Chapter 21: Family Bonds and Breaking Points
A few weeks had passed, and though Miguel remained at large, life for Danny and Maria had continued. Maria was now working her last few shifts before starting her maternity leave, her belly showing the impending arrival of their twins. Her sister's safety was all she thought about, and as they awaited Miguel's trial, it felt like they were holding their breath—waiting for the final blow, or perhaps, for some closure.
One morning, as Danny and Maria arrived at the courthouse, Lt. Gee met them with an update. "Miguel's defense has issued subpoenas for both of you," he explained grimly, "likely an attempt to discredit Ana as a witness."
Erin had anticipated this and, as they sat down with her, she reviewed the plan. "They'll go after everything. They'll try to twist Ana's past actions and even drag your names into it to weaken her credibility." Erin looked at Maria, her expression both compassionate and firm. "Just answer honestly and keep your composure. They're fishing—don't give them more than they're owed."
Danny took Maria's hand under the table and squeezed it, silently reassuring her.
In the courtroom, Ana was escorted to her seat, sitting between two U.S. Marshals. She looked back nervously, her eyes landing on Maria. Maria tried to give her an encouraging nod, though her stomach churned. As Maria's gaze moved across the room, she froze. Carmen was there too, her arm still in a sling. Her face remained cold, her lips pressed into a thin line.
Maria leaned toward Danny, her voice low. "Do you think they're going to call her?"
Danny glanced at Carmen and then at Maria, his face hardening. "Maybe. But remember, if she does get called, she's not on trial. You're here to support Ana."
As the first witness was called, Maria felt the babies shifting restlessly. She rubbed her belly absentmindedly. Danny noticed and leaned close. "Hey, you okay? Babies moving a lot?"
Maria smiled, though it was tense. "Yeah, they're just keeping me company."
Danny grinned, placing his hand over hers. "Just hang in there. We're almost done here."
Soon, Danny was called to the stand, and Maria felt her nerves spike. He stood confidently, hands clasped as he faced the defense attorney, a tall, smug-looking man who took his time flipping through his notes before beginning.
"Detective Reagan, you've been involved in this case from the beginning. Do you think your position influences how the court perceives Ms. Ana Baez?"
Danny's expression didn't change. "I think the court considers facts and evidence, not opinions, sir."
The attorney smiled, circling around. "Of course. But given your relationship with Ana's sister, Ms. Maria Baez, do you feel you might be… biased in your views?"
Danny raised an eyebrow. "My relationship with Detective Maria Baez doesn't affect my objectivity as a detective. And my testimony here today isn't based on opinions—it's based on observations and evidence collected during this investigation."
The attorney didn't relent. "So you'd say you've remained entirely objective? Even given the fact that the alleged victim, Ana Baez, has had a history of incidents with her family?"
Danny's jaw tightened, but he didn't hesitate. "I'm here to speak on Miguel Gutierrez's actions, not my partner's family history. Ana Baez may have her past issues, but that doesn't change the fact that she's also a victim."
The attorney smirked, sensing an angle. "Interesting. So would you say you're here to defend Ana Baez, even with her prior involvement in crimes?"
Danny leaned forward, his voice steady and firm. "I'm here to present the facts. Ana made mistakes, but she's not on trial for those today. Today, we're here for Miguel's actions, and it's Ana who's brave enough to testify against him."
The attorney opened his mouth to speak, but Erin's voice rang out. "Objection. Detective Reagan's duty to this case isn't in question."
"Withdrawn," the defense attorney replied, with a look of disappointment.
Danny glanced briefly at Maria, giving her a slight, reassuring nod as he stepped down. A few minutes later, Maria was called.
Maria took her seat on the witness stand, bracing herself. Her heartbeat seemed to echo in her ears, but she kept her gaze steady as the defense attorney began.
"Ms. Baez, would you say you have a strong relationship with your sister Ana?"
Maria hesitated, choosing her words carefully. "We've had a complicated relationship, yes."
The attorney's voice sharpened, picking at her answer. "Complicated? Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'complicated'?"
Maria swallowed, feeling her pulse quicken. "Ana has made choices that hurt our family, and we've had our differences. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see justice served for what she's been through."
The attorney nodded slowly, as though carefully considering her words. "So you believe she's been victimized by Miguel Gutierrez, despite her own history with the law?"
"Yes," Maria replied, her voice unwavering. "Her mistakes don't justify what Miguel did to her. No one deserves that."
The attorney paced in front of her, holding her gaze. "Would you say that your family has… a pattern of difficult relationships? Perhaps due to some of the more personal history between you and your mother?"
Maria's stomach clenched at the mention of her mother. "My relationship with my mother has no bearing on this case. I'm here to support my sister."
The attorney raised an eyebrow. "Isn't it true that your mother holds you partially responsible for the tension in your family, stemming from an incident years ago?"
Maria's heart pounded, but she forced herself to remain calm. "I don't believe my family history has any relevance here. This is about Miguel Gutierrez's actions."
Erin rose to her feet, her voice cutting through the air. "Objection. The witness's family dynamics aren't relevant to the charges against Mr. Gutierrez."
"Withdrawn," the attorney said smoothly, glancing briefly at Carmen in the gallery before moving on.
Maria took a steadying breath as the questioning continued, but the attorney's tactics grew sharper. Every question seemed designed to imply that her family's problems discredited Ana's testimony. But Maria kept her composure, determined to keep the focus on Ana's need for justice.
Finally, her cross-examination ended, and Maria returned to her seat beside Danny, gripping his hand tightly.
Ana was called next. She looked back at Maria one last time before taking the stand, her face pale but resolute. The defense tried every angle they could, bringing up Ana's troubled history and portraying her as a spiteful sister looking to cause trouble. Ana took it all, absorbing each accusation without flinching, though her hands trembled slightly. When she had the chance to speak, she took a deep breath, looking across the room to Maria.
"I know I've hurt my sister… my family," Ana said, her voice soft but steady. "I did things I can never take back. But I'm here because I'm tired of running. I'm here because Miguel Gutierrez hurt me and countless others, and he needs to be held accountable."
As her testimony ended, there was a tense silence in the room. Then the judge called for a recess.
Erin led them to a private room where they could have a quiet lunch. Danny, Maria, and Erin sat down, but Maria winced suddenly, one hand moving to her belly. Erin's eyebrows shot up in concern. "Maria, are you alright?"
Maria forced a smile, trying to downplay it. "I'm fine, just… they're really active today."
Danny rubbed her back gently, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you sure you're okay? We can take a break from all this if you need to."
Maria squeezed his hand. "No, I'm fine. We're almost through. I just want this over with so Ana can finally be free of him."
After a quick meal, they began making their way back toward the courtroom when they heard shouts and a gunshot echoing through the hallway. Danny and Maria froze, adrenaline flooding their veins.
"Stay back!" Danny whispered to Maria and Erin as he started moving toward the noise. But Maria held his arm.
They turned the corner to see a U.S. Marshal down, unmoving, and Miguel Gutierrez holding Ana at gunpoint, his face twisted with rage. Carmen stood a few feet away, her face a mix of panic and pleading.
Carmen's voice shook as she held out her hand toward Miguel. "Miguel, please! She's my daughter! Let her go. This isn't going to solve anything."
Miguel sneered, his grip on Ana tightening. "Solve anything? You brought me into this mess, Carmen. This is all your fault, and now you want me to just let it go?"
Danny slowly moved toward the cluster of officers, his voice calm but authoritative. "Miguel, put the gun down. There's nowhere for you to go."
Miguel glanced at Danny, a glint of hatred in his eyes. "Detective Reagan. Always showing up where you're not wanted. Think you can just tell me what to do?"
Maria, who had been watching from a distance, felt a surge of courage. She messaged Danny quickly: "Trust me. Keep him talking."
Danny's phone buzzed, and he looked down briefly, heart pounding. He scanned the area, finally spotting Maria crouched behind a marble pillar, positioned directly adjacent to where Miguel held Ana. He immediately gestured subtly to the officers to hold their fire, then returned his focus to Miguel, keeping him talking.
"Miguel," Danny said calmly, taking a cautious step forward, "there's no way out here. You don't need to hurt Ana. Just put the gun down, and let's handle this a different way."
Miguel laughed, the sound twisted and full of bitterness. "Different way? Like how you handled my life, my family? You took everything from me. And now you're here telling me what's right?"
Danny shook his head, his voice steady and calm. "You did that yourself, Miguel. But you still have a choice. You can end this right now, peacefully."
Maria's heart hammered as she watched, clutching her phone tightly. She glanced at Danny, silently praying he could hold Miguel's attention just a little longer. Her message had gone through, and she could see Danny's eyes darting around, searching for her position to confirm she was in place. She took a slow breath, positioning herself behind the pillar and waiting for his signal.
"Choice?" Miguel's voice was full of anger, his face contorting as he glared at Danny. "My whole life, people have been making choices for me. People like you, like Carmen." He sneered, looking over his shoulder at Carmen, who stood frozen in fear. "And now I get to make the choice."
Danny's jaw clenched, his voice never losing its calm tone. "Then make the right one, Miguel. Put the gun down."
Miguel narrowed his eyes at him, then shifted his gaze toward Ana, who was trembling under his grip. "She's not innocent, you know. You don't know half the things she's done. None of you do. She's been a pawn, just like everyone else in this game."
Danny saw his opportunity and subtly nodded toward Maria, giving her the signal. Without hesitation, he raised his voice and said the code phrase: "Ana, sometimes you have to let things fall."
In that instant, Ana's eyes widened with understanding, and she let her body go limp, dropping hard to the ground. Carmen gasped, instinctively moving toward her fallen daughter.
Maria seized her chance. She stepped out from behind the pillar, gun in hand, her voice ringing out across the hallway. "Miguel! Freeze! Put the gun down, now!"
Miguel spun around, his eyes narrowing as he took in Maria's stance, her gun leveled at him. But instead of fear, he smirked, almost as if he were expecting this.
"Well, if it isn't Maria," he sneered, keeping his grip tight on his gun as he aimed it directly at Carmen, who was trying to shield Ana. "All the Baez women in one place. It's almost poetic."
"Miguel," Maria said, her voice firm despite the pounding in her chest, "you don't need to do this. Put the gun down. Now."
He laughed, a twisted gleam in his eye. "Or what? You'll shoot me? You're barely holding it together as it is, Maria. Do you really think you're in control here?"
Maria's voice wavered, just slightly, but her aim didn't falter. "I'm giving you one last chance, Miguel. Put it down, and no one else has to get hurt."
Miguel's eyes flickered between Maria and Carmen. With a snarl, he raised his gun toward Carmen, his hand trembling with anger. "You… you always ruin everything!"
Danny's voice rang out, sharp and forceful. "Miguel, don't do it!"
But before Miguel could pull the trigger, Maria fired. The shot echoed through the hall, and Miguel staggered back, clutching his arm where the bullet had struck. He dropped his gun, stumbling against the wall as blood seeped from his wound.
Danny was at Maria's side in seconds, reaching for her arm as her gun hand shook slightly. "Oh my God…please baby don't ever do that to me again. Maria, are you okay?"
She nodded, her face pale and breath unsteady as she lowered the gun. Relief washed over her, but it was quickly overshadowed by another feeling—a sudden, sharp pressure in her abdomen.
Ana scrambled over to Maria, her eyes wide with concern. "Maria, are you okay? Are you hurt? Oh my—" noticing her swollen belly.
Maria leaned against the wall, clutching her belly, her breathing becoming shallow as she winced. "I… I'm sorry, Danny. I had to do it but I'm okay. I just…" She looked up at Danny, her face a mixture of worry and surprise. "Danny, I… I think it's time. My water just broke."
Danny's eyes widened as he looked down, noticing the growing puddle at her feet. His face shifted from relief to pure, focused determination.
"Alright, Maria," he said, wrapping an arm around her. "Let's get you to the hospital, now."
Ana stepped back, looking both stunned and grateful as officers rushed forward to secure Miguel. Danny led Maria through the crowd, his arm strong around her as they hurried out of the courthouse and into the car, on their way to welcome the new lives they'd been waiting for.
Danny guided Maria carefully into the backseat of the car, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as she settled in, breathing through a wave of discomfort. He took her hand, brushing his thumb across her knuckles. "You're doing great, Maria. Just breathe."
She managed a small laugh between breaths, though her expression was still tight. "Danny, we just had a shootout in the middle of a courthouse," she said, looking out the window as they sped toward the hospital. "I think I'm allowed to feel a little… overwhelmed."
Danny chuckled, shaking his head. "Only you, Maria. Only you would go into labor right after taking down a guy like Miguel."
Maria squeezed his hand, a bead of sweat trickling down her forehead. "Just promise me one thing, Danny. Promise me that when these babies get here, they're getting a nice, quiet introduction to the world. No excitement, no drama."
"Absolutely," Danny nodded. "As long as it's up to us, they're getting nothing but peace and quiet."
As they reached the hospital, medical staff were already waiting at the entrance. Danny gently helped her out of the car, supporting her as she took a few shaky steps. The nurse gave him a quick smile and said, "Alright, Dad, you can follow us to the maternity ward."
Danny squeezed her hand and whispered, "I'll be right by your side the whole time."
Maria nodded, her expression softening. "Thank you, Danny. I wouldn't want anyone else here with me."
As they moved through the hospital hallways, Erin, Eddie, and Frank had arrived, having driven over as soon as they heard what happened at the courthouse. They hurried over, relief and concern etched across their faces.
"Maria!" Eddie called, rushing over and giving her a gentle hug before stepping back. "Are you okay? We came as soon as we could."
Maria managed a small smile. "I'm fine, Eddie, thank you. I think these little ones are just eager to make their entrance."
Erin squeezed Maria's shoulder, her gaze softening. "We're here for anything you need, Maria. Just focus on bringing those babies into the world."
Frank put a hand on Danny's shoulder, giving him a look of pride and reassurance. "I know you're going to be a great father, Danny. Just remember to breathe, too."
Danny nodded, his grip on Maria's hand tightening as they were ushered into the delivery room. The others waited outside, offering their support from just beyond the door. Inside the room, the medical team prepared Maria, talking her through each step.
Maria closed her eyes, focusing on her breathing, feeling Danny's presence beside her. He leaned close, his voice a calming presence in the midst of the flurry around them.
"You've got this, Maria," he whispered, brushing a hand over her hair. "Just a little bit longer, and we'll have our family right here."
Maria nodded, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. "Thank you, Danny… for everything."
They exchanged a quiet, understanding smile, both of them bracing for the journey ahead. In that room, surrounded by the hum of monitors and the soft encouragement of nurses, they were ready to meet the two new lives that would change theirs forever.
