Chapter 22: A Quiet Introduction
Danny held Maria's hand as she breathed through another wave of contractions, her grip tight but her expression calm and focused. They were in the final stretch, and he was at her side, offering encouragement every step of the way.
"You're almost there, babe," he whispered. "Just a little longer."
She managed a weak smile, exhausted but determined. "You're not allowed to go anywhere, Danny. I need you right here."
"Nowhere I'd rather be." He kissed her temple, grounding her in the chaotic storm of pain and excitement.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was Frank. He looked at Maria, who saw the name on the screen and gave a small nod. "Go on. The others are probably wondering how it's going."
He kissed her hand. "I'll be right back. I promise."
Danny stepped out into the waiting area to see his sons, Erin, Eddie, Jamie, Frank, and the rest of the Reagan clan waiting with bated breath. But his smile faltered when he noticed Carmen standing off to the side, flanked by two police officers, her face a mixture of anger and indignation. She crossed her arms, a look of defiance in her eyes.
Frank glanced at Danny and spoke in a low, measured tone. "Carmen was insistent on seeing Maria. Hospital security already told her she wasn't allowed near Maria, but she refused to leave." He paused, giving Danny a hard look. "How do you want this handled, son?"
Before Danny could answer, Carmen stepped forward. "I can't believe you would keep this from me, Danny. You think you can just hide Maria's pregnancy from her own mother? I deserve to be by my daughter's side while she's giving birth. That's what a real family does."
Danny's eyes narrowed, his voice cold and controlled. "Not that it's any of your business but Maria is not just my partner, she's my wife and a part of my family. You don't have the right to demand anything from Maria anymore, Carmen. You lost that right the moment you decided to support a man who hurt her and her sister."
Carmen's face reddened with indignation. "I've been there for Maria more than you have. You think just because you two are 'married' now that you know her better than I do?"
Danny shook his head, his gaze unwavering. "Carmen, where were you when Maria struggled with the death of her brother? Where were you when Javi, your son by the way, died in her arms, something no one should have to endure, huh? You know to this day I can't even imagine that kind of pain, and I've lost a brother too. I know what it does to a person, but where were the fuck where you?"
Carmen opened her mouth to respond, but Danny cut her off, his voice sharper. "And where were you when Maria nearly died from an accidental overdose? When she spent a week in the hospital fighting to survive? Or when she needed someone to stand by her side and believe in her instead of judging her? I don't ever recall Maria ever receiving a damn phone call, text, birthday or get well card from you and now you think you can waltz in here demanding to be by her side as if nothing ever happened. As if your coldness towards her didn't almost kill her—," Danny's voice breaks, he pauses to control his emotions and tears from falling.
Danny then took a step forward with his arms crossed, his voice firm. "You're not welcome in our lives, Carmen. Maria's made it very clear she wants nothing to do with you, and her reasons are more than justified."
Carmen's face crumpled as she glanced away, defiant yet wounded. "You have no right to speak to me like this."
Danny dropped his arms to his sides, his stance unrelenting. "When it comes to protecting and standing up for my wife, my family against people like you, I have EVERY RIGHT!"
The waiting room went silent, the tension palpable. Jaime and Frank stepped forward, each placing a hand on Danny's shoulder in an attempt to ground him.
Danny took a few deep breaths, steadying himself before speaking again, his voice low but firm, "You either leave on your own, or I'll have you removed. This is Maria's day. She deserves peace and joy when our baby arrives, and I won't let anyone—especially you—ruin that."
As he spoke, Ana arrived, her face drawn but determined. She stepped between Danny and Carmen, looking her mother in the eye. "Mama, you need to leave. Maria doesn't need or want you here right now."
Carmen looked back at her, desperation flickering in her eyes. "Ana, I'm your mother—"
Ana held up her hand, cutting her off. "And I'm your daughter. I know what you think of me, but this isn't about us. This is about Maria, and right now she needs peace. Let her have that."
Carmen's face fell, and for a brief moment, she looked truly broken. But Ana stood firm, handing Danny a small, neatly wrapped package and an envelope. "Will you give this to her for me? It's a letter, and… well, she'll know what to do with it." Her voice softened. "I'll be under witness protection until Miguel's sentencing. Just tell her… tell her I love her."
Danny nodded, a hint of gratitude in his eyes. "I will, Ana. Thank you."
Ana said her goodbyes, sparing one last look at her mother before she walked past her without a word. Carmen called out to her, but Ana kept walking, her face set with resolve.
As Ana disappeared down the hall, Erin placed a gentle hand on Danny's shoulder. "Go back to Maria. She needs you right now."
Frank nodded, his expression serious but encouraging. "This is a big day, son. Don't let anyone rob you or Maria of this moment. We're here for you."
Danny drew a steadying breath, feeling a calm wash over him as he looked back toward the delivery room. "Thanks, Dad. And all of you, for everything."
As he turned to head back, Jamie called out, "Don't keep her waiting, Danny. You've got two little ones who can't wait to meet their dad."
With one last nod to his family, Danny returned to Maria, finding her breathing through another contraction. She looked up as he entered, giving him a look that said, what took you so long?
He smiled, coming to her side and taking her hand. "Just fulfilling my promise to make sure our babies get a quiet welcome."
Her smile softened as she squeezed his hand, relief in her eyes. "Thank you, Danny."
A few hours later, Maria's labor progressed, and it was finally time. The nurses and doctors gathered around, giving instructions as Danny held her hand, gently wiping her brow and whispering words of encouragement.
"You've got this, Maria. I'm right here. Just one step at a time."
She looked at him, a flicker of fear in her eyes. "Danny, I don't know if I'm ready. What if—"
"You are ready," he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You've been ready from the moment we found out about them. I believe in you. We're doing this together."
She nodded, his words grounding her as she focused on the task ahead. As the doctor guided her, Maria took a deep breath and began to push, gripping Danny's hand tightly. His words were a steady presence as she worked through the pain, giving her strength.
Finally, a cry filled the room.
"Look at that, a beautiful baby girl!" The doctor exclaims. Their first daughter entered the world, her tiny voice clear and strong. The doctor placed the baby in Maria's arms, and Danny felt his breath hitch as he gazed down at their little girl, wrapped in a soft pink blanket.
Maria looked up at Danny, tears streaming down her face. "Danny, look at her. She's perfect."
Danny kissed her forehead, his voice thick with emotion. "You did amazing, Maria. She's beautiful—just like you."
"What should we name her?" Danny asks, tears in his eyes.
"How does Elena Marie sound? It's one of the names you suggested," Maria smiles.
"I love it. I love her and I love you," Danny says, wiping tears from his eyes and giving Maria a sweet kiss.
Moments later, Maria gathered her strength once more. As Maria pushed through the final moments of labor, Danny stayed by her side, whispering words of encouragement. She squeezed his hand with all her strength, her face twisted in determination and exhaustion. And then, another sharp, tiny cry filled the room.
The doctor smiled, glancing over at the two of them. "Congratulations," she said happily, "it's another girl!"
Their second daughter was born, her cry joining her sister's as she was placed into Maria's waiting arms. He stared down at his newborn daughter, his heart full of love and gratitude. Danny's face lit up with joy, his eyes darting from the doctor back to Maria. "Another girl," he whispered, almost as if he couldn't believe it.
Maria's face softened, her exhausted eyes filling with happy tears. "Danny, we have two daughters."
He grinned, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. "I'd say we're outnumbered, but I couldn't be happier."
"Hi there, little one, I love you" he murmured softly. He looked up at Maria, his eyes brimming with emotion. "She's beautiful, just like her mom."
Maria reached over, her hand trembling as she caressed their daughter's cheek. "We're so lucky," she whispered. "I don't even know how it's possible to love them this much already."
Danny then knelt beside her bed, his face close to both of his girls. "What should we name her?"
Maria looked down, a warm smile spreading across her face as she gazed at the tiny baby in her arms. "Sophia," she said, glancing up at Danny. "Sophia Rose."
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl," Danny smiles.
Nurses then took both babies from Maria to get them cleaned up, Danny watching as they did so carefully. He then walks back over to Maria and checks up on her, updating her on how both Elena and Sophia were doing as they were getting cleaned up.
Soon a nurse brings their first daughter over to Maria, wrapped in a pink blanket, and stops her crying as soon as she's placed in Maria's waiting arms. Another nurse brought their second daughter over, also wrapped snugly in a pink blanket, and gently placed her in Danny's waiting arms. He gazed down at the tiny, perfect face looking up at him, his heart swelling with awe.
He leaned in, his voice low and tender. "Thank you, Maria… for our family. For everything." He brushed a tear from her cheek, his eyes filled with love.
Tears slipped down Maria's cheeks as she looked at Danny, her voice a soft whisper. "This is everything I ever wanted. Our family."
Danny held her close, both of them lost in the wonder of the two tiny lives they had created together, knowing that, from this moment on, everything in their world had changed for the better.

As the nurses finished up, Danny went to the door and invited the family in. "Come on in, meet our baby girls," he smiled, walks back to where Maria is at and takes her hands. Both babies are in their bassinets.
"Family, meet Elena Marie Reagan and Sophia Rose Reagan," Maria says happily, although heavy with emotion.
"Two girls?" Sean asked, surprised.
"Yup, you've got two little sisters now," Maria says softly, smiling up at Danny and then to the boys.
"That's awesome," Jack says, smiling over to the twins.
"So awesome," Sean says, placing a hand over Jacks shoulder.
Erin and Jamie were the first to approach the bassinets, each taking one of the babies into their arms with awe.
Erin smiled, tears in her eyes as she gazed down at Sophia. "They're so beautiful, Maria. You and Danny did good."
Jamie chuckled softly, holding Elena carefully. "You've got two miracles here. They're going to bring so much joy."
One by one, the Reagans gathered around, each of them in awe of the tiny new additions to the family. Finally, Frank stepped forward, his eyes shining with pride as he looked at Danny, Maria, and the twins.
"Welcome to the family, Elena and Sophia Reagan," he said softly, his voice filled with warmth. "You are so loved already."
Maria leaned against Danny, exhausted but radiant, and whispered, "Thank you for being here—for all of us."
Danny wrapped an arm around her, pressing a kiss to her hair. "This is just the beginning, Maria. Our family, our life together. And we're just getting started."
