Chapter 6

Kari laid in her bed. Her eye lids were drooping. She had finished her phone call with Davis almost an hour ago. She was sure she heard the door unlatch. She was sure she heard someone come in. The room was empty except for her. She had thought about calling Davis back. However something kept her from picking up her phone. She felt removed from her body. She was exhausted. She could hear the trickling of water surrounding her bed. She didn't care. She was cold but she was alone. Kari decided this was the best chance she had at getting sleep. Her eyes closed and she could feel herself falling. Her heart rate felt like it was sinking deep into her chest. Her body was falling and soon it was on the ground. Kari's hands dug into sand. It was soothing. She laid there a moment her back on the sand and she allowed her left hand to sink into the sand and scoop up a handful. She then let the sand trickle through her fingers. For so many weeks this place had been a haunting terrifying place. At this moment, Kari was numb. She continued picking sand up in her hand while lying in it. Water was lapping at the shore a short distance from where she was lying. She could feel a gentle tickle running up and down her right arm. She had a moment of feeling it was odd. However it was rhythmic and as she played with the sand she almost enjoyed the tickle. She looked upward. The grey hazy clouds were moving slowly overhead. She watched the clouds and listened to the lapping of the waves. Her mind was empty and she felt no danger or urgency to move or escape. The clouds started to get darker. The grey turned darker and darker. Kari watched the tickling turned into stroking. A hand stroking her from her shoulder down to her fingers. Kari allowed it. The clouds started spinning and a whisper was in her ear,

"If you go it will stop." Kari's lips parted. She breathed in. She felt a breath on her lips.

"Come, light." The voice spoke. Kari felt her chest rise towards the voice. She was ready. She wanted to go. She wanted to allow this feeling to be forever. The breath was closer to her lips. Almost like a phantom kiss. Kari felt her body move upwards towards the voice and towards the darkening clouds.

Kari felt a small warmth on her left cheek. She looked slowly over towards the water. Beyond the dark ocean, there was a small yellow light. Kari looked at it. She felt the stroking grasp her arm. Kari kept her eyes on the yellow light.

"Kari." There was a voice in the light. It was calling to her. Kari lifted her left arm. She reached towards the light.

"Kari." The voice was so faded. She wanted to go to it. She wanted to know who it was.

"Kari!" The voice shouted. Kari's eyes shot open. The light! She needed the light! She breathed in and reached harder towards the light. The phantom hand gripped her right arm harder. Pain started shooting through her. Kari yelled out.

"HELP!"

Kari gasped as she came to. She was on the bed in the hotel room. She was panting heavily. She put her left hand to her forehead. She was dripping in sweat. She then tried to move her right hand to her chest. She couldn't. Something was holding her arm in place. Kari whipped her head to look to the right. The woman was there. Kari screamed. She scrambled away but the woman held on.

"Come girl come and it will all go away." The woman sounded deranged, far more deranged than she had previously.

"Let go of me!" Kari cried. The woman pulled on Kari trying to pull her closer to herself. Kari growled

"I said let go!" Kari cried she yanked her arm out of the woman's grasp. She rolled over and the force caused her to fall off the bed. The woman hissed and Kari quickly scrambled to her feet. She turned and made her way to the front door. Her hands shook as she tried to grasp the handle and push it down. The woman moved towards her,

"It won't stop unless you go!" Kari forcefully pushed the handle down and ripped open the door. She barrelled out into the hallway.

"Jesus Christ!" Kari slammed into Jade. Jade looked offended. Kari tried to step out of the way but she whipped around seeing the woman holding the door open staring at her. Kari stepped back. She backed into Jade.

"Kari can you fuck off?!" Jade said in a harsh tone.

"Jade!" TK's voice was stern. Kari quickly stepped back away from Jade and TK.

"You know what TK, Fuck you." Jade marched towards the door. Kari watched as Jade passed through the woman. Jade entered the hotel room and slammed the door. Kari was panting. She struggled to catch her breath.

"I hear you kids!" Kari's eyes bugged out. It was Mr. Kimo. He was coming. TK reacted quicker than Kari. He grabbed her hand and pulled her down the hallway. Kari pulled back.

"This is the way to his room." Kari whispered. She looked back. The woman was no where to be seen. She then looked down at TK's hand holding her wrist. She nodded, she had forgotten his touch made the woman go away. The door to Mr. Kimos room started jiggling. He was unlocking the dead bolt. Kari's eyes went wide they were about to be caught, they would be sent home. TK suddenly reached past Kari and opened a door. Kari thought it was to his room. TK pushed Kari inside and Kari lost her footing and started falling. She hit a shelf. Kari steadied herself and then realized what she had run into. It was a shelf with cleaning supplies on it. Kari stood tall and looked around the room. She was standing in a linen closet. She looked to the door. TKs back was to her as he pressed his body against the door.

"TK?" Kari whispered. TK put a finger up indicating Kari needed to be quiet. Kari slowed her breathing and listened. There were footsteps. Just outside. Kari felt scared. Please don't open the door. Please don't open the door.

Kari listened. The footsteps passed. Kari stepped towards TK. TK kept his eyes on the door. He reached a hand back and grabbed Kari's wrist.

"Shh, He has to come back." Kari nodded. TK held her wrist. Kari looked at his hand holding her. She noticed his grey shirt sleeve had come up a little bit. TK's arm was dark, it looked like a bruise. Kari moved her other hand towards TK's forearm. She was just about to touch when there was a thud. Kari retracted her hand and stepped back. TK stepped back as well. The two teens stood still. They weren't sure what the thud was. There were foot steps and then they heard the click of a keycard successfully unlocking a door. They then heard the door open and after a moment, the door shut. Kari felt like her body could crumble. She stayed on her feet but everything felt dizzying. TK let go of her wrist and turned to look at her. Kari looked up at TK, for a moment she could see two TK's standing in front of her. She expected TK to come towards her. To check on her. He didn't. TK was looking at her, but he kept a space between them.

"So, are you okay?" TK asked. Kari stared at him a moment. Her vision focused and she was able to see him clearer. There was something different about him. Kari studied him a moment. She then looked down at her hands.

"uhm, I'm not sure how to explain it." Kari said in a low voice. TK moved past her. He then sat on the ground with his back pressing against the shelf of cleaning products.

"I'm not in a hurry." TK said flatly. He looked detached. The warmth Kari usually felt from him was absent. Kari walked to the door. She slowly sat down. Her back against the door. She looked up, the two teens sat across from each other. Kari watched TK run a hand through his blonde hair. He wasn't looking at Kari. Kari took a moment to study her best friend. He was wearing a grey long sleeve shirt. His plaid Pyjama pants were red and blue. She looked at his hands. He had his hands resting on his bent knees. There was something enticing about TK's hands. They looked strong. Kari resisted biting her bottom lip. TK's hands were always something Kari felt herself drawn too. They were big but not too big. Her hands always felt small in his but taken care of. His hands would bring forth a touch that would make Kari feel like nothing could touch her. No one could harm her. Her stomach fluttered. She looked up at TK's chest. Again the similar draw to his hands flooded her mind. She looked at his neck and then his jaw. Her cheeks felt flushed. What is happening to me?

TK's eyes met hers and Kari looked away. She felt too exposed. Embarrassment was written all over her face. She resisted the urge to smile. She knew what TK would say. The little flirt would not let her get away with checking him out. Kari looked down waiting for TK to say his line, to make the situation light. Silence and then more silence. Kari frowned, she started to feel uncomfortable. TK said nothing. Kari exhaled and looked up at him. He was staring at her. He was staring at her in almost the same way Tai would stare at her when she had told a lie. Kari started to feel mad. Her eyes narrowed and she stared back at TK. Her brother was stubborn and so was she.

"I don't mind waiting." TK said. Kari frowned.

"It's not easy TK." Kari spat. She wasn't sure what he wanted from her. She watched TK look upwards and sigh.

"Start by telling me what happened." Kari exhaled.

"Fine." She brought her knees to her chest.

"I was on the phone with Davis. We were chatting it was good." Kari thought back to the conversation. She felt her cheeks warm. It had been a good conversation. Kari looked at TK. She thought she saw him scowl, or wince. Kari continued.

"I hung up when I thought I heard Jade come back." Kari looked down.

"I could have sworn the door opened and someone came in." Kari heard TK shift. She didn't look at him. Her mind was recreating the situation.

"The room was cold and there was water, dark water all around my bed. I expected the woman, you know, to be there." Kari shook her head.

"But she wasn't. I was alone." Kari's eyes glazed over. She could see herself on the hotel bed. The water, the cold, she could feel it all. Kari then continued.

"I wanted to sleep. I felt like I could. So I closed my eyes. My body fell away and I was on the sand." Kari could see her body laying on the sand. Her hand moving through the sand rhythmically. She continued speaking, her mind and body going into a sort of trance.

"There was a voice. Telling me to come." Kari could see the clouds could almost feel the tickling.

"So I did." Kari felt in a dream state. She could no longer see the room around her. She could just see the clouds circling and darkening. She focused on the darkness, her body started to feel weightless.

"KARI!" Suddenly TK dove forward and grabbed her. He pulled her into his chest and wrapped his arms around her. Kari felt her breath come back into her chest. She felt TK adjust her. She felt her heart rate increase. She blinked and she could see TK's shirt. His light grey shirt was a calming change from the dark clouds she had been seeing. She felt warmth on her cheek. She breathed in and could smell TK, her TK. She started shaking. She wasn't sure what had just happened. TK was holding her and she was snuggled up with him. She looked down at her body. TK's hands were gripping her holding her tighter to him. Kari closed her eyes, she loved his hands. She took a moment to feel safe and protected. She then opened her eyes and could hear TK's breathing was heavy. She listened and his heart beat was pounding.

"What happened? Are you okay?" Kari asked now concerned. She wanted to sit up to look at him. TK held her tightly and she couldn't move. TK inhaled,

"Kari, you were disappearing. They were taking you." TK whispered into her hair. Kari's eyes went wide.

"I was disappearing?" Kari asked she started feeling afraid. She realized what had been happening in her hotel room. She gasped and pushed off of TK's chest. She sat up. TK loosened his grip on her allowing her to sit up. The two stared at each other.

"TK I was there. I was in the dark ocean. They had me. They were taking me!" Kari felt tears fall down her cheeks. She started hyperventilating.

"TK, I wanted them to take me." She started to cry. She couldn't believe what had happened to her. How close she came to letting the Dark Ocean take her. Her head was spinning. TK put his hands on her cheeks and pulled her face towards his own. His forehead pressed against hers.

"I won't let them EVER take you. I won't let you get hurt!" TK spoke with anger. An anger Kari had never heard from him. Kari nodded. Tears continued to fall. TK closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Kari followed. The two breathed slowly. Kari felt her world come back into focus. She slowly opened her eyes and TK did the same. The two stared at one another. TK used his thumbs to wipe the tears from Kari's cheeks. Kari breathed out. The world was still. The two teens continued staring at one another. Kari wondered if TK's eyes had always been this vibrant blue. There was this moment the two staring at each other, TK's hand gently holding Kari's face. Their foreheads pressed together. Kari's lips quivered. She stared at him hoping, wanting. A phone chimed and Kari and TK flinched. TK dropped his hands from Kari's face. Kari moved back breaking the connection the two of them had. Kari now had her legs on either side of TK's legs. She was straddling him. She felt a little strange. How did I get like this?

She thought about moving. Maybe going back to her spot across from TK. TK checked his phone. He sighed and clicked the top of his phone. He looked upwards and then looked at Kari. Kari was now feeling embarrassed. She started shuffling backwards. TK smirked. He put his hands on her arms stopping her.

"I, er, don't mind." He said a little awkwardly. Kari stared at him.

"Oh." She said in a surprised voice. TK's eyes went wide.

"I mean no! It's okay I don't want you to feel uncomfortable. You can, uhm, hop off. If you'd like." The two teens stared at each other. Kari was unsure what to do. She started to lean in slightly. TK's phone chimed again. Kari stopped. TK let out a low growl. He looked at his phone and Kari leaned back.

"Is Jade okay?" Kari asked. She felt a little defeated. TK looked at her. He stared at Kari and then looked down at his phone.

"Oh uhm, she's fine." TK said in a quiet voice. Kari nodded. Kari moved off of TK's lap. She then sat on her knees facing TK next to his legs. She stared at the floor inspecting the carpet. TK wasn't typing. Kari looked up. His phone was in front of his face but he wasn't looking at it. His eyes were looking at the door. Kari turned and looked. She couldn't see anything there. Kari sighed. She was starting to feel tired. Very tired. Kari started to slide back and stand. TK's fingers slid across the floor. He grabbed onto Kari's hand. Kari paused. The two looked at one another. Kari sat back down on her knees. TK then let go.

"Uhm, are you, uh…" TK stuttered Kari raised an eyebrow. It wasn't like TK to stutter. He put his phone down.

"I'm not sure it's, er, a good idea for you to… you know…." TK stopped his face was flushed. This was a side of TK Kari was not used to. Her friend was normally so composed. Kari leaned forward watching him.

"TK?" Kari asked. She almost felt concerned. Is he getting sick?

TK cleared his throat.

"Maybe we hang out here a little longer?" He spoke fast. Kari almost didn't catch what he said. She looked around the linen closet.

"Oh." Kari said and TK spoke again.

"I think that might be good." He said and Kari was confused.

"So you want to stay in here? In this…" Kari gestured around then.

"Closet?" She asked. TK nodded. Kari nodded as well.

"I, uh, guess." She replied. TK cleared his throat and sat up straight.

"Uhm, just Mr. Kimo-" he stopped he looked like he was really struggling. Kari gave him a soft smile. The two looked at each other. TK visibly relaxed.

"I'm worried about you." He said honestly. Kari continued to smile.

"Can I be honest?" She asked. TK nodded.

"I'm worried about me too." She said quietly.

The two were silent. Kari looked down. She was thinking about the Dark ocean. She was scared though, she wasn't sure if just thinking about it would call them. She shuddered. There was a small movement on the ground. Kari looked as TK inched his fingers along the ground. He was moving them slowly. Kari watched them out of the corner of her eye. Neither teen spoke. Kari watched as TK's fingers got closer and closer to her hand which was on the floor. TK brushed her fingers with his own. He then retracted his hand. Kari waited, she wanted him to do it again. Kari watched as TK twitched his fingers. Then, he started inching them towards her. He brushed her fingers with his own. He went to pull back when Kari stretched her fingers out touching his. The two didn't look at one another. Kari kept her eyes on the floor. She moved to watch their fingers. They slowly started touching and caressing each other. Kari felt butterflies in her stomach. She then reached further towards TK's hand. Her hand slid under his. She flipped her hand so their palms were touching. she then started lightly tickling his palm and forearm with her delicate fingers. TK flexed his hand allowing Kari to caress his hand. She kept her eyes focused on their hands. Kari was afraid to move. She didn't want to break the contact. TK adjusted his hand and slid his finger in between Kari's. He slowly squeezed his hand and intertwined his and hers together. Kari felt like she might gasp. She held it together. The feeling was electrifying. She didn't know a touch could make her body feel so alive. Kari wanted to close her eyes. Wanted TK to touch more of her. She slowly, looked up. He was staring at her. Their eyes met. Kari felt unable to speak. TK looked calm. His eyes softened. He looked in control. Kari felt her whole body go weak just staring at him. TK brought their intertwined fingers to his lips. He gently kissed Kari's fingers. He did one then two then three kisses. Each kiss on a different finger. Kari felt her stomach do somersaults. She wanted more. She wanted so much more. TK looked up from their fingers into Kari's eyes.

"I think, you should stay with me tonight." He said it in a whisper. It felt like a command the most beautiful and enticing command. Kari nodded. She didn't trust herself to speak. TK pulled her towards him. Kari allowed it. TK's phone chimed. Kari paused. She sighed ready for TK to break contact. To answer it. TK continued to pull Kari right to his chest. She laid sideways. She nestled into his chest. He let go of her hand to hold her close to him. The phone chimed again. Kari breathed out.

"TK?" TK held her tight.

"No. It's just you and me right now. Everything else can wait." Kari couldn't believe how safe she felt. She had another feeling flooding her body. A feeling she couldn't quite identify. She closed her eyes inhaling TK's scent.

"I've got you Kar." He whispered. Then Kari felt TK do something. She felt him kiss the top of her head. Kari froze. She wasn't sure she felt that correctly. Did he kiss me?!

Kari wondered. TK started rubbing her arms.

"Close your eyes Kari. I'll wake you up before anyone finds us." Kari felt her eyelids droop. There was a part of her that felt awake that didn't want this sensation that was going on in her body to end. Her exhaustion won. She listened to TK's heart beat and could feel him pressing his lips to her head. For this moment she wanted nothing else in the world, than to stay in this moment forever.

TK watched Kari sleep. His body was on fire. It hurt, a lot. But there was also this sensation. This euphoric sensation racing through him. She was in his arms. She was with him. TK stole a few more kisses. Her hair smelt of strawberries. The sensation filled his nose. She shifted as she slept. Her body was pressed up against him. His arms burned. His chest was starting to burn as well. He wouldn't break contact. He looked up to bite his lip. The sensations were contradicting each other. TK looked down at Kari. Her pyjamas were a soft pink. She looked so cute. She shifted again. She pushed her body into him and TK felt something stiffen. His eyes bugged out. This couldn't be happening. TK started to feel slightly panicked. This could not be happening especially while Kari was in his arms. He quickly looked upward he needed to think of something neutral something not…Kari. His mind raced.

Basketball? Ball going into the hoop. No a park a nice park no one around just green grass. Kari shifted again. His eyes bugged out. Her arm was pressed right up against him. He needed to move her. This was dangerous territory. He slowly lifted her. He was worried she'd stir. She stayed asleep. He was still stiff. He quickly released one of his arms. He grabbed his phone that was on the floor. Distraction. Distraction.

He pressed the screen and the phone came to light. He saw the missed texts from Jade and then noticed the one from Matt.

Matt! Text Matt! He used his one hand and awkwardly scrolled through the messages. He found the unread message Matt had sent earlier that day. TK opened it.

TK are you okay? Can you check in on the others? Let me know if they're good?

TK took a moment. The pain in his body was not increasing anymore. It was the same burning. He sat up a little pulling Kari up with him. He looked at his phone and started to feel concerned.

Are the others okay? Wait? Why is Matt asking this?

TK started typing a response back. It was awkward with one hand but luckily the text predicted most of his words before he had to complete them.

Are you okay? What's going on?

TK paused. He looked down at Kari. He was about to text that they should talk. He thought back to his and Davis' fight in the garden. TK huffed. The three of them were going to work this out. He decided to leave his message as it was. He hit send. He then saw Jade's messages. He frowned. He felt bad, truly. Jade had asked to meet. They had gone downstairs and before he knew what was happening she was kissing him. TK had to take a moment and then gently pried her off of him. He tried to explain that he didn't feel that way about her. Jade broke into tears. TK winced thinking about Jade crying. It was uncomfortable, especially since he felt like he was the reason for her tears. TK put the phone down. He wrapped both arms around Kari. He felt selfish, but, he didn't care about Jade in this moment. He wanted to kiss Kari's head again. He stopped himself. Yes they were together, physically. But, TK still wasn't one hundred percent sure Kari like, liked him. His body turned to jelly thinking about their hands touching. He had a moment.

Is this it? Does she like me?

TK thought to himself. She moved a little. TK looked down at her. Her brow creased and TK started rubbing her. Trying to calm her from whatever dream she might be having. She slowly relaxed and settled back into a deep sleep. TK held her. He wanted to say words. He wanted to whisper to her and make a promise. His body ached. He couldn't, not now. He needed to know for sure. He needed to tell her when she could hear him. TK leaned his head back. Somehow, through the pain and raging hormones, TK found sleep.
