina asked, leaning close, her voice low and concerned.
"Yeah," he replied quickly, forcing a smile. "Just a little overwhelmed, I guess."
Later, as he passed the dwarfs recounting tales of their cursed lives, Grumpy clapped him on the back. "You saved our butts again, Savior! How does it feel?"
Emmett opened his mouth to reply but froze, his gaze lingering on Grumpy as if seeing him for the first time. For a brief moment, Grumpy's face seemed unfamiliar, like a stranger's.
"Everything okay?" Grumpy asked, his grin fading.
"Yeah," Emmett said quickly, forcing another smile. "Just… a lot to take in."
Grumpy nodded knowingly. "I hear ya. Breaking a curse isn't easy on the mind. You'll be fine."
But Emmett lingered, the unease gnawing at him. Something about the celebration felt distant, almost unreal.
As the night wound down, Regina and Emmett walked hand-in-hand back to her home. The streets were quiet, the echoes of music and laughter fading into the cool night air.
In the quiet warmth of her bedroom, they shared a moment of vulnerability. Regina leaned into Emmett's chest, her voice soft. "For so long, I didn't believe this was possible. You, me, Henry… a family."
Emmett cupped her face, his expression earnest. "It is possible. We made it through everything—the curse, my mistakes, my doubts. And we're still here."
Their love for each other, raw and unguarded, culminated in a moment of deep connection, a release of the pain and tension that had held them captive for so long. They found comfort in one another, unaware that this night would bring more than just healing—it would spark the creation of a new life.
Regina awoke to an unusual silence, the warmth beside her replaced by the cool emptiness of untouched sheets. Frowning, she sat up, her gaze falling on Emmett, who was sitting on the edge of the bed with his head buried in his hands. His shoulders were tense, his breathing uneven, and the sight sent a ripple of concern through her.
"Emmett?" she asked softly, her voice still thick with sleep. "What's wrong?"
He turned to her slowly, his expression blank and distant, as if she were a stranger he'd never seen before. For a moment, Regina felt her heart stop. The man before her wasn't the Emmett who had held her so tenderly just hours earlier.
"Why am I here?" he asked, his voice quiet but filled with confusion. His eyes darted around the room, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. "What… what happened?"
Regina frowned, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. "Emmett, it's me—Regina," she said carefully. "Don't you remember? We broke the curse last night."
His brow furrowed, a flicker of unease crossing his face. "The curse?" He shook his head, taking a step back. "I don't—" His gaze landed on her, and he hesitated, as though something about her was both familiar and unsettling. "I don't understand. Why were we—" His voice caught as he gestured to the bed. "Why were we sleeping next to each other?"
Regina's breath hitched, panic beginning to creep into her chest. "No," she whispered, standing slowly. "No, this can't be happening. Emmett, please—you have to remember."
But he shook his head again, more adamantly this time, his confusion turning to discomfort. "I don't… I don't know you," he said, his voice trembling. "I don't know why I'm here."
Before she could reach for him, he turned and fled the room, leaving Regina frozen in place. The sound of the door closing echoed in the silence, and her legs gave way as she sank onto the bed, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Not again," she whispered to the empty room, her voice breaking. "Please, not again."
Emmett's feet carried him through the town, though he wasn't sure where he was going. The streets looked familiar, but there was a strange haze in his mind, a sense that something was just out of reach. He wasn't entirely sure why, but he found himself standing in front of Snow and Charming's house. His hand raised before he could think, and he knocked urgently.
The door opened to reveal Snow, her expression quickly shifting from pleasant surprise to concern. "Emmett?" she asked, taking in his disheveled appearance. "What's wrong? Where's Regina?"
The question caught him off guard, and he hesitated, struggling to form an answer. "I… I don't know," he admitted, his voice quiet.
Snow and Charming exchanged a worried glance, and Charming stepped forward. "Come inside," he said gently, placing a hand on Emmett's shoulder and guiding him into the house.
As the door closed behind them, Regina remained in her room, staring at the empty doorway where Emmett had stood. She clenched her fists, determination hardening in her chest as she wiped her tears away. Whatever had happened to Emmett, whatever force had taken him from her again, she would find it. And she would fight for him.
